We had the pleasure of interviewing Liang Lawrence over Zoom video! London-based singer-songwriter Liang Lawrence shares her new single “Kiss My Apocalypse” via The Other Songs. Featuring fuzzy, serotonin-boosting electric guitars, the new song is an unabashed declaration of love and commitment.Lawrence said of the song: “‘Kiss My Apocalypse' is probably the least casual way you could tell someone that you want to spend the rest of your life with them. I found it refreshing to write a love song that just simply puts my cards on the table and lets someone know how I feel.”“Kiss My Apocalypse” arrives on the heels of Lawrence's new EP What's Dead and Gone, an evocative coming-of-age portrait that's garnered praise from BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing and Atwood Magazine who hailed the body of work as “masterful storytelling and unforgettable melodies.” She celebrated the EP's release with a sold-out debut headlining show at London's Omeara this fall. Over the last few years, Lawrence has continued to build a devoted loyal following – her debut EP letters to myself amassed over 1 million streams in a matter of weeks upon its 2023 release and earned support from BBC Radio 1 Future Pop.Having grown up in eight different countries, Lawrence's ability to find a home everywhere she goes is reflected in her borderless audience with listeners around the world. Initially drawn to music as a source of grounding consistency, she taught herself to play guitar and write songs from her bedroom, ultimately creating music that tells stories and expresses the messy emotions in everyday life.We want to hear from you! Internationally-acclaimed and award-winning singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith first sang and strummed his way into the hearts of music lovers in the early-mid 1990s. At that time, the distorted fuzz and raw angst of grunge bands dominated the airwaves, and most "folk" singers watched from the sidelines, clutching their acoustic guitars and cursing their lack of effects pedals - but not Ron. Amidst the dense and glorious swirl of guitar rock, Sexsmith offered up his self-titled debut album of simple, heartfelt songs. The melodically refined and gracefully sculpted nature of his music gradually won the singer fans around the world, including rock n roll dignitaries such as Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and Paul McCartney. 30-ish years and 17 albums later, Ron Sexsmith has become one of the most revered songwriters in the world, while continuing to create music that is essential, fresh, and timeless. In this conversation, Ron guides host Jane Gowan and co-host Tim Vesely through the storied travels and charmed encounters of his illustrious career to date.Sexsmith turned 60 this January. To celebrate this milestone, he and his band are performing a special one-night-only concert on Feb 29 at Toronto's Massey Hall. The show is a career retrospective, highlighting songs from every release to date. Tickets are still available (see link below). My wife and I listen to your podcast every time we're in the car. And I listen at work. On St. Patty's Day we usually go to a good Irish bar for some Guinness and shepherd's pie and sometimes Bangers and Mash, depending on when we get there. A few years ago we were lucky enough to go to Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland; a great 10 day vacation. Last week (Saturday) was our Dublin, Ohio's St. Patricks Day parade and we always go to the Dublin Irish Festival in August. Our favorite bands are Gaelic Storm, We Banjo 3 and Eileen Ivers. It was a thrill to be there and listen to these amazing musicians. The Dublin Irish Festival is ALWAYS a great time! Thanks again for sharing your musical talent, and creating such a wonderful listening experience! Slainte to you too, Marc!" A discussion with performance poet, performer, and playwright [Amalia Ortiz](Amaliaortiz.net) who directs the theater arts program at [SAY Sí.](Saysi.org) SAY Sí is a year-round, long-term, tuition-free multidisciplinary arts program in San Antonio serving middle and high school students primarily at or below the poverty line. In this podcast, Ortiz talks about the work of SAY Sí in general and the theater program in particular. Ortiz discusses the program's emphasis on producing original theater and encouraging a practical application of the arts. The students learn all aspects of theater: they write the plays, cast them, direct them, create the costumes and scenery, do the sound and the lighting. They learn to work with their strengths, augment their weaknesses, and to come together as team. Ortiz also discusses creating theater in community and for community and the issues at the border for both the students and the teachers. Ortiz discusses her own work and the impact of growing up three miles from the border on her life and her art, her commitment to and love of performance poetry, her 2020 American Book Award for Oral Literature, and her latest book The Canción Cannibal Cabaret & Other Songs. And we talk about her joy teaching at SAY Sí where she feels like a producer—helping to nurture ideas into original theater. We'd love to know your thoughts--email us at artworkspod@arts.gov.

