Marine ecotourism provides economic benefits for humans, and is a good alternative for marine species that migh otherwise be hunted, like many dolphin and whale species. However, there are still negative effects that can have long-term consequences for a species' survival. Increased vessel traffic creates a noisy enviornment, increases risk of vessel strike, and can cause changes to behavior and activity budgets. These can directly hurt the animals, but can also cause indirect effects (like reduced time foraging, or reduced reproduction) that can accumulate and negatively impact the long-term survival. It is important that we understand where the balance lies between what we need/want to do, and the needs of the animals. This paper is a great example of using long-term data to show what the problem is and articulate what we should be doing into the future to strike that balance so that both humans and dolphins can coexist. This paper looks at changes in the number of cruise ships and people going into a harbor in New Zealand and correlates that with changes observed in Hector's dolphins sighting rates and distribution pattern. It is an excellent example of how long-term monitoring is vital to being able to identify when changes occur, why the are occurring, and gives us the tools we need to be able to act in real-time for the health of the ecosystem that the humans and dolphins rely on. Jene has a glitter episode, and he's not happy about it.Christmas is over, and it couldn't be soon enough for me, says Jene. Jerry explains how he and his wife determined their daughter's religion by coaxing her between the Minora and the Christmas tree. Why don't we do a Podcast Cruise in Europe that would involve us, several roots music artists and paid cruisers. We could do some shows from the boat with our on-board listeners as audience. Not sure it will ever happen, but the technical crew from Ambient Studios would be thrilled!Jerry's rant: The FBI is investigating President Trump as a possible traitor. Your Favorite Podcast Events – Episode 162 This week, I wanted to review your favorite podcast events. I put out the call for suggestions. Most replies that I received said, "Erik, I haven't attended any podcast events." That's a shame. There are quite a few great gatherings that can really help you grow. BENEFITTING FROM EVENTS There were a few suggestions. I also received an e-mail from Cynthia, who was really dejected after attending a conference. Dear Erik, I actually attended the National Religious Broadcasters Convention twice hoping to find a way to boost my show and possibly find a radio station that would want to pick it up. Sadly, I spent a lot of money, but didn't feel I was able to justify the expense. I was looking for people who were interested in helping me, but all I met were people looking for people who could enrich themselves. It wasn't a total waste because some of the sessions were informative and educational. However, I didn't have one contact that materialized into anything lasting. I may have found some guests, but they were just "one time guests". I appreciate your ideas of how to have a real conversation with others for a lasting impact. Podcasting can feel very lonely. I don't have a team working with me. There will always be people who want to have us buy their services, but there's not much to buy until we have a funding stream. Sincerely, Cynthia Home Front www.CynthiaDavis.net GIVE FIRST When you attend an event, I think you need to approach it differently. Seek to give. Seek to help. What you send out will return to you. Cynthia, it is time for some tough love. You say you were "looking for people who were interested in helping me, but all I met were people looking for people who could enrich themselves." You mention that you "didn't have one contact that materialized into anything lasting. I may have found some guests, but they were just 'one time guests'". Rarely do people go to events wondering, "Hmm. Who can I help today." That means you can stand out and be unique by asking that very question. You can have a real conversation with others for lasting impact by seeking to help them. Talk about them. Discover their struggles. Where you can you help them succeed. The theory of reciprocity will naturally take effect. People will be more open to helping you if you first help them. However, don't expect reciprocity. Let it happen organically, and don't be upset if it doesn't. