Historia La historia de Mercyful fate, comienza cuando Kind Diamond abandona el grupo Black Rose, y se une al grupo Brats, en el que tocaban 3 músicos que prácticamente formarian Mercyful Fate en el futuro. Hank Shermann y Michael Denner ( guitarras ) y el bajista Timi Hansen. Brats se disolvió y King y Shermann formaron un proyecto por su cuenta y Denner y Hansen colaboraron con Danger Zone.Una llamda a King para que entrase a formar parte de Danger Zone significó la oportunidad de unirse de nuevo los cuatro.Con la introducción de Kim Ruzz ( bateria), Mercyful Fate había nacido oficialmente. Mercyful Fate es una banda de estilo Heavy Metal con letras oscuras, la cual fue y sigue siendo la herencia musical y artística de la mayoría de los grupos de heavy metal y black metal principalmente. En la lírica se puede encontrar temas sobre misas negras y de adoración al demonio. La música juega con melodías lentas y rápidas, también se puede apreciar un marcado hard rock progresivo es sus ritmos (como en el track Satan´s Fall). Comandada por el carismático King Diamond, personaje artístico de Kim Bendix Petersen que favoreció al crecimiento de la escena black metal escandinava. Fundado en Copenhague (Dinamarca) en 1980, experimentan un gran auge en la escena «metalera» europea (como son Raunchy y Mnemic), llamando la atención de los jóvenes por sus poderosos, siniestros y emocionantes temas, gracias a la habilidad del guitarrista Hank Shermann (nombre real Rene Krolmark) y destacando la particularidad vocal de King Diamond (nacido como Kim Bendix Petersen). Graban varias demos y temas sueltos para recopilatorios. Y por fin en el 1982 graban un mini-Lp para Rave-on records. Luego llegarian "Melissa" y "don't break the oath". En 1983 la banda grabó su primer LP: Melissa, que salió al mercado al mismo tiempo que el segundo álbum de Manowar y los primeros trabajos de Metallica y Anthrax. En este primer trabajo ya se puede apreciar el camino que la banda seguiría en los temas de sus canciones: visiones demoniacas, sacrificios satánicos, resurrección de muertos... y esto, añadido a la imagen de King Diamond marcaron un hito en la evolución en el campo de la música Heavy y del Metal. Este disco incluye la canción que le da nombre al disco y que es uno de los temas más representativos de Mercyful Fate. De este modo la evolución de King Diamond, desde que empezó a tocar hasta la formación de Mercyful Fate, se había completado y consolidado para formar su estilo único y personal. Durante la gira Europea de Melissa se gestó su segundo disco: Don't Break The Oath, que vio la luz en 1984. En este disco la variedad vocal de King alcanza sus cotas mas elevadas, haciendo que sus fans, con la imagen de la cruz de tibias invertida que King utilizaba como micrófono, tomaron como estandarte, consolidaran el éxito de Mercyful Fate. En ese disco, los temas más representativos son A Dangerous Meeting y Come To The Sabbath, enlazando este ultimo con el tema Melissa de su anterior disco, en lo que se va apreciando hacia donde tiende el inconfundible estilo de King Diamond (el enlazar unas canciones con otras para contar una historia). De este modo Don't Break The Oath se convirtió en el primer disco de underground metal (el término de Black-Metal se empezó a popularizar mas tarde) que entró en Bubbling Under, una prestigiosa sección de la revista musical Billboard y se quedo a punto de entrar en el TOP 200 (se quedo en el puesto 202). Pero este era el principio del fin. Durante la gira por América, los roces entre King Diamond y el guitarrista Hank Shermann (así como con otros miembros de la banda) empezaron a crecer y finalmente estallaron separándose a principios de 1985. Hank Shermann, irónicamente, formó la banda Fate (no tuvo ningún éxito) mientras que King Diamond (ayudado por Timi Hansen y Michael Denner) formó la banda conocida como King Diamond que es un estandarte del Black-Metal y una referencia obligada del Gothic. De todos modos Mercyful Fate no descansa. Lovecraft hasta una historia sobre un castillo en España (lo cual es, cuando menos, sorprendente). El siguiente disco saldrá en 1996 bajo el titulo de Into The Unknown donde los temas satánicos vuelven a cobrar importancia y de nuevo las referencias a H. P. Lovecraft son evidentes.Dos años más tarde (en 1998) se publica Dead Again en el que predominan los temas satánicos y fantásticos mezclados a partes iguales entre sí. Quick and easy, episode 9 went out between 7 and 10 pm on 4 March 2021.  it was pretty uneventful other than near the end when the wifi failed and I had to reset everything.  It only affected the live audience and the podcast is fine, it's just an irritation that breaks the all-important rhythm.  I kicked off with Mr Big off their debut album and a track called ' Merciless', which showcases the amazing interaction between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan.  Next up two Rick Rubin productions 25 years apart, ZZ Top with " I Don't Want To Lose, Lose You'  and The Cult with ' King Contrary Man.  A highlight of the first third of the show was revisiting a band out of San Fransico called Hell Fire.  I played a couple of new tracks from Ricky Warwick, vocalist from the Black Star Riders, and Todd La Torre, vocalist from Queensrÿche. Both albums are very strong, it's been a good year for new releases so far.  Local stuff included Jasper Dan, The Burning & Piet Botha.  Punk was taken care of by The Distillers and Sex Pistols.  And then we had the usual classics by W.A.S.P., ACDC, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, and Motörhead.  All in all a good mix of old, new, hard and soft, you should find something you dig amongst this lot.Artists featured:  Mr Big, Scorpions, ZZ Top, The Cult, Wolfmother, Dio, Hell Fire, Jasper Dan, The Burning, Ricky Warwick, Todd La Torre, David Bowie, Ian Hunter, Marilyn Manson, Avenged Sevenfold, Halestorm, Machine Head, ACDC, Aerosmith, Circus of Power, Motörhead, Sex Pistols, The Distillers, White Zombie, Buckcherry, Walking Papers, Iron Maiden, Kiss, W.A.S.P., Bulletboys, Van Halen, The Pretty Reckless, Metallica, Mercyful fate, Piet Botha, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, the Darkness.

