Do you dread going to the doctor's office and standing on the scale? Is it legal to decline to be weighed at the doctor's office? Is there a link between our weight and our health? Dr. Maggie Landes joins us today to discuss her journey as a doctor in discovering the truth about the connection between weight and health.Maggie was a doctor who thought that our weight had an impact on our health. Title: Weight Stigma in the Medical Field In today's episode, I'm joined on the show by anti-diet wellness expert and creator of her signature getEATfluenced® coaching program, Maggie Landes. Listen in as we have a conversation about weight stigma in the medical field, where it comes from, what we can do to fight that, and what she is doing to combat this stigma in her own way. Maggie is also a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and the creator and host of “The Eatfluencer Podcast,” where she and her guests dig into the mindset work required to construct a healthy, complete, and high-quality life unlimited by the oppression of diet culture. In her getEATfluenced® coaching program, Maggie helps women who are exasperated with chronic dieting be able to fix their food overwhelm and live a full and unrestricted life pursuing their version of health without the distraction of rigid eating behavior. Listen in to learn more: Weight Stima and the impact of it in the medical field[11:11] The bottom line is that there are healthy people in large bodies and those in large bodies who are unhealthy; there are people in small bodies who are healthy and those in small bodies who are unhealthy, so let's just take the “bodies” out of it. [18:49] This will never end until somebody says that we have to break this cycle and make health care about health, not weight. [24:06] Any positive activity is still positive. There is not some bar of magnitude that if it is not “this,” then it doesn't count. It all counts. [29:47] Make sure you get all the possible treatment options for your condition in the first encounter with your doctor. You shouldn't have to lose weight to access the rest of your health care. [37:10] Plus much more, including what can people in thin bodies with thin privilege do to help this movement to separate health and weight? As non-diet professionals and coaches, it is not uncommon for us to hear from our clients that they are afraid of having their weight brought up with their medical provider, especially from our clients living in larger bodies who are most directly affected by medical weight stigma. When we have the right tools as professionals, we can coach our clients to create equality with their medical provider, establish consent (or non-consent), decline being weighed unless absolutely necessary, and empower them to be the leader of the conversation with their medical provider. Dr. Maggie Landes is on the podcast today. She is a board certified physician, a public health nutritionist, and an anti diet wellness expert. Now I'm guessing most of you don't want to sit down and read scientific studies, do statistical analysis in your free time. I know I spent years doing that with my degree, and I have spent a lot of time in the last year reading study after study to be able to become a certified, intuitive eating counselor. But I know you don't probably want to do. Thankfully Maggie has done all the work for us. Now don't get worried, we're not going to be on here talking about scientific studies. We're not going to be analyzing data, nothing like that, thankfully, but what you will hear about that, might blow your mind in this interview. You're also going to learn what led Maggie to practice in this anti diet space as a board certified doctor. And what she discovered when she spent the time digging into the research and statistics on weight loss. I want you to listen in for her fundamental belief around the human body, you're going to love it. Then she is going to be dropping one truth bomb after another. Have you ever thought, why do I keep on dieting? Why do I go back even though I know it doesn't work? Maggie's got something for you. We met through our membership in the Unstuck Entrepreneur Coaching Community with Shawn Mynar. Bio for our guest, Dr. Maggie Landes: Maggie Landes is a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and anti-diet wellness expert. She created her signature getEATfluenced® coaching program to help women who are exasperated with chronic dieting, be able to fix their food overwhelm and live a full and unrestricted life pursuing their personal passions and attain optimal health without the distraction of rigid eating behavior. She is also the creator and host of “The Eatfluencer Podcast” where she and her guests dig into the mindset work required to construct a healthy, complete, and high-quality life unlimited by the oppression of diet culture. Maggie has been a physician for over 20 years and also earned her Master's Degree in Public Health Nutrition. She currently works in the anti-diet wellness space as a diet culture disruptor, speaker, and educator. Maggie provides group coaching to help women disconnect from the pressure to “micromanage” body weight and navigate health outside of the lens of diet culture and weight loss. “Diet culture” - systematic beliefs in our country:Weight and health are the same thing. Smaller is better; everyone should be pursuing smallness. Adult women have a responsibility to shrink themselves physically and/or maintain that “shrunken” version. Medical industry is influenced by and arranged around diet culture. “Forced Pause” - Maggie was diagnosed with cancer and spent time during her treatment and recovery to learn more about health and wellness with a focus on nutrition. She learned that although science evolves, “Nutrition” guidelines have not. People recognize that diets don't work. Maggie helps women find the alternative to think about food and approach food - shop and cook and relate to your body without