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. MY UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP Being in radio for nearly 30 years, I have attended many, many conferences. I have attended conferences for radio, podcasting, coaching hockey and others. The opportunity to learn and grow excites me. My first conference came when I was in college. As the Music Director of the college radio station (and a member of a rap group), I attended the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City put on by the College Music Journal. It was the summer of 1989. October 26th at the Vista Hotel in New York City at the foot of the World Trade Center. George Clinton and Ice-T were the keynote speakers. I had a great chat with Ice-T in the lobby of the hotel. One of my most bizarre relationships began at the CMJ Music Marathon that year. Each night during the conference, there would be music showcases all around town. Most were free with your conference pass. Doc and I grabbed a cab and went to NYU to see a hip-hop show. Doc was the other half of my rap duo. Yep. True story. On the bill that night were quite a few artists. Third Bass, Black Sheep, Young Black Teenagers and others performed. Heavy D. was in the audience checking out the show. The Geto Boys even tried to get up on stage at the end of the show before the sound guy cut their mics. Third Bass was made up of MC Serch, Prime Minister Pete Nice and DJ Richie Rich. Third Bass was also notable as one of the first, successful, interracial hip-hop groups. "Pop Goes The Weasel" was the biggest single of Third Bass' career. They also had a minor hit with "The Gas Face" from "The Cactus Album". It was their first album, which the group had just released a month after this concert. On my show on the college station, I had been playing Third Bass for a few months by this time. Their first single was a tune called "Steppin' To The A.M." It sampled Pink Floyd's "Time". I played the tune a lot on the radio at a time when rap and hip-hop were not part of the mainstream. This was 1989. My airplay helped the song climbed to #5 on the U.S. Rap Chart in some small way. Jump ahead 17 years to 2006. By this time I was the Program Director of a Top 40 radio station. Third Bass had broken up for a second time 6 years earlier. MC Serch had left his job as a morning radio host to work full-time at Serchlite Music, a promotion company he ran. Serch was calling radio stations to talk to Program Directors and trying to convince them to play particular singles. I happen to be one of his weekly calls. During our first call, Serch tells me my name sounds familiar. Johnson isn't the most unique name, so I figure he is just trying to be friendly. He asks where I have worked in the past, that maybe our paths had crossed before. Unlike many in the business, my radio career had not taken me all over the country. I had worked in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska at this point in my career. That is what I told Serch. We got to talking about my start at the college station in Lincoln. I told him I started one of the first shows dedicated to rap and hip-hop in the state. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That is when it happened. Serch said, "That's it! You were a huge supporter for us back then!" I said, "Oh, yeah. I played the crud out of 'Steppin' To The A.M.' I loved that record." That's when Serch said, "Yeah, you did. We thanked you in the credits of that album for all of your support." What!?! I'm in the liner notes? How did I not know this? I said, "Are you kidding me? I didn't know that." "You bet," he told me. "You were a big part of getting us off the ground." That night, I went home and got out my "Cactus Album" CD. Sure enough, there I was in the liner notes. I had made a connection and difference at that conference 17 years earlier and hadn't even realized it. And that's my point. When you are at a conference, you never know what might happen or who you might meet. The meeting may not mean anyting at the time. It may not make a difference in the next decade. However, it may just change somebody's life in ways you never intended. When you are at a gathering, seek to give and help first. It will all come back around. Cynthia did say, "It wasn't a total waste because some of the sessions were informative and educational." So, where can you find podcast events to make meaningful connections? SOME OF THE TOP PODCAST EVENTS Many people who responded to my ask haven't attended podcasting events. This is a list I have gathered from a few of the best podcasting minds in the industry. I have attended a few of these. I also received recommendations from Dave Jackson at School of Podcasting and Daniel J. Lewis at The Audacity To Podcast and Podcasters' Society. Ticket prices and info are as accurate as I could find as of this date. All are subject to change and the accuracy is not guaranteed by any means. Please visit the site for complete details, as they change quite often. The idea was to bring podcasters together for meet ups, Google Hangouts and eventually grow into conferences. This week, we had the first of two exciting episodes about Jennifer’s return trip to DL/DCA after nearly 10 years - but encountered technical difficulties! So, Lisa sat down to share her last minute thoughts on Dr. Strange (which she saw today in D Box/3D/XD) and her (low) expectations for the upcoming Podcast Cruise 6.0 (although she does want to be new BFFs with Kathy & Teresa). For tons of RCCL info, check out Matt Hochberg’s amazingly detailed and fabulous blog and podcast. How can we wish WDW Today back to life??? I digress. I hope everyone voted. www.thosedarncats.net

Three nil, job done (again) and the lads are here with an Ipswich fan to talk through what went right anxs wrong for each team.
