We want to give to you, not receive from you. Worksheets to help you conquer debt and produce wealth Free E-book to go deeper Check Your Balance 3 laws of balance Reference point Constant correction Clear Objective Last week – Reference point The reference point for your finances is SPENDING. You must be KNOWINGWhere your money is GOING We challenged you to track your spending and become debt free. Today I want to talk to you about constant correction. Constant Correction Balance – look at reference pointbut hand is constantly making corrections. When it comes to our finances, we make constant corrections with a BUDGET. A budget is a plan for every dollar. We know where our money is going because we track our spending. Now we must manage our money – Stewardship. Over a few months of tracking your spending you now know approximately how much money you need to operate. There are times when we get off balance, we have to make corrections to get back on track. Are your finances unbalanced? Have you ever figured out a budget? Are you living by it? Balance requires constant correction. Here is a hard truth. We usually have enough money, we just don't manage it properly. There might be enough money, but there isn't any balance. Managing money becomes more difficult when we get married. One of the reasons people give pastors for wanting to get married is… It'll save us money. There are tax benefits to being married… The truth is marriage often brings about financial disasters. Specific upbringings…They didn't talk about money… Just use a credit card…Hoard your money…Worry about money… Before you get married - talk about money! Two people in love can be destroyed by an out of balanced view of money. Balance requires a Reference Point and it requires constant correction. Your kids need to hear you talk about money. They need to hear conversations about how we should spend our money. They shouldn't be caught off guard when they enter their own lives. You need a budget – a plan for every dollar. You need to tell your money what to do. Budget for…The essentials – Housing, food, transportation… Insurance, Utilities…What about the things I enjoy doing? Entertainment & lifestyle… Saving for future needs:-Retirement-Car replacement-Home repairs Imagine – your car breaks down…What if you saved for your next car NOW?Not a loan (Debt) but you paid cash. This is possible. This is balance. This is a plan called a budget. What if you had a budget that included giving to the needs of others? Hate the idea of budgets…?Master Your MoneyOr be Mastered By Your Money My problem… I did not have a plan, so there was no telling where my money would go. Money was emotional. -Stress, anxiety, greedYou know what is not emotional – a budget. Freedom from stress, anxiety, greed… Cash system-GroceriesClothesEntertainment (blow money) I had to learn to master my money - negative emotional relationship with money. Awareness& Discontentment You are content until you become aware of better. Aware of a new house… discontent…New phone…New brand…New shoes… Discontentment leads us to debt……stress, anxiety, and greed. God has a plan… 1 Tim 6:6-11 But godliness with contentment is great gain.7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 11 But you, man of God,

In order to follow God more deeply, we must let go of everything that is not God. A homily by Fr. Jeremiah Myriam Shryock, CFR.
It's easy to want to live in comfort, heck, it's even human nature. However, it is the times that we endure something really hard that sets the cadence for our future. We often believe it's our planning, setting objectives and reflecting on failure that gives us the tools to be successful the next year, but we underestimate the power of a "Sucky" Reference Point. What allows us to find creative solutions, drive through the pain and show up calm in a storm is our ability to ground ourselves in moments that have callused us. The toughening of our mind, body and spirit is the special sauce to peace and success, not metrics we organize. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.20.549309v1?rss=1 Authors: Hoskin, R., Pernet, C., Talmi, D. Abstract: With an aim to understand how brains compute the expected utility of mixed prospects, namely those associated with both negative and positive attributes, we designed a task which equated the opportunity to learn about these attributes and their hedonic value. Participants underwent fMRI scanning while they experienced a classical conditioning paradigm where emotionally-neutral faces predicted a probability of pain and reward conforming to a 2 (Electric Pain: high, low) x 2 (Monetary Reward: high, low) factorial design. We found a robust interaction between the anticipation of pain and reward in the BOLD signal. Analysis of simple effects revealed that sensitivity to each attribute increased under high levels of the other attribute. In the bilateral insula and mid-cingulate gyrus sensitivity to pain was greater under high reward, and in the OFC, caudate, ventral striatum and VTA sensitivity to reward was greater under high pain. We speculate that this pattern is due to dynamic shifts in the reference point participants considered to evaluate each attribute. Copy rights belong to original authors. Today more than ever there seems to be a pervasive and almost unrelenting call for total devotion to self. Who I am, what I am, what is my life's purpose and meaning flows from within me. Where I fit into the grand scheme of things (who has the right to say what that is?) is up to me and how I feel about things. This strikes at the very core of our concept of being what/who we are. What is a human being? One's answer to that question serves as the foundation for an