This idea is a simple on really. Gather some very talented designers, place them around a table, drop the topic, hit the little red button and see what happens. This is the idea I came up with in 2017 after years of attending industry events and leaving with a sense of disappointment that the formal conversations didn't yield the same amazing dialogue that the informal ones did. When creatives come off the stage, the audience leaves and they are just chatting amongst themselves, it was pure gold. I wanted to capture that. We hold these events regularly at Design Hardware. We record them and publish them to Doctoring Up Design, the official podcast of Design Hardware. We gathered on February 29th, in partnership with ASID-LA, we gathered some amazing creatives to discuss the rapidly changing nature of the design industry and how the rapid changes and evolving tastes are changing the game. You are going to hear an open and honest conversation, the likes of which you rarely hear. Which is exactly why we do this. The ASID - Los Angeles ChapterThe following conversation features;Cheryl Vines | Mesa Design GroupJaqueline Steinberg | Eve Mode Design @JackieSteinbergLenora Mahle | Mahle Design @LenoraMahleMark Cutler | Cutler Schulze @CutlerSchulzeJuliette Schatan-van der Meijden | Curated by Juliette @CuratedbyJulietteNicole Schulze | Cutler Schulze @CutlerSchulzePhilip Nielsen | Nielsen Dye @NielsenDyeWe are talking about important issues that include; How has the business of design changed in a post-pandemic environment The rise of virtual and remote design Design transitions and changing tastes The design shows and events. Is the industry keeping up with advanced specifiers needs Color, materiality and performance. How have manufacturers responded to the needs of the trade Sustainability and wellness. Do clients like to just talk about it or do they really care Catalogues and samples. Addressing waste in the industry Modern uses for traditional materials Client relationships are of greater importance now Manufacturer, supplier, showroom and vendor relationships are more important now. There is a shortage of great partners Sketch and vision. Adding value to design services by showcasing the possibilities. AI is a major new skill set Doctoring Up Design is the official podcast of Design Hardware and was created to address the pain points affecting the design and architecture community. Diagnosing these issues and providing practical insights to address them, that is our mission. Today we are talking about the 5th wall, which we define as the ceiling. It's a controversial thing because some people consider the floor to be the 5th wall and the ceiling as the 6th, but that's not what we think. The ceiling is something we strongly feel can really set rooms apart in design, and create a lot of energy and magic surrounding what's happening up above the head. Join us as we discuss the various ways we've incorporated the 5th wall into our many projects we've done over the years.    Worst or funniest gift you've been given 2:45 The 5th wall 12:00 Aligning with existing architecture 21:50 Paint 24:25 Finish work 26:15 Barbie house project 31:20   “We had ceilings with a lot of eaves in it. This is Tan France's closet and after setting this for quite some time, you can see the wall height didn't start until way down here, like 2 and a half feet, so we're all pitches and it only made sense to treat the ceiling like the wall and wrap that entire room in stripes. It felt tented, and then we were able to bring in a mirror that went 2 stories up from the stairwell and bounced back all of that around the space.” 18:48   https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/ https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/ https://alicelanehome.com/ https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHome https://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/ https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecity News Letter:  https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5

