As pastors, we are all hoping to raise kids that love the Lord and love His church. But it can seem tricky to navigate when the world around us is so dark and church wounds are very real. Many of us even fear our kids will be driven away from the church or walk away from their faith. This is a candid conversation hosted by Rachel Swanson of New City Church and her dad, Pastor Bob Johnson, who raised four Jesus-lovin' and church-building PKs, with many bumps and lessons learned along the way. Ministers Fellowship International exists to help leaders build healthy, strong, impacting churches and to do so in a way that makes for a healthy leader. The Jill Monaco Show: Conversations that inspire you to love well
Women feel the strain of being famous at home in unique ways. The desire to be a mother to our children can often conflict with our passion for work and the stage we believe God is calling us to. Not only that, the stage God has called you to may very well be your home. Yet, you feel the pressure to have a stage beyond it. Or perhaps you have to work and wish so much you could stay at home, and the added pressure of not being there leaves you feeling less than famous. Rachel Swanson is a dear friend of ours, but even more, she is a best-selling and multiple award-winning author, inspirational speaker, and accredited Christian life coach. She joins us this week for a heart to heart conversation about her pull to be an entrepreneur while raising "wannabe triplets," and how her journey led her to being a dental hygienist for a season, a stay-at-home mom for a season, and even the primary breadwinner for a season. Her secret to managing it all? Finding harmony. But how does Rachel "find" harmony? That's what this episode is all about. Here are a few highlights: The struggles of being a stay-at-home mom versus full time work, versus part-time both work and motherhoodHow to find your own unique calling apart from the expectations of othersPractical ways to connect with God throughout the day even while taking care of kids and workingHow saying "yes" to God usually brings about the most hardship and joy all at the same timeHow to step into the "only God" story waiting just for youLiving in such a way that our souls can breathe again Show Notes: To purchase Rachel's new book, Refine and Restore: Revive Your Heart, Release Your Purpose, click here. Rachel opens up to us about a time in her life that she calls a spiritual depression. Postpartum Rachel was feeling low self-esteem but there was more to it than a chemical or hormonal imbalance. Her husband brought to her attention the emptiness and depression that she was experiencing. Rachel says that it was more of a spiritual depression because she was living and believing the lies that Satan was telling her about her worth. The heart of the story means so much because this is where we see beauty coming from pain. It is during this time that Rachel was given a new path in her life away from her job as a dental hygienist and into writing and speaking and sharing God's word. Ironically, this all came about by getting raw and real (and sometimes angry) with God.
Rachel Swanson is a dental hygienist turned bestselling author, speaker, and accredited Christian life coach. Ultimately, God is in control, and He dearly loves Jesus and also dearly loves us. Sin separated us from God, and only Jesus' sacrifice could fix this separation. Jesus was completely sinless, so He was the only suitable sacrifice to pay for sin before a holy, perfect, sinless God. Jesus died so that we could have a relationship with God forever, but also so that we could have that relationship now with abundant life in His presence. Today on the podcast, I am so excited to have my friend, Rachel Swanson, with me. We're chatting about overcoming anxiety and how understanding God's character can help you to overcome it. As moms I know that it's very common to struggle with fear. With all the bad things going on in the world, it’s too easy to let that fear creep in—I know it is for me. With shootings, hurricanes, and natural disasters going on, my first response after getting the tragic news is to put myself in their shoes and wonder what I would do to protect my kids in those situations. Then I worry and worry! Sometimes there is no good answer, but that's usually when the fear kicks in. The reality is that I know I have to trust God and really put my trust in Him. So, that’s what the heart of our talk about is today — you're going to love it! Rachel’s new book is unique. It is a devotional coloring book called Big and Little Coloring Devotional. It’s really cool. My girls and I have really been enjoying it. Each page has a little devotional — one for mom (or dad) and one for your child. Rachel Swanson was coloring with her daughter and searched for a devotional coloring book they could do together. She didn't find anything on the market and decided to create one of her own. We hear how God prompted her to pursue this project and her journey became one of taking the next step, doing the hard thing, in order to be a world changer for good right where she was. A woman who encourages other women to pursue their dreams, is doing the same in her own life. Hear how Rachel, a life coach, urges women to identify and carve out time for the things that give them the most joy. We also hear how she tells her identical twin boys apart, what she is willing to give up precious sleep for.. Rachel invites us into her process as if we were sitting across from each other. A warm, lighthearted episode, we hope you'll find one sister's story of walking through the doors God is opening to be both inspiring and encouraging for you to do the same.
Rachel Swanson joins me for episode 85 to have a conversation that I think most women will be able to relate to. Rachel is a wife, mother to 3, former dental hygienist—her smile is amazing—and now life coach, author and speaker. I asked Rachel to join me to talk about what spiritual and personal investments women need to make in their own lives, why women tend to carry so much anxiety and practical ways to help you in the moment when you feel anxious or overwhelmed. Links: Rachel's coloring book: Big and Little Coloring Devotional Takeaways From Our Conversation: One thing that stuck with me was the reasons why we struggle with anxiety. I had never thought about how much fear is the root of all anxiety. The four root causes of anxiety are fear of lack of control, failure, loss and rejection. I can look at the anxiety I face and pin point the root. Knowing the root helps you to be able to pray more specifically. Surviving being a mom of little kids requires some intentional self-care. Go back to the basics of nurturing your soul—prayer and reading your bible and times of stillness to listens to God. talk to god in the car. utilize the power of prayer. Practical tips - sticky notes. Before she goes to sleep, she writes out 3 things she wants to accomplish the next day. She doesn’t have to worry about anything more. It helps her to not stress. And cut the guilt and hire the help. When it comes to self-care, figure out something that fills you up - daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly. I recently wrote a guest blog post over at the Parent Cue blog on this very topic What did you enjoy about this episode? What was your takeaway. Let's continue the conversation on Instagram or Twitter or you can send me an email here. Thank you for following along life with me. I love being apart of your day. And as always, I hope this show helps you survive a little easier.
In this episode, Rachel Swanson shares her journey from a depressed, young mom of 3 to a vibrant author and speaker, following God in the everyday moments of life.
Rachel Swanson is a dental hygienist turned author and speaker. Her book, Big and Little Coloring Devotional (released in LifeWay stores, April 2017), was birthed by her own struggle to keep it together as a busy mama of three children under two years old. A rising inspirational speaker, Rachel shares personal and spiritual growth insights related to encouraging moms in motherhood, helping women discover their unique purpose in Christ, understanding God's design for healthy sexuality, and overcoming stress and anxiety in their lives. Rachel has been married ten years to her husband who loves her despite her love for coffee and often impulsive nature. They rear their tribe of identical twin boys, their baby girl, and a Weimaraner who thinks she's a human. Rachel tells the about the dreams she didn't see coming in a season of feeling anxious and overwhelmed as a mom of three little kids. She shares what inspired her to create the Big and Little Coloring Devotional and how it's helped her find time to be in God's word and engage her kids with scripture. She is honest about the insecurities she has struggled with on this journey and the lies that the enemy has used to try to defeat her progress—and how daily submitting those to God has helped her continue to walk forward. I loved hearing her share about letting go of control and allowing God to lead us in taking the next steps toward our dream.
