Dr. Omar Guzman reflects on how a practice to cultivate more respect shaped the way he interacts with his patients. Link to episode transcript: https://tinyurl.com/2fwen962 Episode Summary: As an ER doctor in an overworked healthcare system, Omar Guzman isn't always able to build the relationships with patients the way he'd like to. For our show, Omar tried a practice called the 7 Elements of Respect. By contemplating his own motivations and biases, practicing deep listening and prioritizing relationship-building, Omar was able to develop a meaningful connection with a patient and was reminded of why he decided to pursue medicine. Later, we hear from Diane Johnson, the creator of this practice, to learn more about the multifaceted aspects of respect, and how developing empathic relationships can shape and strengthen our sense of community. Practice: Acknowledge the conflict and affirm your commitment to understanding and moving forward. Ensure that you are staying honest and true to yourself. Hear new perspectives by practicing deep listening. Recognize the importance of emphatically interacting with others. Let go of any pretenses or sense of ego by practicing humility. Notice how these actions affect your internal motivations. Practice building relationships and connections with others. Today's guests: Omar Guzman is an ER doctor in Visalia, California. In the words of Jack Torrance "Go Check It Out!" After a bit of a false start, Sean is joined by Nathan from 'Midnight Screening Podcast' returns for more horror goodness. My Guest: Nathan on Twitter: Nathan Needs A Username @needing_name Midnight Screening on Twitter: @Screening_Pod Warning: This is one of those reviews that is entertaining, but it is "a bit wordy". Discussion Points: -Sean begins with a quote from William Friedkin. -The initial reception to the film, when it was released. -This film sounds really underwhelming if you describe it. -The impact of Diane Johnson's screenplay, which she co-wrote with Stanley Kubrick. -The fantastic music. -Brian Clough: the greatest manager England never had. -The effectiveness of not telling the audience everything and "abiding with inconsistencies". -The innovative use of the Steadicam system, with the guy who invented it working on the film. -Sean got his money's worth out of that Special Features disc. -Nathan discusses the subliminal messages in the film, particularly the shifting geography. -Stanley Kubrick's working relationship with the cast, particularly Shelley Duvall: "the elephant in the room whilst discussing The Shining" as Nathan puts it. -James Cameron's similar temperament whilst directing. -Even Steven Spielberg thought that Jack Nicholson was overacting. -The background of Jack Torrance and Danny Torrance's relationship. -Sean loves that scene, but hates that word. -The Apollo 11 Moon Landings. -Stanley Kubrick's filmography. -Nathan and Sean reminisce about their Defend It Yourself: Resident Evil (2002) review. -Drop kicking a [zombie] dog in the face. Raised Questions: -How is it that one of the scariest films of all times being with the shot of a yellow beetle driving through the Colorado Rockies? -Are they ghosts? -Is Stephen King happy with any of his films? -Who tells their kid about The Donner Party? -How great would Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon have been? -Does this film constantly put the audience on the back-foot? -Did J.K. Rowling take inspiration for The Goblet of Fire hedge maze from The Shining novel/book? -Did you know there were Razzie nominations for this film? -Why did Kubrick do so many takes? -What convinced Kate Winslet do another water film with James Cameron? -Why does Sean keep bringing up football managers to his mainly-American audience? -Does this film unwind you? -Is there any alcohol left at the Overlook Hotel? -Did Jack Torrance drink to cope with having 'The shine'? -Was Kubrick just a big fan of horses? -Is the film an analogy for Schizophrenia? -Do people lower their expectations for 'horror' films? Random Recommendations: -Capricorn One (1978). -Doctor Sleep (2019). -Room 237 (2012). -Artificial Intelligence (2001). Thanks For Listening! Today on Script Apart – something new! For a while, we've wondered how to cover great screenplays by writers who are not able to come on the show or are sadly no longer with us. Which led us to the idea of Script Club – a book club, but for screenplays. We'll be inviting great storytellers onto the show in the coming months to discuss scripts they adore by screenwriters who are not able to come on the show themselves. Kicking off this intermittent series of bonus episodes is an icon of modern animation – Lee Unkrich, director of films like Toy Story 3 and Coco.Lee was an integral creative force at Pixar for over 25 years before stepping down in 2019 following the incredible success of Coco two years earlier. That film told the tale of a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead. Lee's favourite movie, a film that he's poured a decade of his life into quite literally writing the book on, is similarly inhabited by ghosts and apparitions from the great beyond, in a very different way. Since he was a teenager, Lee has been obsessed with The Shining – Stanley Kubrick's seminal horror, co-written with novelist Diane Johnson. It's an obsession that recently culminated in a genuinely epic three volume book for publishing house Taschen, full of brand