Not long ago, Bonnie Crombie, Mississauga Mayor and candidate for leader of the Ontario Liberal Party accused Nate Erskine-Smith, another candidate running for leadership of the party, of ageism. Bonnie who is 63 years old, took issue With Erskine-Smith's remarks that, "we should be thinking of this as what kind of party do we want to build for the next 15-20 years.” But, ageism is not only felt by women leaders in the political landscape. They are also experiencing it in other settings. ---- NURSES TO GET AVERAGE 11 PER CENT RAISE OVER NEXT TWO YEARS Libby Znaimer is now joined by Dr. Claudette Holloway, President of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO). Ontario Hospital nurses will be getting a raise which, according to their union (the ONA), will amount to an average of 11 per cent over two years. Ontario hospitals are grappling with a staffing shortage issue and it's so bad that several of them have had to close their ER departments. According to the Ontario Nurses Association, more than 20 hospitals have had to close so far. Many of the staff shortages involve nurses and there are cases where nurses are being asked to pick up extra shifts, handle a very high patient load and are often asked to work outside their specialty. Helen Winter describes that many are leaving the profession due to burnout. She tells us that she has had to cut back on her hours and that nurses have a significant repertoire of skills that can be transferred to other higher paying jobs outside of the hospital. The memo ---- sent out by the Ministries of Long-term care and Health on Jan. 17 to long-term care licensees — says the move is in response to staff shortages due to COVID-19-related absences or isolation requirements. It states that select internationally trained nurses (IENs) who are applicants to the college will be eligible to work in long-term care facilities — but as personal support workers (PSWs) or unregulated care providers.  In its program guide, the ministry also states that the work won't count towards IENs' college requirements to show evidence of practice. They are the “frontline heroes “ of the pandemic. They were also first-in-line to be offered the Covid vaccine when it became available. So, it comes as a bit of a “??? “ when health care workers in Canada are still not rolling up their sleeves. Ontario and Quebec both had announced mandatory vaccines for those workers, who are after all, working with Covid patients. Now both have backed off saying it would lead to thousands leaving the healthcare sector, and potentially leading it to a collapse, although neither provided any detail on their claims. We know there have been thousands of cancelled procedures and tests that were scrubbed because of Covid. But, as the last line of defence against the virus, it might seem strange that these workers would refuse to be inoculated, if not to protect themselves, then perhaps their patients or their families. In this case, we're talking about those who are not allergic to the ingredients in the vaccine. Our Unpublished.vote question asks: Should healthcare workers be vaccinated against Covid to keep their jobs?Yes = 15.5%No =  83.7%Unsure = 0.8%However, you're watching and listening to our show, whether through our social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, or on our podcast channels—iTunes, GooglePlay, Spotify, iHeartRadio and more—I would like to remind you that you can “cast your vote” on this topic at Unpublished.vote, and then email your MP to tell them why.Guests: Doris Grinspun, CEO, Registered Nurses Association of OntarioMarty Moore, Lawyer, Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom Colleen Flood, University Research Chair in Health, Law and Policy, uOttawaReferences:https://globalnews.ca/news/8376304/covid-vaccine-refusal-termination-poll/https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2021/11/15/quebec-judge-rules-provinces-abandoned-health-care-vaccine-mandate-is-legal.htmlhttps://angusreid.org/covid-firing-booster/https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/government-supply-firm-employee-loses-bid-to-halt-federal-vaccination-policyhttps://www.mcgill.ca/facmed-alumni/article/shelter-twitter-stormhttps://www.cmaj.ca/content/cmaj/early/2021/11/09/cmaj.211839.full.pdfhttps://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-quebec-judge-rules-provinces-abandoned-health-care-vaccine-mandate-is/https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-quebec-wont-mandate-covid-19-vaccination-for-workers-in-schools/https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/canada-mandatory-vaccines-covid-19-healthcare-workers-1.6111486https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0196655321002741https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-experts-argue-why-making-vaccinations-mandatory-doesnt-necessarily/https://www.jccf.ca/mandatory-covid-vaccine-faqs/

Libby Znaimer is joined by Ontario Minister of Long-Term Care Rod Phillips (Ajax) followed by, Sharleen Stewart, President of SEIU Healthcare, Donna Duncan, CEO of Ontario Long-Term Care Association, NDP MPP France Gelinas (Nickel-Belt) and health critic and Dr. Doris Grinspun, CEO of Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. Yesterday, Minister Phillips announced that the province is providing $270-million dollars in funding towards hiring 4,000 LTC staff by the end of the fiscal year. This commitment is part of the longer-term goal of providing nursing home residents with an average of 4 hours of care per day by the year 2025. The province wants to add four hours of care in the Ontario Long-Term Care Act. The money announced yesterday will bring the average direct care for each resident up to 3 hours per day by March 2022. At least, that is the plan. And, last week, Minister Phillips announced that the province is mandating COVID-19 vaccination for all LTC staff with a deadline for Nov. 15. Phillips details the reforms he's been working on since he took over the LTC file four months ago.

Whatever in the news has you talking, Libby is ready to take your calls. Should COVID vaccines be mandatory for healthcare workers? This is among the questions this week that got the phones ringing at Fight Back. Premier Doug Ford has so far said no, but he's also said he's listening to the health expert and will take his guidance from them. And in fact, this week, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario wrote to premier Ford and asked him to make COVID vaccinations mandatory for healthcare workers. And the head of the RNAO, Dr. Doris Greenspun, told Libby that she is always reassured by Premier Ford who says he's listening to her and taking her guidance. There was another proposal for provincially issued vaccine passports or certificates this week, this time from members of Ontario's Science Advisory Table. In fact, the scientific director of the table Dr Peter Juni told Libby this is the way to go so that we don't get a mish mash of private businesses trying to issue vaccine passports. And what about the U.S. border closed to Canadians for non essential travel now until at least August 21st? Is that messing with your plans, or are you waiting to head stateside anyway?
