It's a For Songs first! Join me in the studio for this fabulous conversation with Kevin and Jarrett from the rock/pop/indie rock trio Franklin Gotham (https://franklingotham.bandcamp.com/). This interview was recorded at Jarrett's Mixtape Studios (https://mynewmixtape.com/) in Alexandria, Va. We talk about the band's latest EP Good Times, Bad Times, and three brilliant songs: the rock-pop gem Caroline, their brilliant cover of Life in a Northern Town, and then, well, you just gotta listen to the whole interview to see what Star Words is about. Trust me, it's worth it. So sit back, grab a beer, and enjoy!
Can you believe another year has gone by? We can't! Who would have ever thought 9 years The Hustle would become what it has. As usual, we always celebrate this day with a very special guest and this year is no different. This week we welcome the wonderful Nick Laird-Clowes of the Dream Academy! The band snuck up on everyone in 1985 with the seminal and wholly unique "Life in a Northern Town". Those who were there will never forget it. They followed that up with two more equally excellent albums before calling it quits, but Nick has never sat still. After forging a friendship with Dave Gilmour, he's collaborated with him on many projects and continues to compose his own music. They recently released a fantastic 7-disc box set called Religion, Revolution and Railways that has everything you could ever want. Nick's enthusiasm will burst through your speakers! www.nicklairdclowes.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Noel catches up with Gilbert Gabriel. The keyboardist/co-writer was a member of the British trio, The Dream Academy. The band released three studio albums. Their debut, featured the band's biggest hit, "Life in a Northern Town," which went to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985. The band also had songs featured in two John Hughes movies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The Dream Academy just released a 7-CD box set called "The Dream Academy: Religion, Revolution and Railways which includes B-sides, remixes and unreleased tracks.

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cranston Dean is my guest for this episode. Cranston is a New Jersey native whose music draws from Americana, folk, jazz, country, blues, pop, and soul. He sees songwriting and performing as a way to translate and transform the human condition into beautiful works of art. Cranston's solo tours have taken him throughout the Mid-Atlantic to Nashville and north through New England to the coast of Maine. In the summer of 2017, he supported his fourth studio album, "High Beams," with a tour spanning Chicago, Minnesota, Washington, Oregon, California, and Colorado. The album was named one of New Jersey music's 17 best albums of 2017 by New Jersey Advance Media (NJ.com) Educated at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia as a jazz pianist, Cranston is the 2017 & 2016 Asbury Park Music Award winner as Top Male Acoustic Act, and the winner of the 2015 Asbury Park Music Award as Top Multi-Instrumentalist, so yeah, he's pretty talented. Cranston has an album release show at Asbury Lanes on May 28th (Northern Town), which dropped on his birthday this past May 11th. Cranston and I talk about the small-town life and jazz influences in his music, the recording of "Northern Town," how he got his start in songwriting, the value of open mic performance, recording studio lessons that helped him record from home. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist – Cranston Dean – owns the patent for being cool. The New Jersey musician strolled into the APV Studio the other day for our podcast recording and it felt as if I had had a visit from a longtime friend. We chatted about his childhood, his varied musical talents, the bands he regularly plays in, and the people who make up his inner circle. In fact, friendships and family are what sustain Cranston on a daily basis, and in all of his musical endeavors. Cranston's most recent creation is his 6th studio album, Northern Town, which will be released on May 11th. Recorded in analog in his parent's home alongside his very best friends … this album is filled with creativity, love, personal stories and many special moments. And that voice! There isn't enough one can say about the richness and texture of Cranston's vocals. To understand exactly what I mean, listen to his first released single from the album - “The Root.” Tune in and enjoy this wonderful conversation about what went into making Northern Town and mark your calendar for the album release show at Asbury Lanes on May 28.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with the incredibly talented Cranston Dean, a musician from New Jersey, whose new album "Northern Town" is set to release on May 11th. We discussed his small-town upbringing, the creative process behind songwriting, and the challenges musicians face in today's rapidly changing industry. We also delved deeper into the vibes of "Northern Town" and Cranston's experiences playing with the band Jackson Pines. Throughout our conversation, we explored concepts like the "antenna theory" and the importance of putting oneself in the right environment to create art. We also touched on the emotional high of performing and creating music that resonates with listeners, whether on a small or large scale. So join me in this captivating discussion with Cranston Dean, and don't forget to check out his album "Northern Town" on May 11th!Chapters:(0:00:33) - Returning to Small Town Music(0:15:41) - Exploring the Creative Process of Songwriting(0:22:51) - The Changing Music Scene(0:31:55) - Exploring the Vibes of Northern Town(0:40:53) - Navigating Music in a Changing World(0:50:09) - Exploring Music and Dancewww.TheTouringFanLive.commedia@TheTouringFanLive.Comwww.facebook.com/TheTouringFanLiveInstagram-@TheTouringFanLiveCopyright The Touring Fan Live 2022

