Shortly after we did this podcast Matt died from complications of cystic fibrosis. With permission from his sisters, and dear friend Jennifer Bleecher (featured in this podcast) we are now airing this podcast to shine a light about what a great man Matt was. He speaks in this podcast about concern for his health. Thanks to Jenn, his family and to Matt for all he gave to the world and especially the CF community. You are missed and will never be forgotten. From his sisters Molly McBryan and Ame Austin:"After an extremely long hard fought battle with cystic fibrosis, Matt McCloskey succumbed to this terrible disease on February 7th, 2024. He was a beloved husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He will be remembered for a lot of things; one of which was his passion for the Take A Breather foundation in which he started. The concept of Take A Breather started for Matt in 2012, when his own health battle with CF really took a turn. Knowing first hand what it is like to live with this disease, it was his dream and vision to offer families living with cystic fibrosis, a temporary escape, a breather, from the everyday struggles and emotional burdens of their disease. Matt put his heart and soul into this Foundation and is truly what drove him despite his own health issues. Because of Matt, thousands of lives have been forever impacted due to his selflessness of wanting to bring joy to so many living with CF. He worked tirelessly and countless hours for the Take A Breather Foundation and the CF community. Throughout the years, we heard from many recipients/families the huge impact Matt's mission had on their lives but we know there were countless others whom we did not hear from because he also worked quietly behind the scenes to motivate, answer questions, or just listen. There are no words to express the profound impact this loss will have on all those who knew and loved him and to the CF community."This was written prior to his passing:Matt and Jen have a great story to tell. Two people with CF, living their separate lives, and then they began working together to make a difference in the lives of people with CF.Matt McCloskey was born in 1968 and grew up in Philadelphia, he has several other siblings, and one he never met because he died from CF at 2 months old.In 2015 Matt received a lung transplant. Matt's in his 50's now, but his life expectancy was 6 years old.He is currently running the Take A Breather Foundation.Jen Bleecher, who is 52 years old, is the Community Outreach Volunteer for Take a Breather. Jen is married, and has a 27-year-old daughter . Jen worked as a nurse for over 20 years. Jen had a double lung transplant, she has pivoted to volunteering some of her time helping with the Community Outreach initiatives, such as building relationships within the CF and broader communities, assisting in planning of fundraising events, and overseeing Take A Breather's School Club program. Visitors to the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis can experience New York artist Paul Chan's exhibition “Breathers,” which relies upon air and wind to create kinetic movement and evoke an emotional response that reminds us to inhale and exhale with greater intention. Associate curator Misa Jefferies and artist Simiya Sudduth reflect on what air and breath look like both in art and in healing —- and why taking a ‘breather' is necessary.
Comedian Carolyn Castiglia joins Eileen and Maryanne to talk heavy breathers, abducting fathers, and the GenX-perience (see what we did there?) of suffering alone.