understanding of why we exist as we are, which then goes right into the issues surrounding meaning and purpose. Is there a danger in making ourselves and our desires the guides we use to establish who and what we are and then how to live in light of what it means to be us? I answer that with a question: How do things seem to be going these days in a society that is increasingly disinterested in or resistant to the idea that there is a transcendent source of meaning, purpose, destiny, and the blueprint for how best to navigate our life journey in light of who and what we are? Is there a better way to navigate life's journey and where do we find the light and guidance to do so? ------------------------------------------- Attributions: "89" by El Kid from the album "VeEISkSiEdl" featuring various artists. How often do you look at someone else's behavior and think, "If I were them, I'd do it differently?" It's common to use yourself, your beliefs, your perspective as the reference point to judge others' behaviors. In this episode of The Fit Mom Podcast, Lauren talks about dealing with bad body image days. Today, Lauren shares some tips on dealing with your bad body image days.Having a Poor Body Image[2:38]Conversations with Ourselves[5:50]Lauren shared a story about the TikTok video where a woman talked about going to the gym. The story revolves around her and the people around her acting rudely about her looks and what she does in the gym. This story concluded that the people around her are a representation of herself. She is having conversations with herself, talking badly about herself. Lauren mentioned that these conversations happen every single day, even the most confident person experiences this.Reference Point[10:19]One of the tips that Lauren suggests is having a reference point to bring yourself back to reality. If you are on a fitness journey, your body changes a little every day. However, the actual changes will be seen weekly or monthly. This means that day to day, you just see the same thing, but you are thinking differently. Having a reference point brings you back to the reality that you are the same person you were that day.Trust in the Process[12:50]You have to remember to trust the process. In the fitness journey, things don't happen instantly, which is why you must trust the process. Lauren mentioned that she understands how people feel because they have worked so hard, so they want the result to happen quickly. What you need to do is to keep doing the right thing and trust the process. Negative Self-talk[16:46]Negative self-talk is a learned behavior, and sometimes it may have come from the parents or something learned over time. Just like negative self-talk, you could learn to say nice things to yourself. This can also create a ‘law of attraction' kind of effect.Closing[20:37]Start thinking about the good things about yourself, your day, and anything else. This will help you from saying bad things to yourself. This will also help you on bad body image days. It will help you in anything like when you feel like a bad mom, or feel bad about your life, etc.Go to https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-fit-mom-podcast/id1639640645 to listen to the other episodes of The Fit Mom Podcast. You can also follow Lauren on her social:InstagramLearn more about coaching opportunities Grab the FREE 7 Simple Food Swaps GuideSubscribe to the show and listen to more episodes on Apple Podcasts or Spotify

The mind works in mysterious ways, and sometimes it gets things wrong. In this mini-series, we explore how our biases and misinformation can hinder our happiness. In today's episode, we discuss reference points. Transcript: Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2 minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life. I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and I was listening to the Yale happiness course by Dr. Laurie Santos and she was talking about how our minds don't think in terms of absolutes, we are constantly judging everything by our own reference. This is why the studies have results when someone making $30,000 a year is asked what would you need to be even happier and they say $50,000 but when you ask someone making $100,000 they say $250,000. Our minds are judging what would make us happier by our surroundings - our reference points. And quite frankly, 50,000 or even 75,000 might make us just as happy. We already know that money doesn't buy us happiness. So we're talking about a REFERENCE POINT as a salient point, (the most noticeable but often completely irrelevant) point against which all subsequent information is compared, because we're judging all the time. So, in the scenario of salary, the reference point is what we used to make. It's not done in absolute objective terms. One of the most famous examples of this is seen through the olympics. We watch these sporting events and some athletes take the podium and some don't. So if I were to show you a photo of one of the greatest swimmers of all time, Michael Phelps on the podium with his gold medal, he would look happy. But what's interesting is the silver medalist looks less happy. But he just won a medal at the olympics, which is a huge deal. And then, if we turn to the bronze medalist, he looks as happy if not happier than the gold medalist. But why? It's all relative. The silver medalist sees a reference point of being so close to winning the gold medal but falling short. And the bronze medalist sees a reference point of not making it on the podium at all and just being so darn happy to be there. All of these athletes are experiencing a different salient reference point. Our minds don't think in terms of absolutes - it's clouded by our salient