As the team prepares for its first-ever playoffs, she sits down with fellow season ticket holder Edward Keenan to discuss a first-place finish for the team, the astonishing MVP-calibre performance of Natalie Spooner, what she loves about Maltais, why she has put so much time and energy into supporting and helping promote the team, and what she's looking forward to in the playoffs. Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Cheryl Pounder joins Leafs Lunch to recap Canada's quarterfinal win. Pounder shares her thoughts on Canadian forward Sarah Fillier living up to all of the pre-tournament, Natalie Spooner finding a new level, why this edition of Team Canada is the deepest she's ever seen, how the women's game has grown in Canada over the past decade, Jamie Lee Rattray's impressive contributions in limited playing time and why she is such a Swiss-army knife, and more.
On the eve of Olympic competition, it is bracing to see that Women's international hockey is no longer a tale of two countries. Canada- USA is the rivalry that North Americans love of course, but Finland, Russia, Germany are all serious contenders nowadays, which is all for the good of the game. Canadian forward Natalie Spooner is counting the days to Beijing now. And it may seem like a paradox, but she is convinced that all the pandemic isolation has actually brought the Canadian national team to new strengths. Nobody asked for time alone, but when it happened, everyone had the scope to work on individual skills, and to focus on the many small things, on ice and off, that can make each separate member of the Beijing roster stronger. Believers in wholistic team building might demur, but there is no arguing with Canada's domination in last August's World Championships. And isolation or not, when the team comes together, as Spooner tells POV host Anastasia, it really really really comes together. Veterans like herself are more than happy to help the newest generation of players find their happy place in the mix. Good vibes in the locker room translate to good team cohesion on the ice. This is a national team that has every reason to believe in itself. Like Spooner says, “If we're a goal down…we know we are a team that can score four times in a period.”
Jackie Redmond joins the show to chat about making her NHL on TNT debut last night, how Matthews' Arizona roots are perceived by American hockey media, and Connor McDavid's comments about Evander Kane (0:16). Later, Natalie Spooner joins to discuss the synergy within Canada's Olympic roster and taking on a leadership role with this year's team (28:01).The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Media Inc. or any affiliate.

Natalie Spooner—our Amazing Race Canada sister and Canadian Olympic Hockey champion! Natalie started playing organized hockey at the age of four, and after high school was offered a scholarship to attend The Ohio State University. She played for the Buckeyes for four seasons, and holds the all-time goal-scoring record for the school! In 2012, Natalie was drafted to play for the CWHL's Toronto Furies before centralizing in Calgary for a chance to earn a spot on the roster for the 2014 Olympic Team… which she did! And the Canadian women's hockey team won GOLD in Sochi! In 2018, Natalie helped Canada bring home the silver from Pyeongchang, and she hopes to represent Canada again at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games! In 2014, Natalie—along with teammate & friend, Meaghan Mikkelson—competed on season two of the Amazing Race Canada. As if Canada didn't love these two enough already… their domination of season two solidified them in our hearts! Also in 2014, Natalie became the first woman in hockey history to claim the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games and the Clarkson Cup in the same year. One reality show wasn't enough for this incredible woman! In 2019, she swapped the hockey skates for figure skates, and competed with figure skater Andrew Poje on season 5 of Battle of the Blades! They earned themselves a second place finish, and very impressively—Natalie lifted ANDREW up during one of their routines. In 2020, Natalie returned to the show as a judge. One of the things we admire most about Natalie is what she has done for girls & women in sport. She is a Fast & Female REAL Role Model, and has a high performance hockey academy for girls. Natalie is beautiful inside and out, and Adidas obviously picked up on that as they recently scooped her up as an athlete for Team Adidas! This conversation was fun and light-hearted, and we covered a lot of ground… including our mutual love of Celine Dion. We know you'll love Natalie as much as we do… enjoy! https://www.nataliespooner.com/