What do you 'do' when you find yourself in a time when the pressure is alot, the pace is intense, there's a lot happening - whether it's stuff you are excited about or stuff that's dragging you down? How do you move through it without becoming overwhelmed by it? Pressure and stress are part of life - but there is a difference between toxic pressure and stress that makes you sick and creates distress, and healthy pressure that stretches and supports you to grow. The notion that you should be able to stay strong and push through when the pressure increases is actually a program for self sacrifice, burnout, and isolation - one I invite you to release. And instead embrace this as the new design: YOU receive the support, space, and true strength you need, desire and require during times when the pressure is high. There's a different way to 'do' pressure, and a much healthier way to relate to the pressures coming at you - in ways that are more empowering, human and balanced. There is a lot of pressure that comes at you that is NOT yours to take on, and that you have more choice than you know to say No Thank You Pressure Making Monsters! Consider this: If you want to do more than manage through pressure and intense times, you have to be able to SEE THE SOURCE of the pressure in order to gain the wisdom of how to work with it, in ways that empower you to receive the benefits without crossing the boundary into toxic distress. Tune into Feminine Power Time: #220: Feeling Pressure? What to "Do" When You are In It Together we will explore these three inquiries, to shine a light on where you have the power to release pressure, create space, and dance through or surrender into the change, challenge or situations you find moving through: Where is the pressure coming from? The 4 sources of pressure - self, other, system, society. We'll sense into each one and shed light on where the pressure is coming from. What do you want to do with it? The 4 choices for working with the pressure vs. the pressure working you over. Shift out of it. Surrender to it. Dance through it. Create space within it. What structure you need to put in place daily, weekly and monthly so you relax, release, rest and restore during times you are under pressure? These 4 practices that will get you through this without burning out. Breathers. Movers. End Dates. Receivers. See you there! Bring your Overwhelmed and Over It book if you have it to refer to. What are the non-breathers, and how will our world respond when we encounter these beings? Does the current UFO phenomenon have anything to do with these mysterious life forms spoken of in the Urantia Book? And how will the world's religions respond when they find out that we are not alone in the universe? And if the non-breathers were not enough, how will people respond when the first fusers begin to leave this planet in, " Chariots of fire?" All of this may sound a bit perplexing, but even if you are not a student of the Urantia book, this podcast will make the subject of non-breathers and first users clear and accessible to all who listen. An incredibly interesting topic discussed by myself and guest, and author Richard E. Warren. Philosopher and writer Amia Srinivasan meets with artist Paul Chan for the latest episode of Artists on Writers | Writers on Artists. Together they contemplate fate, the distortion of reality caused by screens, their first experiences with philosophy, and making meaning through their respective disciplines. Chan's exhibition “Breathers” is currently on view at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis through July 16. Amia's latest book, The Right to Sex: Feminism in the Twenty-first Century, is out now with Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom and Farrar, Straus and Giroux in the United States.
Anyone who's driven by a car dealership in the U.S. has probably seen them: Inflatable nylon figures with smiley faces, bending and twisting in the breeze. These roadside attention getters are known in the marketing world as "tube men" or "sky dancers." Paul Chan calls them "Breathers," and they have played a central role in the artist's practice since he debuted his own uncanny renditions of the dancers in 2017 at Greene Naftali gallery in New York. The swaying figures also symbolize the artist's own winding approach to his practice, and the need, sometimes, to take a breather. After working primarily with video early in his career—including violating sanctions to shoot a video essay in Baghdad during the U.S. occupation—Chan grew exhausted by screens. He left art production for five years and opened his own publishing house, the beloved indie outfit Badlands Unlimited, which has put out eclectic titles ranging from Saddam Hussein's speeches on democracy to the interactive e-book What Is a Kardashian? Chan made his return to visual art after realizing that those car-lot tube men could be turned into offscreen animations. Now, the "Breathers" are the centerpiece of a major solo show at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, open through July 16. Artnet News's deputy editor Rachel Corbett sat down with Chan—a recent winner of the MacArthur 'Genius' grant—to talk about the tyranny of screens, his early adoption of crypto, and the importance, in every artist's life, of simply taking a break.

Despite its name, the Johnstone River snapping turtle is no snappier than any other freshwater turtle – and is perhaps better known by its alias, the ‘bum breather'. According to turtle expert Alistair Freeman, this ability for cloacal respiration is thought to enable bum breathers to stay under water for prolonged periods to avoid predation, although this is still only theory. Robust and adaptable, the Johnstone River snapping turtle is an important contributor to keeping its freshwater ecosystem healthy, thanks to its enthusiastic consumption of detritus and dead things! When it's not hoovering up these tasty morsels, it enjoys hanging out in areas of river with deep pools and riffles, and healthy riparian vegetation. Alistair is a Senior Technical Officer for the Queensland Government's Aquatic Species Program and joins us to share his expertise and insights into the quirky Johnstone River snapping turtle.