Hello and welcome to The Northern Agenda podcast - back for 2023 fully refreshed after a Christmas break and ready to take in invigorating new year dive into some of the big politics stories affecting the North.Whilst we want to wish you a Happy New Year, it is not looking terribly happy for Northern town hall leaders. Northern Agenda editor Rob Parsons speaks to Barnsley council's Sir Stephen Houghton, one of the longest-serving local authority leaders in the country, about the bleak forecasts ahead for local government in our region. With 12 years of austerity cuts knocking the stuffing out of many of our local councils, and inflation biting, things could be about to get worse.Sir Stephen discusses the unfair funding system that means people in the North don't get the same public services as their southern counterparts. But a bit of good news, though! It's set to be a massive year for anyone interested in the arts and creativity with the launch of Leeds 2023, a year of culture modelled on the European Capital of Culture. The people behind it say in the next 12 months Leeds will burst into life, fuelled by creativity and the aim of opening more opportunities for more people. Abigail Scott Paul, Director of External Relations and Strategic Partnerships at Leeds 2023, tells the podcast what you can expect from the huge programme of events in the Yorkshire city. The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. Gilbert Gabriel - The Dream Academy - in conversation with David Eastaugh The Dream Academy were a British band consisting of singer/guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes, multi-instrumentalist (chiefly oboe, cor anglaisplayer) Kate St John, and keyboardist Gilbert Gabriel. The band is most noted for their 1985 hit singles "Life in a Northern Town", "The Love Parade" and their 1985 cover of the Smiths' song "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want", which was featured in the John Hughes film Ferris Bueller's Day Off in 1986.

I shared my professional background and how I became an admissions consultant, but this episode is the story of how I applied to colleges back in the day! There are some crucial lessons I learned in that journey, including how tenacious and hard working I can be when I'm on a mission. If you think this expert had a cakewalk as her college admissions journey, think again! Some key takeaways from this week's episode:Words matter when you're talking to students about colleges. The words “not college material” rang in my ears for years and used it as a rallying cry, but so many students hear similar things and are completely discouraged from trying.Remember, if your student is rejected from a school, it's not a “no” forever, it's a “no” for now. If your student's heart is set on that school, have them speak with someone on admissions to see what they need to do to possibly be accepted in the future.Reflect back on your own admissions experience when you were applying to colleges. When you're holding your students up to incredibly high standards, remember the pressure you felt back in high school, how it felt to be rejected by a school, or comments your parents made to you. Put yourself in your student's shoes. The Admissions Club Podcast is your one-stop shop for all things college admissions, complete with a nostalgic 80s playlist and Gen X vibes. It's hard to believe that we've traded in scrunchies and Bruce Springsteen posters for walking our kids through the college admissions process! But, I'm here to share my 25 years of higher education experience, with 10 years of direct college admissions experience, with you and your student so you don't have to walk it alone.Connect with Elizabeth!WebsiteFacebookYouTubeLinkedIn
Today is the 74th birthday of the musician Nick Drake. He influenced Kate Bush, Paul Weller, the Black Crowes, Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Robert Smith of the Cure [The Cure's name is derived from his song "Time Has Told Me" ("a troubled cure for a troubled mind")]. The Dream Academy dedicated one of my very all-time favorite songs "Life in a Northern Town" to him. You may also recognize his music from The Royal Tenenbaums, Serendipity, Garden State, or even a Volkswagen commercial. The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the los that he has left. Songs: "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake "Day is Done" by Nick Drake "One of These Things First" by Nick Drake "Three Hours" by Nick Drake "Life in a Northern Town" by The Dream Academy This episode is also available as a blog post: http://waldina.com/2022/06/19/happy-74th-birthday-nick-drake/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/waldina/message
