Former Minnesota Wild player Chris Simon died of suicide last week, and it's renewing the conversation about a degenerative brain disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE.It's a disease that affects people with repeated head injuries. Simon's family believes he suffered from the disease. But there's no confirmation, because CTE can only be diagnosed after death with a brain autopsy.During life, CTE can cause symptoms of memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, anxiety and suicidality. In the state of hockey, we wanted to learn more about the risk of CTE in hockey. Dr. Michael Stuart joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer. As a young man, the Lakota sage, John Fire Lame Deer, guided him through his first peyote ceremony and then sent him south to Mexico in search of the steps of the Ghost Dance. A lost ritual of early humanity.. These steps led Michael to the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, famous for its sacred mushrooms. From the 1960s through the 1970s, Ani lived in the Mazateca's most remote cloud forest and became the only outsider who was ever allowed to collect the sacred mushroom species of the region. During the 1980s, the steps of the Ghost Dance led Ani to the remote tribes of the Amazon Jungle. With his Amazonia Foundation, Michael was instrumental in fighting the epidemics among the Yanomami in the rainforests of Venezuela. His work in Venezuela was subsequently featured in the 1994 documentary, Yanomami, Keepers of the Flame, which won the US Environmental Film Festival's Best Documentary of the Year. Dedicated to helping the Yanomami survive the epidemics, Ani would periodically leave the jungle to raise money to support the medical effort. In this time he took on many different careers. He became an author, producer, university lecturer, and radio and TV guest speaker. During the early years of the 2000s, Ani focused his attention back on the Northern States of the Americas and worked to repatriate some of the very last genetically pure Bison to the Brule, Lakota tribes on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. While on Rosebud, Ani responded to the requests of tribal elder Leonard Crow Dog and brought an eyeglass clinic to the reservation. Because of his efforts in South America and Mexico, and his work to build a ceremony house for the renowned healer, Grandpa Roy Stone, the Amazonia Foundation was honored by being included as an organization under the umbrella of the National Congress of American Indians. Michael Stuart Ani is a writer, musician, director and explorer.  In the 1960s and 1970s, he lived in Mazateca's remote cloud forest and became the only outsider who was ever allowed to collect the sacred mushroom species of the region.  In the 1980s, he resided with the Yanomami people of the Amazon Rainforest, later co-founding the Amazonia Foundation in 1991.  With this foundation, he was instrumental in fighting the epidemics among the Yanomami.  This work was subsequently featured in the 1994 documentary, Yanomami, Keepers of the Flame, which won the US Environmental Film Festival's Best Documentary of the Year.   He also directed the documentary Coming Home, about the repatriation of pure American Bison to the Lakota people of South Dakota.   After many years guiding explorers through the remote parts of the Amazon, Ani was inducted into the Explorers Society under the guidance of Sir Edmund Hilary and Thor Hyerdahl. As a young man, the Lakota sage, John Fire Lame Deer, guided Michael through his first peyote ceremony and then sent him south to Mexico in search of the steps of the Ghost Dance. These steps led Michael to the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, famous for its sacred mushrooms. From the end of the 1960's era through to the 1970's, Ani lived in the most remote part of the region. He became the only outsider who was ever allowed to collect Desheto, the sacred mushroom species of the deep tropical cloud forest of Chicon Nindo. He was instrumental in fighting the epidemics among the Yanomami people in the rainforests of Venezuela. He also helped to create a school to teach local indigenous people to be healthcare officers in the emerging Alto Orinoco Biosphere Reserve. His work in Venezuela was subsequently featured in the 1994 documentary, Yanomami, Keepers of the Flame, which won the US Environmental Film Festival's Best Documentary of the Year. Keepers of the Flame also became the feature film at the 1994 Brazilian Earth Summit. In 2002, Ani focused his attention back on the Northern States of the Americas and worked to restore some of the very last genetically pure Bison to the Brule, Lakota tribes on the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. While on Rosebud, Ani responded to the requests of tribal elder Leonard Crow Dog and brought an eyeglass clinic to the reservation. For Michael Stuart it was the competitiveness between siblings that ignited his passion for running. Squaring off in a half marathon against his older sister, Michael probably never considered that one day he would be completing an undertaking that has been described as “very very close to the most amazing,, audacious feat of endurance … ever”. Specifically, this audacious feat was a continuous run of the three S-K routes in the Tararua ranges, the Main Range, Tarn, and Valleys routes. Roughly 80 km each way with a combined elevation of 16,000 vertical meters for the three, this was an undertaking that very few thought was doable. About 87 hours and 240 km later, Michael triumphed. Hear about “no sleep ‘till Kaitoke”, trail angels, sore feet, hallucinations, and the impetus to complete such a legendary journey on this week's episode of Dirt Church Radio. He has spent much of his adult life with indigenous people in Central and South America where he has learned a number of the languages and has been instrumental in helping keep ancient knowledge alive. Michael has dedicated himself (and sometimes risked his life) to honour this mission because the knowledge that has been nearly lost but still carries living threads is essential for the survival of humanity as we enter ever more deeply into a crisis that calls out urgently for a radical re-understanding of our place in nature and the cosmos altogether. As an added "bonus," Michael is a lovely and wise soul with the gift of the silver-tongued raconteur.

