"I always like starting with something out of context..." He of WH Lung greatness and now a solo live artist & DJ delivers a belter of a mix. Having grown up in Manchester's DIY band scene, Tom Sharkett came late to these things called dancing clubs and all that came with it, discovering electronic music through synthesizers while recording with his most excellent band W. H. Lung. His journey from guitar music to the dancefloor mirrors his present-day musical output; a collision of post-punk abrasiveness and the electronic that feels equally at home in sweaty basements and proper nightclubs. Now based back in Todmorden, Tom has carved out his own niche releasing on Optimo Music and System Olympia's Okay Nature label... and it's a bloody brilliant niche! His production approach remains coloured by those early days of bedroom experimentation with friends, citing the peerless Andrew Weatherall's fearlessly exploratory spirit as a key inspiration. It's interesting how he keeps coming around and around again, doesn't it? "His approach reminds me of the excited feeling I had trying to record things in my bedroom with my friends with anything we had at our disposal and just experimenting with the weird and wonderful results," When it comes to disc jockeying, Tom brings that same experimental energy. This mix was recorded in his panoramic valley-view studio in Todmorden, captures that ethos perfectly, opening with Spacemen 3 before wandering through territory that spans from Tirzah-esque experimentalism to classic New Beat. Between touring with Julie Byrne, collaborating with Raf Rundell - more on that to come soon pop pickers - and working on a new solo record featuring multiple vocalists, Tom's not a 'sit still' kind of guy. Just how we like it. Get it on, let's go... read more below. https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/tom-sharkett-the-altered-currents-mix/ @tomsharkett @whlung

How long had it been since she felt the sun on her face; since she felt the sand between her toes and the fresh sea air clearing her sinuses? Too long than she cared to remember... She could literally taste the freedom on the tip of her tongue, the liberation slowly cascading over her - it was a feeling she never thought she'd have again, but now here she was, looking out to sea with a renewed sense of existence. Who knows what twists and turns lay ahead, what obstacles might be just around the corner... She really couldn't wait to find out. Optimo Music's Digital Dancefloor series returns with its 49th instalment, this time welcoming Trule boss Al Wootton for a two-tracker that's certified to cause destruction on the dancefloor. Having featured Al's music under his Deadboy alias back in the day on their “Dark Was The Night” mix CD, Optimo now bring him on board for two chuggy, dubbed out disco tracks that both unfold over the course of nine minutes. Laid down live in takes and using hardware synths and external processing, he explores a host of different genres that he's always held dear from post-punk and psychedelia to proto house and dub.

He's one half of Brain Dancing, a regular party at Glasgow's celebrated Berkley Suite, an accomplished DJ duo that features at many of Scotland's best parties, and two pretty handy producers with releases on their hometown label Optimo Music as well as Berlin's Boys Noize sub label BNR Trax. Feast your ears on ‘House in E', their dark and dirty late night wobbler as the final track of their Plugged In EP. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIez3VwD7XM) Rob boasts a pretty amazing vinyl collection and he was kind enough to give us the low down on some of his favourites. We loved the energy of his chatty style, blasting through so many of the dancey tracks in his record bag, giving us real personal journey through so much of his music which has brought the energy to many a dance floor. Particular mention to the lovely wee anecdote of a chance encounter with the provider of one of our best episodes to date : Bobby Analog (Episode 5 of our Incoming series is definitely worth a listen if you haven't already). Here you go, a large dose of club ready heat for a big Saturday night lock in. Thanks to Molly Hickey for the beautiful artwork as always. www.instagram.com/mollyth.art/
Formed in New York in 2008, and now based in London, The Golden Filter have existed on the undulating musical fringes of electro, disco and post-punk for over a decade. Consisting of the creative and romantic partnership of Penelope Trapps and Stephen Hindman, the past few years have been the band enjoy their widest success yet. Releasing not only on their own 4gn3s imprint, but Optimo Music and Dischi Autumno, they built on a trilogy of much-loved releases for The Vinyl Factory to produce singles and releases that have been played by DJs including Ben UFO, Jennifer Cardini and Ame. Their propulsive, thrilling new mix for Phantasy reflects the bands forward-thinking musical vision, indebted to a rich history of EBM, electro, techno and post-punk. Featuring artists including Boy Harsher, Tom Of England, Aleksi Perälä and Intergalactic Gary, alongside a few classics, it’s a rhythmic ode to raw electronics and dancefloor imagination. Stephen from the band caught up with John Thorp to briefly talk about creative life in the UK, the delicate relationship at the centre of the band and what has kept the pair continually inspired for the previous ten years –https://shop.phantasysound.co.uk/blogs/news/phantasymix-22-the-golden-filter
@mrtcmusic Thomas Lea Clarke (MR TC) is a producer and DJ based in Glasgow. He was released on the Optimo Music and Neubau labels. MR TC often plays like a live-band. Sanna Almajedi talks to composer and trombonist Peter Zummo, and Eve Essex, a musician who performs with alto saxophone, piccolo, voice and electronics. The music heard in this episode was recorded live during the fifth edition of Satellite at Bar Laika on March 12, 2019, featuring Zummo and Essex. Peter Zummo is a composer and trombonist whose music encompasses both the contemporary-classical and vernacular genres. His work is informed by five decades of realizing the work of other composers, poets, bandleaders, choreographers, directors, and filmmakers. The way in which he maneuvers the contemporary trombone is genre non-conforming, and still finds a place in any genre. Zummo worked closely with Arthur Russell, appearing on many of his recordings. He has also collaborated with Pauline Oliveros, Phil Niblock, and Yasunao Tone. His music has been released by Foom, Optimo Music, and Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Eve Essex is a Brooklyn-based musician who performs with alto saxophone, piccolo, voice and electronics, harnessing elements of classical, drone, free jazz, and distorted pop. She has performed as Das Audit (with guitarist Craig Kalpakjian), as well as in trios Hesper (with James K and Via App), and HEVM (with MV Carbon and Hunter Hunt-Hendrix). She has also collaborated extensively with Juan Antonio Olivares as installation/performance-art duo Essex Olivares. Her first solo album, Here Appear, was released by Soap Library (cassette) and Sky Walking (LP) in 2018. She also appears on Pan’s compilation Mono No Aware. Select solo performances include Artists Space, Outpost Artists Resources, Safe Gallery, and Meakusma Festival. Satellite is a monthly experimental music series curated by Sanna Almajedi.
International Tribe is a weekly mix series hosted by Thris Tian. This week’s International Tribe mix comes from Hammer. Hammer is the artist name of Belfast born, Rory Hamilton. He started running club nights in Glasgow from the age of 20 and swiftly moved on to co-piloting the Feel My Bicep blog with good friends Andy and Matt from Bicep. He is also a consistent selector at the legendary Sub Club in Glasgow, with his Thunder Disco parties playing host to the likes of Floating Points, Ben UFO and Paranoid London. With releases on labels such as Feel My Bicep, Optimo Music and Loft Records, Hamilton also runs his own imprint The Hammer Hits, which he used to output his EP “Love Somebody” late last year. Following these releases and his latest EP Ozone on Modern Magic, Hammer is continuing to increase his international presence through bookings at venues such as Panorama Bar, Robert Johnson, and Warehouse Project. For his International Tribe mix, Hammer focuses on uplifting selections or in his words "I wanted to put together a mix that was really uplifting, something that gives you a wee buzz and gets you moving. I included some brand new music, a couple of unreleased tracks by myself, and as always, some older bits"

