So, if you're reading these show notes I'm going to go ahead and make the assumption that you know about the Pulse nightclub shooting that happened in Orlando in 2016. And I'm also going to assume that you've heard some of the stories from survivors and families of victims about the impact of that night. But, now that we're a few years on and people's attention has moved elsewhere what happens to those feelings that are sitting there for people that were impacted by that night? What if Pulse was your safe space? How do you move on whilst never forgetting the importance of that space? Well, for actor / writer JJ Ivey, who turned up to Pulse every Tuesday for karaoke night, there are still a mix of emotions. They're obviously really grateful for what that space facilitated for them, but they're still figuring out how to grieve it properly. What I appreciated most about this week's conversation is that JJ was really open about some of the messiness of their emotions and how they are continuing to make sense of something that will never make sense... The mean gay phase may stem from fear and the pressure to be perfect. It's important to be aware of our actions and considerate of others in public spaces. Pulse Orlando provided a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for JJ Ivey, marking a shift in their mean and sassy gay phase. Exploring drag allowed JJ to discover their non-binary identity and embrace different aspects of their gender expression. Finding a group of friends who accepted and supported their authentic self was crucial for JJ's personal growth and happiness. Gender euphoria, rather than dysphoria, can be a valid and important aspect of one's gender identity. Self-discovery is a lifelong journey, and it's never too late to learn more about yourself. Tragedies like the Pulse nightclub shooting can have a profound impact on individuals and communities, challenging their sense of safety and forcing them to confront their own mortality. It's important to embrace the good in people and build connections with others, even in the face of tragedy and uncertainty. Finding strength in community and supporting one another can help navigate the challenges and complexities of life. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/k-anderson/message

Four years after the Stonewall Inn Uprising, and 49 years ago today, there was an arson attack at Upstairs Lounge, a gay bar in New Orleans, LA. The event was the worst fire in New Orleans' history, and the deadliest attack on the LGBTQIA+ community in American history until the mass shooting at Pulse Orlando in 2016. Thirty-two people were killed and many more gravely injured as the Upstairs Lounge burned in 1973.Writing and research by Aurora Cady.Original music and audio production by Louis Levesque. For inquiries: louis14levesque@gmail.comTrue Crime Headlines: 3:57Pride Celebration: 8:42Arson at UpStairs Lounge: 12:27F O L L O W U S ! ! !I N S T A G R A M -- @murdermurdernewsT W I T T E R -- @mmurdernewsF A C E B O O K -- https://www.facebook.com/mmntruecrime/T I K T O K -- @murdermurdernewsY O U T U B E -- MurderMurder NewsJoin our Facebook Group | to chat about true crime, and to join our virtual book club!Join us on the Picnic app | to chat with us about the cases that fascinate you!Use our link to sign up for 25% off Nuna - Our fave app for mental well-being!Check out MurderMurder.news for the latest breaking true crime news! For business inquiries: murdermurdernews@gmail.comSubmit a spooky story: https://murdermurder.news/story-submission-form/---LINKS + SOURCES:https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/36236137-tinderboxhttps://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14548906-let-the-faggots-burn?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=VZhzOoKXYR&rank=1 Upstairs Inferno:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3088882/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots#:~:text=The%20Stonewall%20riots%20(also%20known,the%20Greenwich%20Village%20neighborhood%20of https://www.history.com/topics/gay-rights/the-stonewall-riots https://www.huffpost.com/entry/louisiana-police-sting-gay-men-anti-sodomy-law_n_3668116https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/26/us/marsha-p-johnson-biography/index.htmlhttps://stevenwarranresearch.blogspot.com/2014/08/where-is-mother-paupers-grave-is-near.htmlhttps://exhibits.lgbtran.org/exhibits/show/upstairs-lounge-firehttps://southernspaces.org/2022/beer-prayer-and-nellydrama-impossibilities-max-vernons-view-upstairs/ Support the show

