While being groomed and mentored to become an instructor, Leo also developed into a world-class competitor representing the famous Gracie Humaitá competition team successfully in various prestigious events. Leo's many accolades include Multiple-time Medalist at the World Championship or Mundials, Pan-American Champion, 2x Brazilian National Champion and multiple-time Rio de Janeiro state champion. “The Wizard's” success as an active competitor was even more remarkable in light of the fact that his primary commitment was always to be an instructor. Teaching for up to 10 hours per day at the Academia did not leave the young martial artist with much time to prepare for competitions but his technical skill allowed him to compete at the highest levels. His teaching has also reached high levels, having served as Rickson Gracie's assistant at seminars worldwide, and recently being recognized as the 2022 International Martial Arts Instructor of the Year.

Grappling Rewind: Breakdowns of Professional BJJ and Grappling Events
This week on the show Maine and Emil recap the 2019 IBJJF World championships we talk about every single black belt finals match that happened during the event for the men’s and women’s adult divisions; and tons of other matches in the event and any showcase moments we thought stood out. In news Garry Tonon declined his ADCC invitation, focusing on MMA and his upcoming bouts in One Championship. Erberth Santos, and his rumored two-year ban from IBJJF competition as a result of the BJJ stars incident. We talk about how you can win a Grappling Rewind Podcast patch. Check out our Instagram for more details on how to win. We kick off the recap talking about the men’s black belt roosterweight division we saw Mikey Musumeci dethrone the returning division GOAT Bruno Malfacine. We also talk about Caio Terra’s bye in the division and the implications of Mikey winning the division, and the 13-second submission victory that won him the title. We move onto the light featherweight division that featured a four way close out between the Cicero Costha team with a close out in the finals between the Miyao brothers. The featherweight division we see more action and we see Maine, and the rest of the team start to get prediction picks from last weeks show incorrect. This trend continued into the lightweight division where we saw Lucas Lepri take his sixth world title. In middleweight we talk about how stacked the division is and the finals match between Gabriel Arges and Isaque Bahiense Braz. Then in the medium heavy division we see Felipe Pena fresh off his injury at KASAI to put a stamp on why he is one of the best in the sport over Gustavo Batista. After that we move into previews of the heavyweight division and see yet another first-year black belt in Kaynan Duarte crowned as champion taking on perennial top contender and former multiple time world champion Leandro Lo, in a match that really cemented Duarte as having one of the best first years at black belt ever. Things go off the rails on the super heavyweight division as we talk about Mahamed Aly vs Nicholas Meregali and the fireworks associated with the finish of this match; with Nicholas Meregali taking his second world title, and one of the most impressive submissions and matches of the entire world championship. In the ultra heavyweight division Marcus Almeida "Buchecha" does what he does and submits Ricardo Evangelista in impressive fashion after running up a larger point total. We talk about many of the open class absolute division matchups. Including Keenan Cornelius vs Nicholas Meregali in a phenomenal closely contested match. We also talked at length about Leandro Lo vs Keenan and how the team thought the decision was justified. After that we move onto the women’s divisions starting with the roosterweight upset of Rikako Yuasa by Mayssa Bastos. In light featherweight division we talk about Tammi Musumeci taking the victory over Amanda Monteiro becoming the first brother sister combo to win World championships in the same year. In featherweight division Ana Carolina Schmitt, upsets Bianca Basilio to take the title. In light-weight division for the women Bia Mesquita once again shows us why she is one of the best women in the world in her submission Armbar victory of Charlotte Baumgarten. The middleweight division saw Anna Carolina Viera Srour victorious over Laura Hallock. In medium heavy we see Andressa Cintra victorious over Luiza Monteiro. The heavyweight division we see Nathiely De Jesus, come out on top over Fernanda Mazzelli. In the super heavyweight division Claudia Doval takes the championship beating Venla Luukkonen. In the women’s absolute we see Nathiely De Jesus Face off against Bia Mesquita in a fantastic finale to the world championships. Recorded on 6-3-2019

