Martin Popoff, the author of a new hardcover book, Judas Priest: Album by Album, joins Staci on this episode to talk all things our favorite metal gods. Martin jokes about JP's so-called “KISS album,” discusses some of their cover songs, reveals what it was like to work with guest celebs on his book (Slash, Todd La Torre, et al), and shares his own “rock and roll nightmare” which involves Queen. He also gives us a sneak peek at his next book.
Todd La TorreBest-known as the powerhouse vocalist for Queensryche, multi-instrumentalist Todd La Torre is a musical force in his own right. He joins us to discuss a special edition of his 2021 solo album, “Rejoice in the Suffering,” his songwriting process inside and outside of Queensryche, and his not-so-secret wish to record a black-metal album.Created and Produced by Jared Tuten Queensryche
This episode we are very pleased to host Todd La Torre, vocalist of Queensrÿche AND lesser known as the killer drummer that he is! In fact, Todd tracked drums on the 2019 Queensrÿche album, The Verdict in the absence the band's original drummer, Scott Rockenfield. Couch Riffs was lucky enough to get him to lend his incredible voice to an upcoming cover song, too. Stay tuned! Todd joined Queensrÿche in 2012 and has been steadily showing the world that the band can be better than ever at this point in their career. The band is touring the US in March 2023 and Todd's solo album, Rejoice In The Suffering, will be getting a vinyl release in the EU/import this month on white with blood splatter vinyl! See the link below to pre-order. Thanks for listening! If you're enjoying the Couch Riffs Podcast please support us on PATREON. Patreon support is what propels Couch Riffs and enables us to finish the cover song videos. Todd La Torre His stunning vocal range silenced critics in 2013 when Todd La Torre stepped into impossible shoes as the new lead singer for Queensryche. With new album, “Digital Noise Alliance” due in October and a second tour with Judas Priest on the horizon, we caught Todd on a rare day off to discuss Queensryche (including his most difficult songs to sing), Crimson Glory, his solo album, “Rejoice in the Suffering,” and how he manages to hit those high notes despite a penchant for cigarettes. So that, as they say, is a wrap. 2021 in its P. Season 4 ended with episode 52 and it aired live on 30 Dec 2021 on Rebel Rock Radio. It was a wonderful show featuring music released in 2021. I ran out of time and should definitely have done a 4-hour show. My biggest disappointment was not having enough time to play the title track from Deangersmith's amazing album Lead Us To Your Taker (Disable the Corrupt) or what I consider to be the best SA release this year, a gem by metal outfit Sunken State called Solace in Solitude. Other noticeable exceptions were Mastodon and Trivium and glaringly Dee Snider. So with those apologies out the way and a commitment to fixing that in 2022 let's have a quick summing up. The show kicked off fittingly with Tom Morello (feat Bring Me The Horizon) and a track called 'Let's Get this Party Started'. From there we continued with Alice Cooper's 'Hanging By a Thread' off Detroit Stories and wound our way through US and UK releases to our first SA release, Albert Frost's title track 'Sacred Sound'. Other SA talent featured included Dan Patlansky with 'Hounds Loose', Roland Suttie with 'Messages in My Head', and a stunning track from a band called Imagine&Nation out of Cape Town. The song was called 'Rivers and Dreams' off an EP called Never Be Quiet. I am hoping for more material from these guys in 2022. They definitely got an additional sale on iTunes last night and well deserved too. We checked out Nibs Van Der Spuy and Guy Buttery off Live in Lisbon. Exodus put out the best seriously heavy album in my view, we took a listen to 'Elitist'. Gary Holt has done amazing work on this album. The last hour was a rush to get to the 6 tracks that really rounded out 2021 as a fantastic year in music. My favourite SA song was 'Beautiful Evolution' by Springbok Nude Girls and my best overall song was 'My Love Remains' by Ayron Jones. It's reminiscent of 'Purple Rain' and it's loaded with emotion and has an awesome solo and just hits the spot. Comments on the Whatsapp line pretty much confirmed this song as being exceptionally good. The L.A. Maybe, Smith / Kotzen, and Neil Young were in my top 5 and I gave 2nd favourite to Volbeat and played 'Wait A Minute My Girl' before closing off with my personal album of 2021, Doom Crew Inc from Black Label Society. 'Farewell Ballad' off this seriously good album closed a great year in music and marked the conclusion of Season 4 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show. Thanks for all the support and I hope to see you for Season 5. Artists featured: Tom Morello, Alice Cooper, Thunder, L.A. Guns, U.D.O., Albert Frost, Blaze Bayley, Joe Bonamassa, Gojira, Buckcherry, Todd la Torre, Billy Gibbons, Dan Patlansky, Image&Nation, Greta Van Fleet, Exodus, Me & That Man, Ricky Warwick, Michael Schenker, Iron Maiden, KK's Priest, Nibs Van Der Spuy & Guy Buttery, Roland Suttie, Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros, Foo Fighters, The Stranglers, The Pretty Reckless, Seether, Serj Tankian, Smith / Kotzen, The L.A. Maybe, Springbok Nude Girls, Ayron Jones, Volbeat, Neil Young, Black Label Society