Initially, the final two tracks had a lot of issues. 'Sunchyme' was overly compressed to the point that the bass would rumble and 'Flower Duet '99' was pitched way too high with a thin bassline. I have old plugins that require manual adjusting to get the sound you want as opposed to a one click solution. I spent so much time messing with the quality, that it didn't dawn on me until listening back in my car that FD was still pitched too high and that it would better serve the overall flow of the mix to switch the songs due to significant tempo changes. Everything is now fixed to my anal satisfaction. It's hard to appreciate my attention to detail until you hear the differences side by side but these were so noticeable — I felt compelled to go back and fix them for preservation. Party Favorz is dropping the fourth and final volume of the Ultimate Trance Classics series — a tribute set that's been in the works for over a year since the original release in 2010. Other than the fact that these sets are mixed much better than the original — they expand the original's reach delivering a memory trip for those club kids who were at all the raves dancing their assess off until the break of dawn. One caveat is the closing 'Sunchyme' by Dario G — a song that holds a very special place in many a heart. I opted not to go with the original (which worked) but found the official remixes that accompanied this release lacking. Club 69 (a.k.a. Peter Rauhofer) tried to remake the wheel for this song and it fell flat. The same can be said for Sasha who also contributed an official remix. The familiar choir hook lifted from the 'Life In a Northern Town' by Dream Academy (1986) set across an uplifting intrumental with piano wasn't something you wanted to stray too far from. Enter the Mastermix 'Diffusion Remix' from 2006. This version was included because not only did it stay true to the original, it's the only other remix this song should have received. By bumping up the BPM and adding a deep bassline to the original version, this remix (which borders on Eurodance) would have been the definitive dance floor version had it been released at the time, thus its inclusion. I don't think anyone will be disappointed because it just makes sense. I hope all our little Trance-loving kids enjoyed these sets as much as I've enjoyed bringing them back to life. I really was pleasantly surprised at how well this all came together after struggling to create the original series in 2010. I'll back next week just in time for everyone's Spring Break with some party music fair. Until then...ENJOY! As many of you may not know, Party Favorz hosting is up for renewal in a few days and it would be helpful if you could help pitch in to cover the costs. This is a once a year ask for donations but is not mandatory. I want to give a shout out to Gene R. ($10) for his generous donation. We're just under $100 shy of reaching our goal. Mimi Naja will inevitably be etched in annals of american music. Her style is unique but familiar, with no pretense, pragmatic to the core. I knew her first as a wide-eyed mando wunderkind ranging the grounds of Planet Bluegrass. In Fruition she's grown into a telecaster-wielding rocker with no fear. She delivered a killer upright bassline on King of the Road, and a ripping mandolin break on Things in Life, but the highlights of this session are the songs she wrote and the brutal honesty of her interview. Mimi is the truth and I'm so grateful we could share the stage with Lyndsay Pruett on this awesome session. Part One: Cyberpunk 2077 is Full of Bugs, Glitches, and Genitalia It’s an important day for Hardly Focused! Longtime co-host Katie Crepeau joins Jack and Mike for this episode. Kate has not been this podcast since the re-brand earlier in 2020; her voice, outrageous takes, and lack of filter have been sorely missed. Jack and Kate are playing Cyberpunk 2077. Resident show-dad Mike has little time for open world games, and is taking what time he does have in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Kate’s PC can run Cyberpunk like a beast; Jack’s struggles. Jack tried to avoid Cyberpunk and instead began a new file in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a game that came out in 2011. Jack admits to having purchased Skyrim yet again. Maybe he’ll do the same with Cyberpunk, when he obtains a machine that can actually run it. On a related note, Cyberpunk 2077 has a lot of bugs and glitches. One such bug results in your character’s genitals sticking out of their clothes. Jack and Kate spent a lot of time modifying their respective character’s junk… like, a lot. Part Two: When Will You Get the COVID-19 Vaccine? As of the day of this episode’s recording, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is slowly rolling out across the union. Not everyone will be able to get it right off the bat. Jack and Mike are waiting to get inoculated until the vaccine is widely