This episode is a deep dive into all things hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA), starting with what it is and why it occurs. Cynthia shares her own personal struggle with missing periods and infertility, and the trouble she had getting an HA diagnosis. We talk about the impact of exercise and stress on the menstrual cycle, reminding listeners that they do not need to identify as an athlete to have exercise affect their hormones. What is the difference between good, challenging training and over-exercise?  After all, running for hours and hours training for long distance events is definitely far more exercise that we need to be healthy and fit. But when is it really considered over-exercise?  It can happen pretty quickly when we undereat. Undereating paired with high amounts of training will start to set off alarm bells in the body.  One of the first things that the body will sacrifice in women is reproductive health.  In this state, your body has decided that there's not enough food for you as well as another life, so it prepares for survival instead of fertility. Once you've lost your period, consider yourself warned that you've crossed a very dangerous line for your health.  And what you might not know is that this doesn't just happen to skinny people.  You can be at risk no matter what your size, even if you have weight to lose. And how her dieting and workout routines went up a notch in the preparation of her wedding in her mid-twenties.She explores how her training as a registered dietitian gave her very little knowledge about disordered eating or hormonal issues related to living in an energy deficit, and may have even been triggering a troubled relationship with food, exercise and her body.Together, we discussed the constant confusion between HA and PCOS diagnoses (learn more at http://noperiod.info/HAvsPCOS), and how getting the right diagnosis finally helped Cynthia go #allin. We also share strategies to be a better advocate of your own health with your healthcare practitioner, by using the No Period Now What book as a reference.Cynthia reminds us all of the importance of community in recovery, as well as increasing patience and perseverance, letting go of control, and reevaluating what your dream life really looks like (hint: it is usually the opposite of what you have to do to maintain a "dream body" as per society's unrealistic standards). You can find Cynthia's work and support via @period.nutritionist on Instagram. To find support in your HA recovery:Get the "No Period. Cynthia Donovan has been a dietitian for 10 years. Half of that she spent as clinical RD and community RD. For the past five years she has practiced as a non-diet, health-at-every-size dietitian. Cynthia is a mom of two little boys, one and a half years old and three and a half years old, and has married her high school sweetheart. She came to find her true passion for her profession through her own battle with disordered eating and disordered exercise, plus losing her cycle, and then encountering fertility issues. Now she helps women worldwide find balance with food and exercise so they can get their period back and live the life they were meant to live. “The PCOS diagnosis drove me deeper into watching really what I ate, and thus my eating became even a bit more disordered. I was also getting ready for my wedding. So on top of that. Also, exercise, I use the stress relief. So all these factors actually played into my period missing. So after some time I'm like, "This is what I need to do. I need to help other women just like myself." Then after finding my why it just became so clear and so simple and easy to have a targeted population to reach. So I knew I was finally meant to do this type of work, and that is to help women find balance with food and exercise and get their periods back so they were able to finally live the life they were meant to live just like I have.” - Cynthia Donovan In this episode: How Cynthia took her own struggle with PCOS and used it to discover her ideal client How she's adapted her marketing strategy Instagram: @period.nutritionist
