Albums and All That, Starting with the letter S as in Sierra, Part 9 From Something to Shout About (Lulu) to Sophisticated Boom Boom (Dead or Alive) Oh hey, by the way... there is now a Vinyl-O-Matic Patreon (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill) Lulu with The Luvvers [00:30] "Chocolate Ice" Something to Shout About Decca LK 4719 1965 Hey hey hey! It's Lulu! This is her debut album. Despite what you might guess from her voice, she was 17 when she recorded this album. "Chocolate Ice" is the excellent title song to the very weird Gonks Go Beat (https://youtu.be/XhozBIMplQA?si=ULHH1FdCqSWJPyJ5) (Hartford-Davis, 1964), featuring Lulu and The Luvvers, The Nashville Teens, and the Graham Bond Organisation Todd Rundgren [02:40] "Hello It's Me" Something / Anything? Bearsville 2BX 2066 1972 Rundgren's 3rd solo album, spreading his musical wings a bit more than previous releases. Todd had originally written the song as a very mellow ballad with the Nazz in 1967, and was released as a b-side (https://youtu.be/FmLnDL_pNZQ?si=enMwjWzgNe_iplus) to their psyche rocker "Open My Eyes". Usually I'd go with the power pop progenitor "Couldn't I Just Tell You (https://youtu.be/fosMLTCFKQ8?si=Dgn25DMa61xCFRbJ)", but well, I'm feeling more mid-tempo at the moment. Jimmy Buffett [07:29] "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" Son of a Son of a Sailor ABC Records AA-1046 1976 Let me be perfectly clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been a Parrot Head. However, I do love cheeseburgers. This is the lead single from Buffett's eighth solo album. The single made it to #32 on the Hot 100. There's also a much-watered-down version of "Livingston Saturday Night", which can be heard to greater effect (https://youtu.be/5uizFyDRxso?si=ZfVrun8krTdxzagG) on the Rancho Deluxe (Perry, 1975) soundtrack, see also: Season 5, Episode 76 (https://vinylomatic.com/s05e76). Harry Nilsson [10:20] "It Is He Who Will Be King/Daybreak" Son of Dracula Rapple Records ABL1-0220 1974 The only new Nilsson song on this soundtrack. The less said about the actual film. Count Downe (Nilsson) is invited to take over Count Dracula's throne by Merlin (Ringo Starr). Lots of monsters and lots of rock stars, including Keith Moon and John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, and Leon Russell. Watch at your own peril (https://youtu.be/IIik_o16sro?si=WvmR54QPJ16Qmd6s). Great packaging for the record though, includine a die-cut gatefold and an iron on transfer for the cover image with "Bite Me" written in goth script below. Julian Bahula's Jazz Africa [16:15] "Molebatsi" Son of the Soil Tsafrika Records TSA 001 1982 A great collective outing composed by this South African by way of Britain drummer/composer/bandleader. I picked this one up at Revolution Records in Amsterdam. If Google Translate isn't lying to me, this title translates to "Smoker" from Swati. And a smoker it is. The Temptations [21:46] "Shakey Ground" A Song for You Gordy G6-969S1 1975 One of several excellent P-Funk-backed tracks on this album. There's a pretty excellent Delbert McClinton version of this song as well (https://youtu.be/w7JCWoxtGLs?si=tLtnwaOT1j24Tgvy). The Exbats [25:47] "Like It Like I Do" Song Machine Goner Records GONE 192 2023 And boy do I like it! Another excellent outing from Bisbee AZ denizens Inez and Kenny and friends (https://youtu.be/l-Onx5zVfMs?si=OSeD0DJHPaOZ4NGW). They pretty much just keep getting awesomer and awesomer. Big Black [28:17] "L Dopa" Songs About Fucking Touch and Go T&G LP #24 1987 Scorching. And sadly, fare thee well, Steve. To anyone interested in recording, Steve and Electric Audio provided (and still provide) a wealth of information, as for instance: Everything you've ever wanted to know about tape alignment but were afraid to ask (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXA7imybaTsFWOFpaeP8wgXNDlZ4Xc8yq&si=ZMsU_ifbEBbmp6Kh). THE FOLLOWING TRACK IS INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES. LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED

Renaissance person? Or just casting her net really wide?   A chat about a beginner-band teaching strategy which Ms. Stinson piloted at her East Windsor (Connecticut) teaching gig, which she calls “Culture Before Technique”.   