Episode 2 of season 4 aired on 14 January 2021.  I really enjoyed this show, it was a breeze, maybe because for the first time ever we didn't start with a bang.  The chilled sounds of Cold Chisel's 'Way Down' off The Last wave of Summer  was long a long pull of a cold beer after a hard day.  After that, it was all guns blazing for a while.  We checked out Texas Hippie Coalition, then some Thundermother, my current favorite all-girl rockers, and then it was off to the classics with deep purple and 'Highway Star'.It felt like a really good mix of lesser-known bands with the megastars, we had big names like Rammstein, Megadeth, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, and ZZ Top along with Newsted, Massive Wagons, Adrenaline Mob, Hatebreed, Phil Campbell, and The Hitchers.  Highlights for me were the bit of reminiscence with Rose Tattoo and Guns 'n' Roses as well as celebrating my current love affair with Parkway drive.  Check out Viva The Underdogs it is a spectacular documentary.  For some reason it was a very Aussie heavy show, we hit 6 Aussie bands, Cold Chisel, Rose Tattoo, The Screaming Jets (that was fun, I played F.R.C. which I doubt gets a lot of radio play :-) ) The Lazys, Parkway Drive, and of course ACDC.  SA was represented by The Diamond Dogs and the amazing Johnathan Martin off his The Infinite Highway album.  All in all a great show.  Artists Featured:  Cold Chisel, Texas Hippie Coalition, Thundermother, Deep Purple, Mötley Crüe, Halford, Newsted, Massive wagons, Phil Campbell, Mötorhead, Rammstein, Alter Bridge, Badlands, The Hitchers, Sex Pistols, Rose Tattoo, Guns 'n' Roses, The Screaming Jets, the Lazys, Ramones, Hatebreed, Led Zeppelin, Joe Bonamassa, Dan Patlansky, The Diamond Dogs, Johnathan Martin, Parkway Drive, ACDC, ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Adrenaline Mob, Saxon, Megadeth, Mercyful fate, Billy Squier, Chickenfoot & The Uninvited.

Kim Bendix Petersen, AKA KING DIAMOND is a legend of the metal world, with a huge vocal range and distinctive stage persona that helped give birth to Black Metal as we know it through his band Mercyful Fate. After he left Mercyful Fate broke up in 1985, King set out with several bandmates to create his own brand of metal in the solo project bearing his name. THEM is the second album in that project, and the first of two concept albums dealing with a fictionalized horror-movie version of King's childhood.

Daniel and Ben continue their chronological journey through the history of metal music, with the 4th of 5 episodes to cover the year 1984.