new interviews with all sorts of creatives who worked on the movie, as well as unseen photos from the film's creation.During his research, Lee – who was granted unheralded access to the Kubrick archives – read draft after draft of the film, gaining an astonishing insight into Kubrick's writing process. On the episode, recorded in early December in London's Picturehouse Central, he recounts some of the biggest changes across those different iterations of the Shining screenplay – including a subplot involving a scrapbook that would drastically change the feel of the film, and a more blood-soaked ending that saw practically every character meeting a grisly end. Yes, even poor little Danny.Lee also weighs in on the film's unique place in our film culture as this subject of constant speculation and theorising about its hidden meanings, sharing some of his own interpretations of the script, and breaks down key scenes and characters. This was a fun experiment to record. If you like it, and want to see us record more in this bonus format, let us know! We'd love to hear your feedback. POP ART, WHERE I FIND THE POP CULTURE IN ART AND THE ART IN POP CULTURE. Join me and podcaster and film enthusiast Nick Rehak as we discuss two films about haunted hotels, The Shining and The Innkeepers. THEY CHECK IN, BUT DO THEY CHECK OUT: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. It's vacation time. You make your reservations. You find what you think is the perfect get away. You register. And then…well, I can't say because it's just that gruesome…Sounds like it's time for Episode 76 of Pop Art, the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture, and I'll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. This time round, I am happy to welcome as my guest, podcaster and film enthusiast, Nick Rehak, who has chosen as his film the Stanley Kubrick horror classic The Shining, while I have chosen new filmmaker Ti West's small indie The Innkeepers, both films about haunted hotels. And in this episode we ask such questions as: Does Kubrick believe in ghosts? What are the two kinds of haunted house/buildings movies? Who said: God is a big, black slab from outer space and the devil is a bartender named Lloyd? What did Ti West have to say about The Shining? Why did Kubrick make The Shining? What did co-writer Diane Johnson think of Stephen King? Why do horror movies focus so much on female characters? How long did it take to shoot The Innkeepers? What Razzie Awards did The Shining get nominated for? Why is it wrong to call the two girls in The Shining twins? Who dubbed Jack Nicholson in Italy? Life couching has been one of the best things I have done for my wellness. For my wellness then takes over all aspects of my life. Having the chance to sit down and talk with a life coach was such a pleasure for me. Learn how Diane Johnson got to be where she is today, serving others by helping them heal and thrive! Well for that we go back to her early adult years and being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. For some this we knock us down and we could very easily loss hope. Diane however was able to find extraordinary growth and opportunities. Shifting than to becoming a wife, mother, and now life coach. Taking "life tools" that she has found to help herself any others, creating programs based on these tools. Working with you to help guide you through the hiccups that can come with life. Thank you Diane Johnson for finding your true path and being in a space to serve other, as you do so well.
Tune into our Podcast with one Diane Johnson, a Real Estate Investing Rock-star, who attended one of our seminars and took that information and hit the ground running. Diane shares some of the most important guidelines in real estate investing to others who are interested in learning how to build their own business. In the seminars she hosts, Diane shares mastermind techniques and helpful field experience that she obtained through REIW material and guidance. - Focus - devising a plan and sticking with it will guarantee prosperity. Most successful people throughout history would agree that they stayed dead center focused on the goal they were aiming for. - Organization - there are mountains of paperwork and crucial, time-sensitive material that is involved when it comes to real estate investing. Having a system in place is important to making sure the checklist is completed on time. - The Buyers' List - this is one of the first research topics that should be developed. This list will be where you go to close a sale.
Today, we're looking at the classic horror movie, "The Shining" (1980). It's such a superb film, that each time we watch it, we find a deeper meaning. This time the "restroom" scene with Delbert Grady and Jack Torrance really slapped us in the face. After doing some digging online, we found an excellent “Scraps from the Loft” interview with Stanley Kubrick's co-writer - Diane Johnson. We'll attempt to lay the groundwork for what makes the Overlook Hotel a haunted nightmare and whether or not the ghosts are real or all in Jack's psychotic mind. The Fantastically Terrible Character or Creature is Robert Shaw's portrayal of Quint in 1975s mega-hit Jaws. Hats off to the man that had his manliness eaten in the most manly way possible…by a 6,000 pound man-eater. There will be lots of blood, major family dysfunction, ghosts, the collective unconscious, freaky twins and terror!