*Warning* Some explicit language exists in this episode. Listener discretion is suggested.Join the hosts, Roman and Jaren Daniels, as they discuss possible angelic encounters, stories of possible guardian angels, and go into theories regarding the potential truths behind these encounters. They also discuss the idea of duality, where there is a push and a pull of dark and light forces that seem to exist in most facets of our existence. Are Angels and Demons real? Are they able to influence our lives? Physicist Frank Wilczek and Professor Janna Levin discuss Wilczek's book, “Fundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality.” Frank Wilczek jointly won The Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004, for his graduate work at Princeton with David Gross. He was among the earliest MacArthur Fellows and has won many awards both for his scientific work and his writing, which includes hundreds of articles in leading scientific journals. His “Wilczek's Universe” column appears regularly in the Wall Street Journal. Wilczek is the Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Janna Levin is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Barnard College of Columbia University. A Guggenheim Fellow, Janna has contributed to an understanding of black holes, the cosmology of extra dimensions, and gravitational waves in the shape of spacetime. She is the presenter of NOVA's Black Hole Apocalypse special, aired on PBS. Levin's Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space explains the discovery of the century: the sound of spacetime ringing from the collision of two black holes over a billion years ago. On today's episode, I talk to musician Joe Jack Talcum. Originally from Wagontown, PA, Joe Genaro AKA Joe Jack Talcum is the guitarist and co-lead singer of the seminal punk band The Dead Milkmen. Formed out of his home recording project dating back to the late '70s, the group didn't really coalesce until Joe went to college at Temple University. Starting with 1985's Big Lizard in My Backyard, they recorded dozens of albums and EPs, and though they broke up in 1995, they've reunited a number of times since for various shows. Outside of The Dead Milkmen, Joe is prolific, recording a number of albums on his own and with groups like The Low Budgets. His latest album Joe Jack Talcum sings Railroad Bill and Other Songs was just released late last year! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Timid, the Brave over Zoom video! Timid, the Brave is the solo moniker for Canadian songwriter Tim Selles. His 2011 self-titled debut EP, recorded with Scott Orr of Other Songs, was named one of iTunes Canada’s “Best Of” that year. After growing somewhat tired of the grind of solo performances and simple recordings, Selles recruited a handful of other Hamilton musicians to lend their talents to 2017’s LP, Firesale. The forthcoming record, Vuja De, builds on that communal transition, featuring Nate Wall (King Park) on drums and percussion, Ethan Rooney (The Good Hunters) on bass, and Gareth Inkster on pretty much everything else. Set for a Spring 2021 release, the upcoming record chronicles the cyclical nature of life, exploring the possibility of finding new meaning in familiar experiences. New singles "Black Cat" and "St. Maria" are out now! Full-length album to follow later in the year. We want to hear from you! Episode Notes This is Receding Horizons, Episode 2, where we talk about the exciting era of gravitational wave observations and multi-messenger astronomy. Brina Martinez is an undergraduate studying physics and computer science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She is currently a research assistant at the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy and in the Time Domain Astronomy Group operating the Cristina Torres Memorial Observatory, both under the mentorship of Dr. Mario Díaz. Brina is a published scientist. Her research focuses on characterizing noise sources intrinsic to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO. She has participated in a research experience for undergraduates at Louisiana State University under Dr. Guillermo Valdes and Dr. Gabriela González, and was a LIGO undergraduate fellow at Caltech under Dr. Derek Davis. Brina is a board member and resident astrophysicist at the South Texas Astronomical Society, as well as a board member and secretary at the Brownsville Chapter of the Society of Physics Students. She was the recipient of several awards including a scholarship from the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, and a Victor M. