We crossed paths back in '94 or '95, both joining the company around the same time. We played a big role in launching and expanding projects stemming from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a massive hit among kids. Greg and I teamed up with higher-ups to handle creative and administrative aspects. My main focus was creating a positive work environment, addressing coworkers' concerns, and making the company a more mindful place. However, I eventually moved away from the business because I didn't want to keep pushing products to kids. I believed childhood and life had more to offer than disposable plastic toys. While I gained valuable experience, this aspect bothered me. Nonetheless, I learned about team building and fostering a supportive atmosphere within a corporate context. What Is Stir The Paint? Gregory Copploe: I host events called Stir The Paint Nights, which is my rebranding of what was formerly Paint Night Seattle. These gatherings bring people together to create art on canvas. Through these events, I've learned a lot about people's personalities and emotions as they express themselves on the canvas. As someone with heightened awareness, I can sense their self-criticism, high expectations, and even anxiety. Sometimes I ask participants why they're anxious, and often they can't pinpoint the source. They just want to excel at the activity. I remind them that they're already good at it and that talent can develop over time. We don't need to start out as experts; we can nurture our abilities. These insights from Stir The Paint Nights actually influenced my book. I took the struggles and personal growth I observed and incorporated them into the journey of the protagonist in my writing. The Process of Writing I Am Pink Dani Forrest: When talking about writing “I am Pink,” I was asked if any sections I strongly felt about ended up being left out of the final book. At first, Greg sent me a draft while I was in Kauai, which is a special place for me, full of inspiration. The story's core was there, and I loved it. Yet, there were parts about mindfulness practices and nutrition that I worried might divert from the main message. I wanted the heart of the story to shine, so we left out detailed explanations to keep the focus on the characters' relationships. How To Take On Brokenness? Gregory Copploe: When I asked myself about taking on that brokenness, I realized it's actually quite beautiful. We all have our flaws, and embracing them can be a beautiful thing. It's about putting those broken pieces together to create healing. Running these events, I often sense that healing happening. When we finish, there's a change in the atmosphere, an energy shift. This change is something Justin, the protagonist, also feels. He's connecting with experiences that finally feel genuine and true to him. It's like he's encountering love, a connection with animals, and a bond with nature for the very first time. In today's episode, Dr. Manoj Krishna and I talk about how wisdom, examining one's inner thoughts and feelings, will help us address stress, anxiety, relationship issues, addiction, and climate change. Curiosity is a key concept that could unlock our ability to connect with others and find a sense of inner peace. Bio: Manoj Krishna trained as a doctor in India before coming to the UK to pursue a career as a spine surgeon. He left that career after 25 years to write the book, Understanding Me, Understanding You- an enquiry into being human, and launch the Human Wisdom Project, which aims to help people access their own wisdom which comes from self-knowledge. This can be life-changing and make the world a better place. His new book Stress Free, was published in May 2022. The HumanWisdom App for adults launched in July 2022. He believes that understanding ourselves and how our minds work awakens our inner intelligence, which leads to wisdom, and can lead to transformation. This understanding can prevent and solve many problems which begin in our thinking: stress, anxiety, relationships breakdown, violence, addiction and climate change. It leads to the realisation that deep down, we are the same human being because our minds function in similar ways. This results in compassion, goodness and a sense of peace. By understanding ourselves, we can understand others better, leading to fulfilling relationships. Rather than just deal with the symptoms of stress, this approach uncovers the root of it in our thinking, and can end it completely. He thinks if we could scale this wisdom to the world, we could create a better future for humanity. He works in education to bring this wisdom to children, who are the future of humanity. Our current education system only educates you about the world around us and can make you a successful doctor or bus driver, but to be an excellent human being you need a different kind of intelligence, which comes from this understanding of how our minds work. Welcome to The Conscious Couples Podcast with your hosts and real-life couple Emilia Smith and Alan Lazaros. Today they talk about a not uncommon scenario in a relationship: when you or your partner tune each other out. Successful relationships are all about healthy communication and listening to each other. However, it's not uncommon for couples to experience periods when talking to each other becomes a challenge and listening is absent. As you think about the possible causes of this ignoring behavior, be sure to consider how well you are listening and holding space for your partner as well – it's easy to blame one partner, but often, faulty communication is a two-way street.Relationship Talks #19: "Understanding You & Your Partner's Attachment Styles" - https://bit.ly/3PjC2y0Show notes:[1:34] Episode intention[2:37] The law of familiarity[8:25] Tuning out as a stress response[11:55] Jessica and Michael shares their experience with Emilia and Alan and Relationship Talk[14:49] Calling out your partner when they tune you out[23:04] OutroLearn more about The Conscious Couples: www.theweuniversity.comFollow us on Instagram:Emilia Smith @evolvewithemiliaAlan Lazaros @alazaros88Book a FREE Relationship Talk: https://calendly.com/alanlazaros/book-your-relationship-talk-with-emilia-and-alanThanks for joining us for another episode of The Conscious Couples Podcast; we love connecting with the Conscious Couples community, so please make sure you follow us on Instagram. Thomas Campbell answers the question, “What Is Consciousness”. He is a physicist, lecturer, and author of the My Big TOE (Theory of Everything) trilogy. In the books, he discusses the origins of consciousness and brings together science and philosophy, physics and metaphysics, mind and matter, purpose and meaning, as well as the normal and the paranormal. The writings are based on the simulation argument, which takes the position that reality is both virtual and subjective. He is here to answer the question,”What Is Consciousness?”