His work has focused on human rights and empathy as a tool to overcome confrontation and conflict in the world.DW currently is creating a series of biographical novels and screenplays about social justice issues. One of his books, Racism Awareness, scheduled to be released in March of 2023, addresses root causes of racism and presents effective ways to identify and eradicate it.Another, ”Not Without a Fight,” is a biographical novel based on the true story of a Jewish boy who becomes a Resistance Fighter in World War II in Poland. The book's message is we shouldn't be erasing history, we should be learning from it. Is that why you wrote “Racism Awareness?” Talk to us about that.Mark: There is a rise in anti-Semitic activities and attitudes in America today. Jew hatred is on the rise. Do you see many parallels between what's going on in America today and the rise of Nazism in Germany in the 1930s?Bob – You have said that empathy is a tool in overcoming stereotypes and discrimination. I would agree with that, but it sounds rather simplistic. Can you elaborate for us? Cas Bieberstein stood ready to die, but not without a fight. Forced out of his home and into the Warsaw ghettos at the start of World War II, Cas Bieberstein became a resistance fighter by the age of 10. What is particularly striking is the mindset he developed in the raw world. He expected that he would die, but not without a fight. He worked building weapons and explosives for the enemy, but intentionally made most of them inoperable. He worked as a sharpshooter, was sent to concentration camps and managed to escape to the U.S. He lived his life quietly for many years, only opening up to tell of his past in his most senior years. The story came to light when two distant cousins realized their genealogical connection and began to talk. The story is documented in their book "Not Without a Fight" and an award winning documentary short. The scripture text is Genesis 32:22-31. This week we encounter a God who looks different than the one to which we are probably accustomed.  This God starts a fight with Jacob, for seemingly no reason. This God breaks Jacob's hip when it appears God cannot prevail. What kind of God does this and why? I want to suggest that this is the same loving God we worship but whose ways are beyond our understanding. Also, I invite you to ponder this: Although our God is Sovereign and mighty, this is not the case when it comes to prevailing against our free will. Sometimes, God has to allow a breaking for our blessing. Sometimes, we must be broken, before we will surrender to God's will for our lives... God's best for our lives. Jacob went from the trickster to Israel, from not knowing God to have seen God face to face, and from being a man on the run for his life to the father of a nation, by whom many would be blessed. In one day, your whole world could crumble and everything you treasure could be lost. That is exactly what happened to Anna Seewald in Armenia, where an earthquake resulted in overwhelming tragedy. Although she struggled through adversity, she found healing through community bonds. Her philosophy: together, we could overcome anything. The Other Side of Adversity Anna, growing up in Armenia, lived a peaceful and fulfilling childhood until her home town was hit with a catastrophic earthquake. The tragedy resulted in the loss of her mother, younger cousin, and many more friends and relatives.  Anna had to move with other relatives in a foreign country, however, the experience allowed her to grow more resilient and empowering as she lives her life now in America. Overcoming her struggles, Anna became a parent counselor where she guides parents who’ve also been through trauma and abuse. She sees herself in them as they are on the same side of adversity.  Anna did work with children at the beginning of her career. She believes that focusing on the parents and how they raise their children will result in a better home for both the parents and children.  Anna credits her strength and resilience to the community she was in, relationships she bonded through, and the love she received as well as gave. She believes she is where she is at because of the unspoken bond of empathy.  After the earthquake, and to this day, Anna processes her pain through the art of music, poetry, and writing. Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie serves as the 117th elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.  Her historic election in the year 2000 represents the first time in the over 213-year history of the A.M.E. Church, a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office.   The firsts continued, as she is the first woman to serve as President of the Council of Bishops; Chair, General Conference Commission; host bishop to the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the President of the General Board of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.  Currently, she is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, which encompasses the great state of Texas. She previously served as the presiding bishop of the Thirteenth Episcopal District, Tennessee and Kentucky and the Eighteenth Episcopal District in Southern Africa. In each district she initiated innovative ministry from building three group homes for children orphaned by AIDS in Swaziland to establishing Believe, Inc.,  a faith-based non-profit to help resource local congregations and provide theological scholarships.   Bishop McKenzie was appointed to serve on the Advisory Council of the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships by President Barack Obama in 2009. She is a member of the Board of Trustee of Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas and is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Interdenominational Center in Atlanta, Georgia   Bishop McKenzie is the National Chaplain for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. the largest predominantly African American sorority of college-trained women. She has served for more than 30 years as the spiritual guide for over 250,000 women. She was recently appointed the National Chaplain for The Links, Inc. another exceptional organization of powerful and upwardly mobile women.   She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, earned a Master of Divinity from Howard University, School of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary. She has also been honored at the top of the list of Great African American Female Preachers on the Honor Roll of Great African American Preachers and by Ebony Magazine.   Bishop McKenzie is the author of six books.  The first two books, Not Without a Struggle and Strength in the Struggle address leadership and professional growth for women. She revised Not Without A Struggle in 2012, as it remains a staple at seminaries and schools of religion.  Journey to the Well helps women seek new directions for personal growth and transformation following the footsteps of the Biblical Samaritan woman.  Swapping Housewives tells the stories of Rachel, Jacob and Leah and shares the 21st century implications for married and unmarried love. Those Sisters Can Preach is an edited anthology of sermons from twenty-two outstanding preachers.  Her latest work, The Big Deal of Taking Small Steps to Move Closer to God, shows how to develop a stronger relationship with God and more effective spiritual lifestyle by taking small steps that lead to big changes Bishop McKenzie, described, as an “electrifying preacher” is a much sought after workshop and seminar presenter on women, transformation and leadership. She has a global preaching ministry and has preached extensively in the United States including the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C.; the Congressional Black Caucus Prayer Breakfast, The Hampton Minister’s Conference, Bishop T.D. Jakes’ Pastor’s and Leaders Conference, Harvard School of Divinity and Princeton School of Divinity just to name a few.   She is founder and CEO of Kerygma, LLC, a literary content provider. She produced a television documentary after the devastation of hurricane Katrina entitled Survivor Stories, which aired on cable and PBS Stations. She also produced the documentary Echoes From the General Conference in 2012. She edits and publishes annually The Anvil, a resource guide of the Council of Bishops of the AME Church and is currently working on The Spirit of African Methodism.   Bishop McKenzie is the wife of former NBA player, Dr. Stan McKenzie. Caregivers have a lot on their plates, but some caregivers, whether through notoriety or sheer desire, find they still have the opportunity to help others going through the same struggles they faced. In 2005, Lee Woodruff became a caregiver for her husband, Bob, an ABC news anchor and reporter wounded in Iraq. The couple went on to create the Bob Woodruff Foundation, designed to help veterans and their caregivers. Creating a large, national nonprofit isn't the only way to help others though. Telling your story so that others might feel less alone in their struggle is another way to help, so that's just what TBI Champion Jasmin Blair chose to do. Our hope and the promise of Scripture is that the Holy Spirit would help us to navigate this world in a way that is wise, truthful, and loving. Whether the issue is same-sex marriage or any other sin, Jesus promised that the He would send the Holy Spirit to convict the world concerning sin, righteousness, and judgement and the work of the Spirit is best displayed through His saints. Pastor Leonce explains what Jesus meant regarding each way the world would be convicted, and gives us three ways to respond to the truth of Jesus' words. It doesn't matter how far the dominant culture seems to move away from God, because of the Spirit's active role, nothing can upend the will of God.