Hello everyone. The winter holidays and New Year's are coming up and I just hope that wherever you are, you are able to spend some time with your friends and loved ones. It can be hard these days even to do that, so cherish those moments. I have only one last episode to share with you before the end of the year, which is also the last episode from the Rogers Art Loft series that I conducted this past summer. Don't worry, I will see you all in January. So without further ado, I want to present Dr. Erika Abad, a Queer Latina poet, born and raised in Chicago. Dr. Abad received her BA in Latin American and Latina/o Studies from DePaul University and her Ph.D. in American Studies from Washington State University. Prior to her move to Las Vegas, Dr. Abad was an oral historian for the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, Hunter College. Beyond Puerto Rican, Latinx, and Gender Studies, she is a well-published essayist, poet, and fiction writer, most recently writing a poem and creative reflection on the Pulse-Orlando tragedy. She is also a regular writer for Women in Higher Education. Erika and I chat about writing during difficult times, giving feedback to students without minimizing their experiences, queer fandom, and being mindful. This was a live-recorded event that was hosted by the wonderful Lance Smith of the Rogers Art Loft. Until next year, stay safe and healthy and have a wonderful winter holiday.Links Mentioned:Erika's InstagramErika's TwitterLove, VictorAnna CastilloTato LavieraIn Other Words Feminist Community CenterSinister Wisdom 117: Lesbians in the CityDennis McBride - LGBTQ Las VegasLin-Manuel MirandaPoseVidaVisions of UsFollow Seeing Color:Seeing Color WebsiteSubscribe on Apple PodcastsFacebookTwitterInstagram

Peter Boykin Speaks At Greensboro NC City Council About Trumps Acknowledgement Of #LGBTPRIDE Month #MarchForTrump #AmericanPride #GayPride I'm at City Council in Greensboro NC to give my monthly speech to trigger the left .. here is my speech. “As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals.....on the basis of their sexual orientation. My Administration has launched a global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality and invite all nations to join us in this effort!”These words came straight out of the mouth of Donald Trump, a man the leftist gay community would have you believe is a homophobe. This is the same person who at the 2016 Republican National Convention, Trump promised "to do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens. ... Believe me." The same man who is EVERYONES President that also not only worked to comfort and support those with HIV from as far back as the 1980’s and who has recently in May tweeted these words “Great news today: My Administration just secured a historic donation of HIV prevention drugs to help expand access to PrEP for the uninsured and those at risk. Will help us achieve our goal of ending the HIV epidemic in America!”This being June, and Pride Month I want EVERYONE to know in this city that many people in the Republican party just as much as Trump does, shows, and acts on it that we all support the WHOLE community, which includes it’s #LGBTQ !Last Friday, Donald Trump became the first Republican president in American history to acknowledge LGBT Pride Month. This came two and a half years after he entered office as the first president of either party in American history to fully support marriage equality. These are facts – not fake news – and they represent a fundamental shift in the acceptance of gays and lesbians in the Republican Party.Democrats didn’t want Trump to acknowledge LGBT Pride Month at all. They’d rather not have gay and lesbian voters know that this White House is spearheading an initiative to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide, led by U.S. Ambassador to Germany my friend Ric Grenell, the highest-ranking openly gay man currently serving in the Trump administration. This same left didn’t want you to know is that there are wide swaths of gay and lesbian Americans who want the same things as their straight counterparts: border security, limited government, a strong military, and the tools to create wealth. These gays and lesbians support an administration that stands strong against terror because we saw what happened at Pulse Orlando when a terrorist killed 49 of us in cold blood in the name of ISIS. These gays and lesbians support border security because we know that unchecked illegal immigration depresses wages, brings drugs and violence across the border, and we in Greensboro are susceptible to all of these things, too.I make this plea to ALL, Being a REPUBLICAN DOES NOT MAKE YOU A CERTAIN RELIGION, and BEING of the GAY COMMUNITY DOES NOT MAKE YOU A CERTAIN POLITICAL PARTYI again invite people to attend the MARCH FOR TRUMP JUNE 15 Downtown at Noon at Governmental Plaza for an AMERICAN PRIDE RALLY of Free Speech, We do ask those who attend that we keep this event positive, and about unity. All will be invited & we will not discriminate groups/individuals. This Event is Inclusive for EVERYONE no matter your race, gender, religion, sexuality, or political party. But this event will not be Anti-TRUMPI URGE EVERYONE – ESPECIALLY my fellow Republicans to come together this month in PEACE and UNITY. STOP THE HATE and Lets Work Together to Make America and Greensboro a Great Place for EVERYONE.Full Disclosure some words from this speech