STINSON BIO: Zoe Stinson is a music educator and instrumentalist originally from the Capitol Region of New York, and currently teaches grade 5-8 Band, Chorus, and General Music at East Windsor (CT) Middle School. Zoe grew up studying saxophone, cello, and voice, but always gravitated towards saxophone. In 2016, Zoe was selected to perform at NYSSMA Conference All-State, and to perform in the International Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. Zoe furthered her saxophone studies at Eastman, Crane, Hartt, and University of Oklahoma summer programs throughout high school and college, and has performed in masterclasses for virtuosos such as Arno Bornkamp, Chien-Kwan Lin, and Christopher Creviston. In 2017, Zoe attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst for Saxophone Performance. While she studied at UMass, Zoe was heavily involved in numerous activities as a student musician. Zoe was initiated into Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Sorority for Collegiate Bands, and has since become a life member. Zoe performed in the University Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, University Choral, Chapel Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, Marimba Bands, and the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band, for which she served as a Drum Major for two seasons. Aside from larger ensembles, Zoe was also associated with several notable chamber ensembles including the 4/4ths Saxophone Quartet, and the Rebel Saxophone Quartet, which traveled to Virginia for the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in 2019 with their tour program. As a soloist, Zoe has performed multiple solo recitals and been invited as a guest performer at many others. Her most recent recital, “A Showcase of the Baritone Saxophone”, was performed entirely on the baritone saxophone in effort to legitimize the instrument in the classical medium. Zoe was also a concerto competition winner at UMass in Spring 2020 performing Rhapsody by Andre Waignein on the alto saxophone. Zoe has recently begun her professional career as a music educator, and is a member of the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. Specializing in instrumental instruction, Zoe applies Music Learning Theory in her classroom with a focus on ear training. Outside of the classroom, Zoe still enjoys playing her cello to this day, and plays baritone saxophone with recreational ensembles such as the “Salsa Train” salsa band in Springfield, and “The Onlys,” her fusion rock trio in New York. On the weekends, she occasionally likes to hop into the driver seat and drive for PVTA in Amherst, MA. Barbra Streisand [00:20] "The Christmas Song" Seasons Greetings from Barbra Streisand... and Friends Columbia Special Products CSS 1075 1969 Babs takes things in a particularly saccharine direction, but I suppose not every version can be the Nat King Cole Trio. Rockpile [04:25] "Heart" Seconds of Pleasure Columbia JC 36886 1980 The iconic album from the band that until this point has backed solo efforts from Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds knock it out of the park on their only release as Rockpile. Guitarist Billy Bremnar steps up to take the lead vocals on this snappy number. Pavement [07:00] "Frontwards" The Secret History, Volume 1 (1990-1992) Matador OLE-1064-1 2015 A compilation from a few years ago of early Pavement material. This one is a live version of one of my favorite Pavement songs, performed at Brixton Academy in London on December 14, 1992. Years later Los Campesinos! would win my musical heart with their version of this song (https://youtu.be/DnEa4ES7ep4?si=WeB_oCdOz73gNL0E). The Fresh & Onlys [10:21] "Do You Believe in Destiny" Secrets Walls Sacred Bones Records SBR-056 2011 Always love that big spacey sound Wymond Miles brings with his guitar. Peter Gabriel [14:53] "Shock the Monkey" Security Geffen Records XGHS 2011 1982 If you ask Peter Gabriel what this album is titled, he will likely say "Peter Gabriel", like his previous 3 solo efforts. If you ask Geffen Records what this album is called, they will say "Security". The more you know. The Seeds [20:16] "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" The Seeds GNP Crescendo GNP 2023 1966 A top notch side 1, track 1 from these garage rock progenitors featuring the one and only Sky Saxon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQWVHvjdfZw). The Who [25:13] "Odorono/Tattoo" Sell Out Decca DL 74950 1967 The third studio album from The Who and easily my favorite Who album. Luna [38:57] "(Walkin' Thru' the) Sleepy City" A Sentimental Education Double Feature Records LP-DBL-0013 2017 A fine collection of covers from one of my favorite bands. This Jagger/Richards number orignally appeared on the Stones compilation album Metamorphosis (https://youtu.be/fRDtVsAvM-8?si=wyGkrescNCIU4vWd). It is common to reach a place where we begin to ponder what we may have lost, with regards to life opportunities and experiences, as a result of our painful experiences. These ponderings can be difficult and burden us with feeling and believing we started the healing work too late. However, all that matters is that we start it while still in this world. It is also never clear what our life would look like had certain experiences not happened.

