Well, we're here, reaching far across those new frontiers. It's time for us to take a long, VERY long look at Sonic's latest mainline outing and one of the most dramatic reinventions of the series to date, Sonic Frontiers. Was it worth the five year wait since Forces? Is this truly the foundation we hope to see future games built upon? And will we ever stop talking about how good the writing is? (Let's be honest, that last one's easily a no.) So walk forward through the cold dark, and join us for what is easily our biggest episode to date. 0:00:00 Intro/Main topic: Sonic Frontiers 0:03:26 How did we get here? 0:10:58 Game feel 0:46:48 Minibosses and aesthetics 1:05:30 Story (Kronos Island) 1:45:00 Ares Island 1:58:16 Chaos Island 2:16:15 BIG and the Egg Memos 2:27:00 Rhea Island 2:37:37 Ouranos Island and final boss 2:54:40 The ending 3:07:05 The music! 3:30:08 Final thoughts 3:35:12 Outro Amie Waters on Twitter Frontiers comic by JezMM - Twitter Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence Sonic Frontiers | Complete Story (Japanese, Translated) Sonic Frontiers: Sonic's Back, Baby!

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on that classic sim, SimCity. We very briefly situate it in time and talk a little bit about Will Wright before talking over some of the strangeness that is this game (or toy). Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Tutorials or A Few Cities Issues covered: which version and why, establishing the SimUniverse, Wright and describing his design process, a good representative for our art form, a simulated ant farm toy, setting it in its time, licensed titles, the origins of the game in practice and in theory, a wide variety of influences, industrial design, where other designers get their influences, working in a space with other designers, picking your battles and choosing conflict, different sims being developed at the same time, legacies, a recognizable space, playing with it like a toy, setting your own goals, differences in the motivation for play, a very Western lens, making assumptions and scope, a Christian church as a statement, designing to constraints, what you're building and what you're not, meeting the citizens' concerns, zoning and pipes and infrastructure, how cities grow in reality and the intersection with history, the newspaper as a conduit for information and setting and feel, the weird content in the newspaper, advisors and the pulse of the people, being grounded, the things that are your concern, budgets and taxes and deficits, audio associated with taxes, "Read my lips: no new taxes," being careful with incentives, replaying MegaMan levels, audio budgets, the names and lore of MegaMan, listening to music when you code, generated art, humans as creators and consumers of art, art as conversation and exploration, enjoying procedurally created levels and worlds, AI assistant tools, kudos to the hosts, being humbled by how our games touch people. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Will Wright, The Sims (series), MAXIS, Spore, SimAnt, SimCopter, SimTower, SimEarth, MegaMan 2/X, Prince of Persia, Populous, Tetris, GameBoy, Castlevania (series), Star Trek: The Next Generation, Batman (1989), MYST, DOOM, Day of the Tentacle, Star Fox, Secret of Mana, The 7th Guest, Bill Gates, Link's Awakening, Raid on Bungeling Bay, John Romero, Christopher Alexander, A Pattern Language, Urban Dynamics, Star Wars, Alien, June Longo, Shigeru Miyamoto, Pikmin, Legend of Zelda (series), Civilization, Populous, Sid Meier, Black & White, Dungeon Keeper, Cities: Skylines, X-COM, Dark Souls, Mrs Reckis, mysterydip, The2ndQuest, NES, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, OCRemix, Metal Gear Solid, Valheim, Minecraft, Parham, Republic Commando, Skyrim, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: More hours? Hard to know how to schedule this one :) Links: -Mega Man 2 (Original Version) by The Minibosses (metal medley of MM2 tracks) -Mega Man 2: Tickle My Wily by Star Salzman (kind of an epic orchestral/electronica OCRemix piece) -Cataclysmic Clash by Game Over (MM3-inspired, but quotes recurring music from MM2- also has lyrics!) -Mega Man X Guitar Medley by FamilyJules Twitch: brettdouville or timlongojr, instagram:timlongojr, Twitter: @timlongojr and @devgameclub DevGameClub@gmail.com

