Today’s guest is acclaimed interior designer and photographer Matthew Patrick Smyth. He has been on ELLE Décor’s “A” List, his work has been featured in House Beautiful, Traditional Home, New York Magazine and more. He also wrote a new book “Through a Designer’s Eye: A Focus on Interiors”. We talk about his polished yet comfortable spaces, his love of artisanal pieces and antiques, his attention to detail and light, and some touching personal stories. What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Trials & Triumphs about feeling at home in a temporary rental, a pregnancy announcement (!), COVID within the family, tearing down and rebuilding a house, a nightmare new build next door, considering new drapery, and dishwasher woes. Matthew explains how his process begins — starting with the floorplan. Where Matthew finds his artisanal pieces and what he loves about them. Matthew’s love of antiques led him to interior design and carries into all elements of his style. How Matthew’s experience as a photographer impacts his design. The ways Matthew was able to decorate a casual seaside home and still use antiques. Why Matthew has an affinity for round dining tables and what chairs he recommends. More about Matthew’s personal home and falling in love with it. Matthew uses upholstery to modernize an older house with all antique interiors. Matthew’s love of black(ish) paint. What Matthew does to individualize the work for his clients. Matthew shares about his work and friendship with Gloria Vanderbilt. How is a designer’s eye different from the average person’s? Decorating Dilemma Hi Jenny, First of all, thank you for including the floorplan—so helpful! This is a very generous width for a dining room so the sideboard is not going to throw off the room; there’s still plenty of room and no flow problem whatsoever. It’s not a floor to ceiling piece, so your eye will go right over it. I would put a big mirror over the sideboard to reflect the windows and the beautiful view. That will really open up the room. It’s really important to keep that chandelier centered with the windows so I would not touch that. The table centered in the room is the way to go. It’s good that you’re thinking about it now…but don’t overthink it! It’s actually a nicely designed floor plan and well proportioned; I wouldn’t play with that. You’re in good shape, Jenny! Next Tuesday marks 15 years since the first edition of A View from the Bridge. To mark this, we are delving into the archives to find some of the episodes that made the podcast what it is today. We begin with the first ever “Live Recording” of AVFTB which took place on Saturday 7th April 2007 outside the Bunkers Hill in Nottingham. Having finished 4 points adrift of newly crowned EIHL and Challenge Cup Champions, Coventry, the Giants were going into a semi-final against Nottingham hoping to make right the failure 12 months previous which had witnessed the Newcastle Vipers unceremoniously dump Ed Courtenay's then EIHL Champion Giants (including Theo Fleury) out of the playoffs at the Semi Final Stage. Now standing in the way of the Giant's first final since 2003, were the Nottingham Panthers. Mike Ellis' team had finished 5th in the league run but were bouyant having weathered a fight back from their nearest and dearest, the Sheffield Steelers, in the Quarter Final 2nd leg to hold on and progress 6-5 on aggregate. The decision was made, 2 years into AVFTB to purchase some cheap equipment to plug into the Apple iBook and try and capture the pre-playoffs buzz outside of Bunkers. Patrick Smyth and Aaron Kernohan sat outside on the Saturday Lunchtime with a few beers, a few mates and a few opposition fans to discuss what was to happen that weekend. They discuss Cardiff v Coventry in the first semi final, Belfast v Nottingham in the second and are joined by fans of all team colours. The language can be a bit “industrial”, yet it remains a fond memory for all of us. Something we tried, and something we enjoyed. Nottingham would defeat Belfast in the Semi Final on Penalty Shots and subsequently see David Clark lift the trophy in the same manner over the Cardiff Devils on the Sunday. Crazy for us to think this was 13 years ago. We hope you enjoy it.
