What the Riff!?! delves once again into the great (and not so great) Christmas songs to add a little cheer as you rock around the Christmas tree this year.“Carol of the Bells” by Mannheim SteamrollerMannheim Steamroller covers a Ukrainian carol from 1922. They highlight a 3 against 2 polyrhythm that is present in the original song, and add a major key change that is not present in the original. This is off their second Christmas album released in 1988 entitled "A Fresh Aire Christmas." “O Come O Come Emanuel” by Bad ReligionThis fast-paced rendition takes an 8th century song and puts a punk twist to it. It is a quick song, like most bad Religion tracks. “Yellin' at the Xmas Tree” by Billy IdolRocker Billy Idol reminisces about times with his drunk father yelling at the Christmas tree. "Oh the Christmas bells are ringing and the carolers are singing, but Daddy, he don't hear 'em, he's yellin' at the Christmas tree."“Space Christmas” by Shonen KnifeThis Japanese punk-pop band was inspired by the girl groups of the 60's and the Ramones. This sci-fi Christmas track has a "bubblegum pop" sound with a punk edge. “Taking Care of Christmas” by Bachman Turner OverdriveWhen Rob covered "Bachman Turner Overdrive II" earlier this year we discovered this Christmas remake of their classic single. It is surprisingly catchy for a song overhauled for Christmas. Randy Bachman did an all-Christmas album in 2008 including this song.“Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersThis original song was penned by Tom Petty on a ukulele in 1992. It was used in the motion picture "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," and also appeared in "Jingle All the Way." Jeff Lynne co-produced the song, played bells, bass, timpani, sang background vocals, and wishes for a Chuck Berry Songbook in the song.“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by the REO SpeedwagonREO Speedwagon keeps the original feel of the carol in their rendition of this classic. It was released on their 2009 album, "Not So Silent Night...Christmas with REO Speedwagon." The original English carol dates back to the 1650's. “Santa Claus” by The SonicsThis song with a fuzzy guitar appeared on the debut album from The Sonics back in 1965. The Sonics were a garage band out of Tacoma, Washington in the 60's, and influenced the punk and grunge movement. They are likely best known for their party song, "Louie, Louie."“Santa's Messin' with the Kid” by Eddie C. CampbellBlues guitarist and singer Eddie C. Campbell was well known in the Chicago blues scene and learned guitar from Muddy Waters. This song was released on his 1977 Christmas album.“What Christmas Means to Me” by Stevie WonderThis original song was released on Tamla records in 1967 on Wonder's eighth studio album entitled "Someday at Christmas." It was the final track on the album which consisted of a mix of Christmas standards and original music. “Merry Christmas Darling” by the CarpentersNo Christmas playlist would be complete without Karen Carpenter's voice. This song was originally recorded by The Carpenters in 1970. The lyrics date back to 1946 when songwriter Frank Pooler wrote it about a love interest at the time. He had The Carpenters perform it when they were his music students at California State University, Long Beach.“White Christmas” by Bing CrosbyBing Crosby originally performed this song composed by Irving Berlin in 1940. It was performed for the first time in December 1941, and appeared in the motion picture "Holiday Inn" in 1942. (and there might be a bonus song...)We at What the Riff?!? wish every one a blessed and Merry Christmas!

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. This Christmas season is a wonderful time that we get to spend with friends, family, and other loved ones. It's a great time to laugh and spend time together. One of the best things we can do during this holiday season is serve those around us. Whether we serve strangers, family members, or friends, everyone can benefit from a little extra love. On today's episode, enjoy the following: "Doin' the Dishes" by Catharine Conant from Timp 2017 (1:23) "The Children's Christmas Play" by Donald Davis from Christmas at Grandma's (13:25) "A Glass Christmas" by Andy Offutt Irwin from A Not So Silent Night (31:47)
Get ready for our second episode of Mary's story: Mary's Not-So-Silent Night.Have you ever felt like life threw you a curveball and it was really unfair? Maybe it was someone's fault or maybe it wasn't. Maybe you had all your holiday plans figured out—you dotted every "i,” and crossed every "t.” And then, just when you least expected it, something came along—an illness, a variant, a new policy—and changed it all. Situations like these that are outside of our control have become all too familiar lately. And they can be frustrating. When we pick up the story of Mary in Luke chapter 2, she is in the middle of one such disruptive moment in her life. And she's nine months pregnant. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.- Luke 2:6-7 NLTThis is the story that is at the center of countless movies, TV specials, and front lawn nativity scenes: the story of the birth of Jesus, but this time, from his mom's perspective.Whether you're about to celebrate Christmas or it's the middle of August, take some time to slow down, listen, and learn from Mary how to value the little moments that get you through the hard, frustrating, and not-in-your-control curveballs of life.Writing by Alexis ColvinNarration and editing by Amy QueryAdditional voice acting by Darryl Howell and Gabe LacayoProduction by Mike Query