Scott is on a bender somewhere in Arizona. Please welcome very special guest star Rogelio Castillo! He comes ready to throw down with a Mutant League Football reference. From there we dive into retro video game sounds which became a genre all its own with bands like the Minibosses or The Advantage creating gems from NES 8 bit sounds. Was Contra inspired by the movie Predator? Rogelio does great work at motorcitybengals.com plus his true passion which is broadcasting through podcasts about the Tigers. Somehow we try to find the remaining value with terrestrial radio in 2022. Rogelio has a lot of actual radio experience and he laments the death of radio stations from the 90s and 2000s that tried to be unique. Luke says female audiences are dominating all mediums today. David Cross closes the radio chatter about as well as any human being could. Rogelio provides us with arguably the finest minute in Is It Safe podcast history. Find out for yourself. You guys sent us 4 emails this week and we are creaming our jeans in ecstasy because of it! Of course we get sidetracked 50 times as we try to read them. Rogelio provides us with an actual case of cultural bias within the system. It turns out Luke and Mike's hometown of Hartland had bigots living in it many years ago. Shocking. Mike Starr, Luke's brother, animation, Valerie Bertinelli, Licorice Pizza and societal pacification also get air time. Sloan closes down today's services. Give us your thoughts on any of this nonsense by emailing isitsafepod@gmail.com

ouTube creator Declan Black joins us on the Mythinformed podcast to discuss everything from take down videos on YouTube to the role of YouTubers in Atheism. We were first introduced to Declan's channel leading up to #Mythcon IV. Declan was firmly against the de-platforming campaign that was taking place to try and force us to remove some of our speakers. He dedicated many videos to this subject and was criticizing those that were involved with promoting the campaign.  Declan takes us through why he started his channel and why he focuses on social justice instead of atheism. Declan was aware of the atheist community, but was drawn to the YouTube community instead. Although he still considers himself an atheist he feels that the social justice community is much more important to focus on at the moment. Declan's channel is growing very quickly and his videos are getting more and more attention. Make sure to check him out and subscribe here. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjYIwOnxkACYwhNGBWnEOzw

In Defense of Ska

Nerdcore hip-hop entered mainstream consciousness in 2016 when a contestant on Jeopardy mentioned being a fan of the genre. Then, host Alex Trebek made a joke about fans of the genre being losers. Mega Ran, one of the main figures nerdcore (Hip-hop that focuses on video games, comic books, anime and other “nerd” topics) posted a diss back at Trebek. It quickly turned into a full on diss track with every major nerdcore rapper. At shows, Mega Ran had the audience shout, “Suck it Trebek!” Today we show how nerdcore is connected to ska. This year, Mega Ran released a kids album called Buddy's Magic Toy Box, which has a ska song (“Recess”) on it. He modeled the song, after “Super Rad!” by The Aquabats. And he brought on Jer from Skatune Network as well as Stacked Like Pancakes to play on the track. It's a killer song. Mega Ran's relationship to ska goes even deeper. MC Lars introduced him to several artists in the genre years back. They'd listen to ska while on tour. Mega Ran loves the genre so much, he proudly wears a shirt that says, “Ska and Pro Wrestling are the Only Legitimate Forms of Art.” We discuss all of this as well as other tracks on Mega Ran's record, Buddy's Magic Toy Box. There's songs about fruit, bullying, self-esteem and one on the history of rap music. It's got a reggae groove as a tip of the hat to DJ Kool Herc and the genre's Jamaican roots. We also talk about how Mega Ran got a song in Kevin Smith's film Clerks 3. We talk about chip/ska artist Lo(u)ser ie Chris Graue. We discuss video game math rock band The Minibosses who famously cover the DuckTales theme song at their shows, and we talk about Mega Ran's new music festival in Yuma, AZ called Dream Master Mixtape Music Festival. Former IDOS guests AJJ and Open Mike Eagle played the festival this year. Plus, with the help of IDOS friend Dane Jackson, we ask Mega Ran several pro-wrestling questions. If you'd like to support us and listen to early access, ad-free episodes with bonus content, check out our Patreon! If you like our theme song, go download the EP Lives by Slow Gherkin. They wrote the opening and closing songs for our podcast. You can get both tunes from their Lives EP. Also, check out Dan P and the Bricks two LPs. They provided the mid-roll ad transition music. Support the In Defense host Aaron Carnes by purchasing a copy of his book, In Defense of Ska. The 2nd, expanded edition of In Defense of Ska will release in May 2024. Co-host Adam Davis has a band called Omnigone. Their latest record, Against The Rest released on March 31, 2023. The In Defense of Ska editor Chris Reeves runs a record label called Ska Punk International. They have new releases coming out all the time.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