Created For Creatives | A Podcast by the London International Awards

Craftsmanship and its connection to the consumer was a recurring topic at LIA 2022 and in the Design and Package Design Jury it was a key-criteria as the jury considered the usability of packaging that was presented. Host Tom Eymundson sat down with Cinthia Wen, Head of Creative at Turner Duckworth in San Francisco and Alexander Schill, Global Chief Creative Officer and Partner at Serviceplan in Germany, who were both on LIA's 2022 Design and Package Design jury. Cinthia and Alex shared their journey of how they ended up on their career paths, talked about the 2022 work entered, what makes great leadership, presenting ideas to clients, changes and trends they saw in Design and Package Design and what excited them in the jury room. Alexander Schill, says, “Empathy is the key to everything to be.a good leader. You need empathy to put together the right teams. You have to have empathy to understand the problem of the client and you have to understand the consumer.” Cinthia expands on this when it comes to presenting to clients and says that it's ok when a client says no. She goes on to give advice that sometimes you have to co-create with a client; let them help build upon your team's idea to make it fit within their needs. Alex and Cinthia discussed their jury criteria and both agreed that usability is very important. Consumers need to understand the product and is it easy to use. Design can be beautiful and creative, but the product must be able to communicate what is contained within. They also talked about the work in the room and they both touched upon (no pun intended) missing physical entries in Package Design as it is missing the physical touch which is helpful when judging the work. Alexander Schill states that “you have to teach young creatives to invest time and talent and passion into the craftsmanship. Investing in craftmanship makes the difference, especially in package design.” Lastly, they talked about Design in a virtual world and the trend of content being socially responsible. You were so excited about all of the design ideas that you had, you were loving life as a crochet or knit pattern designer, and now you're stuck. You're in a creative slump and feeling completely unmotivated. And chances are you're only making it worse for yourself because you're dwelling on it, getting frustrated, and trying to force the creativity. I'm sorry, friend, but that's just not going to work. So let's talk about what will work! In this podcast episode, I talk all about five sources of endless pattern design inspiration. It's already around you and within you - you just have to be open and attentive to it. But maybe the problem isn't so much that you can't find the inspiration, but more that you don't take the time for it. Beth (the crochet pattern designer behind Fig & Filament) and I created something just for you! 52 Weeks of Creativity sends a unique design prompt to you once a week. Just spend thirty minutes each week responding to the creative prompt, and a year from now you will have over 50 new pattern design ideas! We're excited to see what new pattern designs you create. (And yes, I promise these prompts are totally different than a magazine call for submissions! Instead of trying to guide you to a specific style and theme, we're encouraging to follow your own interests and intuition. I know you'll love it.) In this episode I also mentioned the Design Challenges, which are similar to the 52 Weeks of Creativity design prompts, hosted inside the Pattern Design Circle. The Design Circle is a community filled with enthusiastic knit and crochet pattern designers focused on growing their businesses and connecting with fellow designers.Join the Pattern Design Circle today: snickerdoodleknits.com/design-circle

Biomimicry- design ideas inspired by Nature | Ep. #44

Circular Business Podcast

I have a pet dog and he loves the abundance of nature around the place we are currently put up. Yesterday night when we both were out on a walk there was a blackout in the city therefore I couldn't collect his poop due to lack of sight. Today morning when I went back, I observed how active the soil is, because the area where he had shit was already taken care of by nature. More than 50% of his poop was granulated into soil. Guys I'm not encouraging anybody to not clear your dog's poop, please do it, it is a good practice; however why I brought this up is to dive deeper into biomimicry. When we stay close to nature, we frequently get the opportunity to witness such natural processes, socho na, every day nature is continuously manufacturing and producing something new, yet forests have no landfill and oceans have no waste water. Since ages humans have been cooking food however have you ever thought about cooking Nature's recipe of making natural products? Materiom just does that. They provide open source recipes and data on materials made from abundant sources of natural ingredients, like agricultural waste. By making this knowledge open, they wish to accelerate materials development and lower barriers to entry in materials markets around the world. Alysia Garmulewicz is co-founder and director of Materiom. She is an Associate Professor of the circular economy at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. Her research and entrepreneurial endeavors take place at the intersection of circular economy, open source biomaterials, and digital fabrication, paving the way for truly regenerative and distributive systems. For her doctoral thesis, she looked at Fab Labs around the world and interviewed Fab Labs leaders to understand where the materials were coming from and what knowledge about materials existed at a local level. She found a large gap in people's access to knowledge about materials. People had expertise and understanding in software and hardware but when it came to materials, they were ordering them on retail platforms. So then, how do we make distributed manufacturing future connect to supply chain networks that are fully in tune with the local environment?
