Former U.K. House of Commons Speaker John Bercow, a longtime Conservative lawmaker who gained international fame refereeing the country's bruising political drama over Brexit, said Sunday he has switched allegiances and joined the opposition Labour Party.Bercow was a Conservative member of Parliament for 12 years until being elected in 2009 to the neutral role of Speaker, responsible for running House of Commons business and interpreting its rules of procedure. He enraged the Conservative governments of Prime Minister Theresa May and her successor, Boris Johnson, by giving backbench legislators chances to stymie proposed legislation about the U.K.'s exit from the European Union. He became a hero to opponents of Brexit and a villain to its supporters, and was recognized around the world for his loud ties and even louder calls of "Order!" in the raucous House of Commons.Bercow also was accused during his career of bullying members of his staff, claims he denied. He stepped down in 2019.He insisted he was neutral in his handling of Brexit debates, though after leaving office he called the U.K.'s 2016 vote to quit the EU a historic mistake.Bercow began his political career in the 1980s as a right-wing acolyte of then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but has moved to the left over the years. He angered some on the political right by saying in 2017 that then-President Donald Trump shouldn't be allowed to address Parliament, an honor given to some of his predecessors, including Barack Obama.Bercow is a strong critic of Johnson, a champion of Brexit whose rise has coincided with an exodus of pro-EU politicians from the Conservative Party. Bercow told The Observer newspaper that the Conservatives under Johnson had become "reactionary, populist, nationalistic and sometimes even xenophobic.""The conclusion I have reached is that this government needs to be replaced," he said. "The reality is that the Labour Party is the only vehicle that can achieve that objective."Justice Secretary Robert Buckland rejected the characterization of the party as xenophobic, and said Bercow's decision to forgo political neutrality "actually has the effect of diminishing the force of his voice in politics."
Hello hello! Episode 34 is here, with your hosts Ali and Harry - who are both a bit tired for this one. They cover issues such as re-opening in the UK after lockdown, touch on Bercow moving to the Labour party and go across the pond! Enjoy!

Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/31nQJat Unspeakable is John Bercow's characteristically forthright and incisive account of his unique vantagepoint into British politics. Containing verdicts on many of the leading figures of this era, from Tony Blair to David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson, Bercow explores and explains the ways in which he has sought to democratise the business of Parliament, using the Speakership to champion the rights of backbench MPs and hold the government to account. In his own words, "I made friends and enemies alike, but from start to finish I sought to do the right, rather than the convenient, thing and to be a decent public servant." From the start, Bercow tackles head-on his regretted fascination with definably right-wing attitudes and describes his inexorable march to more progressive thinking since his election as Member of Parliament for Buckingham in 1997. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the business of politics and how our democracy is - or should be - run, with fascinating insights into Bercow's family background and early interest in politics. When Bercow retired as Speaker of the House of Commons on 31st October, he had become one of the most recognisable and iconoclastic figures in British politics, and had created a vacancy of huge importance. As Speaker since 2009 he had a ringside seat during one of the most febrile periods in modern British history, presiding over the Commons while it had to contend with key issues such as austerity in the light of the financial crisis; the coalition government between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats; and of course the most intractable problem of all - how to deliver on the 2016 referendum decision that Britain should leave the EU.

What chance a pre-Christmas general election? And what appetite is there for going to the polls among the parties and the public? Adam Boulton and guests discuss another significant week in Parliament as Boris Johnson's 'do or die' pledge to leave the EU by 31st October looks increasingly unlikely. Is a general election the solution to Brexit? What WILL happen on 31st October is the Speaker John Bercow will stand down and the panel will assess the candidates in the running to succeed him. Joining Adam this week are the trade unionist Eddie Dempsey, the authour of 'Getting By: Estates, Class and Culture in Austerity Britain' Dr Lisa McKenzie and Sky's chief political correspondent Jon Craig.