Kim and her team work across industries serving global organizations. From leaders and executives at Adobe to Smugmug, the American Library Association, HarperCollins Publishers, and more, Kim and her team provide executives and leaders with actionable tools to build healthy, people-centered workplaces long term. She is a certified DEI and Six Sigma Leadership CEO, strategist, speaker, and consultant featured or quoted by Forbes, The New York Times, CNN, and Business Insider, among countless others — she's a sought after commentator and voice. In this episode, Kim shares her favorite mistake story about not “honoring red flags” during the process of interviewing for a job. Did she experience “micro-aggressions” or just flat out aggressions? Why does Kim say this was her favorite mistake in terms of the growth it provided for her? Questions and Topics: Unwillingness to talk about money, or negotiate salary – could they have open dialogue on other things? Attacking you for reporting the problem instead of addressing… the problem That next job – I bet you were really on guard for red flags? The need to account for past experiences of employees from marginalized groups? Stay away from saying “toxic?” Is it easier for white men to admit mistakes? Do we have a certain amount of privilege? Low # of Black head coaches in the NFL — equality of the opportunity and also the situation? You provide support for “The Onlys” in organizations – tell us about that Hiring / Promoting Black men or women is not enough?  What does it mean to use data-driven approaches to understand team member experiences over time?  “We call social media the new accountability partner” Being authentic at work — you recently wrote about a double standard related to Angela Bassett and her reaction to losing out on the Best Supporting Actress Oscar --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/favorite-mistake/support

This is an indie rock podcast, which needs to be reiterated because of episodes like this one. In this episode, Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen discuss some very un-indie rock topics. For instance, they go deep on Rolling Stone's recent article about the current state of Live, the '90s grunge band famous for songs like "Lightning Crashes" and "I Alone." Why are they talking about Live in 2023? Because things are bananas in Live-world at the moment! You have con men, QAnon conspiracy theorists, the AVN Awards, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Then they talked about Skrillex, who is back with two new albums, and the rise of early 2010s nostalgia (15:20). Oh, and they also answered a listener question about Incubus (24:07). Again, this is an indie rock podcast! In the "meat" of the episode, they inducted four new albums into the Indiecast Hall Of Fame (32:21) — in this round, they honor LPs released by Sunset Rubdown, The Elected, The Good Life, and The Fresh & Onlys. Finally, in their Recommendation Corner (53:02) segment, they shouted out new records by Philip Selway and Model/Actriz.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. According to the women in the workplace report, women who are “only's” (like me and a lot of you) have especially difficult day-to-day experiences.“Onlys stand out, and because of that, they tend to be more heavily scrutinized. Their successes and failures are often put under a microscope, and they are more likely to encounter comments and behavior that reduce them to negative stereotypes. ‘Double Onlys' (like women of color) face even more bias, discrimination, and pressure to perform, and they are even more likely to be experiencing burnout.”Does this resonate? You're not alone. In my conversation with artist and writer Adeline Er, she shares similar challenges she experienced in the workplace and in her daily life and how in combination with her Asian background, led her to suppressing her identity and voice. Adeline talks about her sexual and spiritual awakenings and how they led her to finding healing and her true self expression.Listening to Episode 33 nowHave you ever experienced lonely feelings from being an “only” at work or in life in general?Would you find it helpful to join a community of like-minded people to support and uplift you and help you achieve your biggest goals? This is something that's near and dear to my heart and what I've been considering creating for a long time. "It's one thing to accumulate that power, but when will you also use it? That is a very strategic question because it is a very limited supply — especially as an Only.” - Charlene Li How do we grapple with wanting to fit in while knowing we stand out? This week's guest is New York Times bestselling author, Charlene Li. Her purpose is to help leaders harness their power of The Only to thrive through disruption. I really admire her growth mindset and recognize it in myself, but we often don't start out this way. Charlene says that as Onlys, we have the power to see beyond what others see partly because we have broken through the barriers that come with being an Only. She argues that, in order to step into our power, we need to be asking ourselves: what tools do I have?  What can I do with that power? When should we store it up and when should we unleash it? "By standing out, I was gaining power." - Charlene Li In today's show, we talk about how to handle Imposter Syndrome, why are allies so important, and how to deal with microaggressions. “The way Onlys grow and succeed is not by maintaining the status quo, but to plant seeds, bring others in, and carve a new path for others to follow.” – Angela Chee What does moving from scarcity to abundance really mean? And how do we do it? As we start the shift back to our everyday lives, I want to share some tips and tools to help you to step back into your power, but to do so with more abundance and joy. I know from personal experience that it is all too easy to say we want to come from a place of abundance when in reality, many of us naturally revert to a scarcity mindset. At work, many of us are driven by this culture of scarcity which manifests in this feeling that there is only enough room for one, but it's time