Episode 31 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 5 August. We kicked it off with ACDC and ' Kicked in the Teeth', the finest song ever started by vocals alone. with the vocals before the band kick in. Just to check that we took a listen to another vocal-only start in the form of Led Zeppelin's Black Dog. Some of you might say that there is some instrumentation before Rober Plant starts singing but the answer to that is it has nothing to do with the song, it is just the sound of a band waiting for their singer to start. The show was a lot more upbeat than last week for obvious reasons and we covered a huge variety of rock. everything from Ballads by Boston with 'Let Me You Home Tonight' to Slayer with 'Divine Intervention'. In fact, we even got as chilled as Rodriguez and 'Forget It'. The Jam with 'David Watts was a breath of fresh air as was Pat Travis with his amazing track 'Snortin' Whisky'. A highlight of the show was checking out two new releases. Dee Sniders' 'I Gotta Rock (Again), and Seether with ' Feast or Famine' which is a real return to form. I am starting to think a 4 track EP with some really good tracks every year is better than waiting for a new album with 4 good tracks and 11 tracks of filler every 4 to 6 years. The local stuff was a bit different this week and very Rebel Rock Radio presenter-centric. We checked out another track from Before The Hindsight by The Fismits. Mark Biagio, who presents The Crooked Beat on Rebel Rock Radio is the main man behind The Fismits and writes the songs and does guitar and vocals. We also checked out a demo by a band called Fire Horses with a track called Porsche Roller. It was a song I wrote in Cape Town and never got a chance to record so together with Adam Thomas (the legend) and Jack King Lawless we recorded it one Saturday afternoon a few years ago. It is here for posterity. We closed out with Ozzy and 'See You on The Other Side'. Artists featured: ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Night Ranger, Rush, Todd La Torre, Boston, The Eagles, Pat Travis Band, Seven Thorns, At The Gates, Loverboy, Sebastian Bach, WASP, The Pretty Reckless, Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Grand Funk Railroad, Reef, Dee Snider, Seether, The Jam, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Rodriguez, Slayer, Killswitch Engaged, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Nine Inch Nails, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sammy Hagar, The Fismits, Fire Horses, Judas Priest, U.D.O., Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne

Earth Quake We review an album that is unfortunately obscure even though it should be more well-known. A lot of this music goes unnoticed because it doesn't get re-released. Well, we do our part to resuscitate it if we can do so. Our tracks of the week are Todd La Torre's "Hellbound And Down" and Budgie's "Breadfan." We close with Lee's song "Dress Up." Cheers, everybody!

Episode 16 of season 4 started a bit differently as I was testing out the auto DJ function and instead of starting up the theme song for TSORR, it played Whitesnake. Normality was resumed quickly and we sped through some Black Sabbath and ACDC. I pointed out that 'Neon Knights' off Sabbath's Heaven and Hell is the song responsible for the world's greatest ever collective sigh. I am still deeply under the spell of the book Nothin' But a Good Time, the story of 80's hair metal so we checked out Girl and L.A. Guns. We took a listen to Bob Dylan's live version of 'All Along The Watchtower' as promised last week. The new stuff included more Smith / Kotzen and Greta Van Fleet off their brand new album The Battle at Garden's Gate. I am raving about the tracks I have heard off the soon-to-be-released Myles Kennedy album, the track we played, 'Get Aong' is superb. Other than that it was pretty much par for the course, The Burning and L.A. Cobra for South Africa, James Reyne, ACDC, and Jet for Aussie, Kreator and In Flames for metal and The Distillers and Stiff Little Fingers for punk. A highlight for me was listening to 'Dreamer Deceiver', Judas Priests' masterpiece off Sad Wings of Destiny, it is a reminder once again of just how good Rob Halford is. Artists featured: Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Ministry, Scorpions, Girl, L.A. Guns, Greta Van Fleet, The Dead Daisies, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Bob Dylan, Kreator, Gorky Park, Ozzy Osbourne, Stiff Little Fingers, The Distillers, Pink Floyd, Smith / Kotzen, Jet, James Reyne, Myles Kennedy, Twisted Sister, Probot, Dokken, The Burning, L.A. Cobra, Iron Maiden, Guns 'n' Roses, Accept, Jetboy, Great White, Hinder, Judas Priest, Todd La Torre, In Flames, Kiss.

