I had the best time getting to know the wonderful Gabriela Quintero of Grammy-winning psychedelic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela for this episode of the LSQ podcast. We recently met over Zoom for a conversation exploring important moments in her personal creative evolution — things like seeing an all-girl Japanese metal band when she was 10; or discovering Metallica thanks to the mixtape her sister's boyfriend had made, as part of his romance strategy; meeting her bandmate Rodrigo Sánchez at a local culture house where they grew up in Mexico City; how their friendship and mutual love for playing guitar led them to playing together, eventually moving to Zihuatanejo and starting the band; their adventures busking in Ireland at the end of the 90s, and how that helped kickstart their career; and lots of other stuff, including their awesome latest album, In Between Thoughts… A New World. Rodrigo y Gabriela are on tour right now; get tickets here.
Guitarist Gabriela Quintero joins Carmel Holt to discuss the latest Rodrigo y Gabriela album, In Between Thoughts... A New World, their sixth studio release and first since their 2019 Grammy-winning album Mettavolution. Gabriela takes us back to her earliest days of teaching herself to play guitar, discovering her love of rock and metal bands, and the chance meeting at fifteen with Rodrigo Sanchez that would eventually lead to forming their metal-influenced acoustic duo, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and traveling around the world to playing some of the biggest stages.

Originally from Mexico City Rodrigo y Gabriela, the acoustic guitar duo of Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero, met as teenagers while playing in a thrash metal band called Tierra Acida. By 2000 the formally became a duo act and moved to Dublin Ireland, where with the support of musician Damian Rice, the talented pair participated in the renowned Oxegen music festival in Ireland, where they attracted significant attention. From the beginning, their reputation as killer musicians - Rodrigo with the faster-than-lightning lead guitar and Gabriela with her unique, rhythmic, strumming-and-drumming style - started to spread across the country. The high-energy international duo's music harnesses the flash, power, and speed of death metal filtered through the passion, soul, technique, and discipline of nuevo flamenco. Their showy, emotional sound is marked by Quintero's syncopated, hooky, percussive rhythms and rapid-fire strummed vamps framing Sanchez's incendiary, melodic, single-and dual-string leads. Following a successful live album in 2004, their debut self-titled studio album, produced by John Leckie of Radiohead and Stone Roses fame, was released by Rubyworks in February 2006 and charted at Number One on the Irish national charts, keeping the Arctic Monkeys off the top spot. Having established themselves in their adopted home, the duo started to spread their magic across the rest of the world. They headlined the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury in 2007, which was broadcast live on BBC TV. The Rodrigo y Gabriela album went on to sell over 100,000 records in the UK. This episode features recordings from the acclaimed duo's 2019 performance at Big Top Chautauqua. For more than two decades, trailblazing acoustic guitarists Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero have been blending metal, flamenco, pop, and jazz with their Grammy-winning duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, and they're not showing any sign of slowing down. They're currently on the road in support of their seventh full-length album, In Between Thoughts…A New World, released in April. Every once in a while, there comes an album that Peter can find no fault in, and that Dre has to search really hard to find fault in. This time, it happens to be a monumental instrumental effort by a Mexican pair who found their path in Ireland. Guitar virtuosos Rodrigo y Gabriela have deemed Kamasi Washington “one of the most exciting jazz musicians out there,” so they’ve recreated the LA jazz maestro’s “Street Fighter Mas” with just two guitars. It may sound stripped down, but we don’t lose any of the song’s intricacies.