In our fourth episode we move to cover the podcast genre which is now a big part of UK hockey media but out guest this week was something of a podcast pioneer when he started a podcast covering the Belfast Giants in 2005.Since then 'A View From The Bridge' has produced well over 700 episodes and has been made an official outlet of the Giants along the way.Patrick Smyth is this week's guest and we talk about his journey from being 'just a fan' to producing the EIHL longest running podcast. You can follow A View From The Bridge on Twitter @AVFTB, Patrick himself is @patricksmyth, while old episodes can be found at www.kingdomofthegiants.com/podcasts.Voices of Hockey can be found on Twitter @hockeyvoices or you can email voicesofhockey@march74.co.ukProduced by March 74 Sports Media (@march74sports)Music: Take Me On Down by Jay Denton

Nick & Cecil talk about Vic Fangio’s apology for his comments via ZOOM call yesterday regarding racism in the NFL. Fangio mentions in the ZOOM call that the NFL is a meritocracy and Nick says everyone has a chance to correct their wrongs. Nick would have appreciated an apology from Fangio via the same ZOOM format instead of a statement, and reminds the listeners that nobody is perfect. Cecil draws comparisons to Michael Sam and Nick would like to give Fangio a chance to explain his answers. Nick & Cecil react to Broncos head coach Vic Fangio’s comments on telling Patrick Smyth to make the players less available to the media in the 2020 season. Cecil brings up the worst-kept secret in Foxborough and that’s Bill Belichick and his love for Sam Darnold. Nick says Belichick wants a proven quarterback that can lead the team down the field consistently. Cecil says both Brady and Belichick deserve credit for the Patriots’ run of Super Bowls.
Washington correspondent Suzanne Lynch reports from Des Moines on the recent chaos at the Iowa caucus. And as trade negotiations begin between Britain and the EU, Patrick Smyth in Brussels reveals who has the strongest hand.
The UK general election campaign is, among other things, a battle for what kind of Brexit will ultimately happen. Our Europe editor Patrick Smyth sets out five possible election outcomes and the sort of Brexit the EU expects from each, from No Deal to a new deal - or no Brexit at all. But let's not get ahead of ourselves: the campaign is just beginning. To understand the dynamics and tactics at play in these early stages we talk first to Patrick Maguire, a political correspondent with New Statesman magazine.
From Brussels, Patrick Smyth on how the EU views Boris Johnson's Brexit proposals, where the problems lie, and what EU insiders think is going to happen next. From Washington, Suzanne Lynch with the latest on the accelerating scandal concerning President Donald Trump's efforts to uncover evidence of Joe Biden's corruption, a mess from which neither man is likely to emerge unscathed.
In agreeing to regulatory checks in the Irish Sea, the DUP have made a major Brexit concession, a "massive shift", says the Belfast Newsletter's political editor Sam McBride, the importance of which has not yet been grasped outside Northern Ireland. Hugh and Pat talk to Sam about the thinking behind the move and the significance of the proposed Stormont veto. Then they talk to our Europe editor Patrick Smyth about the specific problems Brussels has with Boris Johnson's new Brexit proposals. Is there is any sign of negotiators reentering "the tunnel"?
As A View from the Bridge plans for its 15th Season of podcasting, we decided to cherry pick a couple of the older editions to revisit. First up, "Product Placement" from October 2013. This was one of our final podcasts as an "unofficial" entity, and was released on the same day as the announcement of Jim Gillespies indution to the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. However, this "Product Placement" edition was released as a podcast on it's own to discuss the events of the week gone by. Hosted (as usual) by Patrick Smyth, he was joined by Davy McGimpsey and Neil "The Coach" Russell. Guests included Mark Hitchcock and the then BBC journalist, Owen Bradley
The US is to send 1,000 extra troops to the Middle East, following a move last month to send 1,500 troops to the region. It comes as tensions between the US and Iran continue to escalate, amid fears that a misstep by either side could trigger a military conflict that nobody wants. Suzanne Lynch is on the line from Washington with the latest. Plus: EU leaders hoping for a break from Brexit at this week's summit in Brussels will be sorely disappointed. As the Tory leadership competition continues, and with claims from some contenders that they could get a new deal from Brussels, Brexit has been forced onto the summit agenda. No official statement is expected out of the meeting, but Brexit is likely to get a mention during the end-of-summit press conference. Europe editor Patrick Smyth reports on what else will be up for discussion.
On the second day of his official State visit to the UK, US president Donald Trump on Tuesday promised Britain a “phenomenal” post-Brexit trade deal, suggesting Britain's public health service should be on the table, and congratulated outgoing prime minister Theresa May. London editor Denis Staunton is on the line with the highlights from the visit. Plus: As the dust settles on the European elections, discussion in Brussels and Strasbourg has turned to who will lead the European institutions. Manfred Weber is the European People's Party ‘spitzenkandidat' to succeed Jean Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission, but it seems he will not be a shoo-in for it. Patrick Smyth reports on who is in the running for Europe's top jobs.
This week's podcast features analysis of the European election results in the UK and across Europe, from Denis Staunton and Patrick Smyth. Plus, the slow race to succeed Theresa May as Tory leader and UK Prime Minister.