You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life. In today's episode, I have a conversation with Matt Thornton about parallels between Stoic Philosophy and mixed martial arts, particularly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Even though you might not practice martial arts, this conversation has lots to offer. We talk about mental toughness, discipline, goal-setting, personal development, handling adversity, challenging yourself, open-mindedness, ego, and much more. Matt Thornton was one of the early group of Americans to become involved in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu having been introduced to it in 1991. He was also the first person from the state of Oregon to receive a black belt in the art. Matt has worked with some of the best MMA fighters, grapplers and combat athletes in the world including UFC hall of famers Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, and Forrest Griffin. He has also produced Oregon’s first and so far only Mundials world champion. New York Times best-selling author Sam Harris said, “Matt Thornton is one of the clearest Martial Arts instructors I have come across.” As of this writing, Matt has awarded thirteen Brizilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and his very own Straight Blast Gym has produced multiple UFC fighters (including the biggest UFC Champion in history Conor McGregor) – multiple BJJ world champions, including black belt medalists – and currently stands as the world’s leading organization for functional martial arts, combat sports, and self-defense. Matt’s main emphasis over the last decade has been addressing superstition as it relates to the fields of sports training, combat sports, and martial arts. His methodology known as aliveness was designed as a tool to help people distinguish between fact and fiction. He is currently working on a book which will cover the topic of violence and its relationship to both combat sports and skepticism. Tait Fletcher Tait Fletcher comes to Sunnyvale and sits down to talk about Jiu Jitsu, MMA, UFC and more ! @TaitFletcher TenthPlanet/Jackson'sMMA O.G., Stuntman. Actor. BlackBeltSwag. DEATHSQUAD Fighter Tait Fletcher has had quite an enigmatic history. The complexities and accomplishments of his road are not lost on him. He was born and raised in Michigan and it was here that his work ethic and diligence afforded him a scholarship at St. Johns College, a classical literature studies program, in Santa Fe, NM. While looking for a distraction from a grueling study schedule, Tait found what was to become the finest MMA gym in the world, Jackson-Winklejohn MMA. He started as a distraction from school, but soon everything else became a distraction. Over the next decade Tait rose to one of the best grapplers in the world. He was championed and medaled in hundreds of tournaments, including the Mundials, Pan-Am Games, Grapplers Quest and many more, he earned his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He fought in several hundred stick fights with the Dog Brothers and Stray Dog fighting fraternities. His love of the sport and competitive nature evolved to his career as a respected MMA fighter. Tait was a forerunner in the sport of MMA through its crucial growing period. What he learned as a professional fighter ingrained in him the most important tools and values he has. Stunt Man Nearing the end of his interest in MMA, Tait decided to pursue another life-long dream of being a Stunt Man. As he strode successfully down that road, many directors and stunt coordinators had different ideas for Tait and saw within him a natural ability on screen. It became time for Tait to sharpen up his skills as an actor, a dream that seemed impossibly unattainable, but as he'd always shown in his history, the unreasonable dream was always a welcome challenge Actor Like the world of fighting the natural progression of Tait's commitment to his onscreen craft has led him from working as a stuntman in such hits as Paul, Thor and Red Dawn, to being featured with acting roles in Schwarzenegger's Last Stand and as the villain hunting Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in this years hit, 2Guns. What I'm getting at is this kid is one to watch in the action world!! Speaker Tait also helps many others achieve their dreams too. It is something he has carried with him throughout his life. He's well studied in nutrition and functional movement, as one would imagine and he has taken many of his old teammates at Jackson's Gym to new levels of excellence. Tait owns and manages his own gym specializing in empowerment in Santa Fe, New Mexico, called Undisputed Fitness. Undisputed Fitness contains 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu and CrossFit Santa Fe. He is also busy creating a podcast called the Tait Fletcher Show, at the urging of his good friend Joe Rogan. The Tait Fletcher show is his vehicle for urging, empowering, educating and engaging with his growing fan base and helping others towards further function and confidence in their life. So stay tuned and #staybulletproof.

World class jiu jitsu competitor, John Herring joins the Funky Monkey MMA Radio crew to discuss the upcoming Mundials tournament and much more!
Vinicius 'Draculino' talks with Stephan Kesting about how surfing beach fights brought him into jiu-jitsu, what it was like training with the top Gracie and Machado fighters in Rio in the 1980's, and how self defense and vale tudo training were incorporated into the classes. He also talks about the early BJJ competition scene, and how BJJ has changed over the last 3 decades. His contributions to the Spider Guard Position, and why he gets more nervous for BJJ competition than for MMA fights. Then they move on to why he thought that many matches at the 2012 Mundials reminded him of two spiders having sex, the rule changes, he'd like to see to make jiu-jitsu competition more exciting, and why he makes even his BJJ world champions do self defense twice a week All in all, it's a merry romp down many BJJ topics, past and present.
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the changed business climate for mixed martial arts following the ratings success of last Saturday’s EliteXC show on CBS. In light of this, we covered the news conference Thursday in New York, where it was announced that the Affliction mixed martial arts promotion and real estate mogul Donald Trump had entered into a partnership, with Trump buying an equity stake in Affliction. The inaugural Affliction show takes place Saturday, July 19, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and will be shown in the U.S. on pay-per-view. We got a brief comment from Trump about why he chose to invest in Affliction, and spoke with Tom Atencio, vice president of Affliction, about the company's business plans, as well as their intention of creating unified MMA championships by working with the new sanctioning body, WAMMA. This Saturday night, June 7, WBC super welterweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KOs) will defend his title against Sergio Mora (20-0-1, 5 KOs) from "The Contender" series. This fight takes place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., and will be shown in the U.S. on Showtime.
