Michael Zähl, former engineer and designer of the main custom made mixing console at the legendary Studio of Conny Plank and Mark Ernestus, long time producer known from projects like Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound had a special encounter which led to the collaborative development of AM1 - the state-of-the-art pure analog mixing console. I speak to these two excellent individuals about how they came to meet and the 9 years journey to make a mixing desk the likes of which we've never seen before. _____ Kind sponsorship of this pod comes from a lesser known company called Ableton! Live 12.1 is out and it's a beauty of an update. I put autoshift through its paces in a mini nitty to kick off the show Check out live at https://www.ableton.com

Fuinneamh's Lucas Ogma has shared the first two singles from his debut album ‘Native Wildflower' on our Soundcloud, along with an exclusive interview about the project. His debut album is a homage to the natural world and its inherent impact on music, focusing on deep, lush, and textured sounds throughout 14 tracks. Luke Reddy, also known as Lucas Ogma, is one of the most influential figures in the Irish dance music industry right now. The Fuinneamh founder has dedicated his life to creating safe and unique dance spaces, and his passion for authenticity and freedom of expression pervades all aspects of his work. Lucas' music, like his festivals and parties, exudes a profound sense of tranquillity. A sense of security and connection to both our forebears and the natural world. The Sligo-based artist's unique approach to music-making blurs the lines between traditional Irish percussive rhythms and those of the electronic continuum, resulting in a distinct Gaelic take on the quintessential techno sound. His latest musical undertaking is his most bold and honest yet. The 14-track album provides a glimpse inside the mind of one of Ireland's most adventurous creatives. Lucas delves further into the world of layered hypnotic techno, with each track exuding a genuine feeling of sorrow and romanticism. The project is categorised as techno. Pure techno. However, describing this as club music seems somewhat reductive. The album is slightly unconventional in terms of techno, with an acute sense of story-telling and cinematic bravado coursing through its epicentre. The relationship between the painter and the painting runs deep in this project. The prospect of releasing music that has been largely sequestered for so long seems heartbreaking. This is important to him. It's more than surface-level bangers; it's a record of life thus far. From the smoky basement growls of ‘Introspect' and ‘Surveillance' to the flickering beams of fantasy-style bliss on ‘Left Behind', the album shifts from light to dark in a delicately poignant manner, gently bringing listeners from Panorama to Berghain at the flick of a switch. Lucas' distinctive approach to the dub sound pays homage to pioneers Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. Lucas takes a purist and organic approach to techno, drawing on a luxurious bed of pulsating atmospheres to lay the groundwork for fluttering delay swells on luscious chord stabs that echo through the soundscape like a gust of wind blowing through the towering oak trees on the Fuinneamh grounds. Despite the evident inspirations, there is a strong sense of solitude in this offering. Lucas was isolated in his home of Sligo while writing the album, shielded from the world of warehouses and murky dance floors. He curated a sound that mirrored his journey. This is the quintessential Fuinneamh sound: a groove that honours our roots and history Lucas ------------------------- SC: @lucasogma IG: www.instagram.com/lukereddy1/ FB: www.facebook.com/lucasogma Four Four Magazine

"Always notice whatever is happening in the background." The acclaimed producer and composer discusses the art of meaningful listening and his latest LP, Silencio. Moritz von Oswald's legacy as one of the trailblazers of contemporary techno precedes him. The artist's initial claim to fame was his involvement in the duo Basic Channel with Mark Ernestus, a project that formed the dub techno canon in the '90s and is still a primary reference point for many, if not most, modern producers. He was also at the helm of the famous cutting and pressing plant Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, which has become a home for countless artists over the years. But on this occasion, Oswald sat down to discuss a more recent project: his LP Silencio on Tresor Records, which came out in November. He talked with RA's senior producer, Chloe Lula, about his lifelong love of jazz, tapestry, French film, Southern Italian opera and music from Central Asia. He also reflects on his production process—an endless exploration of drama and dynamics. Oswald is fascinated with reducing sound to its most basic elements and broadening the capacity of what the ear can perceive. Most importantly, he's a critical listener, and in the final moments of the episode, he imparts wisdom on how he's learned to keep a conscious ear open to the world around him. Check out the episode in full.

Lloyd ‘Bullwackie' Barnes and his legendary Wackie's institution has been at the heart of the dub and reggae scene since the 1970s. Starting out as a tailor to reggae's brightest stars, Bullwackie quickly started working as an engineer at Treasure Isle and Studio One studios in Kingston, Jamaica. On moving to New York with his family he became immersed in the burgeoning reggae and dub scene briefly running his own soundsystem. Bullwackie opened up the first reggae studio in New York, Wackie's House of Music. Since Wackie's was founded in 1976, Bullwackie has produced and released records with the likes of Sugar Minnott, Lee Scratch Perry, The Love Joys, Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Dennis Brown, and - as Zakia discovers - even impromptu sessions with the likes of Mohammed Ali. After enjoying a resurgence of interest in more recent times, following a reissue series via Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald's Basic Channel dub techno label, Wackie's today enjoys multi-generational cult status. In this podcast Zakia and Bullwackie reflect on his life and career, and the exciting discovery of his stolen archive of unreleased Wackie's recordings that Lloyd has recently recovered, and is now in the process of mastering, in some cases nearly 50 years after they were first recorded. Check out the NTS Guide To Wackie'sPresenter - Zakia Sewell, Producer - Lizzy King, Sound Recording - Josh Farmer & Zara Wladawsky, Editing - Femi Oriogun-Williams, Mastering - Felix Stock, Composer - Jennifer Walton, Talent & Outreach - Samuel Strang. This is an NTS Podcast, discover more at www.nts.live. When Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus pioneered Dub Techno in the early '90s, a genre with origins in Detroit, Germany, and Caribbeans, the majority thought that is just a moment and that it will be short-lived. Thirty years after and the genre still keeps 'reinventing' itself with countless releases by several generations of producers who keep pushing the boundaries and keep exploring the genre's depths. In theory, Dub Techno has a simple formula - rhythm and texture. With technology nowadays, producers can dig deeper and further develop these two ingredients and make something unique. The Vilnius-based record label, Greyscale is known for its Dub Techno aesthetics and it's been around for almost a decade. Their latest release, 'Dancing Street/Skyscraper Street', welcomes Martin Schulte, a talented producer hailing from Russia, to their impressive catalog. This double-single release is accompanied by brilliant remixes from Greyscale founder grad_u and Giegling and Delsin affiliate Vril. Vril's remix of 'Skyscraper Street' brings the pure essence of Dub Techno, a genre that broke new ground in terms of electronic music that one might listen to away from the dance floor. The track is a slow-burner with lots of details that flicker and create a cosmic atmosphere that can do wonders on your home set up as well as the part of a warm-up set during the Techno marathon in a dark club. 'Dancing Street/Skyscraper Street' is coming out on June 16th via Greyscale.