Patrick Smyth in Brussels and Denis Staunton in London talk about the latest Brexit developments, including Speaker John Bercow's very consequential ruling, and why the EU is likely to agree to Theresa May's request fora short extension but may baulk at a long one.
Theresa May has united Tory MPs behind her plan to go to Brussels to seek legally binding changes to the Brexit withdrawal agreement, exploring 'alternative options' to the Irish backstop. The trouble is, the EU won’t reopen the deal and they’ve said so time and again. The Guardian’s Brexit correspondent Lisa O’Carroll, Irish Times Europe editor Patrick Smyth and Irish Times deputy political editor Fiach Kelly join Hugh to cut through the spin to explain what happened in Westminster last night and what it all means.
The European Council is expected to endorse the draft Brexit withdrawal text when it meets this Sunday 25th November. Theresa May appears to have seen off the detractors within the Tory party for now, but the real challenge for the British Prime Minister will come in the form of parliamentary arithmetic when she attempts to get that deal through the House of Commons. On the face of it right now, she doesn't have the numbers. Could there be a narrow way through? London editor Denis Staunton and Europe editor Patrick Smyth are on the line. Later: Last week the former president of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos was given the Tipperary International Peace Award in recognition of his role in brokering a peace deal with FARC, bringing to an end 50 years of violence in his country. But two years after the peace agreement, the situation for Colombians appears to be worse. Irish Times deputy foreign editor David McKechnie spoke to Mr Santos at the ceremony in Tipperary Town.
This week: Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe will be happy with the outcome of Tuesday's Ecofin meeting, which saw his German counterpart suggest a two year delay on the introduction of a digital sales tax and the French propose a compromise, or to borrow a Brexit term, a backstop measure. Europe editor Patrick Smyth and Olivia Buckley of the Irish Tax Institute join Ciaran to discuss how the tax will work and why Ireland is so opposed to it.Plus: The 100% Club launched on the fringes of the European Climate Innovation Summit in Dublin this week, aimed at challenging firms to reveal annually the full extent of their greenhouse gas emissions. Kevin O'Sullivan has the details. But first: Peter Hamilton has a roundup of some of the week's other stories, including Ryanair's sacking of six members of staff over a viral photograph, good news for Ikea in Ireland and Sharon Donnery beaten by an Italian economist for a top ECB banking job. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

First: In Brexit negotiations over the Northern Irish border, sides have moved closer in the last 24 hours, facilitated by new forms of words over the 'backstop'. Denis Staunton explains. Later: Donald Trump recently announced he wants to tear up the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and told reporters he would increase the US nuclear stockpile – including against China – “until people come to their senses”. Has a new arms race arrived, and what does it mean for security in Europe? Patrick Smyth has analysis.
What happens if the UK crashes out of the EU? On the EU side, there is a special task force dedicated to figuring just that out, while the UK is publishing numerous papers covering what will happen in all walks of life. Little, though, is certain, and much is entirely unclear. Especially unclear is what will happen on the Irish border. But whatever the outcome, the world will be a very different place the day after. Our guest today is Europe Editor Patrick Smyth, who talks though what is known and unknown about No Deal Brexit, how likely it is and what is being done to avoid it.
Chris Dooley talks to Patrick Smyth about Italy's unfolding constitutional and political crisis, and to Suzanne Lynch about the scarcely believable saga of the Trump-Kim Summit.
A bizarre political experiment in underway in Italy, and Brussels is watching with concern. Patrick Smyth on the makeup of the new government, its internal contradictions, its plans for the economy and immigration - and the novice who will likely become the next Prime Minister. Plus, Tom Hennigan on the reelection, widely seen as democratically illegitimate, of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Despite his win, Maduro faces huge obstacles both within and without the chavista movement he leads, as Venezuela lurches away from democracy.
Ireland today joined the collective move by western nations against Russia, announcing that one diplomat is to be expelled after a nerve attack on a former Russian agent earlier this month. It follows similar declarations by 16 other EU countries on Monday, as tensions between Russia and the West deepen over the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Britain. On today's World View podcast, Europe editor Patrick Smyth reports from Brussels on what lasting impact the crisis is likely to have on EU-Russia relations and whether Europe can maintain a united front on the issue. But first, former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont is preparing to spend Easter in prison in Germany after he was detained on Sunday by local police just south of the Danish border. We hear from Derek Scally in Berlin and Guy Hedgecoe in Madrid.