Hi, Curvists! I really need to update you all on what's going on! There was no episode last week. (Eek!!) Well, there was a reason for that named Hurricane Matthew. So, I wanted to share with you all what is going on and what is coming up, including a new direction I am taking the podcast in. So, I'm excited to get into it!! I am working to reschedule with Jared Easely, founder of the Podcast Movement annual conferences and something called the Podcast Cruise, which I have no idea what it is, but it sounds amazing, and I can't wait to talk to him. I know a lot of you were particularly excited for that episode. We were supposed to record just before his podcast MeetUp of the Podcast South Florida a couple of Saturdays ago on the 8th. But, the venue had to cancel the event, due to the hurricane. So, that of course meant my podcast with him that was supposed to happen right beforehand has to now be rescheduled. So, we are working that out. Local small biz and digital marketing powerhouse, Kate Volman was to be on as well. She's a content creator and web show host who is on her way to taking over south Florida. She helps businesses share their stories as part of their marketing efforts, is super smart, and a lot of fun. But, we are having to reschedule, again because of things being just thrown off course, lol. But, both of those episodes are still coming up! So, because of recent events, I wanted to share with you a lesson I have learned about keeping my priorities in check. I am a big-time planner. Between my marketing company and clients and growing that, this podcast, my Podcast Network and sister shows, and the Palm Beach Podcasters, my to do list is gargantuan. So, I HAVE to be a big-time planner and schedule as much as possible weeks in advance. For the most part, this is a one-woman show. So, if I don't do it, it doesn't get done. I'm currently considering ways of reducing that workload, but that's for a whole other conversation. AND, I'm (most importantly, and as many of you know) also a single mom to a beautiful 4&1/2 year-old little boy, Jordon--my angel and whole heart. So, as you can imagine, he comes first, everything else comes second, friends and family get peppered throughout as much as I can, and then my needs usually come last. My plate is simply crazy-full! I had already put on pause pretty much all of my duties as the social media person behind the KVJ Show's fan accounts, KVJNation, because something had to give. I mean, that should tell you right there the fullness of my plate right now, if I've temporarily set aside something that I love that much. So, my cup already runneth over, and my body was suffering the consequences. Lack of sleep and healthier eating coupled with more stressors than I could speak of (all good things, but come on, let's get real, still stressful, right?), September turned into the Month of the Migraine, with my having more days WITH these debilitating headaches than not. In fact, at one point, I was in the fetal position for about a day and a half. It was awful. With everything suddenly being thrown off by the massive Hurricane Matthew having this area in its crosshairs, my schedule was thrown out the window, I had to scramble to get hurricane-ready because I had to make sure Jordon was well set, I had to set some clients up for the hurricane because, yes, hurricanes impact marketing efforts, too. So, everything was suddenly just completely nuts and unpredictable. After getting myself and my clients hurricane-ready, I still had so much more on my plate--even more than usual because of the total disruption that is a major hurricane. I had a choice to make, a fork in the road, so to speak. Have a complete panic-induced meltdown, or just accept it for the opportunity it was: the chance to relax. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of the hustle itself, we get so caught in the momentum--especially when great things are happening, that we lose sight of the bigger picture. We pursue our dreams, ultimately, in the pursuit of happiness, right? Well, if my body is screaming at me that it needs rest, and that message is being delivered in the form of relentless migraines, mama is NOT happy. I looked around my room. With plywood covering the windows for the hurricane, it was like a cave--a perfect little recuperative nest free of light. So, once it was clear we had been spared by Matthew (thank GOD!!), I had Jordon spend a couple of days with his dad, so I could spend a couple of days under covers with an ice pack on my neck to knock out my migraine once and for all. I succumbed, and it was definitely the right decision. Not only did I reenergize, but it gave me a chance to step back and see the forest--not just the trees I was usually caught up in. I thought through how to move forward while making my rest more of a priority. So, I've taken some time to concentrate now on just finishing getting EHAH, a new podcast project off the ground. It's something some friends of mine and