Today, the Spotlight shines On saxophonist and composer Javon Jackson. Javon sat with us in early October to talk about his film score for the art-world documentary With Peter Bradley, music which came out back in June 2023 on the saxophonist's Solid Jackson Records.Peter Bradley has had a 50-year career as an abstract artist, but one that saw him getting little acclaim until the last few years. In addition to his work as an artist, the daily practice of which is documented in the film, Bradley was a mover and shaker in various mid-late 20th century modern art scenes. His work is interconnected with his love of jazz, to the point that Javon calls Bradley a “musician whose instrument is paint”. The score for the film conjures Bradley's favorite jazz icons — Miles, Coltrane and Jackson's former employer, Art Blakey.I had the opportunity to screen the film before speaking with Javon and I fell in love with the subject, the art and the score. I urge you to check out the music and Peter Bradley's art. Welcome to day 6 of our Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival coverage! Joined per the usual with our Park City Co-Host, John Wildman of Films Gone Wild, we highlight two Slamdance documentaries that are centered around artists: The Mad Writer, and With Peter Bradley. The Mad Writer follows hip-hop phenom and music producer L'Orange as he deals with his clinical depression, in addition to finding mysterious tumors in his ear canals that threaten his future in music. We sat down with director Zach Kashkett, producer Jon Webb, cinematographer Trevor Metscher, and subject L'Orange (aka Austin Hart), as they described what it was like to work together as longtime friends, the difficulties of filming a self-proclaimed recluse, and how important it was for L'Orange to share his struggles with mental illness. In With Peter Bradley, we're introduced into the world of Peter Bradley, a 79-year-old Black abstract artist who hasn't had his own show in an art gallery since 1972. Director Alex Rappoport shares how he was able to record Peter Bradley (his neighbor) during the quarantine, and his decision to keep him as the only person on the screen (other than Peter's cat). And then legendary composer Javon Jackson, explains how he was able to take Peter Bradley's life and art and transform it into a collection of beautiful music.Follow director Zach Kashkett on IGFollow producer Jon Webb on IGFollow cinematographer Trevor Metscher on LinkedInFollow music producer L'Orange on IG & FB & Twitter & SpotifyFollow With Peter Bradley on IG & FB & YouTubeFollow composer Javon Jackson on IG & YouTube & Twitter & Spotify--Thanks for listening and for your support! Directed by Alex Rappoport, WITH PETER BRADLEY is a documentary that centres on Peter Bradley, the first Black arts dealer on Madison Avenue. With an incredible resume, Peter is credited with creating the first integrated modern art show in America (The DeLuxe Show in Houston, TX). Now living in obscurity, Peter still continues to create art and reflect on a career that changed the art world. In this 1on1, we speak to Rappoport about what makes Peter so special, the relationship between music and painting and the reality of political art.

Thank you for listening to the Following Films Podcast today we have a Slamdance double feature with the directors of Underbug and With Peter Bradley. First up I chat with Shujaat Saudagar about The Underbug While nations came to a standstill during the pandemic, another more familiar kind of virus - xenophobia and sectarian violence - raged in India. Against that backdrop, “The Underbug” is a psychological horror that explores the psyche of people who live on the fringe of society. The film focuses on two men, who have stumbled on a deserted house where deadly trauma has clearly taken place, but what happened, who or what was responsible and are they next, are now the questions they need to solve in order to survive. A cinematic sibling to the style of Romero, the film explores radical allegories reflecting relevant cultural and sociopolitical trends in the paranoid, fearful world of his characters. “The Underbug” delivers what great horror cinema does best: sparking conversation and debate, and offering insight on socio-politics in our current world, while keeping us on the edge of our seats with impending dread. After that, I'm joined by Alex Rappoport to discuss his documentary film with Peter Bradley. “With Peter Bradley” is a documentary celebrating artmaking, resilience, and the creative contributions of Black artists to American life. This timely and poignant narrative is unapologetically raw, tender, and emotional as it follows extraordinary trailblazer Peter Bradley. Audiences experience the artists life in real time, interwoven with stills, interviews, and additional striking visual imagery, telling a rags-to-riches to rags-and-back-again story of a truly iconic and innovative artist. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

What would January be without BEHIND THE LENS supporting Slamdance Film Festival and taking a look at some of the films screening in the upcoming festival! And boy have we got a couple of winners for you on this week's show thanks to JOHN HSU talking about STARRING JERRY AS HIMSELF and ALEX RAPPOPORT talking WITH PETER BRADLEY! First up, producer/writer/actor JOHN HSU is live talking about his new film, the documentary STARRING JERRY AS HIMSELF. A contender in the Documentary Feature category at Slamdance, this is a film you've got to see to believe. Filled with heart, joy, sadness, and mystery, the film is a "docu-fiction hybrid that blurs the lines of reality while staying true to the subject and his story." Skillfully edited to tell this unique story, John provides a real insider perspective to the "making of" STARRING JERRY AS HIMSELF; John is Jerry's son and also appears in the documentary. And get ready for a real life twist by film's end. And then, director/cinematographer/editor ALEX RAPPOPORT is on hand discussing his new documentary which is going head-to-head with STARRING JERRY AS HIMSELF in the Slamdance Documentary Feature category – WITH PETER BRADLEY. An intimate documentary portrait of abstract artist Peter Bradley, now age 79, this is a reflection by Bradley on life, on art, his career, and his artistic process. I have long admired some of Bradley's early works from the 1970s but then he kind of disappeared from the canvas until 2021. A truly up close and personal look at an incredible man. Discussing his directorial choices at length for style, development of a through-line, visual approach, use of color, and more, Alex gives us a very interesting discussion on his filmmaking approach not only with WITH PETER BRADLEY, but in general. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

In this episode, we interview Peter Bradley, who was the Labour MP for The Wrekin between 1997 and 2005, about his book ‘The Last Train - A Family History of the Final Solution'. Peter has written, usually on politics, for a wide range of publications, including The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The New Statesman and The New European, but in this interview, he talks at length about his book. It is the profoundly moving and deeply intimate story of one Jewish family's fate in theHolocaust, following the thread from Germany to Latvia and to Britain. It was by accident that Peter as a child discovered that his father, Fred Bradley, was in fact born Fritz Brandes. But it was only after his father's death in 2004 that Peter was able to begin to piece together the family's story and set out on the journey – literally and figuratively – that forms the basis of his book.