In part two of the series with Rodrigo y Gabriela, the tables are turned as Rod y Gab interview Alex. They dig into Alex’s musical history, beginning with early influences like The Beatles and KISS, and his immersion into the Bay Area metal scene that ultimately led him to Testament. The trio discuss thrash vs glam metal, the Al Dimeola-inspired acoustic track on the 1990 album Souls of Black, what success looks like for a musician, and why it’s important to super-serve your most ardent fans. Alex explains the story behind his album Planetary Coalition, which features Rodrigo y Gabriela, and why sometimes becoming a great player happens by accident. In the episode, you’ll hear the trio perform the Dave Brubeck song “Take Five” and “Playa La Ropa” from Planetary Coalition. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“Music is mystical. At the beginning, you don’t even know why. You just feel. Then you hit a point when you forget that feeling and you have to meet it again.“Rodrigo SánchezIt’s one thing to be an artist. But to become a successful creative — revered for your art — is quite another thing altogether.Even more rare are the few who deftly navigate the vicissitudes of an acclaimed artistic career (or any career for that matter), with a highly conscious, devotional approach.Musicians Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero – popularly known as the Mexican acoustic rock guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela — are not only incredible masters of their craft, they fully embody this ethos. It's a sensibility that has carried them from obscurity in Mexico. To busking on Grafton Street in Dublin. And ultimately to playing premier sold out venues all across the globe.Along the way, Rod & Gab have performed at the White House for the Obamas. They've collaborated on film scores with world renowned composers like Hans Zimmer. And lent their talents to television shows like Breaking Bad — all while staying true to themselves and their utterly unique Metallica meets Flamenco artistic sensibility. For those unfamiliar with this dynamic duo, prepare to be amazed.I had the good fortune to witness them perform live at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles the night before this conversation. Unlike anything I had previously seen or heard, it was a transcendent experience that defies attempts to adequately describe.Fortunately, I don't have to. Today, in addition to the quality conversations you've come to expect with this show, we expand the format to weave a mini-concert into the experience — a rare treat certain to delight.Beyond the acoustic wall of sound, this is a conversation about a creative spark that began with heavy metal roots in Mexico City. It's about how busking on the streets of Dublin led to a huge break. And the extraordinary career that followed. We discuss the influences and evolution of Rod and Gab's unique style. The importance of mastery in their musicianship and personal lives. And we explore the role meditation, spirituality and veganism has played in their self and career development.Gab and Rod call it Mettavolution.Intercut with live performance, along the way they share amazing stories. What it was like playing Letterman. Performing for the Obamas. And working on big Hollywood films like Pirates of the Caribbean.Lastly, this is an episode you're going to want to watch on YouTube. It's one thing to hear Rod & Gab perform. But it's another thing altogether to observe their mastery in motion. To bear witness, visit bit.ly/rodrigoygabriela477I’m in love with these two. I'm super excited to share their unique gifts with you today. And I sincerely hope you enjoy this experimental twist on my typical format.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsNative: Safe, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

"Get set for another round of songs that are just becoming or are already classified as bona fide earworms here at grassroots radio on this episode, said WNCW Program Director Joe Kendrick. "Our feature DJ For A Day takes a bicycle trip to a little country store with the band Scythian, for the tale of how they were given a 19th century fiddle on the spot. Dan Fedoryka of Scythian tells a great story about how his brother Alex got this instrument, so stick around for that as well as our Segue Of the Show, which goes for a nautical theme with a new tune from Old Man Luedecke paired with an out of print record from 1992. We have Buddy & Julie Miller, Rodrigo Y Gabriela and a whole lot in between here on this edition of WNCW’s new music podcast On The Way Up."

As a young girl living in Mexico City, Gabriela Quintero dreamed of living by the beach, playing guitar and taking responsibility for herself. Many years, albums, concerts and collaborations have happened since then, and her band Rodrigo y Gabriela is one of the most highly regarded projects to emerge out of Mexico in the recent past. Her unique guitar technique has inspired guitarists around the world. But for Gabriela the biggest success is the fact that she lived by the beach and plays guitar. Here she tells the story, explains the power of fearlessness and the importance of community.

I can't think of a better way to describe the music of Rodrigo y Gabriela than with three words: "heavy metal flamenco." And yet the duo doesn't play heavy metal — its members perform instrumentals on nylon-string guitars — nor does it play Spanish dance music. But the term fits because the pair's fierce guitar riffs feel powerfully electric, and because Rodrigo y Gabriela's rhythmic style showcases a frenetic strum that conjures the energy of flamenco.

Episode #11 of the Live Music Podcast brings another unique style of music somewhat like the last episode. In this episode I am featuring a band called Rodrigo y Gabriela made up of Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero. This duo's musical style is something of a combination of mariachi and heavy metal, which might make them the only band on the planet to do so. All of their songs are strictly acoustic and instrumental, played on a pair of classical guitars. Amazingly they are able to play in such a way that you would swear that there is someone else playing percussion instruments with them. Regardless of how you describe their style I find Rodrigo y Gabriela's music very energetic and uplifting, the musical equivalent to a box of Red Bull.