I have just recently launched where we talk about putting tech into our community and the community into our tech. But, getting it rolling has been a massive responsibility. And, being able to focus on finishing that rollout now while taking advantage of this gap in Curve the Cube, has taken a load of the pressure off! So, if you like tech talk, please had to EggHeadsAHP.com and subscribe to us in iTunes. In fact, the aforementioned Kate Volman is one of my Egg Head cohosts. So, that podcast can give you an intro into my upcoming Curve the Cube episode with her! I have also made a decision with CTC that I hope you will all find interesting and appealing. I have decided to spend more episodes doing exactly what I'm doing now--sharing my own Curve the Cube journey. Since this podcast started as being all about inspiring people to pursue their dreams by talking to other people who are doing just that and has sprouted a shunt to this parallel story of me curving my own cube, I decided to start doing just what I'm doing here: sharing more of my own journey to curving my own cube. In episode 93, my amazing compadres, Scotty Fusion and Jessica Prestige, helped by cohosting and asking me a bunch of questions from themselves and some listeners. And, I think I caught a bug for it in that episode and really just want more personal interaction and conversation with you guys, my fellow Curvists, about what it is to pursue your dreams--stuff my guests have taught me about that pursuit and what I've been learning here as I navigate my own. In fact, on episode 4 of EHAH, which comes out October 25th, I talk a little bit about a recent decision I made on whether or not to archive my early episodes of Curve the Cube and why or why not. So, that was an interesting thought process I shared there. So, this slightly evolved structure will help me stress less about my guest scheduling and concentrate more on bringing better quality in overall content and audio. So, by adding in interviews with myself, it should help me be able to slow down and give better focus on post-production. But, have no fear! I am continuing to bring you great traditional CTC content, and once episodes start back up in the next week or two, I'll be back to posting episodes every week! In addition to the rescheduled guests, I also have other super inspiring people lined up to motivate you to find your passion and do your thing, too! Jennifer McGrath She is the Director of Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper, a local non-profit that raises money to help those fighting ovarian cancer who are experiencing financial difficulty. And, she has a unique story of her own for why she is passionate about helping others with ovarian cancer. Tami Stronach If you're anywhere NEAR as big of a fan as I am of my FAVORITE movie of all time, The Neverending Story, then you will LOVE hearing me chat with Tami. I mean, it's not everyday you get to talk to a childlike empress! Unnamed!! And, to add one more to the list, I am waiting on confirmation back from a very, let's just say, special kind of matchmaker. I can't say her name, yet, because she is waiting for approval back from her manager. But, she thinks it's likely; so, keep your fingers crossed!! (Wow, I just realized this is a list full of ladies. Go, girl power!!) I am also in very early talks to get a sitdown with aerial reporter, Johann Hoffend of WPTV's Chopper 5, and Jerry Soma, who puts on the Feast of Little Italy every year, no small task!! So, like I said, loads of great stuff coming, guys. So, no worries, friends!! In the meantime, shuffle back through the old episodes. I know some of you have missed some great guests! All of the other Egg Heads (Eddy Garcia, Aaron Wormus, and Joe Russo, have all been featured previously on Curve the Cube. I've had conversations with former pro-wrestler Glenn Ruth aka Thrasher of the Headbangers, actors from the Blacklist and Bloodline, the president of Nerdist Industries, hosts of the KVJ Show, Representative Lois Frankle,... I mean, just some really, really fascinating people! I've had lots of other greatly inspirational Curvists on, too--from musicians to artists, entrepreneurs to writers, and so much more in between!! And, I've had really meaningful conversations with people like my friend, Drew, who shared his very personal story of gender reassignment, and my friend, Sharif, who shared insights into his Islamic faith. And, of course, I CAN'T forget my Pod Squad with regular co-hosts, Jay Cintron and Scotty Fusion. We talk about all sorts of funny stuff, and you can find those episodes organized for you right on CTCPodSquad.com. So, all in all, there is a great big backlog of nearly 100 episodes for you to listen back to as I get some great new content and these fantastic new guests all lined up. Remember to keep pursuing your own dreams. Do not give up or get discouraged. Dig in, work hard, but, don't miss the forest for the trees. Find Your Passion... Do Your Thing!!