How's your energy levels these days? How resilient are you feeling knowing the dark rainy days of fall, or cold snowy days of winter are fast approaching? In today's episode I have the honour of interviewing Canada's very own Barnet Breathers, this is a group of men with an extraordinary weekly ritual that brings more energy, strength, and resilience to their days. And it's all related to something called Wim Hof Breathwork, which it turns out, has some ancient eastern origins. We'll explain what Wim Hof Breathwork is, why you have to add it to your daily routine right away, and we'll cover all of its many mind blowing health benefits. Lastly, we'll cover the time I met Wim Hof himself, Guinness World record holder of many things, and how, I somehow ended up in 300 lbs of ice water. BACKGROUND:“No matter how your life is today, breathing makes life better. That's a strong statement. But from what I have seen in my own practice, and in our trainings, when people learn conscious breathing, life improves.” – Anthony AbbagnanoAnthony, lives in Tuscany, Italy, where he and his wife Amy Rachelle, are co-founders of the Alchemy School of Healing Arts (ASHA), the foundation stone of a consciously created community in the Province of Grosseto, Italy (ashacommunity.com). Anthony is considered by many who have participated in his Breathwork trainings to be a visionary thought leader. He uniquely combines philosophy and psychology with spirituality to guide others in loving ways using conscious breathwork as one of his many foundational tools. Anthony has guided more than 100,000 people through different breath practices. Many report an experience of “oneness” during and after a breath session. This oneness could be interpreted as a connection with the Divine, the Superconscious, or the Quantum Field. He is also the creator of Alchemy of Breath, Alchemy Meditation, and the Alchemy of Breath Academy, an accredited school that teaches Breathwork practitioners and facilitators all over the world for one-on-one sessions, group sessions, and online breathwork. He teaches annual workshops and seminars in several countries, and trains both facilitators and individual practitioners in a variety of class settings. Anthony pioneered the use of online Bbreathwork in 2013, enabling the practice to reach hundreds of thousands; he now heads Breathe The World, a regular Sunday event to suit all time zones. He has been featured as a keynote speaker on the Shift Network's Breathwork Summit, The Breathe Festival, the Global Inspiration Conference, and The Integrative Health Conference in London, having also given talks at the Twitter headquarters in London. He is also the founder of The Community of Healing—an international organization that promotes the union of Western medicine with all other modalities—as well as the Ark, a retreat center in Bali, Indonesia, dedicated to community health and emerging consciousness. # # #INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHT NOTES:GAIL/HOST: Before we begin and dig deep into your unique expertise, which includes your ability to see someone's soul beyond their personality, Anthony please share with the listeners today a story or a few insights about claiming your own innate worthiness. Anthony then shares an intimate "edgy" story of walking in his neighborhood as an adult that caused him to remember a wound he felt as a small child, offering this insight: "THIS IS WHERE IT GETS REAL--to realize that the person who is hurting in this moment (of getting triggered) is actually the person who has been carrying the hurt for years, even decades. So in that journey to reclaiming worthiness, and reclaiming the innocence that we are, it does mean identifying the lack of worthiness first to be able to bridge that gap."~Anthony AbbagnanoBENEFITS OF BREATHWORK:From Anthony's book:“...so many Breathers have felt not just a deep healing, but also a spiritual awakening. The same applies to the several times I have heard expressions of amazement that one Breathwork session could equate to ten years of conventional psychotherapy.” ~Anthony Abbagnano.--OTHER SNIPPETS FROM HIS BOOK IN DEVELOPMENT: "There are countless reasons to create a Breathwork practice: to reconnect with your body, reduce stress, develop resilience, increase calm and inner peace, release past traumas, deepen your meditation, repair relationships, connect to compassion, become more mindful, stimulate personal growth, increase self-awareness, develop your spiritual practice, or re-identify with your purpose in life. --You also may use the breath to boost your creativity and memory, feel more vital and alert, increase your efficiency in the workplace, improve presence of mind, gain more clarity, expand consciousness, and transform the way you perceive life. --Breathing can support very deep and powerful inner work, but it also can simply increase your enjoyment of life and enhance your experience of the hidden blessings that await you. As we progress through the book, I' offer invitations to use the breath in therapeutic ways; should you feel resistance, I encourage you to try the practice anyway—feel and breathe. Breathwork provides a plethora of physical benefits. It promotes a healthy immune system, activates your metabolism, increases energy, and is a great way to burn calories. Exhalation cleanses us, too, accounting for as much as 70% of our physical toxins. The breath complements any therapy you might be involved with (physical or psychological). Maintaining a conscious breathing practice helps to ease chronic pain and supports a speedy return to health from physical illness. It also can promote recovery after an operation, and some studies have shown that it might even ward off certain types of cancer and other chronic diseases."IN COMPARISON TO / or in CONJUNCTION WITH MEDITATION:"For me, Breathwork multiplies it--almost quantum. Breathwork is turbo-charged; for me it is like rocket-fuel meditation because only 10 breaths can begin to change your point of view whereas meditation can take hours or even days."~Anthony Abbagnano.GAIL/HOST: Anthony, many who have worked with you consider you a great healer, and like me as a coach, you also have a passion for guiding and witnessing others through “inner child” work. Please define for our listeners who may not be familiar, what “inner child” is and why it is so important or life-altering for our healing journeys.· (Other snippet from his book--"Another part of 'inner child' work. Often people consciously seek to change their habits, perhaps to stop smoking, lose weight or exercise more. Think of how many times you or someone you know has made a New Year's resolution, only to see it broken with a few days or weeks. We might set goals or resolutions with maximum determination, but most often they fail because the unconscious mind has already decided how things will play out. Its stored programs and enormous processing power override even the best of intentions. This means that our Inner Child—the person who stored those programs in early life—might be in control. Even though the adult is seeking to make changes, the old life script is the one that wins."ANTHONY: "In my work, I consider the relationship with the Inner Child as a key to the healing process. However, in my experience, before we can become successful allies with our Inner Child, we must first distinguish it from our adult self. Then, we are able to speak to its deepest wound. The lack of distinction from the inner child—or over-identification with it—creates confusion. The adult becomes consumed by a yearning for relief. And as the inner child suffers, the adult self looks outside for the solution. This is a costly error." "As long as we invest in the hope that someone else can solve our difficulty, we keep giving our power away and ignoring the weeping wound inside. We might try any solution offered from the sublime to the ridiculous, but unless ...