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mabes over Zoom video!British singer-songwriter Mabes shares a delightfully witty double release out now via The Other Songs. The two tracks featured include her original tongue-in-cheek single “Alone On Christmas Eve” plus a rendition of the iconic hit “Let It Snow” (originally by Frank Sinatra and later covered by Dean Martin). With dazzling brass melodies and heartening live piano and strings, Mabes serves up the perfect tunes for you to drink and dance your sorrows away as we approach an unprecedented holiday season. On “Alone On Christmas Eve” Mabes notes, “Thinking of all the potential lonely people this 'Covid' Christmas, it was too sad not to write a song about it... however, I wanted the song to have a playful bounce, so people could dance and twirl in their living rooms at the same time. In the song I talk about my lover who, for whatever reason, is not with me on Christmas Eve. Because the feeling of loneliness is overwhelming, I am drinking my sorrows away, which is making me giddy and satirical throughout the song. By the end of it I’m almost mocking Christmas…” On “Let It Snow” she adds, “I wanted to include 'Let It Snow' too. It's a beautifully written song and warms my heart. Dean Martin’s warm tones take me back to my childhood when I played it every Christmas. The key change in the middle always fascinated me too. It’s a staple Christmas song and I hope I’ve done it justice.”Mabes is currently gearing up for her Too Young To Love EP due out December 4th. Tracks on the EP include her latest release “Caught Up,” the title track “Too Young To Love,” “Danny,” and the final single to be revealed entitled “Catch 22.” The new music arrives exactly one year after her debut album Wait & See and follows her Keeping The Noise Down EP (RD May 22, 2020 via Amuse), together amassing critical acclaim from the likes of 1883 Magazine, American Songwriter, Clash, Culture Collide, Earmilk, Euphoria, Ones To Watch, Sounds Like Nashville, and The Independent to name a few. To date, Mabes’ songs have been featured on Spotify’s official playlists such as New Music Friday, Hot Acoustics, Mellow Pop, No Stress, Very Nearly Nashville, and Sad Songs, among others. Likewise on Apple Music, she has landed on New Music Daily, Acoustic Chill, Breaking Singer-Songwriter, Mellow Days, Today’s Acoustic, Today’s Easy Hits, Today's Acoustic, and more. The quickly rising singer-songwriter’s listenership has peaked at 1 million on Spotify while her collective streams across DSPs have surpassed 30 million. Describing her sound as “honest” with “a country twang influenced by pop,” Mabes first picked up the guitar at just 15 years old and learned to write as her fascination for British act Laura Marling’s folk-poetry developed. Though oceans away in the UK, Mabes also developed an admiration for American artists and credits Carole King, Joni Mitchell, John Mayer, and The Smiths as some of her influences. Mabes’ forward-thinking, emotionally raw songwriting style, and driven ambition has led to relatable, cutting-edge intelligent folk and pop that makes her stand out of the pack. With her dreamy vocals and an air of timeless authenticity, there’s no doubt Mabes is leveling up as a global entity and artist to watch in 2020 and beyond. We want to hear from you! Podcast Notes Key Takeaways Janna’s mother taught her to read books while her father taught her to ask questions:“My dad’s an MD, so where my mom taught me how to read, my dad taught me how to ask questions. My dad’s just a super curious guy.” – Janna LevinMath can show you things you can’t see:“I discover stuff through math that is so counterintuitive that I really wrestle with it, which is why I love math, because it’s telling me stuff that I can’t see.” – Janna LevinThe universe could very much be like Pac-Man. If you go past the right side, you simply end up on the left side:“He goes out one side. He comes in the other. He goes out the top. He comes in the bottom…I go out to the right side of the universe. I come in the left side. I go out the top of the universe. I come in the bottom. There’s no need for that to live in another space. That’s it.” – Janna LevinSome time travel is possible: “There are forms of time-travel that we absolutely know are possible. I can travel to the forward of your time. I can’t travel to the forward of mine, but I can travel to the forward of yours.” – Janna LevinLife is unfair and nobody is owed anything, that’s the way it is. Each obstacle is a test trial:“So I started to see life as a series of obstacles that were test trials, teaching modules of how to be a better person and to pave the way behind you, not in front of you. Wow! I mean, I knew we'd be recording for a while last weekend. But, over 7 hours? Holy cow! Yeah, well the good news is that I have a lot of new material for you all. As you can see here, I'm breaking it up into chunks over the next few weeks. More digestible that way I think. This first part is the opening and some discussion on the current status of the podcast compared to what it was when it all started. The opening tune is some of The Melachrino Strings from "Cool Water and Other Songs of the West" So, there's some fun banter here. Definitely worthwhile. We talk to theoretical astrophysicist Janna Levin about her book Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space.