for a new model — in work and in life. “It's important to remember that the world needs you, but it starts with taking care of you.” – Angela Chee In today's show, I explain how to live in abundance, what an abundant mindset looks like, and what you can do to avoid a scarcity mindset. “There's always this feeling of there's only enough room for one.” – Angela Chee Show Notes: What is a scarcity mindset What is an abundance mindset How do we move into abundance How to thrive in competitive industries How to feel like you have done enough Episode 11-The Power Of Mindset, Gratitude and Appreciation  “When do we feel like we have done enough, accomplished enough, and are enough to just be?” – Angela Chee Advice for Moving Into Abundance: Have awareness of your barriers Focus on what you have Celebrate your wins, big and small Train your brain “Pausing to celebrate these moments in our lives allows us to feel joy and gratitude and it forces our brain to see the abundance in our lives.” – Angela Chee Thanks for being a part of this bold and powerful conversation on The Power of The Only! Retaining key talent mandates more support and encouragement for workers in the minority. So many of our current systems are set up to help men succeed. We must create similar systems for women and people of color so that they are supported in returning to, and remaining in the workforce.   Diane Flynn; Co-Founder and CEO of Reboot Accel joins Kelly to discuss ways we can better nurture the skills of those who feel like the lonely or the only in the workplace.   Diane believes; “ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) are a critical piece to creating more inclusive environments. "They are really sessions to embolden people, to give people a majority experience, many of whom never feel it throughout their day. They are the "onlys" or the "lonelies" in a lot of meetings, and all of a sudden, they can show up in a space that is safe, where they can express their full self.”  Big Takeaways:   Informal networks are just as important as formal networks when it comes to landing opportunities and new experiences. (15:00)  Women and people of color are so often subject to a minority tax in the workplace. This isn't just a women's problem or people of color problem. It is all of our problems and we must all be part of the solution. (24:00)  Every role today requires constant learning on the job. Lifelong learning is a skill everyone needs no matter how old they are. “Even after I had shows on VH1 or Nickelodeon or Comedy Central it was still like, I'm a kid from Jersey. I'm a dad who lives in the suburbs. I'm never going to have a Fox show, but you have to believe the impossible is possible.” - Dave Noll How do we continue to grow and move forward in 2021 with positivity and tenacity? These are characteristics that I work on cultivating every day. Things aren't easy right now, so we need to consciously create what we want in our lives.  And, as we all know as “Onlys,” creating what's next takes time and energy. That's why I'm so excited to have Dave Noll on today's episode. An expert at embodying positivity, tenacity, and creativity, Dave has created more than 50 television series including the Chopped franchise, the game shows America Says, Punchline, Insanity, and Face The Truth, and the new podcast game Factorious. Dave and his partner Cleve Keller joined together exclusively in 2007. With 3,300 episodes under their belts, they have become one of the most successful format development teams in the world. Dave believes that in order to have these hits, you have to pitch a lot and not be afraid of rejection. Last year alone, he and his partner created 70 plus shows, pitched in over 100 meetings, wrote more than 40 show decks, and loved every minute of it. So how does he keep going and do it with joy? "So much of television is pitching that one thing and working really hard at it, but leaving all the doors open." - Dave Noll In this episode, Dave shares his “Only” story about his early years at MTV and what he calls his "Power Of The Only Love Story". We discover what Brandon Tartikoff, the former president of NBC, said to him that shaped his outlook and what Julia Roberts, Adam Sandler, and I have in common. Listen as Dave Noll shares the secret to his success, how he maintains a positive attitude, and how to stand out when pitching or creating anything. "I hope there are a lot of prospective authors out there who really internalize your multidimensional concept of "The Only" and who start realizing that they have a concept that shines in that Only kind of way." - Jesse Finkelstein What does it take to be an author today? The Power Of The Only isn't just about individuals. It is also about shifting old systems to carve a new path. It is about not being afraid to be "The Only" to create what's next.  And that is what's happening right now. "Onlys" like you are creating what's next.  Industries, old structures, and traditional ways of thinking are being disrupted. That's what Jesse Finkelstein, Co-Founder of Page Two Books, has been doing in the publishing industry for years. Her work is evolving the traditional publishing model to help thought leaders, subject matter experts, and organizations publish leading non-fiction books. Jesse has spent her entire career in books. She has held several management roles at publishing houses, including COO of D&M Publishers and Associate Publisher at Raincoast Books, the Canadian publisher of Harry Potter. Despite the pandemic, Page Two is continuing to grow.  