Quick and easy, episode 9 went out between 7 and 10 pm on 4 March 2021. it was pretty uneventful other than near the end when the wifi failed and I had to reset everything. It only affected the live audience and the podcast is fine, it's just an irritation that breaks the all-important rhythm. I kicked off with Mr Big off their debut album and a track called ' Merciless', which showcases the amazing interaction between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan. Next up two Rick Rubin productions 25 years apart, ZZ Top with " I Don't Want To Lose, Lose You' and The Cult with ' King Contrary Man. A highlight of the first third of the show was revisiting a band out of San Fransico called Hell Fire. I played a couple of new tracks from Ricky Warwick, vocalist from the Black Star Riders, and Todd La Torre, vocalist from Queensrÿche. Both albums are very strong, it's been a good year for new releases so far. Local stuff included Jasper Dan, The Burning & Piet Botha. Punk was taken care of by The Distillers and Sex Pistols. And then we had the usual classics by W.A.S.P., ACDC, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, and Motörhead. All in all a good mix of old, new, hard and soft, you should find something you dig amongst this lot.Artists featured: Mr Big, Scorpions, ZZ Top, The Cult, Wolfmother, Dio, Hell Fire, Jasper Dan, The Burning, Ricky Warwick, Todd La Torre, David Bowie, Ian Hunter, Marilyn Manson, Avenged Sevenfold, Halestorm, Machine Head, ACDC, Aerosmith, Circus of Power, Motörhead, Sex Pistols, The Distillers, White Zombie, Buckcherry, Walking Papers, Iron Maiden, Kiss, W.A.S.P., Bulletboys, Van Halen, The Pretty Reckless, Metallica, Mercyful fate, Piet Botha, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, the Darkness.
The Rock and Metal Profs: The History and Philosophy of Rock and Metal
Professors Court and Matt examine Seattle metal pioneers Queensryche on this edition of the Rock and Metal Profs: The History and Philosophy of Rock and Metal. Queensryche exploded on the scene in 1982 with their 4-song EP, and the world of rock and metal was changed forever. A constantly evolving band, the quintet got better and better in the 80s and 90s, producing 11 gold and/or platinum albums, and enjoying huge commercial success with "Empire." The Profs look at their early catalog, and Court talks about their more recent offerings with Todd La Torre on vocals/drums, as well and Geoff Tate's band and solo work.
THIS WEEK: We get a great review in NEWS. We make a couple of bands' dreams come true by saying their names and playing their songs in MESSAGES. We talk about NEW RELEASES from Harakiri for the Sky, Abiotic, Product of Hate, Todd La Torre, Andrew WK, Depths of Hatred, The Drowned God and Sentinels. We tell some metal jokes we made up in HOMEWORK and then that lousy BAND NAME GENERATOR has to come in and ruin it all at the end as per usual. In recent years, they've consistently delivered high-octane live shows combining the hungry fire of a new band with the tempered experience of master showmen. In this episode, we’re talking about kids and media consumption - what does science say about screen time? How do we sort out the fear mongering from the useful data? What are our own practices in the Camacho household, and what might we want to change? Leslie introduces the topic with some thoughts on the balance of screen time and other activities. We talk about how we want our kids to enjoy a wide variety of activities without relying on digital media to keep themselves entertained. Laura presents her thoughts on the research on screen time. The data is inconclusive. While scientists have made some observations in some populations, even those are not consistent across all populations. Laura rants about the tons of junk "science" reports acting like correlation is causation, and villifying screen time as the source of all evil and unhappiness in the world. The bottom line is, this is a new area of research and it's going to take probably another decade to be able to make any conclusive statements. The only evidence that shocked Laura was that across many studies, kids are apparently averaging around 6-8 hours of entertainment (not including in-school or homework-related) screentime per day. The Camacho household limits kids to 2 hours of screen-based entertainment on most days, so this left us feeling like maybe our concerns about how much time our kids are on screens are misplaced! If you read nothing else on the subject of screentime, this NPR interview with Jordan Shapiro, a Temple University professor whose background is in philosophy and psychology, is golden. Shapiro's guiding principle of parenting in the digital age is engagement and relationship. Laura loved this because it goes back to the basics of episode 80: the most important indicator of raising successful adults is parents who created a warm, trusting, emotionally-connected/involved relationship with their kids. We need to do this for our kids within the digital world. We have to engage digital content alongside our kids, and teach them when they are very young how to be discerning of the content they consume, compassionate in their treatment of the people hidden by their avatars, etc. Leslie takes a turn ranting about privacy issues, brain hacking, and the general evilness of Big Tech - knowledge from which we should not shelter our kids. We circle back to a sense of optimism: This isn't as fraught as it seems; we just have to be realistic about our situation. We have entered the digital age, we are parents of the digital age, and our parenting is going to have to evolve if it’s going to be effective.