dieting. She helps women replace the diet structure with new thinking patterns and behaviors to live confidently and well. Social media: “@MaggieLandesMD” (links below) “Trash the Scale. Use the List”With her clients, Maggie explores - Why do you want to lose weight? And clients identify the following goals with the belief that weight loss is the only way to get there:“I will be more confident” “I will feel sexier” “I will have more energy” “I will sleep better” “I can participate in fun activities” “I want to decrease joint pain” Maggie encourages women to pursue those goals on the list and “leave the scale out of it.” Maggie's website https://www.maggielandesmd.com Social media https://www.clubhouse.com/@maggielandesmd https://www.facebook.com/maggielandesmd https://www.instagram.com/maggielandesmd/ https://twitter.com/maggielandesmd https://www.pinterest.com/maggielandesmd/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/maggie-landes-md-mph-3445a67/ Podcast Feed for “The Eatfluencer Podcast” with Maggie Landes MD https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-eatfluencer-podcast/id1537284754?itsct=podcast_box&itscg=30200 Free Resources from Maggie: The Diet Disruptors & Maggie Landes MD Facebook group (for women only) https://www.maggielandesmd.com/the-diet-disruptors Quiz: What's your deep-down diet personality type? https://www.tryinteract.com/share/quiz/5fc2fcc2e82c64001639d707 Quiz: How ready are you to ditch your dieting for good? https://www.tryinteract.com/share/quiz/5fe260773d0e350016bfc103 5 Secrets of Stress-Free Social Eating https://www.maggielandesmd.com/stress-free-eating The Three-Week Dinner Solution https://www.maggielandesmd.com/opt-in-page-for-three-week-dinner Events and Services! Excerpt: In my work as a personal trainer and nutritionist, the main goal I hear from my clients is to lose weight. When questioned about their desire to lose weight, the most common answer is “to be healthy”.We all want to be the healthiest we possibly can be, we understand that weight loss is the answer. Having a high BMI has been linked with diseases such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, cancer and more. However, it is a myth that having a high BMI causes these things. In this episode, I am joined by Maggie Landes, MD who explains how BMI itself, is not the best indicator of health. In fact, dieting actually increase our risk and leads to worse health outcomes than weight alone.Maggie explains her “un-dieted” approach to eating and how chasing health at EVERY size is possible. She also discusses body image and weight stigma with practical strategies to help you self-advocate. What you'll learn by listening:Why BMI is not the best indicator of your health, and what actually isHow dieting, or attempts to control your weight, actually leads to negative health outcomes and how giving up dieting can be the healthiest choice you makeWhat the “Un-dieted” approach to eating means and the steps you can take to have a more peaceful relationship to foodStrategies to use if you have been stigmatized due to weightThe difference between “correlation” and “causationAbout our Guest:Maggie Landes is a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and anti-diet wellness expert. Learn from this doctor turned anti-diet wellness expert! There's a social system that's been created that's pressured us to want to get smaller. It's defined us and has played into the guilt and doubt we feel as women about our bodies. "I should be this, I should be that". Toss out the narrative of societal expectations and shame and give yourself permission to just BE. When we let that go we can actually free up the mental space to allow our bodies to do what they were meant to do: function properly.About Maggie:Maggie Landes is a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and anti-diet wellness expert. She created her signature getEATfluenced® coaching program to help women who are exasperated with chronic dieting, be able to fix their food overwhelm and live a full and unrestricted life pursuing their personal passions without the distraction of rigid eating behavior. She is also the creator and host of “The Eatfluencer Podcast” where she and her guests dig into the mindset work required to construct a healthy, complete, and high-quality life unlimited by the oppression of diet culture.Maggie's overt passion to teach about eating, and its relationship to complete health came not from her extensive didactic training, but from the blank space at the intersection of those things. After decades of subscribing to diet culture, both personally and professionally, a personal battle with cancer at the age of 40 caused her to reframe her perspective, and she now practices and teaches others that the wisdom of the human body and the power of positive thinking are the gateway to healing our relationship with food.Maggie believes that every woman is influential and worthy, and by empowering ourselves to have confidence and control of our thinking and leaving behind our obsession with dieting, we can show that value to the world. All of her personal coaching and programs support the Health at Every Size philosophy, the framework of Intuitive Eating, and a weight-inclusive, body neutral approach to health and wellness.Connect with Maggie:Website: https://www.maggielandesmd.comSocial media:https://www.facebook.com/maggielandesmdhttps://www.instagram.com/maggielandesmd/https://twitter.com/maggielandesmdhttps://www.pinterest.com/maggielandesmd/Also newly on Clubhouse moderating “The Anti Diet Collaborative”Make sure to follow @maggielandesmd on Clubhouse for notifications when Maggie speaks!Podcast Feed for “The Eatfluencer Podcast” with Maggie Landes MD:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-eatfluencer-podcast/id1537284754?itsct=podcast_box&itscg=30200About me:Karen Laos s a keynote speaker and leadership coach equipping women to stand out with unshakable confidence.
