The Knoydart Peninsula is a serious contender for the most beautiful spot in the UK. Remote and tranquil, it's nestled in the West Highlands of Scotland, surrounded on one side by sea-lochs and stunning views across to the Isle of Skye, and on the other by a series of rugged Scottish mountains. The scenery is as beautiful as it is difficult to move through. It's just as well there's a beautiful view to reward the runners at the top of every one of those monster climbs. In this episode, Will talks to three runners who recently completed the Highland Ultra, Beyond the Ultimate's three-day, 125-km race around that beautiful corner of Scotland. Among the trio of guests are our two winners, both of whom came into this event with very little experience of races of this kind. There is plenty of useful advice and inspiring positivity from all of these guests so settle back and let them tell you how they came to conquer the Highland Ultra against the odds. If you've signed up for a similar challenge, if you have a mountain in your sights or a massive race to prepare for, and you are starting to worry that you may have bitten off more than you can chew, then listen to this episode and you'll feel like you can do anything. Aum was running in support of Richstone Family Centre - an organisation dedicated to treating and preventing child abuse and trauma. Entries for Highland Ultra 2025 are now open. In this episode, our host Danny Brister, Jr., interviews Fox and Rob Richardson about their book Time: The Untold Story of the Love That Held Us Together When Incarceration Kept Us Apart. Follow our host Danny at his new substack: https://dannybjr.substack.com/Follow Fox and Rob Richardson at their website: https://foxandrob.com/More info about our guest: "Twenty-one years of love and commitment is the sign of a great relationship by most standards. But twenty-one years of love and commitment, separated by America's most violent maximum-security prison while raising six boys as a single mom and relentlessly advocating against a system designed to keep her husband in prison, can only be described as radical love.In his early twenties, Rob Richardson was fighting to get his business off the ground to provide for his growing family, yet was turned down by every bank for a loan. So, in the heat of desperation, he attempted to rob one, and was sentenced to 61 years in prison due to an overzealous prosecution. This was his first offense. Rob ended up serving more than two decades in America's bloodiest penitentiary, Angola, until receiving clemency in 2018. In their new book, Time: The Untold Story of the Love That Held Us Together When Incarceration Kept Us Apart (Baker Books, February 7, 2023), high school sweethearts Fox & Rob share how they defied all odds and kept their family together through years of challenges. "
Show Notes:“You don't just wake up one day and say hey I'm gonna go rob a bank; there are things that kind of ultimately ease you up to that space.” [18:42] As Fox and Rob tell the story of how they met, their future seemed so bright. When did robbing a bank become a considerable option and what happens to take your mind to go to such an extreme place? Rob explains all of the circumstances and exhausted options that derailed their family plans.“The American Dream Syndrome is a science, it's the foolish desire to achieve the American Dream by all means necessary.” [22:10] Rob's story is like many others, who are fueled by success with clouded judgment. An explanation for their choice to rob a bank is bound in this definition of what he also calls Urban Survival Syndrome.“Everything that we needed, we already had. We had each other and we had our freedom.” [24:12] Fox shares that it was an immediate realization that they had just destroyed the very thing they had been trying to save. Not days later, or at the trial sentencing, but as soon as she heard the police sirens that day.“This is the 21st century, in the United States of America, and Systemic Racism is still going on.”[33:30] Fox and Rob are college-educated individuals, Rob served in the US Navy, and this crime was his first offense. Yet he was still sentenced to 60 years in prison. The sentencing story is one that will shock and enrage you at the injustices still present. “To be free is to free others." [54:57] Rich Family Ministries is the social justice ministry that Fox and Rob began after his release, helping others with law education and information that may have found themselves in a similar situation. No one better than this family can prove that time is valuable, and since beginning the ministry they have saved a collective 3300 years of served prison sentences. “Love conquers all; it is the most divine chemical in the universe.”[58:50] Their new book, Time, is Fox and Rob's untold story about love and strength. And while this interview might not be like others, the message of love is more powerful than ever. This episode is quite possibly the most powerful, eyeopening and heart wrenching that I have hosted yet. As I welcome on our new friends, I found that I quickly realized how little I know about incarceration, the justice system and what families endure going through it. Through this conversation my hope is to give us all a new layer of education, information and hopefully in turn compassion and a call to action as community. You have have noticed that there were a few weeks off from the show AND if you listen you will hear big news as to why we took an unexpected break in the show! Through this episode we discussed what Rob & Fox believed about the justice system before their own personal experience and the truths they faced on the other side of them. Their profound story of getting married, opening a business and the despair that led to taking money by force . All of which led to their arrest and the beginning of their experience with the justice system. "It is a horrible place when you as an individual feel like you have run out of options". How we can all relate to and have compassion for the human reality of despair. How community