The Cyber Safety Review Board's (CSRB) report on the Summer 2023 Microsoft Exchange online intrusion sheds light on how a series of flaws in Microsoft's cloud infrastructure and security processes allowed a hacking group associated with the People's Republic of China (PRC) to strike the “equivalent of gold” in accessing the official email accounts of many of the most senior U.S. government officials managing the U.S. government's relationship with the PRC. Lawfare Senior Editor Stephanie Pell sat down Maia Hamin, Associate Director with the Atlantic Council's Cyber Statecraft Initiative; Trey Herr, Assistant Professor of cybersecurity and policy at American University's School of International Service and Director of the Cyber Statecraft Initiative at the Atlantic Council; and Marc Rogers, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer for the AI observability startup nbhd.ai, to discuss their recent Lawfare piece about the CSRB's report and the lagging state of cloud security policy. They talked about ways to improve cloud service provider transparency, other investigative and regulatory tools that could facilitate better cloud security, and their thoughts on Microsoft's response to the CSRB's report. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 29, 2021 is: inroad • IN-rohd • noun 1 : an advance or penetration often at the expense of someone or something — usually used in plural 2 : a sudden hostile incursion : raid Examples: "'These are no longer cars,' said Marc Rogers, the principal security researcher at the cybersecurity firm CloudFlare. 'These are data centers on wheels. Any part of the car that talks to the outside world is a potential inroad for attackers.'" — Nicole Perlroth, The New York Times, 7 June 2017 "Swatch Group on Thursday reported its first annual loss since the early days of the Swiss watchmaker almost 40 years ago as the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered shops and smartwatches made inroads into the market." — John Revill, Reuters, 28 Jan. 2021 Did you know? Inroad is a combination of in and road, both of which are pretty mundane, as far as words go. But the first-and-oldest-meaning of inroad hints at a meaning of road other than the "way for traveling" one. Beginning back in the days of Old English, road referred to an armed hostile incursion made on horseback. (Raid comes from this use of road and also formerly specified incursions on horseback.) Road, as well as inroad, has lost its violent connotation. While inroads are often made at the expense of someone or something, they are at times simply advances, as when an artist is said to be "making inroads into a community."

This is a wholly sponsored podcast brought to you by Okta. In this interview we chat with Marc Rogers, the executive director of Cybersecurity at Okta. The question that we’re exploring in this interview is whether or not we’ve managed to move the infosec needle since the Chinese government hacked Google back during the Operation Aurora attacks of 2009. There are some real echoes of Operation Aurora in today’s headlines, like the SVR’s Solarwinds hack and Chinese APT crews using Exchange 0day. Google did learn from Aurora and rearchitected its whole approach to minimise the chances of that sort of things happening again. They moved to their implementation of Zero Trust, Beyondcorp, and so far that looks like a good decision. The rest of the world has been slow to follow, and that leads us to the question: have we actually made things better since Operation Aurora hit the headlines back in 2009?

A global anonymous bug submission platform, announced at DEF CON in Las Vegas in August, aims to help encourage ethical hackers to submit high-level bugs anonymously that might otherwise trigger a barrage of questions or might put researchers in legal hot water. At DEF CON, conference founder Jeff Moss said the goal was to launch the yet-to-be-named program within the next 12 months.  The program will be built on open-source technology from the Freedom of the Press Foundation's SecureDrop server and is designed to be a cyber tipline of sorts. Marc Rogers, VP of cybersecurity strategy for Okta and Head of Security Operations for DEF CON, breaks down the anonymous bug submission program in this week's Threatpost Podcast.

How to Hack a Tesla Model S Marc Rogers Principle Security Researcher for CloudFlare Kevin Mahaffey CTO of Lookout Inc The Tesla Model S is the most connected car in the world. It might surprise you to hear that it is also one of the most secure. In this talk we will walk you through the architecture of a Tesla Model S noting things that Tesla got right as well as identifying those that they got wrong. From this talk you will get an intimate understanding of how the many interconnected systems in a Tesla model S work and most importantly how they can be hacked. You will also get a good understanding of the data that this connected car collects and what Tesla does with this telemetry. We will also be releasing a tool that will enable Tesla Model S owners to view and analyse that telemetry in real time. Finally we will also be releasing several 0day vulnerabilities that will allow you to hack a Tesla Model S yourself - both locally and remotely. Note - only one of the 6 vulnerabilities we will discuss and release has been fixed. Disclaimer: With great access comes great responsibility - In other words we are not responsible for any Tesla Model S bricked by over enthusiastic attendees of this talk :) Marc Rogers aka Cyberjunky has been a prominent member of the hacking scene since the 80’s. Masquerade: How a Helpful Man-in-the-Middle Can Help You Evade Monitoring. Ryan Lackey Founder, CryptoSeal, Inc. Marc Rogers Principal Security Researcher, Lookout The Grugq Information Security Researcher Sometimes, hiding the existence of a communication is as important as hiding the contents of that communication. While simple network tunneling such as Tor or a VPN can keep the contents of communications confidential, under active network monitoring or a restrictive IDS such tunnels are red flags which can subject the user to extreme scrutiny.Format-Transforming Encryption (FTE) can be used to tunnel traffic within otherwise innocuous protocols, keeping both the contents and existence of the sensitive traffic hidden. However, more advanced automated intrusion detection, or moderately sophisticated manual inspection, raise other red flags when a host reporting to be a laser printer starts browsing the web or opening IM sessions, or when a machine which appears to be a Mac laptop sends network traffic using Windows-specific network settings. We present Masquerade: a system which combines FTE and host OS profile selection to allow the user to emulate a user-selected operating system and application-set in network traffic and settings, evading both automated detection and frustrating after-the-fact analysis. Ryan Lackey, Founder of CryptoSeal, founded HavenCo, the world’s first offshore datahaven, and has worked as a defense contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan, at various technology startups, and is currently working on a secure hardware-based router for business travelers. Marc Rogers is an English hacker, Director of SecOps for DEF CON, and works as Principal Security Researcher for Lookout. The Grugq is a pioneering information security researcher with over a decade of professional experience. He has worked extensively with digital forensic analysis, binary reverse engineering, rootkits, Voice over IP, telecommunications and financial security. The Grugq's professional career has included Fortune 100 companies, leading information security firms and innovative start-ups. Claims to fame: - pioneered anti-forensics - developed "userland exec" - released voip attack software - decade of experience in infosec - long term liaison w/ digital underground - described as "extremely handsome" [by his mom] - 1992 sussex County 3-legged race, 2nd place The Grugq has spoken at dozens of conferences over the last 7 years; provided expert training courses to .gov, .mil, police and businesses; domain expertise on forensics, voip, telecommunications and financial systems.