. You know, when I was meditating, I didn't use the breathing type of meditation, I used the mantra type. But I don't say mantras anymore and I don't need to; I can be in a meditation state in an instant. It's the same with the breathing breath, just like a mantra is used. Because it fills your mind with something that's non-operable. By non-operable, I mean, it's nothing that you're going to think about, oh, I'm breathing in, I'm breathing out, you know, that just happens automatically, you don't have to think about it. The mantra is a word that doesn't mean anything in particular, you know, it's a word that has kind of a resonant ending, has a little vibration to it. But other than that, any sound will do as well as any other sound. I know, sometimes people sell magic sounds, or meditation monitors and stuff, but any sound will do just as well. You use that sound of the mantra to replace thoughts that come into your head. So the mantra kind of fills up your mind space and crowds the thought out. The same with the breathing; when you take your deep breath, you're aware of being in a relaxed state, and you focus on being in touch with everything. Eventually, you don't need to be focused on your breath or anything else. You just live in that state all the time. So I don't do any kind of breathing exercises or anything. Thoughts About God Interestingly enough, I was at a Unitarian Church, giving a program there. That church was just the venue, they had a less expensive room to rent than anybody else. And there were two theologians there that went along with that church. They were there while I was giving my talk and I asked them, I said, you two both have PhDs in theology, tell me, what are the attributes of God? Now, I said, I don't want dogma, I just want the general, what are the attributes of God. And this was a Unity Church, so they're into a little less dogma in that organization. So they spent a little bit of time in a conference talking to each other for about a minute or so and they came up with this list of attributes of God. And the reason I asked is, I compared that list to the attributes of the larger consciousness system. And I thought, I wonder how they're going to compare. And as it turned out, there was a one for one. Everything they had on their list was also an attribute of the larger consciousness system. [They said] it's perfect, all-knowing, knows everything all the time. It's Supernatural. It's infinite. And well, my larger conscious system is not infinite. It's a natural system, not a supernatural system. Everything is a part of it. But it's not necessarily aware of everything all the time, it has to focus its attention on things. And it can be aware of a whole lot more than I can because it's got a lot bigger mind than I have. But it's also limited in that its number of bits is limited, it's finite. So it has to be efficient, in the way it does things. You can't just do things sloppily, if it's going to make a simulation, it's got to do that in an efficient way. It has constraints. It has a boundary, what's outside that boundary, have no idea. And we can't know because we're in it, we're conscious. We can't see an experience outside of what we are, you know? Yes, a lot of people are very religious, or at least they describe themselves as very religious. That also, like my Big TOE, they're not incompatible. I expected them to be incompatible because of my brush with religion had mostly been very dogmatic. But I found out that there are lots of people as individuals, they may belong to dogmatic religion, but they're not dogmatic at all. They've outgrown that. They don't have to go there, the details don't matter. Then they see the big picture. It's about being kind and caring about love. They have all the big picture stuff. And, you know, they're just not that interested in the details that aren't important to them. So in that sense, the larger consciousness system is the source of everything else. Advice for People Who Love to Study I was always very slow at almost everything, because I just rejected memorization. Memorizing how to get the right answers to me did not make sense. When I got to graduate school, I was a little envious of the guys that could write the right answer down in a few minutes, because I couldn't do that. After talking with them, I found out that they were envious of me because I could solve the problems that they couldn't [solve]. [For] the problems that they hadn't learned a methodology to get the right answer, they were stuck. Yeah. And I wasn't stuck. But I was very slow, and they weren't. They were very fast. So it had its advantages and disadvantages. It has to make sense, has to be derived from the bottom up, otherwise it's just not even worth doing it. I want to share the true aha moment that came to me this week. I've been beating myself up lately. When I say beating myself up, I mean those internal thoughts asking myself why. Why am I not being productive? I have all this time and all I want to do is sit around, sleep and do nothing. Why don't I have the energy and drive? Why I am shutting down? These feelings were becoming so heavy that it was affecting my mental health. I tried to fight the demons in my head by going for a