They recently built an in-house audiobook program and announced a new global distribution program. Jesse shares how a devastating career moment gave her the foundational courage to launch her company and how a phone call from another “Only” in the industry gave her the ability to see the gift in the challenge. "I thought that I was in it for the books for a long time, but I realized it's actually about the authors." - Jesse Finkelstein In today's show, we talk about what it takes to be an author, the differences between traditional and hybrid publishing, and what inspired Jesse to create a company that supports authors by sharing their Only with the world. Jesse Finkelstein discusses her journey in traditional publishing, how she navigated being the only woman on a management team, and how to survive in competitive industries while maintaining your integrity. "It really takes a village to publish a book." - Jesse Finkelstein Show Notes: What it takes to be an author When Jesse Finkelstein first started imagining a career in books What hybrid publishing is How hybrid publishing differs from traditional publishing Why integrity is so important How Jesse uses mantras in her work The value of traditional publishing today Advice for people thinking about writing a book How to utilize your unique market differentiator Brand and Resource Mentions The Good Fight by Liane Davey “We all have something to contribute -- to our families, to our communities, to our workplaces -- that is really unique to us.” - Jesse Finkelstein 3 Pieces of Advice or Action Steps: Come to the table being as clear as possible about your unique market differentiator Be very open Elbow grease "Across the board, publishers are some of the most innovative entrepreneurs I've ever seen, no matter what their model is." - Jesse Finkelstein Connect with Jesse Finkelstein: LinkedIn | Instagram | Twitter | Page Two Thanks for being a part of this bold and powerful conversation on The Power of The Only! "It's not that we don't recognize that it's not always fair, it's that we've determined that we're not going to let anyone else dictate our future." - Tony Chatman What can we, as "Onlys", do to ensure that we are seen as trailblazers rather than tokens? We can't control how others view us. We do, however, have control over how we view ourselves, how we show up, and how we own our voice and power. That is why I started this podcast. I believe there is power in being the only -- and so does Tony Chatman. Tony is keynote speaker, corporate relationship expert and speaker who has worked with organizations and government agencies from the US Secret Service and Chase Bank to NASA. As only the second African American to ever graduate from his university with a degree in Chemical Engineering, he shares his journey from engineering to non-profit and public speaking to stepping into his "Only". We explore why it's important to take a seat at the table and how to know if taking that seat will actually create positive change. We talk about codeswitching and how it can be an asset, why it's time to be uncomfortable, and why these uncomfortable conversations must start with us. "When we bring diversity to the table, we get to a better solution." - Tina Shah Paikeday There is a lot of division in our world right now. How will we work, serve, and thrive as our current systems are being challenged? We need diverse voices who own their voice and their power, and nobody knows that better than our guest this week, Tina Shah Paikeday. As a senior member of the Leadership & Succession team at Russell Reynolds and Associates, Tina leads the firms' Global Diversity & Inclusion advisory services. Russell Reynolds and Associates is one of the top leadership advisory and search firms in the world. Tina's work includes recruiting Chief Diversity Officers and developing inclusive leaders and inclusive culture transformation. “The work around inclusion and inclusive leadership has really shifted towards not only a focus on 'how can we empower the workforce', but then how can we use inclusive leadership for business advantage.” - Tina Shah Paikeday On today's show, Tina shares her own Power of The Only story. Tina grew up with two cultures shaping her identity. Navigating the dual worlds is what has helped her achieve success - but it has been a journey to discover that strength. We both talk about what we did to hide our identity in our early years. Tina shares the moment she began to uncover her story and realize the power in creating more inclusive environments. Tina and I also talk about the top three areas of focus for companies right now to create more successful leaders, what you can do to be more inclusive, and why knowing your story and being able to share it is an important part of showing up as a leader. "The last frontier with most of the executives leading in this area is development - development of women, of minorities, of people of different backgrounds - because we don't see them in the senior leadership positions at the same rate they're represented lower down in the organization." - Tina Shah Paikeday Show Notes: How diversity is increasing in the workplace Current trends in workplace diversity How to ensure diversity at work What experience is needed to get hired for a management position What minorities can do to increase their chances of being promoted How minorities can advocate for themselves at work How leaders can encourage diversity at work What leaders can learn from Onlys at work "The work that we do at Russell Reynolds is really helping at the boardroom level given the current California legislation as well as the global legislation on the topic." - Tina Shah Paikeday 3 Pieces of Advice or Action Steps: Know who you are Understand how others perceive you Live your full potential by celebrating who you are "The power of the only to me is recognizing the fact that all of us are actually 'onlys' and that each of us walks our own unique paths no matter what our demographic background is." - Tina Shah Paikeday Connect with Tina Shah Paikeday: LinkedIn | Twitter | Russell Reynolds Thanks for being a part of this bold and powerful conversation on The Power of The Only! "Are you ready to step up, speak up and make an impact, but not sure exactly how?  