Nicole O'Byrne talks to Greg Marquis about his book, Canada's State Police: 150 years of the RCMP. Stripping away the myth of the RCMP, historian Greg Marquis offers an account of 150 years of a state police force acting on behalf of the wealthy and powerful. From its start policing Indigenous people in western Canada, the RCMP has gone on to surveil, harass and seek to jail labour organizers, leftist idealists, Quebec sovereigntists and now environmental activists. The RCMP has often made itself judge, jury, and executioner of who can live unmolested in Canada. Drawing upon all the available literature on the organization's history, historian Greg Marquis lays bare 150 years of state police action. He highlights the force's racism, sexism, misogyny, and internal dysfunctions. An invaluable resource, this book challenges the carefully constructed myths about the RCMP's role in Canadian life. Greg Marquis is a historian at the University of New Brunswick. He specializes in Canadian history and criminal justice theory. He has developed a number of courses in the area of law and society, and is on the editorial board of Acadiensis. He is the author of multiple books including, The Vigilant Eye: Policing Canada from 1867-9/11, Truth & Honour: The Death of Richard Oland and the Trial of Dennis Oland, and John Lennon, Yoko Ono and the Year That Canada Was Cool. Greg Marquis lives in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. If you like our work, please consider supporting it: bit.ly/support_WTY. In Episode 19, Chey and Pav talk about the benefit of using Textbooks in the classroom. They begin the episode by talking about the different ways that they use textbooks in the classroom. They discuss how teachers have evolved and have moved away from being heavily reliant on them. Technology has helped cause this shift away from using textbooks, but also the stigma and judgement that is attached to using textbooks in the classrooms. Teachers are hesitant to admit that they find value in textbooks because it has become "unsexy" to use them in classroom teaching. However, as Chey and Pav note during this episode, there is much value to be gained from many textbooks. There is a place for textbooks in the classroom, and teachers should feel comfortable with saying they find value in utilizing them to their fullest potential in the classroom. Textbooks are written by very credible authors, and the publishing process is a rigorous one that goes through a deep vetting process, and therefore, the content is generally very well thought out and valid. Chey and Pav talk about how teaching and learning websites dedicated to particular subject areas, such as math, have become much more commonplace in the school setting. However, issues such as equitable access to technology are big issues in schools. Therefore, it is very important to consider textbooks for foundational work in subject areas, to use to springboard and amplify particular learning tasks, and to gain ideas from when it comes to developing deeper lessons. For their "3 Enlightened Minutes" Segment, Chey and Pav introduce Melissa Wright, a High School Math teacher from Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Canada. Melissa talks about School Culture and Climate - and making sure that Students and Teachers are getting the best possible learning experience. Her info is provided at the bottom of the details. Chey and Pav wrap up by talking about some of their text book experiences in the classroom. They always remind their listeners to Inspire, don't Require, to always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies. ----------------------------------------------------------- You can Check out our 3 Enlightened Minutes Guests: Melissa Wright at: Twitter: @sighgushgasp Website: https://www.melissawright.ca/ ----------------------------------------------------------- Chey and Pav are part of the School Rubric team. He played alongside some superstars during his time in the show, such as Claude Giroux, Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar, Steven Stamkos, Marty St. Louis, Vinny Lecavalier, and the list goes on. Randy was born and raised in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Listen to Harp butcher that town’s name at the beginning of the interview lol. Randy is the incoming bench boss of the Brockville Braves, and he was nice enough to call in all the way from New Brunswick for half an hour just to have a chat one-on-one with Harp. So, we hope you love this interview!

Discover Saint John   Introducing Victoria Clarke Victoria Clarke has an enviable job for all of those who live and love Saint John, New Brunswick. Back in July, Victoria took the job as Executive Director of Discover Saint John, the destination marketing organization for the place that the Boiling Point calls home. For many, Saint John is a city you drive past on the highway on your way to other destinations. However, for those in the know, Saint John is a hidden gem consisting of authentic, genuine people, unique surroundings, and quaint businesses and services. Like Victoria says, Saint John is like the prettiest girl at the dance with low self-esteem; sometimes those who live in the city forget just how great they have it. Part of Victoria's mandate is to encourage those in the business world to bring their conferences and annual general meetings to Saint John. The city is a terrific spot for such events because of the close proximity of hotels, world-class restaurants, activities, and some of the most welcoming people you could find. Those who come in from the bigger cities are impressed with all this little place can offer in convenience and quality. Check out Boiling Point this week for a love-in for the city we hold so dear, Saint John.   In this episode Dave starts us out with a little story about running into Victoria in a hotel parking lot. We talk about what we love about the city of Saint John and what makes the city so unique. Greg makes a pitch to sell his waterfront cottage in Quispamsis. Victoria reminds us of some of the great activities and sights that tourists and stay-cationers can take part in. We talk about the unique personality of the city and its people. Victoria reminds all Saint Johners to be ambassadors of their city. She also tells us how Discover Saint John can be an asset to planning your unique event. Everyone shares one of their own quirky Saint John finds.   Links - Discover Saint John website - Discover Saint John YouTube - Discover Saint John Facebook - Discover Saint John Twitter   Learn more about your ad choices.