walk, journaling and continuing my self-care. That helped a bit but I had to be honest with myself, I still felt like I was not myself. I was yearning for the good old days. Do you believe things happen for a reason? I do. Kinda like, you have to go through the hard shit to enjoy the good times and you have to go through the crazy seasons to enjoy the boring times. Last week, I attended a coaching session on the DISC - This is a personal assessment tool used to help you deepen your understanding of yourself and others. DISC stand for D dominance, I influence, S steadiness, C conscientiousness. The DISC training provided me with more self-awareness. Constructive change begins with self-knowledge. DiSC profiles show you how you respond to conflict, what motivates you or stresses you out, and how you solve problems. To understand more information about the disc, you can pretty much google this. And, to note, there are other assessments that can help you get a better understanding of yourself. During the DISC, training the instructor went through the basic behavioral styles and personality indicators. It was so eye opening for me. This presentation was just what I need knowing my situation. I learned that my challenges and situation right now are stressing my personality traits and behaviors. I love security, being organized and in control. I am very task orientated and an high achiever. I love my alone time since it fuel meMy coach hit it on the head and said when you lose control or fear security or can't have consistency. You go into reserved mode. I am outgoing usually but clam up. What about you? Think about your personality and behaviors. Your emotions, feeling and mental state may be suffering and you shouldn't be blaming yourself. My coach when on to tell me. Control what you can control right now. I can't control the schedule, my location and my spouse's condition. But I can control my self-care right now. When you better understand yourself, you can then dissect your situation, your emotions/feelings, your behaviors in this situation you are in and most importantly - how you can handle the situation. For me right now, I get Denis appointment times 24 hours before. So instead of intense planning out each day like I love to do - I am focusing on my top 3 priorities. (Self - care

That book is, Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul, by Stuart Brown. Stuart Brown is the founder of The National Institute for Play. In this episode, Mark shares the 6 step framework for Play: Anticipation - The first thing about play is the anticipation. You can't wait to go outside and play or start the game. This creates an eagerness to do it.Surprise - There is an element of surprise in play.Pleasure - Play is enjoyable.Understanding - You learn about yourself and others when you're playing.Strength - When you play you gain strength; mentally, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. You also improve your stamina and state of mind.Poise - You develop poise when you play. The more you play the better you relate to yourself and other players. You're also able to be coached better. The author encourages us to answer the following questions: When have you felt free to be and do what you choose? Is there a part of your life right now that play fits into. What do you feel stands in the way of your achieving more personal time for play? Are you able to feel what engages you the most effortlessly, because it's play? Feb 9, 2019 “The best thing about any higher education is learning how to learn.” Do you want to grow, develop, and improve throughout your life? I’m pretty sure you do, which is why you are reading this right now. I’m asking you today to commit now to a lifetime of learning. If you were one of those who hated school, please don’t think I just sentenced you to a lifetime of boredom. Learning is SO much different than most of what we experienced in school (unfortunately) and is SO much more interesting. So why is school so boring? There’s no simple explanation, but I think it has a lot to do with quantification of progress. That is, we need to know whether the students are learning, and the most objective way to assess this is to test rote memory. That makes it easy to compare the progress of children across a school district or a state but is a measure of only the lowest level of learning. Enter Bloom’s Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain (He also developed similar taxonomies for the Affective and Psycho-motor domains, but those are topics for a different day). Here’s a handy chart, courtesy of Jessica Shabatura and uark.com: Think of this like a layer cake. Everything up top rests on the lower levels. You need those in order to be able to experience the higher frosting-to-cake ratios at the upper level. (You know that cake is just a hand-held device that allows you to shove icing into your mouth, right?) The lowest level, “remember” is the easiest to test for and everything else is built on that. It is a simple recall of the facts. Memorizing anything means repetition and this can get tedious. This is where kids start tuning out. But if one does not master at least a good number of the facts, they will be lost when the teacher attempts to move to higher levels of learning. Don’t worry about school any more (unless you are IN school of course). Let’s just focus on getting to the higher levels. Let me give you a real estate example: Remember: You can recall all of the data points we collect when developing comparable sales, e.g. bedroom bathroom count, square footage, year built, distance from subject, and so on. Understanding: You know that if the houses fit most of the criteria but one has a half bath or some other minor difference it can still be counted, perhaps with an adjustment. Apply: You use this information to gather a list of potential properties as comps and arrive at a value for the subject. Analyze: Working with your ARV you just developed, you use another combination of knowledge, understanding, and application to develop a repair estimate. Then you plug into a formula to decide