Året er 1993 og de danske heavy metal-pionerer Mercyful Fate vender tilbage i stor stil, og optræder med de gamle venner i Metallica. 1993 huskes også for en række helt eller delvist nye navne af forskellig art som Entombed, Tool, Type O Negative, Paradise Lost, Clawfinger med flere. Mange af 70'er og 80'er veteranerne giver også lyd fra sig i året; eksempelvis Aerosmith, Accept, Rob Halford i sit nye band Fight, Deep Purple og Dio. I denne podcast kan du tage med tilbage til 1993 og alle de forskellige afskygninger af metal og hård rock. Jens "Jam" Rasmussen er studievært og gæstes af ekspert triumviratet Steffen Jungersen, Michael Stützer Hansen og Michael Denner. Nedslagspunkter: - En velkommen genopstandelse til Mercyful Fate, der udgiver deres første album i ni år, “In The Shadows”. Denner er tilbage i sit absolutte es, og Steffen Jungersen hører tydeligt, at bandet virkelig mener det med comebacket. - Lars Ulrich gæsteoptræder på albummet og Mercyful Fate varmer op for Metallica og 27.000 fans på Gentofte Stadion. Denner mindes samarbejdet med Lars Ulrich og genkalder krilleren i maven fra Gentofte. - Metallica-fans kan også glædes over bandets første live udgivelse, den massive boks “Live Shit: Binge & Purge”, der rummer både lyd og levende billeder. - Denners gamle makker, Mikkey Dee, debuterer som permanent trommeslager i Motörhead på det gennemførte album “Bastards”. Lemmy og Jungersen jubler om kap. - Svenske Entombed mikser dødsmetal og rock'n'roll på albummet ”Wolverine Blues”. Anmelderkollegaerne Steffen Jungersen og Thomas Treo tager til bandets koncert i Malmø for at klappe simultant af bandets højeffektive death'n'roll. - Producer Flemming Rasmussen tager til Tampa, Florida for at producere Morbid Angel-albummet “Covenant”, hvor han også må tørre sved af trommestolen. - Steffen Jungersen imponeres over Morbid Angel og glædes over Sepulturas energi på scenen og på albummet “Chaos A.D.”. - 1993 byder også på benhård metal fra både amerikanske Deicide, norske Immortal og Satyricon og svenske Dissection. - Blandt årets albumdebutanter finder vi lovende amerikanske navne som Clutch, Tool og Life of Agony. - Mike Tramp udskifter den melodiøse glam metal fra White Lion med en ny og mere funky og hård metalrock i Freak of Nature. - Jungersen hylder den gedigne gotiske metalrock i Type O Negative og Paradise Lost, hvilket redder hans skrivekarriere, og får overtalt Roskilde Festival til at booke det bundloyale metalband Overkill til orange scene. - De svenske rapmetallere Clawfinger albumdebuterer med gennembrudspladen “Deaf. Dumb. Blind”, mens lydsporet til filmen “Judgement Night” indeholder interessante rap-, rock-, hiphop- og heavy-hybrider. - Der er nye bevægelser fra de gamle 70'er legender Aerosmith og AC/DC, mens Guns N'Roses hylder deres 70'er helte Nazareth og mange andre favoritter. - Accept udgiver deres første album i syv år med Udo Dirkschneider ved mikrofonen, mens Anthrax debuterer med den tidligere Armored Saints-sanger John Bush ved mikrofonen. Judas Priest søger stadigvæk en afløser for Rob Halford, der debuterer i sit thrash- og power groove orienterede band Fight. - I Deep Purple slår det gnister mellem guitarist Ritchie Blackmore og sanger Ian Gillan, hvilket inspirerer til albumtitlen “The Battle Rages On”. Den forsmåede Dio udgiver sit første soloalbum efter den korte genforening med Black Sabbath, men Jungersen og Stützer savner mere mening og retning i både Purple og Dio anno 1993. 1992 var et legendarisk år på flere områder: Først et Nej til Unionen, dernæst EM-fodboldguld i en sommer, hvor den stod på solskin og varme i hele tre måneder i streg; herunder på årets Roskilde Festival, hvor tidens nye, store rocknavn Nirvana optrådte få minutter efter EM-triumfen og nogle timer efter vennerne i Pearl Jam samme sted. Men 1992 bød også på traditionel heavy metal fra Iron Maiden, Paul Di'Anno og Killers, Black Sabbath og Ozzy, som begunstigede os med et særligt koncertbesøg. Og så var der nye, solide album fra blandt andre Megadeth, Pantera, Exodus og Testament. Så velkommen tilbage til det - også metallisk - mindeværdige 1992 i selskab med studievært Jens "Jam" Rasmussen og hans geniale gæstehold: Steffen Jungersen, Michael Stützer Hansen og Michael Denner. Nedslagspunkter: - Iron Maiden udsender album nr. 9, “Fear of the Dark”, der er meget andet end titelnummeret, som Steffen Jungersen og Michael Stützer pointerer. - Steffen møder ex-Maiden frontmand Paul Di'Anno, der skriger “BOLLOCKS!” ind i Jungersens hoved, da de diskuterer den rendyrkede heavy metal-stil på det aktuelle Killers-album “Murder One”. - Ronnie James Dio er kort tilbage i Black Sabbath på albummet “Dehumanizer”, men han forlader bandet i vrede, da det genforenes på scenen med Ozzy for en endnu kortere bemærkning (i første omgang). - Ozzy annoncerer sin afskedsturné, og vil sige farvel til sit publikum på mindre spillesteder. Den beslutning betyder en forrygende koncert foran 1200 heldige heavy-hoveder i Saga, København i februar 1992. Som bonus fortryder Ozzy senere