Like so many Canadians, Meaghan Mikkelson's priorities are firmly rooted in a love for her family and teammates and respect for the game. A graduate of The University of Wisconsin's hockey program, Meaghan led the team to back-to-back NCAA Championships, won the Olympic gold medal for Canada in Vancouver 2010 and followed that up with a win at the 2012 IIHF World Hockey Championships. In Sochi in 2014, Meaghan added an element of hockey toughness to her growing resume. Playing with a broken hand in the Olympic Final versus the USA, she assisted on the opening goal for Canada that sparked the comeback that will be talked about for decades. Meaghan joined teammate Natalie Spooner on Season 2 of The Amazing Race Canada winning an impressive 7 stages en route to finishing second in the finale. They were voted "Canada's Favourite Team" by fans of the number-one ranked show in the country. After Sochi, Meaghan took some time off from hockey to have a baby before returning to the team with the goal of representing Canada in Pyeongchang 2018. She was successful in doing so, and helped Canada bring home a silver medal. Following the 2018 Olympics, Meaghan and her husband Scott decided it was time to add another “player to their team” and Meaghan took another year off to have her second baby. Though it would be easy to put her skates away and retire now, she's not done yet. With her sights set on the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, Meaghan is facing some of the greatest challenges she has ever encountered in her career as she balances motherhood and career. But that's not going to stop her. In this episode: Being a fearless parent, pursuing your goals and your dreams while raising human beings, is hard! Avoid comparisons and judgement, stay in your lane, and recognize the amazing things you are doing and the fearlessness this requires. Self-care and wellness does not involve a one size fits all approach. Do your research, try things out, and see what works for you. It takes a village, in motherhood, in work, and in pursuing Olympic dreams! It's important to recognize when and where we need help and to not be afraid to ask for it. Connect with Meaghan: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikkelson12/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MeaghanMikkelson12 Website: http://www.meaghanmikkelson.com Mentioned by Meaghan: The 5 Minute Journal: https://bit.ly/3mTEcbv On this episode of The Part-Time Jungle Podcast, I had a truly amazing conversation with Meaghan about motherhood, hockey, the Amazing Race Canada, wellness and self-care, her challenges and successes, and strategies that have helped her along the way. I was absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to have this conversation with Meaghan! However, I will admit that I was so nervous but… this quickly slipped away as soon as we started chatting. Meaghan is down to earth, easy to talk to, incredibly warm and kind, and keeps it real when it comes to the juggle of motherhood and work. THE JUGGLE Being a professional athlete is a large part of Meaghan's work and what she does. However, she sees herself as any other mom or any other dad or parent out there. She is trying to balance everything and to do all of the things. Meaghan is trying to be good at her job and also be the best parent she can be. CANADIAN NATIONAL WOMEN'S HOCKEY TEAM Meaghan is 35 years old, a mom of a five-year-old and a two-year-old, and is training full-time with the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team. She is hoping to play in her fourth Olympics coming up in 2022 in Beijing, China. As a female hockey player, it's not really a lucrative sport. The pay equity is not there and so Meaghan has to work on the side as well. Having said this, she knows that she is very lucky to do what she does. Meaghan does a lot of public speaking and event appearances. She has a number of great sponsors and is a brand ambassador for them. She is able to tie her work outside of hockey, back into hockey.

In this episode, we sit down with Toronto Furies forward Natalie Spooner. The Scarborough born player shares with us her journey from her youth power skating and minor hockey league days, where her passion for the game first began. From this she is able to give meaningful advice to young players who share that passion today. Looking at the successful career that Natalie has worked for, it sometimes overshadows the relentless pursuit and adversity she faced in her younger years. This was the crucial time that Natalie had to spend finding her role which had her focus on becoming a confident and consistent goal scorer. Her tactics of getting the puck past other teams goalies is definitely a big tip for our young players to listen for. Her relentless work ethic didn't go unnoticed when the opportunity arose for her to play international's and represent her country in the Olympics twice. Natalie shares her emotions on both winning and losing the Olympic gold medal game and in 2014 + 2018 which is the toughest trophy to win in Women's hockey. Becoming a professional athlete is nothing short of remarkable, but the player underneath that helmet has a life away from the arena and a personality worth getting to know - especially when she was the first player to compete for the National Women’s Team, the National Women’s Under-22 Team and the National Women’s Under-18 Team.
An interview with Olympic champion, world champion, and Clarkson Cup champion Natalie Spooner.