On, December 8, 2020, Dr. Varner shared with us about his newest 2020 publication - "Anticipating the Advent: Looking for Messiah in All the Right Places" (Nov. 1, 2020; Fontes Press), which can be found here for anyone who may be interested, but also his testimony and journey into how he became involved in Messianic studied and ministry. The forward of Dr. Varner's new publication is written by Dr. Michael Rydelnik of Moody Bible Institute and is considered a part-two volume that builds upon an earlier book called “Passionate about the Passion Week: A Fresh Look at Jesus' Last Days” also published earlier in 2020 (March 1, 2020; Fontes Press), and can be found here. Description Most Christmas books focus on the light and joy of the season. Anticipating the Advent, however, portrays the dark side of Christmas because only then will the Light shine the brightest. On the night when the host of heaven sang “Glory to God in the highest,” they were arrayed to do battle with the evil forces who wanted to kill the promised child. This seed of Eve was coming to crush the enemy's head (Gen 3:15) and destroy the Devil's power (Heb 2:14). Old Simeon would tell the young mother Mary that, because her son would be the Messiah, a sword would pierce through her soul (Luke 2:35). In so many ways, it was a “Not So Silent Night.” About the Author William Varner teaches Bible exposition and Greek exegesis at The Master's University. He has led more than fifty trips throughout Israel and has written more than a dozen books, some for laymen and some for scholars, including Passionate about the Passion Week: A Fresh Look at Jesus' Last Days (Fontes, 2020). We had the pleasure of interviewing ENZI over Zoom video! Colorado native and alternative-pop artist ENZI has released her new single “Time Flies” – available via all DSPs. Produced and co-written by frequent collaborators Bobby Campbell and Jeff Cohen (Macy Gray, Sugarland, The Band Perry), the song was also mastered by Nathan Dantzler (Niall Horan, Vince Gill, Lady A). “Time Flies” showcases ENZI's strength in creating powerful and catchy choruses while also perfectly encapsulating the feelings of anger and hopelessness all felt during the past year's lockdown. “Time Flies” is one of the most personal tracks I've written to date. In the last year, I struggled so much to find any motivation to just get out of bed. The crumbling world felt like it was crumbling all on top of me and it was completely paralyzing, emotionally and physically. After finally opening up to some others, I realized I was not alone. I wanted to write a song that encapsulated this feeling of total isolation, overwhelming apathy, and complete mental paralysis. I know they say “time flies when you're having fun!” But time also flies when you're mentally withdrawn. - ENZI “Time Flies” comes on the heels of ENZI's hometown live performance last weekend – her first since the pandemic – where she previewed the track to fans at Lost Lake Lounge in Denver alongside previous singles “Retrograde” and “Mad Chemistry.” Both tracks were met with critical acclaim from Refinery29, UPROXX, American Songwriter, BlackBook, Colorado Public Radio, Alternative Press, Westword, and more upon their release. Originally from Northern Colorado, ENZI recently moved to Nashville to pursue her studies in songwriting/music major at Belmont University. She released her debut single “Flipside” in 2018 and has since scored multiple syncs across MTV's original programming as well as support from iHeartRadio. She was awarded a top-five spot at KTCL 93.3's Big Gig in Colorado and she was also tapped to open the station's Not So Silent Night concert in 2019. With only a handful of singles to her name, ENZI has already shared stages with The Head and The Heart, Fitz and the Tantrums, Walk the Moon, and more – all before her junior year of college. Rufus Wainwright is an American-Canadian singer, songwriter, and composer. He has created two classical operas, Prima Donna and Hadrian. He also has ten studio albums and has contributed to many film soundtracks. He's been nominated this year for a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Every week he also hosts a Rufus-Retro-Wainwright-Spective, where he plays music from his past studio albums. Nick used to manage Rufus back in his very early career and has gotten to know his family throughout the years. Madonna also believes Rufus stole Nick from her. Nick and Rufus discuss his opera work, what it's like to make a pop album, and how family life has changed Rufus for the better. Key Takeaways [2:15] Rufus has been working on Unfollow the Rules for the last three years, but it is a compilation of about 10 years' worth of songwriting. [3:15] COVID-19 really threw a monkey wrench in a lot of people's plans. [4:50] Rufus discusses his two Grammy nominations for Traditional Pop Vocal Album. [7:30] Rufus shares the mental space he has to be in to go from writing an opera to writing a pop song. [10:00] Rufus's definition of pop is quite different than the “standard” pop definition. [10:55] What kind of music did Rufus grow up on? [12:10] Rufus and his sisters are doing a “Not So Silent Night” family Christmas show. It's really needed in times like these. [15:15] The classical music press really tries to pick your work apart. [17:10] Hadrian was a much bigger production compared to Rufus's first opera, Prima Donna. [18:35] How does Rufus make an opera come to life? [20:55] What's next for Rufus now that he has a bit of downtime at home? [22:30] Rufus is open to doing more films but feels like you really have to have gusto and an immunity to rejection if you want to make it in film. [25:35] If you're new in your career, it's important to really listen and take in all that's around you. [29:00] Rufus knows people were worried about him while he was abusing drugs and alcohol, but he was just searching for answers. [32:05] Rufus is very grateful for Nick fighting for him and pushing for his work to be more mainstream. [33:15] How has having a family changed Rufus's perception of the world? [35:55] What is Rufus currently listening to? Thanks for listening! Tune in next week and don't forget to take a minute to review the podcast. A Not So Silent Night
Today is the Solstice. If you are reading/listening to this show after Solstice, WE MADE IT!! It's actually the beginning of so many things. The old age is over and the new age has begun. For this, the last episode of the calendar year and also the episode that closes 6 years of Wigglian podcasting, we have a special guest. We were lucky enough to get a recording of a lecture that Ronald Hutton gave in September in London, England. Sparrow was supposed to be at that lecture but was unable to make it. Our good friend, Dennis, was kind enough to record it and send it to us. We hope you enjoy and learn a little about Pagan History. We are not featuring an album on this episode but have 5 seasonal tunes for your enjoyment. Our first song is by Damh the Bard and is called The Winter King, from the Spirit of Albion. Next we hear Light of the World by Sharon Knight and T. Thorn Coyle from the album Songs for a Waning Year. We borrowed from mainstream music for the next three songs and they are Merry Christmas Baby (by Charles Brown, from the Blues at Christmas 1 cd), Little Drummer Boy (Bob Seger, Ultimate Hits), and finally Winter Wonderland (REO Speedwagon, Not So Silent Night). Blessed Yule everybody. Stay safe and warm and don't drink and drive. Thanks for Walking the Wigglian Way!
