In this inspiring episode of the Holistic Wealth podcast, our special guest is Joy Fox, an 89-year-old solo traveler whose remarkable story has captivated audiences worldwide. Joy's journey, which began with heartbreak and resilience with a broken engagement, has been featured as one of the BBC's top travel stories of 2024. Written by Mia Taylor— a former guest of the Holistic Wealth podcast herself—this story chronicles Joy's incredible adventures and a lifetime of overcoming challenges.  Living Through World War II The turbulence of World War II marked Joy Fox's childhood. Growing up in England, Joy and her family endured constant bombings under Hitler's regime. They were forced to move from house to house to evade danger, often living in one bedroom in fear and uncertainty, these formative years instilled in her a profound sense of resilience. Resources were scarce, and survival was paramount, leaving an indelible mark on how she perceived financial security. Please tune in to this inspiring episode of the Holistic Wealth podcast and discover how Joy continues to inspire generations with her boundless spirit and zest for life in this episode on: Holistic Wealth and Breaking Barriers at Age 89: Solo Travel with World War II Survivor, Joy Fox.  Resources Used In This Episode:  Holistic Wealth Expanded and Updated: 36 Life Lessons to Help You Recover from Disruption, Find Your Life Purpose and Achieve Financial Freedom. Holistic Wealth Personal Workbook  Personal Financial Identity Quiz  Trauma of Money Certification Program  The Move From England to Canada After the war, Joy emigrated from England to Canada, determined to create a new life. There, she met her husband, who became her partner in rebuilding not only their finances but also her trust in abundance. Through his encouragement, Joy began to reframe her relationship with money, gradually healing from the trauma of her wartime experiences. In this episode, Joy also discussed how she took an early retirement from the Ontario Public Service and started her own business. Joy created CansPEP, the Canadian Society of Professional Event Planners out of a need to gather independent planning professionals as a strong group of entrepreneurs. Selling Her Engagement Ring  Joy's journey as a solo traveler began in the most unexpected way: selling her engagement ring after a broken relationship. At just 20 years old, she took the proceeds and embarked on her first trip, traveling from her small village in Wivenhoe, England, to Italy. That journey sparked a lifelong passion for exploration, one that has taken her to countless destinations across the globe. Today, Joy's adventurous spirit remains undeterred. Her solo travels and unrelenting curiosity earned her the prestigious JourneyWoman Evelyn Hannon Award for Solo Travel, celebrating her as a trailblazer for women over 50. As a child, Joy recalled the stories her mother had shared of her voyages to Egypt, China and India with Fox's father, who was a Pipe Major with the Royal Scots. Fox's older brother Alan had often talked of his trips to Venice and the beauty of the city. With those bits. For her 90th birthday this year, Joy has planned another major trip to celebrate this milestone.Taking the Holistic Wealth Personal Financial Identity Quiz Joy recently took the Personal Financial Identity Quiz on the Institute on Holistic Wealth website and identified as a Minimalist - which aligned perfectly with how she has lived her life. For Joy, the quiz reaffirmed the importance of financial resilience and mindful spending, lessons she's carried with her since her wartime upbringing

They offer training to learn to play the bagpipes or drums and will help with choosing the proper instrument. He also explained the significance of their kilt and told us about the sgian-dubh (skee-ən-DOO; Scottish Gaelic pronunciation: [s̪kʲənˈt̪u]) which is part of their traditional Scottish Highland dress along with the kilt.

“That was my problem, I was so afraid that if I took a single day off, I would lose some part of my ability.” - Mike MacIver Welcome to episode 1 of the Simple To Understand (STU) Podcast. This is a special episode not only because it is the first in what I hope will be many episodes to come but also because of who my guest is. My good friend Mike MacIver. I've had the pleasure of knowing Mike for only a short amount of time but in that timeframe we've had many interesting conversations and this one was no exception. At the time of the recording, Mike is a Pipe Major for the Winnipeg Police Pipe Band. With over 25 years experience, he's played the Bag Pipes all over the world including three continents (Canada, Australia and Northern Ireland). He trained more than 3,200 hours in just 3 years leading up to when he played in Grade 1 for the Cullybackey Northern Ireland Pipe Band. Mike and I explore many topics in this episode including: Deep focus and how too much of anything can be a bad thing; The pros and cons of being a perfectionist; How much time and dedication it takes to achieve a high level of success…and then what to do when the fun goes away from your passion; Hunting; Running and the benefits of losing weight; What it’s like to make the shift from being a student to a teacher in bagpiping; How getting comfortable with our inabilities can be beneficial; Hunting; Space; History and the 90’s. Mike shares some of his self talk that helps put things into perspective, “At the end of the day, we’re quite literally just a rock flying around a gigantic nuclear reactor at 20,000 miles/hr...does it matter THAT much if you missed a single grace note in your march Mike?” Fun Fact: The actual speed of the earth flying around the sun is 67,000 mi/hr and you'll have to listen towards the end of the episode to gain context into what the heck we're talking about. Please enjoy! Click Here for this episodes show notes! What was your favourite part of the episode? Is there a specific topic or question you’d like to see Mike and I to dive into next time? What’s up, everybody?! It’s another brewery day today, where Alex and Ryan visit the Van Nuys brewery, Macleod Ale Brewing Company. Started by Jennifer and Alastair Boase, Macleod Ale Brewing Company has an extremely prominent Scottish feel. You’ll often catch patrons sitting on the bar stool with a traditional Scottish kilt on, sipping one of Macleod’s infamous Cask Ales. Jennifer is the Pipe Major of the Pasadena Scottish Pipes, so you’ll often hear the sounds of bagpipes floating through the fermenters. Bagpipes, kilts, and delicious cask ales all make for an incredible cultural experience. During the podcast, we’ll be trying Lost in London Oatmeal Stout, which has notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and toasted bread. In a special 4th of July episode, the guys take it upon themselves to speak for all American pipe bands and declare their independence from the tyranny of the Brits and their archaic way of pipe band life... well sort of. In true Chanter Rant fashion, they get drunk and abandon the revolution and any sense of reality. They then bullshit with special guest Colin Armstrong, Pipe Major of the Los Angeles Scots Pipe Band about god knows what. There is something about the European Championships and the San Diego Highland Games. Eventually, they finally ask Colin some questions about his band. Good luck with this one folks! Brett here -- The Transcona and District Pipe Band reached out to me because they're having a hard time getting kids interested in joining the band, and KEEPING them interested. That got me thinking... Is it harder today to get young people involved or excited in activities that might be seen as more traditional? Or has that always been the case with each generation of kids, that they maybe don't want to partake in traditions because something they perceive to be more exciting has caught their attention? We're joined by Ryan Stewart, the Pipe Major with the Transcona and District Pipe Band.

Today's show is brought to you by Celtic Invasion Vacations If you are listening to this podcast then you probably dream of traveling to Ireland or Scotland. So I have one piece of advice. Do it! I'm not saying you should join me on one of my Celtic Invasion Vacations. I'm not saying you should join another tour group. But travel. Go. Right now. Mark Twain wrote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." There was no greater evidence of this for me than when I took my one and a half old daughter to Ireland in 2012. You could almost see a mind explosion as her linguistic and mental skills grew through our travels. It is the same with adults. Traveling to Ireland or Scotland, or wherever, will change your life for the better forever. Stop waiting for the "right moment". Start planning now.