came alongside them in the midst of incarceration and solo parenting. How we as community can come alongside families in similar situations as well. The truth behind the way Hollywood depicts prison time. The reality of incarceration and why it's important to care. How a story of despair can be rewritten to a story of purpose and hope This powerful story makes room for all of us to grow in understanding on a difficult topic, yet, one that is so necessary for us to be aware of as part of community. When we make plans for the future, we often want God to sign on the dotted line and agree to everything we've laid out. Yet when those plans fail, we find ourselves turning to God as a last resort. And as our guests this week will attest, He is faithful to lead us back to a path that we're meant to follow, whether we realized it or not. Fox and Rob Richardson, a couple from Shreveport, Louisiana, open up about the act of desperation that led to their incarceration, and what happened to their lives and the lives of their family in the process. This is yet another example that there is nothing that God cannot shine through. The twenty-one years that kept Rob separated from his wife, Fox, and their six sons was long enough. As Rob survived two decades at America's bloodiest penitentiary and Fox raised their sons solo, they never stopped fighting for Rob's freedom and for their futures against the statistical odds. All the while, it was love that carried them through. The Academy Award-nominated documentary Time introduced audiences to Fox and Rob, who riveted audiences with their relentless fight for each other and justice, despite America's broken prison system. This book tells the rest of their story. In alternating voices and intimate detail, Fox and Rob reveal what the film does not--how a person can cultivate the radical love needed to see them through any hardship and how miracles can happen on the way. As they peel back the layers of their unforgettable love story, you'll discover the secrets of perseverance and the power of a resilience that is founded on faith in a God who never gives up on us. Rob details the reality of long-term incarceration and talks about the importance of supporting people who are serving a prison sentence. As you listen, I hope you remember that God's grace is sufficient and that in our weakness the Lord is made strong. Bob Seidenschwarz and Rob Richardson from SG Long talked about the current economy and what to expect in the future.
My guest today is Rob Richardson, the CEO, and co-founder of Disrupt Art, a Global marketplace created to revolutionize the impact of Art, Music, Fashion, and Film. DisruptArt aims to curate an interactive space for artists, collectors, and activists to revolutionize the impact of art. Artists sell their pieces as digital creations through blockchain technology. Their vision is to create a community where spoken word artists, musicians, entrepreneurs, photographers, and crypto artists intersect, creating dialogue about social impact, contemporary art, and the blockchain. They believe artists deserve more equity, and it's why they ensure artists receive a majority of the funds and always receive a royalty for their work. That is why they created a new Black-owned NFT minting platform, DisruptArt. They focus on equity, diversity, and bridging NFT technology to the world. They work with activists, allies, and organizations to build a more equitable future using NFTs. Rob is also the founder of Disruption Now Media, a platform that connects entrepreneurs, artists, and leaders through interactive events, educational content, podcasts, and virtual and in-person summits. In episode 139 Kerel speaks with Rob Richardson, Founder at Disrupt Art, a company that aims to curate an interactive space on Web3 for artists, collectors, and activists to revolutionize the impact of art. Rob's love of activism comes from his parents - his father who was very involved in both the labor movement as well as the Civil Rights Movement and his mother who was the founder of a restaurant. After being told by his 8th grade teacher that college wasn't a path he was going to be able to follow, his mother said otherwise and Rob went on to study at the University of Cincinnati. There he also started the school's first chapter of the NAACP and went on to become more involved in politics and public service and eventually moved into the Web3 space founding Disrupt Art. In this talk, Rob speaks on the importance of the ownership of platforms, for artists, especially brown and black artists to be fairly compensated for their art, and the massive opportunity people have now more than ever to build and cultivate a community online in a way that they see fit. “This is the opportunity. This is the time to build. And if we want to have a better way to close the income gap, this is not a panacea, but this is a big tool that will provide opportunities to build wealth and build communities in a way that's never been possible.” Timestamps: :38: Rob Richardson, Founder at Disrupt Art shares what Disrupt Art is and why it was founded 3:30: Rob talks about where he's from and how that impacted his engagement in activism 5:30: Where Rob's spark of activism came from 6:33: Rob breaks down blockchains, Web3, NFTs, smart contracts and benefits of secondary sale rights 10:30: Why it's important for black and brown people to be involved in Web3 and newer technologies 14:51: Resources to use for education on Web3, NFTs, smart contracts, and more 16:01: Rob shares why he loves being a founder and the new and exciting opportunities Web3 is bringing 19:39: Where Rob draws inspiration from and the opportunity of setting our own destiny 20:26: A story of perseverance and the importance of telling our own stories and not being held to default systems 24:01: The three apps Rob uses to stay active in Web3 and a secure way to communicate about all things tech 25:18: Elon Musk buying Twitter, the importance of ownership of platforms, and being educated about Web3 28:04: Where to find Rob and Disrupt Art