Michael Stuart Ani joins me for the 10th episode! He is the author of the incredible book we talk much around called The Ghost Dance: An Untold History of the America's. He's also co-founder of the Amazonia Foundation in 1991, and has recently started the non-profit the Talking Plants Foundation, as well as another project called The Healing Garden we talk about in this episode. He's helped fight epidemics in South America, especially with the Yanomami, and is engaged in work in a similar vein with Covid 19. This conversation to me really strikes deep into the heart of what this podcast is about in a big way. Michael's story is almost like the alchemical transformation of the individual in order for the collective to go through the needed changes for life to continue. This episode is about some of the mythic history of the America's, The Ghost Dance, prophecy, and what it means for the times we're going through right now. Michael Stuart Ani has been a student of plant wisdom for almost 50 years.  As a young man, he was guided by the Lakota sage, John Fire Lame Deer, through his first peyote ceremony and then sent him south to Mexico in search of the steps of the Ghost Dance.  In the 1960s and 1970s, he lived in Mazateca's remote cloud forest and became the only outside who was ever allowed to collect the sacred mushroom species of the region.  During the 1980s, the steps of the Ghost Dance led Ani to the remote tribes of the Amazon Jungle.  With his Amazonia Foundation, Michael was instrumental in fighting the epidemics among the Yanomami in the Rainforests of Venezuela.  This work was subsequently featured in the 1994 documentary, Yanomani, Keepers of the Flame, which won the US Environmental Film Festival's Best Documentary of the Year.   After many years guiding explorers through the remote parts of the Amazon, Ani was inducted into the Explorers Society under the guidance of Sir Edmund Hilary and Thor Hyerdahl. Michael Stuart Ani is a farmer, writer, and advocate for the protection of the environment. He has lived and worked intimately with some of the most remote indigenous communities of Central and South America and has been carrying the ritual steps of the Ghost Dance for decades. In the 1960s and 70s, he was the only outsider allowed into Mexico's Sierra Mazateca cloud forest where he developed a lifelong relationship with an entheogenic mushroom called Deshetō. He later spent 12 years with the Yanomami tribe of Venezuela, fighting epidemics. Edwin Nieves and Greysa Baez have been dancing together as a professional dance couple for 5 years. They are dancers, choreographers and qualified instructors with a burning passion for dance. Edwin and Greysa have been traveling the world representing their island of Puerto Rico in places such as Canada, Panama, Colombia, New York, Texas, Dallas, Chicago, Italy, Guatemala just to name a few. Edwin Nieves has a background of dancing the traditional puertorican music from to the most prestigious band in the island called GIBARO de PR for 5 years. Greysa Baez comes from a ballet and jazz background belonging to one of the most important dance studios in PR called Academia de Baile Julie Mayoral for 14 years.  Together they have achieved many goals like 2nd place winners in the Canada Salsa Congress 2009 and 2010, 3rd place winners in the PR Salsa and Hustle festival 2009, 1st place winners in the PR Salsa and Hustle 2010 and finalist in the world known competitions PR Salsa Open 2010 and World Salsa Championships 2009. Edwin and Greysa have had the opportunity to share the stage with different artists of the genre like El Gran Combo de PR, Luis Enrique, Michael Stuart, La Sonora Poncena, Luisito Carrion, Andy Montanez, Lalo Rodriguez, Roberto Roena, Raphy Leavitt y la Selecta, among many others.
