For the 33rd installment of the Fanzine Podcast, we welcome Chris Coleman, former editor of at least two important ‘zines from the 1980s post-punk UK Midlands: Stringent Measures and What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen. The first of these zines straddled a vibrant local indie scene that included the likes of Eyeless In Gaza, In Embrace, Attrition, and the Glass Records label (about which Chris put together a special edition) along with Chris's evident excitement for early U2. What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, while maintaining the fanzine format, declared itself musically with a first issue featuring interviews with The Waterboys, The Alarm - and Johnny Thunders, to whom it later dedicated a special issue (as it did Marc Bolan). WANWTTS also put out physical vinyl – EP's and albums alike - that included the likes of The Jazz Butcher, Jasmine Minks, The Membranes, Mike Scott and Nikki Sudden, and which therefore continued to place the zine at the heart of the mid-80s indie music scene. To this day, Chris continues to release records of lost archived recordings on his Seventeen label.Chris spent a Friday night indoors chatting with podcast host Tony Fletcher about his fanzine experiences back in the day. Other fanzines mentioned in this episode include Bucketful Of Brains, Alternative Sounds and Adventures In Reality, and the conversation also diverges into the likes of R.E.M. and The Smiths. We get to hear how Chris's parents once collated and stapled and distributed zines for him while he was on holiday, and we find out which of the aforementioned musicians once commented to him, “You have great veins.” (Hint: it should be obvious.)Visit https://tonyfletcher.substack.com/p/what-a-nice-way-to-turn-seventeen for images of some vintage What A Nice Way To Turn Seventeen, to find similar posts and pages dedicated to earlier Fanzine Podcasts, and for Tony's twice-weekly writings. Thanks to Noel Fletcher for the theme music, and Greg Morton at Omnibus Press for the logo template. The Best of Jamming!: Selections and Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up 1977-86 is available from here. "Shane O'Mara Wore Mascara" Okay, so let's not be ridiculous--it's impossible to tell you a little bit about Lindy Morrison because there's so much to tell. But for the sake of time I'll condense what I can about this remarkable woman--just keep in mind this is a partial and very expurgated description of her accomplishments. My suggestion is that you read My Rock And Roll Friend, by Everything But the Girl's Tracey Thorn, who writes about her friendship with Morrison while offering a contextual explanation about why she's such an important musician, drummer and artist. The Sydney-born Morrison played in the all-female Aussie punk band Zero before joining the Go-Betweens in 1980. She was with the Go-Betweens until 1989, playing on such classic albums as Tallulah, Spring Hill Fair and 16 Lovers Lane. In addition to being a drummer, Morrison is an activist, a social worker and a humanitarian. She's worked on behalf of Aboriginal rights, women's rights and the rights of musicians with mild intellectual disabilities. Her extensive writing about gender issues in the music industry is peerless. She was awarded The Order of Australia Medal for services as a performer and advocate, and back in 2007 she was appointed as an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Music Council of Australia for her services assisting community music initiatives and guidance around performer's rights. She's a rockstar, yes, but she's also a rockstar as a person. Over the course of her career she's collaborated with everyone from Nikki Sudden to Nick Cave, and currently she's playing with Alex the Astronaut and the SnarskiCircusLindyBand with Rob Snarski of the Blackeyed Susans. Morrison is a subtle and smart drummer, whose sneaky percussive fills roll with rhythmic grace and steady muscle. And she's a blast to talk to--you're going to love her. www.robsnarski.bandcamp.com www.go-betweens.net www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
This week on The Spindle, Marc Masters and John Howard drop the needle on Swell Maps, "Read About Seymour" b/w "Ripped and Torn" and "Black Velvet." Initially released on the band's own Rather Records and then reissued by the Rough Trade label in 1979, this single presents Nikki Sudden, Phones Sportsman, Epic Soundtracks, Jowe Head, along with D. Mint and Golden Cockrill, as young adolescents. John and Marc both have personal ties to the Swell Maps crew, which they get into plus much more on this super-fun episode of the show. About The Spindle: The 7-inch record isn't just a format—it's an art form. On each episode of The Spindle podcast, music writer Marc Masters (Pitchfork, The Wire, Bandcamp) and music historian (and music maker) John Howard dive into a great 7-inch, dissecting its background, impact, and the reasons why it stands out as a small plastic piece of music history. Glass Records special with David Barker in conversation with David Eastaugh Glass was one of the key London-based indie labels of the 1980s. Early releases focused on artists from Northampton (Religious Overdose, Where's Lisse & The Jazz Butcher), and the Midlands (Bron Area & In Embrace). The label released several records by artists having later associations with other London-based indies: Creation Records (The Jazz Butcher and Nikki Sudden & the Jacobites) ; Fire Records (Spacemen 3 and The Perfect Disaster). Glass's mainstay acts were The Pastels, In Embrace and The Jazz Butcher. The label also issued material by Bauhaus member David J, and American punk band The Replacements, and the influential Liverpool Ur-grunge Walkingseeds. Founder David Barker went on to work for Fire Records, creating the Paperhouse label, taking the Walkingseeds with him, and releasing the first Teenage Fanclub album, then moving to Creation Records for 2 years.

