Send us a textEver feel like you're just not a "routines person"? Before you blame yourself, listen in. In this episode of the Real Happy Mom Podcast, we're breaking down five reasons why your routines aren't sticking—and none of them have to do with your motivation or willpower. If you've ever tried someone else's perfect system and felt like a failure, this is your reminder: it's not you, it's the routine. What You'll Learn:Why most routines are built for ideal conditions (and what to do instead). How to build a routine that fits your energy, season, and lifestyle. Why flexibility—not perfection—is the secret to consistency.3 Takeaways:Make It Fit Real Life: Routines built on someone else's perfect day won't survive real-life interruptions. Yours should bend with your season, not break at the first challenge.Keep It Simple + Flexible: Small, repeatable routines—like a 10-minute tidy or 3-step morning reset—are more effective than rigid, overwhelming systems. You're Not the Problem—The System Might Be: You don't need more discipline—you need tools that support you, not stress you out. A Trello board or 3 go-to dinners might be your real secret weapon.Links & Resources Mentioned:

Send us a textAre our children spending too much time in the digital world and missing out on real-life experiences? What happens when we prioritize screens over face-to-face connections? These are the questions at the heart of my conversation with Katherine Martinko, author of "Childhood Unplugged: Practical Advice to Get Kids Off Screens and Find Balance.”Katherine shares her unconventional upbringing in rural Ontario—homeschooled on a remote lakefront property with no television or internet—and how it shaped her approach to raising her own children in our hyper-connected world. Her perspective offers a refreshing counterpoint to prevailing parenting trends, as she and her husband have chosen to raise their children with limited and regulated tablets, smartphones, or television. The conversation explores what Jonathan Haidt calls "the great rewiring of childhood"—that perfect storm when high-speed internet, smartphones, and social media collided with parental fears about "stranger danger", over-busy family lives and addictive devices that have social media. Katherine shares shocking statistics: children ages 8-12 now average 5.5 hours of entertainment screen time daily, while teenagers log nearly 9 hours—not including school-related tech use.We also challenge common assumptions about technology and safety. Is a smartphone-equipped but distracted child truly safer than one who's fully present and aware of their surroundings? Katherine recounts how teens without phones navigate public transit more safely because they remain vigilant about potential dangers rather than absorbed in screens. For parents feeling overwhelmed, Katherine offers practical strategies for every age group: establishing tech boundaries early with young children, implementing family "tech Sabbaths," using simpler devices for older kids, and "fixing your analog life" by creating homes rich with books, craft supplies, and opportunities for creative play. Her message is empowering: parents have the right to say no, set limits, and change course as new information emerges about technology's impact on developing brains.Ready to help your children find balance in a screen-saturated world? Listen now and discover how unplugging might be the greatest gift you can give your family.

We’ll get into it on today’s “Marketplace Tech Bytes: Week in Review.” Plus, Trump floats tariffs on semiconductors from overseas. And a bipartisan Senate bill to ban kids from social media is getting another look. But first, back to that DeepSeek drama. DeepSeek claims it spent only $6 million on compute power — at least 16 times less than leading U.S. companies. Marketplace's Meghan McCarty Carino spoke with Paresh Dave, senior writer at Wired, about all these topics for this week's Tech Bytes.

It's hosted by Julian Saavedra, an assistant principal in Philadelphia who has spent nearly 20 years working in public schools. There's no point in avoiding it: kids' meals these days are not healthy! They're full of ultra-processed ingredients that are not nutritionally balanced to give our kids what they need to grow healthy and strong. From book bans to chronic absenteeism to phone distractions, it's a hard time to be a teacher. But amidst all the challenges, there's something surprising happening among math teachers. Some of them say they're more excited to go to work than ever before. Why? Because of a new approach to teaching math called “thinking classrooms” that has students up out of their seats and engaged in problem-solving. In this episode, MindShift listeners will hear a thinking classroom in action and reflections from the teacher and her students. Listeners also will learn about this model from the researcher who developed it, Peter Liljedahl.

Millions of American children are regularly skipping class. It is a problem educators have faced for years, but the issue has gotten much worse since the pandemic. Today, some estimate that nearly one in three students are “chronically absent,” meaning they miss more than 10 percent of the school year. Now, educators around the country are facing the question of what to do about it. Alec MacGillis is a reporter for ProPublica who focuses on gun violence, economic inequality, and the pandemic-era schools crisis. He recently wrote about chronic absenteeism for The New Yorker and joins Diane to talk about what he learned.
