This episode looks at On the Waterfront, the celebrated 1954 American film directed by Elia Kazan and written by Budd Schulberg. The film stars Marlon Brando as the ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman Terry Malloy. Malloy struggles to stand up to mob-affiliated union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) after Malloy is lured into setting up a fellow dockworker whom Friendly has murdered to prevent him from testifying before the Waterfront Crime Commission about violence and corruption at the docks. The pressure on Malloy rises as he falls in love with Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), the murdered dockworker's sister, and as Edie, along with local priest Father Pete Barry (Karl Malden), urge Malloy to do the right thing. Malloy ultimately testifies against Friendly and challenges Friendly's leadership at great personal risk. While the film is about a courageous fight against a corrupt power structure and injustice, it is also influenced by director Elia Kazan's own controversial decision to act as an informant against fellow directors, writers, and actors during the McCarthy-era Red Scare.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction2:20 Corruption on the docks9:18 Boxing: I could have been a contender17:07 The priest on the waterfront23:44 Testifying before waterfront crime commission32:10 Informants34:48 Elia Kazan and the House Un-American Activities Committee47:04 The film's relevance today48:39 Some people who stood up to HUAC50:40 Separating the art and the artistFurther reading:Demeri, Michelle J., “The ‘Watchdog' Agency: Fighting Organized Crime on the Waterfront in New York and New Jersey,” 38 New Eng. At-home charging is the most common charging method among current EV drivers in the United States. It is convenient and reliable and less expensive than buying gasoline. However, people who live in apartments or condos often do not have access to a home charger, making EV ownership significantly more challenging. In order to achieve an equitable transition to EVs, these residents need convenient, reliable, and affordable charging options. In this episode, Malcolm Johnson from UC Berkeley and Ellen Kennedy from RMI discuss recent research their organizations published on EV charging at multifamily housing, including barriers, equitable solutions, and examples.

(Episode 2022.13: Featuring Malcolm Johnson, CEO, Langdon Park Capital) https://www.afire.org/podcast/malcolmjohnson/ Malcolm Johnson, CEO of Langdon Park Capital, believes true affordability is possible (even with the considerable obstacles present in the current business environment)—and that affordable strategies may be investors' strongest emerging opportunity for core markets in the US. The demand for affordable housing is climbing every day while the supply is not keeping pace. Reasons for the dearth of affordable housing range from municipal zoning and regulatory policies to NIMBYism and fractured supply chains—but despite these factors, Johnson makes the case for how it is still possible to invest in and create solid affordable housing and deliver consistent returns. In this episode of the AFIRE Podcast, recorded on July 19, 2022, former professional football player-turned-real estate leader Malcolm Johnson sat down with AFIRE CEO and podcast host Gunnar Branson to talk about the new future of affordable housing and investment in the US.

The idea that we shouldn't speak ill of the dead has an ancient heritage dating as far back as 600BC. It's attributed to the Greek philosopher Chilon of Sparta, but judging by recent headlines around allegations of historic sex abuse it might not have much more of a shelf life. Police forces keen to redress claims that in the past they haven't treated victims fairly and to demonstrate they're not part of a an establishment cover up, are devoting huge resources to cases often dating back many decades and even when the alleged perpetrator is dead. Combine that with a press hungry for salacious gossip knowing that the dead can't sue for libel and it's open season on people who are not only unable to defend themselves, but who will never be brought to trial. The most famous example is the former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, but there are numerous others. Should the dead have the same rights as the living? Should they be presumed innocent until proven guilty? Is this just vindictive muck raking or do we owe the many victims of child abuse a duty to try to expose the truth, even after so many years have passed? If we aren't willing to expose what really happened 50 years ago, then what are the chances that we will ever face up to the truth of what happens today? There are those who argue that for too long the victim's voice has been ignored in our legal system and that these investigations help them get closure. But is that the same as justice? Should we hear these cases in court, or would they be better suited to some kind of truth and justice commission? In an increasingly victim-focused climate is our pursuit of historic crimes distorting the meaning of justice? Chaired by Michael Buerk with Giles Fraser, Claire Fox, Anne McElvoy and Mathew Taylor. Witnesses are Barbara Hewson, Peter Hitchens, Mark Watts and Malcolm Johnson.

I long ago came to the realization that there is no form of music that I don't like. There are artists (Rhianna) and songs (Brown-Eyed Girl) that, I quite frankly can't stand and would love to rid the world of. There are genres of music (Turkish chant, Yiddish folk, American Country) that I just don't "get" because they really don't speak to me and probably weren't meant to. It's not that I hate this music, it may annoy me at times, particularly when I'm in the mood for something else, but otherwise I have no real strong feelings about it whatsoever ... as a genre of music. I think my goal for the next few years is going to be to learn to love those few remaining genres of music. I've found all it takes is a little education. For example, being a middle-aged, middle-American, suburban dweller, until recently I had never been a really big fan of reggae. I was thoroughly convinced that there were only one recycled reggae song called "I Shot the Buffalo Soldier and Stood Up for My Rights." Surprisingly, it only took one hour listening to a Reggae show on a community radio station out of North Yorkshire, UK where a very knowledgeable and passionate disc jockey (Clearchannel take note) opened my eyes to the fact that reggae as a genre is as widespread and diverse as rock and roll, and some of it was absolutely killer. This led to a three week immersion through every list of reggae songs and artists I could find, discovering the likes of The Skatalites, Ijahman Levi, Buju Banton, U-Roy, Mutabaruka and a slew of others. If you have never immersed yourself in an unfamiliar musical genre with the help of a an expert guide in this manner, I highly recommed it. This week's guests, Indyca, are one of our few local "reggae-ish" groups. As with many great Indiana artists, their particular flavor of the genre is a musical crossroads, combining the loose backbeat of reggae and infuse it with elements of jam band, rock, dubstep, and even heavy metal at times. This diverse musical background, while seeming somewhat incongruous at first is brought together by a group of musicians who are equally versed in the technical side of their craft, but still have an excellent ear and open mind for what what works, what doesn't work, and how to push the edges of experimentation just a little in order to create something new and distinctly their own. Definitely looking forward to hearing how this translates in a studio environment. Indyca can be found here: | | All of this evening's tracks were recorded live at by Malcolm Johnson and can be obtained on their . Bassist Bryan Dougherty also plays in ... which is completely different. For people who aspire to be know-it-alls when it comes to music, I found this article which goes in to depth on "." It also turned me on to a lot of artists I didn't know. Indyca is proudly sponsored by and ... and loosely associated with ... not that we in any way condone mixing those three things. For those not overly knowledgeable about "the culture" ... I found this article which discuses "." Who says my show isn't educational?