Speaker Bercow stops Johnson from holding another Brexit vote today: your reaction
A defiant Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Saturday that he would resist attempts to delay Britain's departure from the European Union beyond the end of the month, though he appeared to have no choice but to seek an extension after Parliament postponed a decision on whether to back his Brexit deal.Johnson said he still aimed to meet the Oct. 31 deadline and would tell EU leaders that delaying Brexit is a bad idea. The bloc said it would wait to hear from the British government about what it wanted to do next. A law passed by Parliament last month gives the government until 11 p.m. (6 p.m. EDT) Saturday to send a letter asking the EU for a three-month postponement."I will not negotiate a delay with the EU and neither does the law compel me to do so," Johnson said. "I will tell our friends and colleagues in the EU exactly what I've told everyone in the last 88 days that I've served as prime minister: that further delay would be bad for this country, bad for the European Union and bad for democracy."French President Emmanuel Macron seemed to agree. Macron's office said he spoke to Johnson by phone and insisted on the need for "quick clarification of the British position on the accord." The president's office said Macron indicated to the British prime minister that "a delay would be in no one's interest."At a rare weekend sitting of Parliament, lawmakers voted 322-306 to withhold their approval of the Brexit deal until legislation to implement it has been passed. The vote sought to ensure that the U.K. cannot crash out of the EU without a divorce deal on the scheduled departure date. Johnson, who struck the agreement with the EU earlier this week, said he was not "daunted or dismayed" by the result and would continue to do all he can to get Brexit done in less than two weeks.Parliament's first weekend sitting since the Falklands War of 1982 had been dubbed "Super Saturday." It looked set to bring Britain's Brexit saga to a head , more than three years after the country's divisive decision to leave the EU.But the government's hopes were derailed when House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said he would allow a vote on an amendment to put the vote on the deal off until another day.The amendment makes support for the deal conditional on passage of the legislation to implement it, something that could take several days or weeks. It also gives lawmakers another chance to scrutinize — and possibly change— the Brexit departure terms while the legislation is in Parliament. The government still hopes it can pass the needed legislation by the end of the month so the U.K. can leave on time. The leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg, said the government would hold a debate Monday on its Brexit-implementing legislation — effectively a second attempt to secure approval for the deal. It's unclear whether that would be allowed under House of Commons rules against holding repeated votes on the same question. Bercow said he would make a ruling Monday.Despite Johnson's vow not to "negotiate" a Brexit delay, the government has said it will comply with a law passed by Parliament last month ordering it to request an extension if a deal has not been approved by Saturday.European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted late Saturday: "Waiting for the letter. I just talked to PM @BorisJohnson about the situation after the vote in the House of Commons."British opposition lawmakers warned that Johnson must ask for the Brexit extension or face legal consequences."Any failure of a prime minister who thinks he is above the law — well, prime minister, you'll find yourself in court," said Ian Blackford of the Scottish National Party. The vote was welcomed by hundreds of thousands of anti-Brexit demonstrators who marched to Parliament Square, demanding a new referendum on whether Britain should leave the EU or remain. Protesters, many wearing blue berets emblazoned with yellow stars symbolizing the EU flag, poured out of subways and buse...