available, while Kate will only get it if she absolutely has to. While on the subject, Jack wonders if corporations will mandate that people get vaccinated before they can return to the workplace. Kate mentions all of the food she left behind in her office prior to the COVID lockdowns. Mike speculates the office vermin have already gone to town with the leftovers. Part Three: Disney Announces a Ton of Star Wars and Marvel Entries You know those monoliths that randomly appeared around the union and in Europe? Citing a friend’s Facebook post, Jack wonders if this is all just an elaborate viral marketing campaign for the next Cloverfield movie. Kate reminds the room that The Cloverfield Paradox, in fact, exists. Meanwhile, Jack awoke the previous day to Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which serves as the de facto first season of Saved by the Bell. Kate mentions that Saved by the Bell is playing in marathons on multiple channels. The group briefly discuss shows they awake to when the TV is left on overnight. Elsewhere, Jack, Kate and Mike discuss all of the shows and movies announced at Disney’s investor’s call. A casual fan, Jack expects to go into each new Star Wars show without knowing any context or backstory. Meanwhile, Kate doesn’t care nor see the need to have so many Star Wars and Marvel shows. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hardlyfocused/support

The tight, well produced sound of Play Deep would make you think that this is the third or fourth album from The Outfield, but this was their debut studio album, and it went triple platinum in the United States. Percussionist Alan Jackman, guitarist/keyboardist (and songwriter) John Spinks, and bassist/lead vocalist Tony Lewis had worked together since the late 70's, and were in a band called The Baseball Boys when Columbia Records signed them in 1984. Their manager suggested that the name was a little too "tacky," and this prompted the shift to The Outfield. The band was signed largely on their being an “American sounding” group in England. This would lead to a successful US debut. Unfortunately, they would suffer for that in their home country, and The Outfield would never have a hit album in the UK. Some refer to their sound as power pop, or pop rock. The Outfield would have been heard more on pop stations than on rock stations in the 80's. There's a little new wave mixed in, and it is very well produced.John Spinks passed away in 2014 of liver cancer, and unfortunately Tony Lewis passed away a few weeks before the release of this podcast. So in a way, this is a tribute to a great “All American Sounding” band. RIP boys. I Don't Need HerThis deeper cut reminds us of Big Country or U2, with rich harmonies and a distinctive echo. "I'm so glad that I don't need her and I'm too tired of trying to please her, but in the end I just can't leave her. Can't leave her tonight."61 SecondsYou will definitely notice the mid-80's sound of this upbeat track. It is a song for the nameless worker in a large business. "61 seconds is all it takes for the 9-to 5-man to be more than one minute late." It's so hard to think of work as 9-to-5 anymore. All the LoveThis track was one of the singles from the album. It went to number 14 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. Most of the songs on this album have a similar sound, with high harmonies, prominent echo, and well-produced effects overall.Your LoveIt is amazing how big this song became. This track made it to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and is a completely fictional story about “Josie.” It took the group about 20 minutes to write the song - apparently inspired by The Who - and the band was shocked with how well it did. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Pretty in Pink” by The Psychedelic Furs The "Brat Pack" were prominent in this John Hughes film. The soundtrack to "Pretty in Pink" is a who's-who of mid-80's new wave bands. STAFF PICKS:Rock Me Amadeus by FalcoWayne leads off with Austrian musician Falco's song with the distinction of being the only German language song to hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was inspired by the Oscar award-winning movie "Amadeus."Life in a Northern Town by the Dream AcademyBruce's staff pick is the biggest hit for The Dream Academy, and features some unusual instruments for the rock genre, including tympani and oboe. It is an elegy to Nick Drake who died in 1971, and parts of the song were composed on Drake's guitar.Kyrie by Mr. MisterBrian's pick was inspired by a portion of the Catholic/Orthodox mass by way of the Episcopal church. Kyrie Eleison means "Lord have mercy." This track was a follow up to Mr. Mister's hit "Broken Wings." Manic Monday by The BanglesRob's staff pick was actually written by Prince. He originally intended it for Apollonia 6, but would be a hit for The Bangles. It reflects the travails of a working woman going to the office every week.COMEDY TRACK:The Super Bowl Shuffle by The Chicago Bears "Shuffling Crew"The Chicago Bears put out a rap video in the midst of their quest for a Super Bowl win. They would indeed win the Super Bowl, and this song peaked at number 41 in February 1986.