It's time to step into the gift you have been given and harness the Power of The Only." - Angela Chee Welcome to the first episode of The Power Of The Only. I'm celebrating International Women's Day, a global day to celebrate the achievements of women with the launch of my podcast. But this show is not just for or about women. I believe all of us can relate to being the only and learn from “The Onlys”- those breaking through barriers, defying the odds and creating positive change. I've put a lot of time, thought, energy and love into this podcast and I hope that it serves you. What is the power of the only? What called me to start this movement? In episode #1 I will share the story behind the podcast, a little more about me, what you can expect and learn from the show and I will also share my “5 Power Of The Only” Principles and more about how you can apply them to your business and life. These principles have helped me harness the Power of The Only and each week we will continue to explore this conversation. It all started last year when  I was preparing for a new keynote. I was reviewing the latest Women In The Workforce reports by Lean In and McKinsey and it said while there has been some progress in representation of women in senior leadership, women still continue to be underrepresented at almost every level and women of color are the most underrepresented group of all. But what it also said is that too few women leads to too many “Onlys”, women who are the only or one of the only women in the room. It says being an only is not only challenging, but their power and voice gets drowned out and they have a significantly worse experience. While I agree it sometimes may be more difficult, I believe there is power in being the only and we have so much to learn from the onlys that have navigated their way to success. I believe the challenges that onlys go through is the power-it gives you a deeper understanding, a different perspective and strength that all leaders can benefit from. I've always been an only. The only Chinese girl in my neighborhood growing up, the only Asian TV reporter at a station, the only woman speaker at a conference. Being an only was not a weakness it was my strength. Yes, we still need organizations to shift, we need a culture transformation for real change to happen, But what about in the meantime? Not just in corporate, but in the rest of society? Knowing I'm the only gives me power. But at the same time I don't focus on it. The truth is many times I don't notice. I'm at the table because I deserve to be there and so do you. Once I'm there that's when the power of the only shows up.  Power to have diversity of thought, power to plant the seed, power to be a translator for others who don't have a voice, power to bring other “Onlys” into the conversation, until one day, there will be no more talk about being the only. But how do you turn being “The Only” from a weakness into a strength? And what can all of us learn from the onlys that will help you thrive in your business and life? That is what we are going to explore….. So while the term only started as women “onlys.” I believe many of us can relate to being the only. Have you ever felt like the only one? The only person in your company, industry, community or the only one in the room reaching for your unique dreams and vision? There is a lot happening in our world. A shift is happening, we can feel it. But at times it may also feel like we are going backward. It's time for new conversations - new voices and a bolder way of thinking. Call it innovation, disruption, diversity! It's what our world needs, it's what our businesses need and it's what you need to step into your leadership. "That is what the power of the only is all about!" - Angela Chee I want to share my 5 principals of The Power the only that have helped me achieve my goals and thrive. Throughout the podcast we will continue to explore these principals as we interview trailblazing entrepreneurs, C-suite leaders, filmmakers, diversity experts, coaches, speakers, publishers maybe even a few celebrities. Are they the same? Are they different? We will ask these questions and more as we dive deeper into The Power Of The Only. "OWN YOUR POWER." - Angela Chee For now here are my 5 Principles of The Power Of The Only: Own your power Own your voice See being the only as a privilege not a burden Communicate in a way others can hear you Come from a place of abundance not scarcity What does this all mean and how can it impact your life?  Tune into the podcast to find out more. If you would like a free copy of these Power Of The Only principles and a Clarity and Vision worksheet to help apply them in your business and life click here to get access. In upcoming episodes I'll also share my advice and resources from my 20 plus years in the broadcasting, entertainment and speaking industries and answer any questions you may have. I may even coach a few of you during the show. Let me topics would you like to hear more about. Or Any Only's you would like me to feature? I'd love to hear from you. Remember you are not alone. It's time to come together. Thanks for being a part of this bold and powerful conversation on The Power of The Only! The Power of the Only

All this talk about women's empowerment, but is it really making a difference? The latest Women in the Workforce report by Lean In and McKinsey and Company says, “No!” It's not making a meaningful impact, at least not in corporate. But what about the rest of society? With the #metoo movement, a record number of women serving in the House, and a historic number of women running for President, more voices are out there.  But, are people really listening?  Drowning In Women's Voices? Why do we feel like we're drowning in women's voices, yet we still feel uncertain if anyone is really hearing us or if it will make a difference? A shift is happening, we can feel it.  But at times it may also feel like we are going backward. So what's the problem?  Women are working harder, they've been leaning in, so why not the progress we expected? Yes, we need organizations to shift, we need men in the conversation, we need a culture transformation for real change to happen,  But what about in the meantime? The report also says too few women leads to too many “Onlys”, women who are the only or one of the only women in the room.   It says being an only is challenging, their power and voice gets drowned out and they have a significantly worse experience. There Is Power In Being "The Only" While I agree it may be more difficult, I believe there is power in being the only. My whole life I have been the only, the only Chinese girl in my neighborhood growing up, the only Chinese girl in school, the only Asian TV reporter at a station, the only Asian speaker at conferences…… Knowing I'm the only gives me power. What can we learn from the onlys that will help you achieve your goals, thrive and create real change?  