This year marked the return of the infamous duo known as The Golden Filter. Now based in the UK the turn of the year saw the pair release a new album on Optimo Music which saw them place prominence on electronics and the growl of machines. The album was a collective mix of low slung beats, enticing vocals and delicious synths. It seemed more apt than ever to ask the duo to contribute to our mix series, something we should of done a long time ago in all honesty,
And so we come to our 100th episode. We have been lucky enough to have showcased some incredible mixes since we started; it's truly been a pleasure to feature established guests as well as giving a platform to lesser known names. For this milestone mix we always had a particular guest in mind and we're more than honoured they agreed to be a part of the series. Optimo's musical ethos bleeds into the way we approach all our musical endeavours, be it a club night, DJ set, the label or indeed a mix series. We often find ourselves difficult to explain musically, which in this day & age of everything having to sit in its own box can on occasion be a source of frustration. But then when you look at Optimo who constantly and succesfully champion just great music who cares about genres. It's a mantra that's hopefully mirrored across our mix series. This year Keith and Jonnie enter their 20th year with Optimo; more relevant than ever with their exciting, eclectic DJ performances around the globe. Keith's two labels Optimo Music and Optimo Trax are garnered to shining a light on new and unusual music both for the club and beyond. Thanks to Keith for putting this edition together and thanks to you , dear listener for being on the journey with us. Much love, Clandestino x https://soundcloud.com/twitch https://soundcloud.com/optimo-music
Thomas Lea Clarke is DJ and producer out of Glasgow where he’s been turning heads internationally with his own brand of raw and fearless analogue dance music as MR TC. His first two EP’s ’Soundtrack for Strangers’ and ’Surf and Destroy’ found a home on JD Twitch’s Optimo Music imprint with further edits and remixes on Huntley’s and Palmers, La Belle and Rotten City Records. His sound is one that mixes organic elements with electronic instrumentation: guitar and live percussion meeting drum machines and synths, soaked in space echo and spring reverb. https://soundcloud.com/mr_tc_glasgow
JD Twitch is a true musical magpie. Over his long and storied career the Scot has been responsible for seminal Glasgow party Optimo alongside Jonnie Wilkes, has put out post punk compilations, done trance mixes, run various different labels (from Autonomous Africa to Optimo Music) and is a famously skilled and eclectic DJ who has headlined all over the world. He has done a fabric CD and a compilation for R&S, produces with Dave Clark as Optimo (Espacio) as well as solo under a wide range of aliases. As such he is a veritable mine of musical knowledge and a real pillar of the underground scene. For his Dekmantel podcast he has delivered us something, as you would expect, rather special. “It's a mix of all Dutch dance tracks from the very early 90s,” he says. “It features a handful of well known classics but lots of forgotten gems and these were all records I played incessantly in very sweaty raves at that time, so a few of the records are a little scratchy, dusty, worn down. I wanted to do this mix as I was mad about Dutch records back then and I think Holland produced so much amazing music during this period and had a very distinctive, unique sound and perhaps a lot of people today don't know it was one of the pioneering nations of house and techno. The club I did back then, Pure, brought over a lot of dutch artists to play in the early 90s - Dimitri (many, many times), Eddie de de Clercq, Marcello, Random XS, Terrace, Miss Djax, Unit Moebius, Orlando Voorn, Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia and Acid Junkies to name a few. Lastly, I think the records from back then still sound great today!” Tune in and you will surely agree.