Washington Correspondent Suzanne Lynch, Europe Editor Patrick Smyth and foreign affairs specialist Ruadhan Mac Cormaic stay down with host Chris Dooley to look back on another historic year in world affairs.
Suzanne Lynch reports from Washington as the city comes to grips with the indictment of former Trump campaign personnel. Former campaign manager Paul Manafort and his business associate Rick Gates plead not guilty to 12 charges. Meanwhile it was revealed that George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to the FBI about his communication with Russian officials. Also on the podcast we hear from Patrick Smyth in Brussels, where Catalan independence leader Carles Puidgemont arrived yesterday, and Guy Hedgecoe in Barcelona about the continuing deterioration of the relationship between Catalonia and the Spanish government.
We return to the topic of Brexit. Patrick Smyth in Brussels has the latest on negotiations between the EU and UK taking place this week. Joe Brennan tells us about the latest announcements and rumours around banking and insurance moves, while Eoin Burke Kennedy looks at the impact so far on Irish industries. In part two our resident motoring expert Michael McAleer explains the financing method that up to 30% of those buying brand new cars in Ireland are now using. A Personal Finance Plan is a good option for many - but not for all. And more regulation may be needed, says Michael.

The Belfast Giants TV commentary from Simon Kitchen and Patrick Smyth as the Stena Line Belfast Giants win 2-1 in overtime win over the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday 7th January 2017.
Approaching the end of his tenure as Washington Correspondent for The Irish Times, Simon Carswell joins Patrick Smyth to reflect on a tumultuous period in America. Happy Christmas and thanks to all our listeners in 2016.
Angela Merkel is expected to come under further pressure to take a hard line on law and order following Monday night's attack on a Christmas market in Berlin, says Berlin Correspondent Derek Scally. He spoke to The Irish Times World View podcast from the city where 12 people have been killed and 48 others injured, 18 of them seriously. The German Chancellor is a leader on the defensive ahead of her bid for a fourth term in next year's general election, says Scally, and events in Berlin could strike a major blow to her image as a safe pair of hands for her Christian Democrats (CDU). From Israel, Mark Weiss has reaction on Donald Trump's latest controversial appointment. Orthodox Jewish bankruptcy lawyer, David Friedman, is to be the next US ambassador to Israel, much to the dismay of liberal Jews and Palestinians alike. Friedman is opposed to longstanding US issues and supports illegal settlements. He is also against a two-state solution and there is excitement among right-wing Israelis that this would be taken off the table completely when Trump assumes power. Weiss told the podcast most people are adopting a ‘wait and see' attitude, but there are fear that an unprecedented move of the US embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem may happen under a Trump presidency, while Palestinians are worried that settlements will be given the green light. Also in this podcast, presenter Patrick Smyth asks: are Alaska's polar bears on the verge of extinction from uncontrolled global warming? He recalled his trip to the village of Kaktovik in the Arctic Circle some years ago, where polar bears are now migrating in greater numbers as their search for food becomes more and more difficult due to climate change.
Elite League podcast presenters Patrick Smyth and Clare Freeman continue to mull over highlights of the 2015/16 season. This week, they speak with the Gardiner podcasters. Marijuana: The Performance Enhancer with Ross Rebagliati. Ross is a Canadian professional snowboarder, Olympic Gold Medal Winner and founder of Legacy Brands, a CBD consumables company and Ross' Gold, a medical cannabis merchandise company. Ross Rebagliati is a firm believer that Marijuana is a performance enhancer, and that usage can be helpful for some activities such as extreme sports, as it improves muscle relaxation, reduces anxiety, and extincts fear memories (e.g., negative experiences) leading to enhanced performance. It also improves sleep time and recovery, which may favour performance when an athlete is facing multiple competitions in a short period of time. Ross believes that Cannabis has many benefits of which CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the biggest. CBD has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Reducing inflammation helps to better manage the aches and pains an athlete's body chronically endures. It also has a calming effect reducing stress and anxiety which are two more realities of being an athlete. In January 2013, Rebagliati and his business partner, Patrick Smyth, launched Ross' Gold, a medical marijuana business. Ross' Gold's primary focus remains on establishing a brand in Canada and gaining a foothold in the industry under the federal government's new regulations. Under the new Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations, cannabis would be treated as any other narcotic used for medical purposes, enabling patients to acquire products as needed based on a health-care practitioner's prescription.