While many consider “onlys” women.  I believe many of us can relate to being the only regardless of gender.   What are the lessons learned from those breaking barriers, defying the odds and making positive change? That's what I'm exploring. For now here are my 5 principles of The Power Of The Only. Own your power-Know who you are, what you stand for and know you belong there. You have everything you need inside you. Own your voice-You need to speak up, stand up and share your opinions with certainty, without need for validation. See being “The Only” as a privilege, not a burden.-No, you don't stand for everyone and yes, it's not your sole responsibility.  But right now you have the opportunity, the opportunity to share, to educate, to enlighten, and open up the window for understanding and take a seat at the table.  It's a privilege. Do not waste your gift. Communicate in a way others can hear you.  Know your audience, know what you want, listen with an open heart and integrate. Once they can see you and trust you, then they can really hear you. Come from a place of abundance, not scarcity.  Yes, you are “the only” right now and the way to grow and succeed is not to maintain your status/power by keeping other only's out.  But to plant seeds, bring others in, and carve a new path for others to follow. It's time to step up into the gift you were given. Are you ready for the challenge and to take on the power of the only? You are not alone. It's time to come together. Have you ever experienced the feeling of being the only?  [Tweet "Have you ever felt like "the only" one? You're not alone. But there is power in being the only! WOMEN SIPPING ON LIFE (with doctor shannon) | Stop Drowning | Start Sipping | Daily Inspiration | Hope | Certainty | Abundanc

Two dozen years ago was the first “happiest day of my life.” And this is why… Because I’ve had countless “happiest days" since then because it was the day that YOU were born. It was a Wednesday. August 10, 1994. It was raining. My most favorite kind of day. But that day was different. I had to work harder than any other day up until that point in my life. I had to work through every breath, every feeling, every second of knowing that I was getting one step closer to seeing your precious little eyes for the very first time. Yes, that day of “hard labor”…redefined everything I had ever thought about, or considered to be “W.O.R.K.” I worked through fears and feelings of anticipation and excitement, into the most intense waves of physical pain I had ever experienced (or ever will - hopefully - thank you very much.)  Riding each contraction like a professional surfer who feels the force of the wave while gripping tight with all 10 toes - holding on for dear life - as the water breaks and the force of the biggest ride of your life comes rushing in. It started at 10 am, but you arrived at 6:19 pm. Only two weeks and two days after “they” told me you’d arrive. You had already begun to teach me patience…as well as so many priceless lessons. It was as if every moment meant something else. Something different. Something new. Something miraculous, magical, meaningful. Because it did. It was. It is. I pushed through knowing that YOU were on the other side…and I’ve watched you do the same every time I’ve seen you take another step in your own personal labor of love…YOUR LIFE. YOU. YOU. YOU. You’ve been on the other side of every breath, every heart beat, and every path as you’ve risen up to a new level of YOU-NESS. A UNIQUE YOU that has continued to take my breath away more times than I can count, yet I remember every single one of them. Like the time you were about 18 months old, and I carried you up the stairs holding you tightly as only a Mom can. And you hugged me back and said, “I luv you too Mama, I wuv you too.” You’re my one and only…but not my only ONE. I have had many little girls, now turned BIG, over the past 24 years. It’s as if each of them has had a full life in the divine 365, only to transform into another more incredible version of the previous because SHE’S still there too. That little angel with the thick jet black hair, wide brown eyes, high forehead, long fingers, legs, and toes…and a presence that gives my heart another beat every time I’m in it. She’s still there. She’s still here. Now with auburn hair, wise blue eyes, even longer fingers, legs, and toes, and that same high forehead that I still love to kiss like I did the first time I saw it. You’re still here. Making my heart happy — as it beats with a new song. It’s YOU. My NEW WAY of seeing LOVE. LIFE. LIVING. LASTING. No matter what comes with each new day. 24 times we’ve made this journey around the sun together, and I couldn’t imagine doing it with ANY OTHER… BUT WAIT. Then HE showed up too. Celebrating his 365 on the same day as YOU. US has taken on a whole new life now. And all the “losses” that led us here seem to be a part of what’s wrapped us together like a package of contents without a table. With the turn of each page, the precisely edited story unfolds. Like a portable table that makes every new place a home. It’s been there. And today, it becomes a table of YOU. HE. WE. And the celebration continues and begins. ONE special day that we get to share this table with one chair for you, one for us, one for we. Together. A Birthday Family. My precious two. In the city of twins. Two special souls. Connected deeply with mine. YOU. HE. ME. Happy Birthday to YOU, my precious Honey.  And to HE, my other Honey. Thank you for allowing me to see a new way to BE. I thank God that for this day to celebrate as WE. I love you, my sweet Anni. And I love you, my sweet Pablo!! Because regret, these if onlys; that’s not how the story starts.  The story starts with God. And God had invited the people to a life of shalom.  We usually understand shalom to mean something like “peace,” like the absence of war or violence, but the Hebrew word actually meant more than that.