TRACY BRYANT "A Crowded Room" A Place For Nothing And Everything In Its Place (Burger, 2017) LP/CD/CS/DIGITAL AVAILABLE OCTOBER 20, 2017 VIDEO FOR "FOREVER CERTAIN": www.youtu.be/UqhPJyrRc1Y PRE-ORDER NOW: www.burgerrecords.com Los Angeles based musician Tracy Bryant, as a one of a kind solo artist, is speaking out as an outstanding singer/songwriter who isn’t afraid to dig below the surface. With his work he is filling the gap between lush pop-arrangements and a genuine, distinctive sound. One not hard to enter, but no way to just pass by. While Tracy Bryant’s music may call out as a memento from the lonely highway, we can’t help but wish to join him on his journey. As the frontman and founder of post-punk experimentalists Corners, he recorded the group’s first album, Beyond Way, in his Echo Park apartment in 2012 with just a four-track tape recorder. While the follow-up LP, Maxed out on Distractions, was very much a group effort, Bryant has continued to cultivate the haunted, solitary sounds that permeate through Beyond Way on his own. Corners toured the U.S. and Europe extensively before Bryant decided to end the band in early 2016 to fully focus on his solo endeavors. His first full length solo album “Subterranean” was released February 19th, 2016 on Burger Records. Imbued with the studied swagger of Lou Reed and the emotionally damaged earnestness of Johnny Thunders, the 12 songs are a logical extension of Beyond Way’s dark Americana, with layered acoustic guitars, hypnotic electric leads and hushed vocals setting an eerily inviting tone. Recorded in the Arizona desert by Matt Rendon of The Resonars, it was tracked mostly live with the help of friends Joo-Joo Ashworth, Jeremy Katz (Froth) and Cameron Gartung (Mystic Braves). The album garnered positive reviews worldwide and peaked at #43 on the CMJ radio 200 chart. Upon its release, Bryant embarked on a full band European tour supporting King Khan And The Shrines which culminated with a sold-out show at the 800 capacity Columbia Theater in Berlin, Germany. The band followed the tour with a successful debut at 2016’s SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas. With an all-star new band line up consisting of Nick Murray (Thee Oh Sees / White Fence) on drums, Brian Allen (Burnt Ones) on bass and Miles Luttrel (Useless Eaters) on second guitar, the group will be on the road touring the west coast up to Vancouver Island, Canada to play Otalith Festival. To introduce Bryant’s new album “A Place for Nothing And Everything in its Place” (out on Burger Records October 20th, 2017) he will head over to Europe and the UK for a month long tour in December joined by his European backing band of Brian Allen on bass, Nick Winfrey (Adult Books) on second guitar and Leonard Kaage (Jawbones, Anton Newcombe & Tess Parks) on drums.. “A Place for Nothing And Everything In Its Place” was recorded in early 2016 in Berlin, Germany. Originally conceived to be an introspective acoustic album, the written songs, once in the studio, developed into a fully arranged, conceptual work. With the help of producer Leonard Kaage, the acoustic intention became the red line that guides the nine songs through their variety. Bryant’s lyrics go a more personal way and follow inner and outer conflicts captured through the words of a restless outsider who ends up finding the company of love. The album is filled with dreamy footnotes of piano, 60‘s percussion and a more than once appearance of edgy guitars. Imagine a classic singer/songwriter record loaded with the intimacy and grit reminiscent of Alex Chilton or Nikki Sudden. A true milestone that marks an important progression in Bryant’s career as a solo artist. The album got its finishing touch by the mastering of Los Angeles pioneer Dave Cooley (Ariel Pink, The Black Angels, M83).

Karl O'Connor had to ring up before coming on The Quietus Hour to check that it was OK to wear shorts on the hottest September day for decades. We said that was fine, as Luke Turner was in his best EBM cut-offs and DM boots look to go with Regis' musical choices: nine incredibly formative tracks from his teenage years in the West Midlands during the early 80s. To a soundtrack of Nitzer Ebb, Foetus, Cabaret Voltaire, Matt Johnson, DAF, Dave Ball with Genesis P*Orridge, Nikki Sudden, Einsturzende Neubauten and the wonderful Fad Gadget they indulge in passable chat about how techno never made sense until Karl heard Jeff Mills, doing things your own way, Thee Temple Of Psychick Youth, and listening to German records with spanking grot mags in a tiny bedroom lit by nicked traffic lights.
