Why can't America contain the fentanyl crisis?

The Real Story

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid which is up to 50 times more powerful than heroin, is now the main driver of drug overdose deaths in America. The US Drug Enforcement Administration says 67% of the 107,375 US deaths from drug overdoses or poisonings in 2021 were linked to fentanyl or similar opioids. US authorities blame Mexican drug gangs for supplying fentanyl to users across the US. Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says his country has proof that illegal shipments of the powerful opioid drug fentanyl are arriving from China; while China's foreign ministry has denied that there is illegal trafficking of fentanyl between China and Mexico. The US government is deploying law enforcement to crack down on fentanyl dealers and also taking steps to prevent and treat substance use and the harms it produces. But why is it still struggling to contain the fentanyl epidemic? Would stronger US cooperation with Chinese and Mexican authorities make a difference? What should President Joe Biden's administration do going forward to tackle the fentanyl crisis? Shaun Ley is joined by: Regina LaBelle, who served as acting director in the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in the White House when Joe Biden became president in 2021. She now directs the Addiction and Public Policy Initiative at the O'Neill Institute at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington DC. Vanda Felbab-Brown, Director of the Initiative on Nonstate Armed Actors and a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, a nonpartisan think tank based in Washington. He now works for law firm Michael Best and Friedrich and its consultancy, which provides advice on drug policy to clients including healthcare companies. Ms. Pittman is appointed to the Texas Department of Agriculture Industrial Hemp Advisory Council by the Texas Agriculture Commissioner.  She is also a Non-resident fellow at Rice University Baker Institute of Public Policy, Drug Policy Program.  She is on the Board of Directors for the Texas Hemp Coalition.  She has worked extensively in Texas and surrounding states to bring hemp and marijuana laws to fruition. As a result, Ms. Pittman earned the 2020 Texas Lawyer Trailblazer and 2020 National Law Journal Trailblazer awards for Cannabis Law.  Finally, Ms. Pittman Chairs the American Bar Association's Cannabis Law & Policy Committee for 2021-2022, which she spurred the creation of by presenting the ABA's first marijuana law CLE in 2016. From her involvement in the nascent cannabis industry, Ms. Pittman has represented a broad range of clients from investors to ancillary service and product providers to “plant touching” companies — farmers, processors, manufacturers, laboratories, distributors, and retailers. Some of these clients have now expanded into other countries. In pursuit of becoming an authority in this area, she spent two years in Colorado, and she understands the many challenges facing marijuana and hemp businesses, such as tax, banking, insurance, and regulatory compliance issues, and she has grown a vast network of experts to assist in these areas. Could a Law School Diploma Substitute for the Bar Exam? (Ep. 2)

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, five U.S. jurisdictions opted to suspend their July 2020 bar exams. Instead, these jurisdictions granted licensure to new attorneys through "diploma privilege.” That's the practice of admitting new attorneys to the state bar, and allowing them to practice law, contingent on their graduation from an ABA-accredited law school only. It does not require taking and passing a bar exam. Wisconsin is currently the only state to permanently offer diploma privilege, and it is only available to graduates of its two in-state law schools, Marquette University Law School and University of Wisconsin Law School. Critics of the bar exam have long argued that a timed test, based on short-term memorization of how to apply a vast amount legal rules, is not a true measure of legal competency. And now, with a string of remote testing snafus during the pandemic, many in the legal community are asking whether diploma privilege is a better option. Standing in the way of these fundamental changes are many state supreme courts and bar associations who have authority over who can practice law in their jurisdictions. Additionally, those opposed to diploma privilege argue that, whether it's accounting, medicine, or law, licensure exams are there for a good reason—to protect the public from incompetent practitioners. In this second episode of our podcast series on the bar exam, [Un]Common Law will explore the arguments both for and against diploma privilege. In this episode we speak with: Sam Skolnik, Washington-based legal industry reporter for Bloomberg Law. Efrain Hudnell, a 2020 graduate of the Seattle University School of Law, now an attorney with King County prosecuting attorney's office in Seattle. Daniel Tokaji, Dean of the University of Wisconsin Law School. David Wiggins, retired justice of the Iowa Supreme Court. David Krutz, managing partner in the Milwaukee office of Michael Best and Friedrich.

Sunday Morning Podcast | The Moody Church

Our natural default is to try to do things on our own. But when trouble comes, whether it's relationships, temptation, anxiety, or sin, we realize that we aren't strong enough to do it on our own. The spiritual strength we need is found in our Savior. We need His strength for our weakness.   Three keys to spiritual strength: Rely on the Holy Spirit: To be empowered by the Spirit means that Christ dwells in our hearts. We must fully rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to renew our inner self. How do we know if we are relying on the Holy Spirit? We should check the desires and motivations of our heart. Are you faithful to God in the small things? Are you consistent in practicing spiritual disciplines? How do you go about making a difficult decision? Are your future goals something you can accomplish on your own or only with God’s help? Know the Love of Jesus: Love is the foundation of all that we are in Jesus. Great strength is found in the security of Jesus’ love. Do you know how much He loves you? You cannot be a spiritually mature person if you don’t grow in the knowledge of how much you are loved by God. Recognize God’s Abundant Power: God loves to use ordinary people to show His extraordinary power.   Takeaway: God’s power is made perfect in our weakness.   Where do you need God’s power in your life today?   Ephesians 3:14-21

Sunday Evening Podcast | The Moody Church

The resurrection of Jesus Christ changes our hope for the future.   In this passage, we look at three results of the resurrection for our present perspective.   Transformative Change: In heaven, we will experience an instantaneous change, from the perishable to the imperishable. Only Jesus can give us the resurrection change that we need. Ultimate Victory: At the time of the resurrection we will experience victory over death, both physical and spiritual. Faithful Living: Jesus' victory over death through the cross should motivate us towards faithful and steadfast living over the long-term.   1 Corinthians 15:50-58

Sunday Evening Podcast | The Moody Church

What will heaven be like? Because we sense that what we are now is not fit for heaven, it can be hard to imagine what is to come. There are particularly prevalent misconceptions about what our future experience in heaven will be like.   In this passage, we explore three characteristics of our resurrection bodies: Our resurrection bodies will be fit for heaven Our resurrection bodies will be distinct from our earthly bodies Our resurrection bodies will be like Jesus'   1 Corinthians 15:35-49

Sunday Evening Podcast | The Moody Church

The resurrection of Jesus is critical to the theology of the Christian faith. If the resurrection isn't true, we lose so much.   In this passage, Paul plays theological dominoes by asking: What do we lose if there is no resurrection? We have no hope We have no future We have no purpose   May our faith in the resurrection not just reorient our future destiny, but our current reality.   1 Corinthians 15:12-34

Why is the Resurrection so pivotal to our Christian faith? In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul makes it crystal clear that there is no good news if there is no Resurrection. The gospel loses all its power if Jesus did not rise from the dead, for then our faith would be in vain. What we believe about the Resurrection changes everything.   Why is the resurrection essential for the gospel?