Opposition politicians raged Tuesday at Prime Minister Boris Johnson's five-week suspension of Parliament before the deadline for Brexit, which drew angry and unprecedented protests in the House of Commons.Parliament has been prorogued — or suspended — at the government's request until Oct. 14, a drastic move that gives Johnson a respite from rebellious lawmakers as he plots his next move as he tries to lead Britain out of the European Union by Oct. 31.Opposition lawmakers chanted "Shame on you" and held up signs reading "Silenced" as Parliament was formally shut down in the early hours of Tuesday morning. As legislators implored House of Commons Speaker John Bercow not to comply, he expressed his displeasure, saying "this is not a standard or normal prorogation.""It's one of the longest for decades and it represents ... an act of executive fiat," Bercow said. The suspension came after lawmakers inflicted a series of defeats on Johnson's Brexit plans.Johnson says the country must leave the EU at the end of October, with or without a divorce agreement to smooth the way. But many lawmakers fear a no-deal Brexit would be economically devastating, and are determined to stop him.Opposition legislators, backed by rebels in Johnson's Conservative Party, passed a law that compels the government to ask the EU for a three-month delay if no deal has been agreed by Oct. 19."I will not ask for another delay," Johnson said. But he has few easy ways out of it. His options — all of them extreme — include disobeying the law, which could land him in court or even prison, and resigning so that someone else would have to ask for a delay.Legislators also demanded the government release, by Wednesday, emails and text messages among aides and officials relating to suspending Parliament and planning for Brexit amid allegations that the suspension is being used to circumvent democracy.Under parliamentary rules, the government is obliged to release the documents. In a statement, the government said it would "consider the implications of this vote and respond in due course."Then, early Tuesday, lawmakers rebuffed, for a second time, Johnson's request for an early election, which he said was "the only way to break the deadlock in the House."Opposition parties voted against the measure or abstained, denying Johnson the two-thirds majority he needed. They want to make sure a no-deal departure is blocked before agreeing to an election, making a vote before November unlikely.Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn accused Johnson of seeking to crash out of the EU and seek a "one-sided" trade deal with the United States that would damage Britain."A no-deal Brexit is really a Trump-deal Brexit," Corbyn told a union conference,"No-one can trust the word of a prime minister who is threatening to break the law to force through no-deal. So a general election is coming. But we won't allow Johnson to dictate the terms."Johnson has acknowledged that a no-deal Brexit "would be a failure of statecraft" for which he would be partially to blame. He said he believed a deal could be struck by Oct. 18, when leaders of all 28 EU countries hold a summit in Brussels.Ursula von der Leyen, who will replace the current president of the EU's executive branch, Jean-Claude Juncker, in November, said a no-deal Brexit "will be way more difficult than an orderly Brexit."Von der Leyen said Tuesday that the EU is ready for a no-deal Brexit that would see tariffs and other impediments imposed on trade between the bloc and Britain. But she insisted "it's not in our common interest."The EU says Britain has not produced any concrete proposals for replacing the contentious "backstop," a provision in the withdrawal agreement reached by Johnson's predecessor Theresa May that is designed to ensure an open border between EU member Ireland and the U.K.'s Northern Ireland. An open border is crucial to the regional economy and underpins the peace process that ended deca...

On today's podcast we discuss the Tory rebellion over Brexit, accusations that Labour is backtracking over a general election and can Boris Johnson regain control after his first colourful PMQs since becoming Prime Minister?
As predicted, Boris Johnson has decided to end the current parliamentary session (the longest in modern times), and trigger a new Queen’s Speech. Remainists are naturally going crazy, and talking of constitutional outrage. But what does it actually mean for Brexit on 31 October? Is there time for fast-tracked, Bercow-enabled law that would either revoke... The post Proroguing Parliament: What does it really mean for Brexit? appeared first on sounding board.

Brazil's new far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, met with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, furthering the development of their relationship. But not everyone in Latin America's largest nation is applauding. Bolsonaro faced a Twitter storm by domestic detractors, who took to social media — the tool that helped the 63-year-old former army captain get elected last year — to denounce him for allegedly selling out Latin America's largest nation to the Yankees. What's behind the development of this relationship? The speaker of Britain's House of Commons, John Bercow, famous for his erudite put-downs and booming calls for “Order!” in Parliament, threw Prime Minister Theresa May's planned attempt to pass her Brexit deal — on a third try, probably this week — into doubt Monday. Bercow said he would not allow the government to present May's European Union withdrawal agreement to the House again unless that deal was “substantially” different from the first two times it was voted down. The ruling, which overturned May's strategy to revive her Brexit deal at the 11th hour, appeared to blindside 10 Downing Street. How can Britain move forward? Will its fate be decided by those in Belgium?Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) has called for an antitrust investigation into Facebook, in the latest sign of political pressure on the social media giant and the government agencies that regulate it. Cicilline, who chairs the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee's Antitrust Subcommittee, sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission's five commissioners Tuesday, saying the agency should investigate Facebook's acquisitions of rivals Instagram and WhatsApp, its “exclusionary conduct” in relation to former competitors like Vine and its alleged abuses of monopoly power connected to Facebook's “widespread commercial surveillance” of its users. Is this is a sign that the government is actually going to take some action, or is it just more window dressing?