Ryan received his PlayStation 5 and proceeded to watch progress bars for a few days as he moved into the next generation of PlayStation. But eventually, he got to play some games with Miles Morales and Astro's Playroom. TGI has upgraded and we're now fully capable of covering the next generation of consoles (when new games come out). We've got plenty of news from the latest State of Play and Pokemon Presents announcements. There's also a good chunk of info out of Bioware with Anthem Next being canned, the next Dragon Age being single player focused, and Henry Cavill teasing a Mass Effect project.

Chronicles didn't meet 2021's standards of fun, so we've skipped ahead to spend some time with our new friend, Isaiah. The prophet starts out with his vision of Judah and Israel, and what might be a flashback to Job. It doesn't seem like there are fig newtons in the medicine cabinet, but there are plenty of melons! Does it feel like Yahweh has made some new years resolutions to you? Things take a turn when we learn that a strappy loin cloth does not a king make and why haughty daughters have been given rope and sackcloth. If you want MORE drinking and bible-ing, including bonus episodes, interviews with experts, fun mini series’, and more, consider becoming a ‘parishioner’ at Patreon.com/DrunkBibleStudy Our theme music is Book Club by Josh and Anand.
Hey, we got gas, so there’s an extra break this week. Did you see that thing where armed thugs tried to mount a coup in the State? Did you see that thing where two Democrats became senators in Georgia? Did you see that thing where the store wasn’t very full but some people don’t wear masks properly? Do you feel liberated in a mask, so you can sing and mock people? Do you do reflective recordings on your phone like Isabelle? Did you see that the sign wasn’t offensive? Do you miss it being offensive? Do you like this format where I just type inane questions?