whether this property is one to pursue. Evaluate: Using criteria important to you (such as the Property Grade App), you can compare properties with each other to choose from a pool of qualified candidates based on your capacity, your financial position and other external factors. Create: Using all of these skills, you create systems to speed the analysis of multiple properties and scale your business. Note that not every process follows this hierarchy precisely because the types of problems we solve can vary significantly. It is also important to note that you cannot operate at the higher levels without some mastery of the lower levels. If you are struggling to understand something, go back to the previous level and honestly ask whether you have master it. You can’t evaluate or create without a solid understanding of the facts, which also means you have to know some facts. A general cannot devise a battle plan without some knowledge of the history of warfare strategy and tactics. A Congressperson may wish to provide a good life for all, but without any knowledge or sense of the 20th century, may propose policies of socialism that echo the policies of totalitarian regimes that led to two world wars and the loss of more than 100 million lives. Ok, that’s this week’s political pot-shot. Moving on. So you really do want to learn. And you want to get beyond mere knowledge to the higher levels of thinking. We don’t all learn the same way. Some people do fine with auditory learning. They listened well in school, took notes, behaved in class, studied those notes, and did well on the low level exams. There is almost no correlation between their success in the classroom and success in life afterwards. Life isn’t about remembering something for a test. Life is about taking what you know, combining with other stuff you know, and solving the problem in front of you. Many people are NOT auditory learners, but do better with visual input (they might be readers or watchers -- this is me). Other are kinetic learners - they prefer to learn in a more hands on way. They will dive in, take something apart and figure it out. These last two groups tend to be either bored or lost at school and many times end up hating it. But their chances for “success in life” are every bit as high as the auditory learners. Recently the scholarly literature has started debunking this notion of styles of learning because they can’t find strong evidence to prove anyone is inherently wired to learn one way or another. I’m aware of that research but point out that they are making conclusions based on the absence of evidence which is shaky logical ground. I also would point out that whether or not it’s genetically coded, people clearly DO develop learning preferences. I’d like for you to know yourself. This includes understanding how you learn. I for one don’t do as well listening to books on tape. Why? I’m a visual learner. When I’m listening to the book, I’m usually unable to NOT be doing something else and guess what? If I’m answering email while listening to a book, I’m not remembering what the speaker said. I know I know, it’s a little sad I even try. When I read, the text has my attention as almost much as anything else ever has. I’m not going to say my TOTAL attention, but I do get pretty engrossed in what I’m reading sometimes. If it’s good enough I won’t hear people talking to me, I won’t hear my phone, I might forget to eat. That’s just me. You are likely different. Once you understand how you learn, go with it. Fortunately today there are limitless ways to spoon knowledge into your melon. Listen, read, do - it matters not. You can find a way to learn what you need. Just PLEASE DO NOT allow any negative experiences from your school days to keep you from the beautiful quest for knowledge, beauty, wisdom, understanding, and truth. Resources on this subject http://psychlearningcurve.org/learning-myths-vs-learning-facts/ https://www.webtools.ncsu.edu/learningstyles/ https://poorvucenter.yale.edu/LearningStylesMyth http://sourcesofinsight.com/five-thinking-styles/ https://cft.vanderbilt.edu/guides-sub-pages/blooms-taxonomy/ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloom%27s_taxonomy https://tips.uark.edu/using-blooms-taxonomy/ Books from this past week: PrayerBook, by Ari Wajnberg. Yes friends, OUR Ari. I get the sense that this touching story is somewhat autobiographical. It’s a powerful message of understanding, acceptance, and a desire for lasting peace. The book tells a relatable and gripping story but weaves the message of peace throughout. Peace within, peace with families, peace between religions, peace between countries. Good stuff. You should get it and read it. The Hero Factor, Jeffrey Hayzlett with Jim Eber. The writers advocate a corporate culture where the people in the company are valued as much as the clients, the stakeholders, and the bottom line. Their view is this not only benefits the employees, but the company is stronger as well. I like the title and the premise but didn’t find anything groundbreaking new information here. Mindfulness, Mark Williams and Danny Penman. There’s a lot of buzz about mindfulness these days with surprisingly contradictory research that show that mindfulness may not improve focus or performance. But that’s not what this book is about. It’s about using the concepts of mindfulness to consciously improve your focus and move you toward unpleasant tasks or relationships. The authors provide a framework of 8 weeks of meditations that should do the trick. I haven’t decided whether to give it a try, but 8 minutes a day to improve my ability to get things done would be a good trade. If I try it I’ll keep you posted. $10 Tip: Resist the shiny object syndrome. Master one technique before branching out to others. It’s better to grow and scale the one technique than to get stuck trying to do too many things. But always keep your eyes open because opportunities are everywhere and constantly changing. The “thing” you’re doing will no doubt change over time and you need to be ready to adapt with the times. Until next time,