come directly from a Great Gay Black American called Rob Smith. Co-host and assistant pro at Golden Bear Club at Keene's Point calls in to talk with Holly and share with the listeners about the successful Golf United Charity Scramble for Pulse Orlando event that took place Aug. 26, 2016 at Grand Cypress Golf Club's New Course at Grand Cypress. A big thank you to all that worked the event to make it a success as well as for all those that participated. More than $36,000 was raised. Donations are still being taken at golfunited.org. Jeff Babineau from Golfweek calls in to talk about his participation in the Charity Scramble. Jeff's team finished at 21-under-par and won the tournament. Holly brings up the red hot Sean O'Hair who finished second at Bethpage and jumped from 108th to 15th in the FedEx Cup standings. Jeff mentions that the Ryder Cup selections deadline has been moved back and U.S. Captain Davis Love III has a couple more tournaments before he has to fill his final spots on the team. John Glozek, Publisher Golfing Long Island Magazine, chats with Holly and Will about The Barclays and the New York crowd. John was at the event and shares his thoughts on the first stage of the FedEx Cup. Phil Mickelson, who is a fan favorite in New York didn't fare as well as he and his fans would have liked. John said that watching the tourney on television doesn't give the viewers the full understanding of how tough the breaks are on the greens at Bethpage. Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, talks about Ariya Jutanugarn's 5th win on the LPGA Tour. Steve compares her ball striking to that of a PGA Tour player. She over powers golf courses and fields. Will comments that she reminds him of the domination that Yani Tseng had in the LPGA a few years ago. Holly asks Steve about Inbee Park winning the gold medal in Rio. He said it was comparable to Tiger Woods winning the U.S. Open with a broken leg. Everything that Inbee has been through of late including her injury ... to just come out and play so well and capture the gold was incredible. Steve turns his focus to the PGA Tour. He and Will talk about Jordan Spieth's play of this year as compared to his domination last year when he won the FedEx Cup title. Steve doesn't think Jordan may ever play the four majors as well as he did last year. Holly asks Steve about this week's Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston and who the course may favor. Steve said it's a layout that favors defending champion Rickie Fowler. Steve feels that the guy who makes the most 20 footers is going to win this event. Holly mentions that Billy Horschel tied for 13th in the Barclays and won the FedEx Cup a couple years ago. The player who is playing well right now and didn't have his best "stuff" this past week is said Patrick Reed.

Bob wrote a story about Padraig Harrington who was part of the delegation that went to Switzerland in 2005 to lobby for golf and is excited to actually be a part of. Bob says that some of the countries like Venezuela don't have the amount of Olympic participants that the United States does. But this can help grow the game around the world. Only about 20,000 golfers in Brazil which is about how many play in Orlando alone. Holly asks Bob about the Gil Hanse golf course in Rio. From Bob's perspective he feels that Gil did a really nice job with the land that he has available and has received a lot of compliments from the players. Todd Lewis, the Golf Channel, calls in from Rio to talk to Holly about Golf Channel's coverage. Vibrant sense of community at the Olympics and really didn't know what to expect and what to expect. All the issues like the Zika virus and security issues have not been a problem. Watching other Olympians like Michael Phelps win his 20th and 21st gold medals and the history that is being made in Rio. Todd spoke with Henrik Stenson in Rio and asked him after all that he accomplished in the game of golf, what winning a gold medal would mean to Sweden? Henrik said that winning a Bronze medal would mean so much to Sweden, probably more than him winning a major championship. Todd talks about the fact that golf is not as big in the Netherlands, or Rio and other countries/places around the world as it is in other countries. He feels that is where golf can grow from being an Olympic event. Jeff Babineau, Golfweek, calls in to talk about the American team at the Olympics. Patrick Reed, Rickie Fowler and others. Jeff mentions a Golfweek story that talks about Padraig Harrington's feelings that some of these players are going to regret not participating in. Holly also mentions that the John Deere Classic as well as the U.S. Senior Open Championship. Will picks Patrick Reed as the best overall USA player, Henrik Stenson to win gold and Zach Johnson to win the John Deere. Holly likes Sergio Garcia for the gold and Rickie Fowler as the best USA player to finish in Rio. She takes Steve Stricker at the John Deere and Colin Montgomerie at the U.S. Senior Open.