An accomplished actor, musician and comedian, Kirby Heyborne wows audiences on the silver screen and in his live performances. Kirby’s comedic wit and charm will guarantee the audience a memorable performance in the upcoming Farrelly Brothers Fox feature The Three Stooges, opposite Sean Hayes and Sofia Vergara. Kirby plays “Teddy” a childhood friend, who accidentally becomes involved in a murder plot with the three stooges. Kirby’s interest in the arts began at 12 years old when he started writing his own songs on the piano. At 15, he picked up a guitar and taught himself how to play a Beatles song using a “How To” book. He soon started performing anywhere he could and quickly sold out of the 50 albums he recorded in a friend’s bedroom. Since then, Kirby has released four solo albums and has had his music featured in many films. He has delighted audiences across the country with his ability to blend heart-warming stories, beautiful music and comedic wit. After graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in Economics, this dynamo signed with an agent and was immediately cast in an Idaho Lottery commercial. Two weeks later, he landed a role in the Indy feature Singles Ward. After completing the film, the producers cast him to be the lead in their next project, the lighthearted family comedy. The R.M. in which his song “Kolob” is featured. Kirby received critical acclaim for his starring role in the World War II drama Saints and Soldiers which was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. He also starred in the award-winning boy band mockumentary The Sons of Provo, and the award-winning quixotic comedy Pirates of the Great Salt Lake (The Weinstein Co.). Kirby was also a series regular on FBC’s series “Free Ride” and has appeared in numerous nationwide commercial campaigns including the upcoming Honda campaign featuring Mario Andretti. Creative, talented and versatile, Kirby has received a number of Audio File Magazine’s Earphone awards for excellence in narration. He has narrated over a hundred titles including: Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Black Swan Green, Breathers and The Genius. He is known to deliver raw emotion without drawing attention to the performance itself. This performer is a co-founder and director of the celebrated LA-based improv comedy group The Society, which sells out theaters all over the country. He is also the co-founder, co-producer, co-director, and co-writer of kerBLINK, a new video channel whose mission is to make the world laugh with ‘environMENTALLY friendly’ clean videos, films, songs, and creative content. Kirby lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three children. He speaks fluent Spanish and is an Eagle Scout and currently serves as Cub master for his local Cub Scout Pack. He likes to swim, bike, hike, camp, snow and water ski and is a self-proclaimed board game snob, but his favorite activity is to cook and bake with his family.

Long before there was little show called Stranger Things, The Duffer Brothers created a small scale film that borders being prophetic for the year 2020. A film all about being trapped indoors, worrying about Breathers, and just trying not to lose it on those around you. If you think you can handle it, then grab a beer, get out of your bunker, and let’s talk about Hidden. Speaking of beer, we had the head brewer Mo Katomski of ViewPoint Brewing give us the lowdown on 2 of the best beers we’ve had this year: Eddie Van Lager, a delicious and very fall feeling beer. Followed by Fairies Wear Boots, the staple ale with a crisp balance of Citra & Mosaic hops. Cheers!
To those who appreciate their beauty, great whales are priceless. For those who prefer cold hard facts, a recent study estimated their value: about two million dollars apiece. That comes from their benefits to the environment.Great whales are the giants of the whale family -- a total of 13 species, including blue, humpback, sperm, and bowhead. They’re found in all the world’s oceans. The whales accumulate carbon from the food they eat. Carbon dioxide is taken from the air by tiny organisms known as phytoplankton. The whales eat the phytoplankton, or they eat larger organisms that feed on phytoplankton. Over a whale’s average lifetime, that adds up to about 33 tons of carbon removed from the air. When a whale dies, it sinks to the bottom of the ocean, locking the carbon away. And whale poop contains iron, nitrogen, and other nutrients that help the phytoplankton grow. So more whales means more phytoplankton, which capture about 40 billion tons of carbon per year and generate about half of the oxygen that’s pumped into the air.The International Monetary Fund studied the value of the contribution that great whales make to the environment. The study found that the current population is worth a trillion dollars or more. And the number of whales probably is a quarter of what it was before people started slaughtering them. A return to earlier population levels could greatly increase the amount of carbon taken out of the atmosphere -- a priceless benefit of a priceless resource.

On this episode, Sarah and Jessy dive almost too deep into Frank Henenlotter's 1982 film "Basket Case." Set around a young man's need for vengeance, if there's one thing we learned from this film, it's definitely to steer clear of heavy breathers. With a 1.5/5 pour rating, you may need a couple more to make it through the ending.

Author S.G. Browne has been on Geekscape before. He's also signed at the Geekscape booth at San Diego Comic Con a few times. We first met when his zombie novel "Breathers" brought him onto the Geekscape radar. Last time he was on Geekscape he was promoting his follow up "Fated". Now, Scott has a crime novel called "Lucky Bastard" that should peak every single one of your interests. Scott reads the first chapter from the book, talks about his favorite crime novelists and gives advice to any aspiring writers out there! Also, we actually talk basketball a bit! Scott's a pretty awesome writer and a funny guy (on top of being a fantastic conversationalist and a gentleman). But you're about to find that out… GEEKSCAPE!