In space, no one can hear you scream, but, using the right instruments, scientists can pick up all types of cosmic vibrations – the sort we can turn into sound. After a decade of listening, LIGO, a billion-dollar physics experiment, has detected gravitational waves caused by the collision of massive black holes, a brief shaking of spacetime that can be translated into a short squeal. We listen to the chirp of black holes crashing into each other and wonder: could the universe contain more than individual sounds, but have actual musical structure? A theoretical physicist and jazz saxophonist updates the ancient philosophical concept of the Music of the Spheres to probe the most vexing questions confronting modern cosmology. Find out how the evolution of the universe resembles an improvisational jazz piece, and the musical inspiration John Coltrane drew from Albert Einstein. Since 1916 when Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves—the powerful aftermath occurring when black holes collide—scientists have been trying to provide evidence of this profusion of energy. However, a telescope cannot record this event—the only evidence is the sound of spacetime ringing. Janna Levin, one of today’s most eminent theoretical astrophysicists and an award-winning writer, recounts the fascinating story of the surprises, disappointments, achievements, and risks of the scientists who embarked on an epic endeavor to capture the first sounds from space in her latest book, Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space. Join us as Levin explores this radical scientific campaign to record the soundtrack of our universe with cosmologist Sean Carroll. For photos from the program, click here.

We talk to Janna Levin, professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College and author of Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space.
On Thursday, February 11, 2016, the National Science Foundation made a thrilling announcement: gravitational waves—first predicted by Einstein as part of his general theory of relativity in 1916—had been detected for the first time. This incredible development made front page news and was reported by outlets across the country. How was such a remarkable discovery, a long hundred years after Einstein’s prediction, made possible? In this Science Salon based on her new book, Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space, astrophysicist and award-winning writer Dr. Janna Levin tells the epic story of the scientific campaign to record these waves—the holy grail of modern cosmology. A handful of physicists, led by Kip Thorne and Ronald Drever at Caltech and Rainer Weiss at MIT, have been working nearly their entire careers to conceive of, design, and build an instrument sensitive enough to detect gravitational waves. Levin delves into the lives and fates of the scientists, painting compelling portraits of these very human visionaries. She journeys from Los Angeles to Boston, to the LIGO interferometers in Hanford, Washington and Livingston, Louisiana, to the labs, offices, and observatories where the work in this great quest has painstakingly unfolded over the past five decades. Her account of the personalities, surprises, setbacks, and successes is a compelling and intimate portrait of the people and processes of modern science.

Keith Dion has had an astounding career as a musician, songwriter, producer, and filmmaker. But the story of what made this musician great goes much deeper. What made this musician great is an incredible story of tenacity. Severely abused and then abandoned by his parents, he determined he would succeed. He was inspired to become a musician by Jimi Hendrix. Many years later he hooked up with Jimi Hendrix's bass player, Noel Redding. Most well-known as being the producer, manager and bandleader for the late Noel Redding of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he also has produced records for Arthur Lee and Love, and has played in New Zealand’s classic cult band The Ponsonby DC’s, as well as San Francisco alternative groups The Ophelias, 3:05 AM, and Corsica, producing records for all of them along the way. Over the years he also recorded or performed with members of The Kinks, Thin Lizzy, Santana, The Counting Crows, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, and The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Most recently he’s released the very critically acclaimed collaboration with Jefferson Starship members Diana Mangano and Prairie Prince - Reno Nevada and Other Songs of Gambling, Vice and Betrayal as The Great American Robber Barons. After both of his parents died in Reno, Nevada, the San Francisco-based artist discovered a whole new dimension to his musicality. “Their deaths made me face a lot of stuff, and I keep peeling back the layers and finding these dark aspects inside of me,” Keith says. “Every song on the album is about gambling, vice and betrayal, and we really mean it.” In this interview he shares his experiences of 30 years, playing with famous people and his record deals. But, it took the death of his parents for him to start writing lyrics. In Snapshots of Heaven and Hell, he shares how he survived filicide and extreme childhood abuse at the hands of his Vietnam Era PTSD damaged father.