Bob said he believes Rory McIlroy has around 3 years left on his contract and Tiger re-upped his deal with Nike recently as well. Holly and Bob discuss Walker's win at the PGA Championship. Because of the inclement weather, Walker and others had to play 36 holes on Sunday and the scoring was still low. Walker had to hold off Jason Day's late charge. Bob says that it is hard to believe that it is August and the majors are all finished for the year. Holly talks with Bob about how well the grounds team worked on the course to get the tournament done on Sunday. Some golf purists may feel that playing preferred lie, or lift, clean and place doesn't have a place in the majors, but Bob said that it is in the rule books. This week is the Traveler's Championship with defending Bubba Watson, playing alongside two of his Olympic teammates. Damon Hack, co-host of the Golf Channel's Morning Drive, calls in from the Travelers to talk about the state of the golf industry with Nike's announcement of leaving the equipment side. Damon feels that golf has gone from a high in sales 15 years ago to the low that it's experiencing now. Kevin asks Damon about Tiger's effect on the business. Maybe Nike knows something about Tiger that others do not? Holly talks with Damon about the story he is writing about the Olympics and Matt Kuchar's discovery about the format. In Matt's defense he wasn't one of the 4 representing the USA until Jordan Spieth and others pulled out. The Golf Channel will be covering the Olympics along with NBC. In the final segment of the show Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, talks with Holly G and the gang about the Women's British Open and some of the women who are competing in the Olympics. Hasn't been a long time between Stenson's win at the Open Championship until now. Bob talks about the tough course and the hot weather that is ahead for the players on a short notice. Holly said she thinks it favors Phil Mickelson and his game. Bob said that Phil hasn't had a lot of time to mull over the second place in Scotland after playing so well. Holly and Bob talk about Rory McIlroy and other top golfer's chances to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy. Bob picks McIlroy to win. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, is the next guest who calls in from Baltusrol to talk about the PGA Championship. Dustin Johnson, Rory, Jason Day, and Phil are all playing well and could win. But it's an old time course and has seen a lot of action over the years. Had some big names win there. Holly asks Mike about the Par 4s. Mike said he doesn't believe that any of the Par 4s are "driveable". Mike feels that DJ will be in the mix, Rory, but would love to see Sergio Garcia win a major sometime. Jeff Babineau, Golfweek, calls in to talk about the 4th major of the season already. Jeff talks about Jason Day's press conference and other press conferences. Day is not feeling well. Some of the golfers seem inpatient. Some PGA Club professionals are also competing this week such as Matt Dobyns, Rod Perry right alongside the PGA Tour pros. Also Henrik Stenson's win at the British Open and being able to go back to his native Sweden for a short time to enjoy it. Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, joins the show from Baltusrol and talks about Phil Mickelson and the world class field at a very challenging course. Mentally they have to come ready to go. Kevin asks about Henrik Stenson and how he is doing after his first major win. Todd feels that his win there will open the floodgates for Henrik. When he plays well, wins come in bunches. He won in June on the European Tour and follows that win up with the Open Championship win. Todd says that experience and having control of your emotions is key for players to be successful on the Tours. Holly asks Todd about Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia being two of the best players without a major championship. You get double Ryder Cup points at this event and Lee can get a big boost there. You have to look at guys who are playing well right now. Todd feels the top 3 at this time are DJ, Henrik and Sergio. Long time sports writer and bestselling author Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in to wrap up the show talking about USA's win at the UL International and the Women's British Open Championship. Steve feels that Gerina Piller has a good chance to win this week's major even though she hasn't won. He said that Gerina has figured out her putting stroke and that was what was holding her back. Holly asks Steve about the PGA Championship. He feels that oddly enough that Phil Mickelson might be the favorite to win.

Sunday's final round with Stenson pitted against Phil Mickelson was one for the ages. Stenson carded an 8-under 63 to tie Johnnie Miller's lowest final round score by a major champion. His 20-under 264 was the lowest 72-hole score ever in a major championship. Phil shot a final round 65 and finished with a 267. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, calls in to talk with Holly G and Kevin about the Open Championship. Mike said that it was the second time in four years that someone shot 20-under-par in a major. Mike mentions that Phil started the championship just missing out on a record 62 after his ball lipped out on the 18th hole and then shoots a bogey-free round Sunday but still loses by two strokes. Holly talks about the slump Stenson was in for a couple of years and how he has come back. Mike mentions that Tiger went through two different slumps during his career and was able to come back and play at a high level. Jordan Spieth is in a little bit of a slump and so is McIlroy. Mike said that's what makes Tiger's feat of a 10-year stretch playing at such an unbelievable level so phenomenal. Long time sports writer and bestselling author Steve Eubanks, currently with Global Golf Post, calls in from the UL International Crown in Chicago to share his thoughts about the Open Championship. Steve talks with Holly about LPGA Tour and Lydia Ko's fourth win of the season at the Marathon Classic in Ohio. Kevin, Steve and Holly talk about the team competitions on the LPGA Tour. Holly talks with Steve about the quick turnaround in the PGA Tour schedule and playing the PGA Championship a month early because of the Olympics. In the final segment of the show, Holly welcomes Steve Trattner, one of the partners at Knuth Golf, to the show to talk about the company's award-winning High Heat Driver, 3-wood and hybrid have taken the golf industry by storm, with their lower and deeper center of gravity, perfectly situated for the amateur golf swing. Solstice debuts as the remarkable summer mix of 2016. This mix has special meaning to me as it is dedicated to the victims of the Pulse Orlando shooting that took place in June. This vocal-infused house music experience celebrates life and the community of the dancefloor and is intended to keep you uplifted and smiling and dancing all night long. Stylistically, it has a few nods to the 1990s when I DJed every week in Orlando, and also has some summer gems from the past few years in addition to brand new music. Enjoy this house celebration.

