In this episode of Psyche Podcast, I continue my Philosophy & Solution-Focused Therapy series by turning to Steve de Shazer's essay, “Don't Think, But Observe: What Is the Importance of the Work of Ludwig Wittgenstein for Solution-Focused Brief Therapy?” In it, I explore why Wittgenstein matters so deeply to Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, not because he gives it some hidden grand theory, but because he helps us see why the longing for that kind of theory can pull us away from the living reality of therapy itself. I reflect on de Shazer's argument that meaning is rooted in use, in context, in forms of life, and I consider what that means for a therapeutic practice that refuses to get trapped in diagnostic abstraction and instead stays close to language, relationship, exception, and observable change. Along the way, I make the case that Solution-Focused Therapy is far more philosophically serious than its critics often assume, and that its restraint, its precision, and its attention to what is actually happening in a person's life may be part of what makes it so radical.

Send us a message!Martha Jeffery, Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering in London, joins host Sara MacIntyre, M.A., CCC-SLP, to discuss a qualitative research project exploring parents' and children's perspectives of change following one year of Palin STSC (8–14 years old) therapy. Martha shares the aims and design of the study, which examined how children participating in group or individual therapy, and their parents, described the changes they experienced, and what felt most meaningful.Drawing on thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews, the conversation highlights key themes including shifts in perspective, increased confidence and participation, greater use of skills and strategies, and growing independence and resilience. Martha reflects on how meaningful change from the child and parent perspectives can positively contribute to our therapy development, outcome measurement, individualization, and guide future training and research.Bio: Martha Jeffery is a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist at the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering  in London, UK and she has worked there since 2013.  She started her career as a Speech and Language Therapist in 2008, and before then she had an earlier life in conference organizing and then banking. At the Michael Palin Centre she works with children and young people who stammer and their families, carrying out assessments and delivering therapy individually and in groups.  She also has a smaller caseload of adults who stammer. She is a co-cordinator of the Michael Palin Centre's training programme, which delivers 12 core courses that range from therapy programmes such as Palin PCI, to using psychological approaches such as Solution Focused Brief Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy with people who stammer.  The Centre's training courses reach over 600  speech and language therapists globally each year, which reaches an estimated 6000 children who stammer worldwide annually.  Martha also devises and delivers training programmes - most recently a one-day course on Cluttering.  The third strand of Martha's work at The Michael Palin Centre, is contributing to their research programme and she will be talking about the research project she is currently working on today.Martha has attended additional training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and has an Advanced Certificate in Solution Focused Brief Therapy from BRIEF (London)'s year-long programme.  She is co-author of Solution Focused Brief Therapy with Children and Young People who Stammer and their Parents: A Practical Guide from the Michael Palin Centre (2024) with Ali Berquez.  She is not a person who stammers, but she is married to a person who stammers and is mother to two children - one whose stammer resolved and one whose stammer has continued.

Surveys show there are more people in therapy than ever. On one hand I feel there is more benefit in talking with someone than not. And on the other hand I'm concerned whether all the therapy is paying off. Statistically, mental health continues on a decline. So when I heard about SFBT therapy, I intrigued myself. SFBT is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, defined as a goal-oriented, short-term approach that focuses on identifying a client's strengths and resources to find solutions to their problems, rather than dwelling on the problems themselves. My guest today is one of the foremost experts on Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. Elliott Connie is a respected author, top psychotherapist, and thought leader in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), takes a fresh approach. He has a book, Change Your Questions, Change Your Future: Overcome Challenges and Create a New Vision for Your Life Using the Principles of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy. In his book, Elliott challenges readers to rethink their questions and the thinking behind them, and I resonate with the concepts very much. The idea is using powerful, forward-focused questions that are designed to help you shift your mindset and create meaningful change. The highlights for me were the realization of how much more powerful it is when we think for ourselves and ask questions, rather than be told something. When we are told something by someone else, we can often push back against it. When we consider and come up with an answer to a question ourselves, we listen. We also got deep into the power of knowing and living in accordance with our core values. But not the “big picture core values,” as Elliott points out. We tend to think of beliefs and morality, but where he finds it most powerful is in the day to day values that actually support who we are and want to be. Elliott's book, Change Your Questions, Change Your Future, is available now, and you can connect with him and SFBT at elliottconnie.com Sign up for your $1/month trial period at shopify.com/kevin Go to shipstation.com and use code KEVIN to start your free trial. Send us a textHey listeners, today's episode comes with a bonus—I accidentally turned an interview into a therapy session.Elliott Connie breaks down Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, a fast, outcome-driven approach to change. It's not about problems; it's about moving forward—whether in life, fitness, or anything else. Then we hit a common parenting dilemma: Is screen time really the enemy? Elliott flips the script—what matters isn't less screen time but more family connection, dinner table talks, and real-world experiences (woah, maybe focusing on the solution is really the key here). Positive thinking and the law of attraction? Not magic, not science. They boost mood but won't change your life. Real change comes from defining your goals and making choices that align with them. Are your daily actions moving you forward or just feeding short-term gratification? Fall in love with the version of you that's on track. Success isn't about feeling good now—it's about staying the course.Elliott says winners keep their eye on the prize, even in setbacks. The real challenge isn't morning motivation—it's pushing through when you're drained. And then, the bigger picture. With Donald Trump newly inaugurated in the USA, Elliott drops this: “This is not the country I thought it was.” When did hate become so acceptable? His solution: honor people with love and respect. As you tune out, ask yourself, What outcome do you want? What difference would it make? Quitting is easy. Success means choosing discomfort over and over again. Get addicted to outcomes. What's Inside:What is Solution-Focused Therapy? Is screen time the problem we think it is?How to get addicted to outcomes?Getting through dark times in the world. You might have sensed my hesitation when it came to that conversation about screen time…I need to deep dive into my feelings about this, but it is changing something in me—my reaction to information and what I wanna do with it.