Random Old Records Podcast is back from its summer vacation! Not gonna try to make up any crazy excuses, the truth is that I was running low on inspiration after 3+ years of blogging and doing a monthly podcast, and decided to put it to rest for awhile instead of cranking 'em out just to keep the streak going.Considering that it was four months in the making, EPISODE #43 of Random Old Records is a one hour MONSTER of fresh rock n' roll for your ears. It starts out with some ugly, noisy jams from Puffy Areolas and the K-Holes and crucial new punk rock from White Lung and Dikes Of Holland, hits the best tracks from the latest releases by The Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, and highlights some psych pop newcomers like The Marble Vanity and Jacco Gardner. This edition hits all the bases from the noisiest free-form freakouts to tight power pop and everything in between. It's simply a collection of the best shit I've heard all year, and I hope you all have as much fun listening to it as I did putting it together. Let's all have fun together!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! Oh wow, is it really May already? Well, according to the calendar it is, so here's EPISODE #31 of Random Old Records! April was an amazing month for rock n' roll, and I spent it buying a whole pile of records and getting my face melted off at live shows by the Black Lips, Vivian Girls, Ty Segall, The Fresh and Onlys, The Black Angels, Davila 666, Magic Jake and The Power Crystals, and YOWZA! Yeah, luckily a whole buncha sweet bands played around Cincinnati and got a fantastic turnout each time, so hopefully that bodes well for the summer and we'll be seeing even more coming soon!Anyway, Random Old Records #31 is loaded with an hour of new rock n' roll, including a BRAND NEW track from glam pop wizard King Tuff, fresh off a recent Scion A/V split single with the Hex Dispensers. It's called "Hands" and it sounds like a long lost Slade song. His upcoming LP is gonna be something else! The featured label this time around is Trouble In Mind, who should get some kinda award for putting out dozens of records without a single bad one in the bunch! This time around, you'll hear a track from each of their latest releases (Wrong Words, The Paperhead, Jeffrey Novak, and Alex Cuervo), plus Mean Jeans doing a TORRID Sparks cover from the TiM Record Store Day split 7"! That The Paperhead LP is freakin' amazing, by the way. It's a buncha 18 year old kids channeling vintage 60s psych pop through a 90s Elephant 6 lens and wrapping it all in a haze of youthful vigor and pie-eyed optimism. Not to be missed!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! The sweat continues to drip from my fingers and on to tasty new platters of wax as Vancouver is pummeled with a heat wave. The show kicked off this week with some serious feminine heat, courtesy of midnight disco-murk goddess Nite Jewel, a new CDR of outtakes by the Magik Markers taken from their recently released 'Balf Quarry' LP, the new tightly wound Little Claw on Ecstatic Peace, and a new re-issue from Grouper. No wonder my palms were so sweaty in the booth this week.New 10"er by Nerve City has been receiving many hits at home, and I couldn't be more excited for a full length LP from them due in the coming months from local label Sweet Rot. Stay tuned for more on them...Managed to snake a copy of the limited to 200 cassette (sold only at the Captured Tracks/Woodsist fest that happened a few weeks back in NYC) by the Fresh and Onlys. Wow, can that band ever punp out the tuneful garage kickers. Two 7"s, two cassettes, an LP all in one year? Scratch that...two LPs. New full length of all unreleased material due out on Woodsist sometime in September. Band of the year?Ty Segall continues his onslaught of 2009 with a handful of 7"s, a new full length and a split LP with the UK's Black Time. West Coast tour coming from the one-man wonder. Have to fit that into my schedule somewhere along the lines...Coupla' new-ish numbers popped in the mail from the burgeoning Almost Ready label. The new Pink Noise is worth the peeping, but the best of the batch is the 'World Is Lousy With Ideas Vol. 8', which contains the best Blank Dogs song I've e'er laid ears on (played on this show, thanks to Grimmertown for heppin' me that one), not to mention exclusive tracks by Pink Reason, Times New Viking, Vivian Girls, Sic Alps, and a heap of others. This one won't stick around for too much longer. Finally got to lay my hands on a copy of the Amen Dunes LP, which is slowly making it's way up the ladder of best of '09. A lot of acoustic-based lo-fi downer-pop. It's a mouthful but worth the investigatin'.Moon Duo, which is Ripley the guitarist from Wooden Shjips, continues on down the trail being burned by his mothership. Get a hold of Aquarius Records for this one, as it seems to be disappearing fast. New Blues Control finally made it's way up to Canada, and was it ever worth the wait. 4 tracks of molten psych, submerged and raised up in all the right spots. Not quite as tops as Puff, but a necessary piece of future psych.Squeezed in a nice spotlight on Indiana cassette label El Tule, which just released the Ducktails side-project Parasails. More drifting beach psych from the reigning king. El Tule has also been pumping out some other great cassettes, two of which are highlighted below. Anyone interested in some Parasails action should drop a comment below.Until next week, keep yer records out of the sun.