Holly G along with co host Kevin Sternett, assistant pro at Golden Bear Club at Keene's Point and Will Perry, creative director at EVVUS and social media ace for The Golf Insiders, are in the studio on the eve of the 145th Open Championship in Royal Troon, Scotland. The Golf United Charity Scramble for Pulse Orlando web site is live. Visit golfunited.org to find out how you can help. Holly talks with the guys about the U.S. Women's Open Championship that ended once again in a rules infraction. With Anna Nordqvist being penalized for unknowingly moving a grain of sand in the bunker on the second hole of a 3-hole aggregate playoff. Holly G talks with Kevin and Will about the 20 professional golfers who have opted out of playing golf in the 2016 Rio Olympics with the latest American being Jordan Spieth. The sport is only slated to play in this Olympics and the 2020 Olympics after not being part of the games for more than 100 years. Another headline was that Rory McIlroy speaking out about drug testing for golfers in the Olympics being basically a joke. Holly welcomes Jeff Babineau, Golfweek, from Scotland to the show to talk about the Open Championship and Rory's comments. Justin Rose is that golf is skipping Rio and not the Olympics. Jeff said that you really can't blame any of the participants since you can't guarantee someone's health in Rio you can't blame them for not participating. Jeff stressed that it's not just the Zika virus, but the Tour schedule as well as security concerns that have all factored into the player's decisions. Plus for Tour players this might only be the 5th or 6th most important event this season with the Major Championships. Those don't exist in other sports so golfers don't grow up dreaming of playing in the Olympics as they might in the other sports where no major trophy or goal exists. Jeff had a chance to walk the course with Matt Kuchar today who now is the fourth member of the U.S. Olympic team. Matt, a 38-year-old is excited about the Olympics and a possibility of a gold medal. Holly talks with Jeff about the course at Royal Troon and how it sets up for the golfers competing in the Open Championship that starts tomorrow. The wind and the weather will be factors as it is always at Royal Troon as well as the creativity coming from the pot bunkers. Jeff feels the course that solid ball strikers should be favored on this course and golfers who like to fight and hang in there for 4 days. Luck and the player's draw also factor into who will win. Adam Scott is Jeff's pick. Todd Lewis, the Golf Channel, the course is green and looks good. Probably low scores on Thursday but maybe not Friday with the poor weather that's on the forecast. Holly talks with Todd about the course's pot bunkers and the creativity that may come from the players as they try to escape with an up and down over the next four days, especially at the postage stamp 8th hole. Todd says that it's a wedge shot of about 120-130 yards. Todd says there may be some train wrecks on the hole and will be a fun hole to watch. Holly asks Todd about Rory's comments about the Olympics ... Todd agrees with Brandel Chamblee's comments that Rory could have said it a little more eloquently instead of how he said it which seemed like a slap in the face to those who worked tirelessly to get golf back into the Olympics. Also Rory's comments about it not being his responsibility to grow the game of golf. It seemed odd since Rory is totally the opposite when it comes to helping children get into golf and his charities that help others. Todd thinks that it might be a difficult for Rory with all this extra stuff in the media. Todd says that it's just the ninth time that Royal Troon has hosted the Open Championship and the last time was 2004 so a lot of the players aren't familiar with it. Guys who have good form now and those who like links golf courses. Like Dustin Johnson and Zach Johnson, Scott Piercy or even Patrick Reed who finished second at the Scottish Open last week. Another player who may do well this week is Danny Lee who was a former European Tour member. This is the Golf Channel's first time covering a major. Jason Day is Todd's pick to win. Steve Eubanks, The Global Golf Post, calls in the final segment of the show to talk about the U.S. Women's Open Championship and the USGA's handling of the ruling on Anna Nordqvist. He said it clearly was a penalty but it's how they handled the penalty. As far as the Open Championship, Steve's pick is Jordan Spieth. Kevin picks Justin Rose and Gary Woodland, Will takes DJ and Holly takes Sergio and Jason Day. Holly's dark horse is Danny Willett.