Episode 037 - Do You Have a Board of Directors? Running a business is not for the faint of heart. Agents run businesses every day, so it pays to learn to do it properly. Successful companies have a designated group of individuals that offer suggestions and feedback to help the company grow and prosper. Agents should do it, too! A Board of Directors is crucial to helping your real estate business become legendary. In this episode, we talk about why, how, and what to put together to form your own personal Board of Directors. Agents, it's time to run your business like a business. Let’s get real and knock this out! SHOW NOTES 00:35 – We are pushing it today…how many agents can we improve? We shoot for 4…here goes everything! 01:55 – Episode 37, Do you have a board of directors? Whether or not you are running an intentional business, it needs your attention and help. 02:50 – Introducing our new “Song of Episode Jingle.” Longer than the segment. Is B cheap??? 03:40 – Song of the episode: Dream Academy, “Life in a Northern Town”. 06:50 – What is a board of directors and what do they do? “Two heads are better than one.” Takes more than just yourself to be successful. 08:10 – Cate: This is not a BNI group with the intent to network or share referrals. 08:58 – Who needs to be on this board? People you can trust and be honest with you…brutally so if needed. 09:34 – Cate: friends are great and can be supportive, but likely not what you need in a board member. 10:08 – Producer Christian: have people that will challenge you; helping you look at long, horizon events or maybe a specific issue. 10:50 – B has a quick side note tangent: B does not have the ‘rona. 11:25 – Other people on the board: highly educated people; they have a lot of background and education that might help. 12:05 – Another agent can be on your board but be careful with who you share information with. Cate: might be an experienced agent and not a competitor. Can have an expertise that you do not have: residential, commercial, property management, etc. 12:48 – Other real estate professionals such as title people, appraisers, inspector, mortgage rep that can bring a different side of the real estate business into perspective. 13:06 – Directors can be from any type of business…even windshield wiper replacer businesses. Butcher, insurance rep. 14:03 – Cate: people that you fully trust. Even if they do not specialize in real estate sales. Cate has a mortgage person that guides her with her business. 15:00 – There is not an ideal number but 4 to 6 is probably best. Too many can muddy the conversation, and too few won’t give enough insight. 15:32 – Cate’s side note tangent: Oxford comma. Cate changes everything else in B’s life. 17:33 – What are you talking about in this meeting? Past, present, and future of your business. 18:54 – Cate: talk about your daily activities. How you are structuring your day. 19:00 – Paint a picture so your board knows what you have to work with to get you to where you want to go. 19:23 – Get their opinion on your business. You don’t have to follow through with their suggestions. 20:14 – Cate: set goals for each meeting; talk through each specific item. 20:25 – How often should you meet? Most likely once a month; spend a day together and make it a round robin where you each help each other. Each member of the board gets an hour to “speak” about themselves and what they want to accomplish. 21:26 – Cate: everyone will gain something from everybody’s conversation and play off of each other. 21:58 – Cate: everyone can chip in to have an accountant come in to give advice. 22:14 – Cate: have this in a location that does not have distractions. Turn your phone off, restaurants can be bad because of the noise and TVs. Maybe a conference room. Have lunch brought in. 22:54 – You might need an emergency meeting. A blanket email might be needed or a Zoom meeting. 23:55 – Cate: OINII; take your notes and prepare before and after. 24:20 – In your meetings, make sure you are setting goals for the next meeting. 24:50 – B is so inspirational; Quote of the Episode: “One of the first questions I ask agents is, “What is the purpose of your business?” Their answer tells me volumes.” -B. Be intentional with your business. 25:56 – Closing: get a board of directors that you trust and can help guide you. Meet regularly and be accountable to them.