reference points. Researchers studied olympic athletes in exactly this scenario over and over and what they found was silver medalists were less happy than the bronze medalists over and over again. Today, I invite you to consider your reference points when thinking about your wants. The science mentioned in this episode can be reviewed at: Medvec et al. (1995). As a consultant and trainer, I'm constantly confronted with the concept of Rate of Rise as a superior reference point for improving roast profiles. With our scientific background and strong commitment to only use concepts that are explicitly helpful for coffee roasters to create successful products for customers we have to speak up about the misleading nature of how Rate of Rise often is obsessed by by students all over the world. It is the single most discussed concept that I have to handle during all my courses and dismantle in my students minds before we can get to the userful concepts that actually makes a difference in their lives and are actionable from a business strategic perspective. The content of this blogpost is the result of discussion this with hundreds and hundreds of students and clients so I think it is relevant and useful to make a separate blogpost about it even though it was also dealt with from many different angles in our podcast series about Coffee Science. It will show you how our thoughts are not just ‘our opinion' but deeply embedded in the scientific tradition all the way back to Plato and through the centuries of refinement and improvement of scientific thinking! Where the science podcast series was structured from the point of view of science this article is a good example of how science can be used practically on a single technical subject that has caused quite a lot of confusion. This article is a condensation of the approach I have when the subject of Rate of Rise is discussed during courses and consultancy sessions. To save time and get this subject over with before these sessions we will systematically refer students and clients to this podcast before the event. This week we are looking at the difference between your focal point and your reference point. So often we look at our goals and when things do not line up, we quit. However if we have the right focal point, even when our goals don't align we can keep moving forward. Let's break this down more together and set ourselves up for success on our health journey

The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
A common mistake organizations make with their experience is failing to understand customer expectations. This mistake will lead to customers feeling unhappy and disappointed—two emotions I guarantee won't contribute to your customer-driven growth. Expectations are a form of Reference Point, which people use to compare and evaluate experiences. The expectations are rational, emotional, and sensory, and are an essential companion for customers as they walk your customer journey, making them essential for your Journey Map. What's worse, we aren't meeting customer expectations, at least not according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index. On a recent podcast, we explored how the ACSI is showing poor outcomes for customer satisfaction over the last ten years, a time span that make it impossible just to blame the virus. In this episode, we talk about customer expectations and why so many companies get them wrong. We will also take a look at why we have expectations and where they originate, as well as the reasons we think this way. Perhaps most importantly, we will talk about how to avoid disappointing customers' expectations when you present them your experience. Key Ideas to Improve your Customer Experience Let me start by asking if you have ever been to the Congo? Most people haven't. However, if I asked you what it might be like, what would you say? Some people might say they picture it to be a jungle country. They might use words like green, humid, or lush. Some might say dangerous or sweaty. However, in most cases, they don't know any of this stuff is true. So, how did these images and adjectives get there? My guess is these descriptions come from books or movies people might have read or seen, or stories they heard over the years in school. This exercise demonstrates how customers' expectations develop. Here are a few other key moments in the discussion: 09:33 Ryan explains the theory behind why we need to draw upon our past experiences or construct ideas about new experiences as we go about our daily lives for comparison's sake. 11:32 Colin builds upon Ryan's example about drawing upon experiences by pointing out that the past experience does not have to be in the same industry vertical to be the comparison. 15:13 Colin gets into the importance of understanding customers' emotional expectations as well as their rational ones to deliver an experience that satisfies and delights them. 22:57 We talk about how customers' expectations can change over time and can be reasonable, so it's important not to blame your problems on unrealistic customer expectations. 26:59 Colin and Ryan both share their practical advice on what to do about understanding customer expectations and how to apply it to the experience you deliver.
Hey, this is David. You don't know me, but one day you will. Right now you're listening to a conversation with our good friend Jesse. He asks a mind expanding question to Jony and Jo about how to grow in their respective craft. This episode is so important, because it's about getting back to the beginning, creating like a child, giving yourself permission to push the boundaries, freedom to travel the road alone and excitement to try things you've never done before.