sin beslutning og fortsætter sin turnévirksomhed. - Lemmy indspiller nyt Motörhead-album med gæste indsatser fra ovennævnte Ozzy, Slash og den længe eftertragtede trommeslager Mikkey Dee. - Europa hærges af ekstrem metal, både mørk og dødelig: blandt andre fra de svenske debutanter Marduk, Hypocrisy, Cemetary og At The The Gates, engelske Carcass og Napalm Death, og norske Darkthrone og Immortal. - Studieværten besøger death metal-fødestedet Tampa Bay, Florida og møder blandt andre producer Scott Burns og medlemmer af Morbid Angel, Obituary og Atheist. - I LA er Rage Against The Machines single “Killing In The Name of” selve kernen af en rasende rap metal-revolution, mens Bodycount heller ikke lægger fingre imellem på deres debutalbum. - Megadeth gæster årets Roskilde Festival og udgiver deres femte og velkomponerede album, “Countdown To Extinction”, et par uger senere. Et “mere tilgængeligt” album, ifølge Jungersen. - 1992 byder også på hård groovy metal og thrash fra Pantera, Exodus, Testament og Kreator. - Samples og elektronik er en del af det moderne lydbillede hos Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, de innovative Fear Factory og de mere skummelt spøjse White Zombie. - Melodisk hard rock har mange facetter i 1992, der byder på både et rockopera-album fra W.A.S.P. og fængende hit-materiale fra Bon Jovi, Dream Theater, Ugly Kid Joe og Pretty Maids. - Den såkaldte grunge rock rammer for alvor landet: I starten af året koncertdebuterer Pearl Jam i Danmark… i Pumpehuset, København. Bandet optræder igen på årets Roskilde Festival, hvor Nirvana giver det, der bliver deres første og eneste optræden herhjemme. - Nirvanas Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain og Alice in Chains-sanger Layne Staley dyrker danske Mercyful Fate i stor stil. Denner beretter om begge bands, og om Zoser Mez-bassist Claus Weigangs (RIP) albumdebuterende band Jackal. - Deep Purple-bassist Roger Glover producerer et par pænere udgaver af danske Pretty Maids og af sit eget band. - Los Angeles 1990 præsenterer både puddelhundsheavy og dunklere toner. Fra henholdsvis Warrant og Danzig, eksempelvis. - Seattle 1990 byder på et tragisk debutalbum fra Mother Love Bone og et højinteressant ditto fra Alice In Chains. - Black Sabbath holder den solidt kørende på deres tredje Tony Martin-frontede album, “Tyr”, mens Iron Maiden-pladen “No Prayer For The Dying" er langt bedre end dens rygte, ifølge Jungersen og Stützer. - Maiden-sanger Bruce Dickinson har et særligt travlt år, der også indbefatter en solodebut. - 1990 afrundes i komfortzonen med AC/DC, som er tilbage med det bedste album i en rum tid, “The Razors Edge”, der dog nok har en lidt højere stjerne hos studieværten end hos Jungersen og Stützer. Vi er fremme ved seriens sidste afsnit, metalåret 1989, og vores overskrift giver sig selv: “Afrunding på metal-årtiet”. Eller i bestemt form: “metal-årtiet”, for det var i 1980'erne at heavy metal for alvor fik manifesteret sig som meningsfuldt begreb. Hvor de store bands brød igennem og hvor forskellige undergenrer blev defineret. I 1989 handler det blandt andre om genrens grundlæggere Black Sabbath, nærmere bestemt riffmesteren Tony Iommi, der får både de første og sidste “ord” (guitartoner!) i dette afsnit. Vi runder også årets bevægelser fra de danske og delvist danske bands D-A-D, White Lion og King Diamond. Desuden kommer vi omkring de store hard rock-navne anno ´89: The Cult, Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, nykommeren Skid Row og tilbagevendte Alice Cooper. Og i den helt hårde afdeling har vi fokus på bands som Sepultura, Obituary, Kreator, Exodus og Testament. Og sidst, men ikke mindst, er der de nye amerikanske navne som Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden og Nirvana. Jungersen og Denner kommenterer sidstnævnte udspil. - Den melodiske hard rock og poppede “puddelhunds-heavy” dominerer stadigvæk i 1989, hvor Alice Cooper får et stort comeback hit med “Poison”. - Koncertmæssigt topper den melodiske 80'er hard rock med to mindeværdige dobbeltkoncerter i KB Hallen i efteråret ‘89: Først Motley Crüe og Skid Row, dernæst Aerosmith og The Cult. Studieværten og Steffen Jungersen sætter turbo på tidsmaskinen. - “Kings of Metal” hedder årets album fra Manowar. Men er de så dét, Steffen Jungersen? - Et forholdsvist stille udgivelsesår for de store, klassiske heavy metal-navne, men sørme om ikke Accept omsider finder en ny sanger i amerikaneren David Reece, som præsenteres på “Eat The Heat”. - Obituary debuterer med albummet “Slowly We Rot”, som giver endnu mere growler-gødning til den nyligt såede death metal-genre. - Michael Stützer og Steffen Jungersen runder året og årtiet af i den særdeles thrashede afdeling. Ekspert-duoen diskuterer således årets udgivelser fra Sepultura, som også afholder en dobbelt dundrende Danmarkspremiere i ‘89, Kreator, Exodus og Testament. - I den sidste del af metalåret ‘89 blinker også 90'erne forude: der er funky metalrock fra Mordred og Faith No More og dunkel elektronisk debut-lyd fra Nine Inch Nails.
