Did you know that Rhode Island native, James "Lou" Gorman was an American baseball executive, and the former general manager of the Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox? He spent more than three decades in baseball operations, as a general manager, assistant GM, farm system director or scouting director, and at the time of his death he was the Red Sox' executive consultant for public affairs with an emphasis on community projects. He also was the coordinator of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, to which he was inducted in 2002. Now, for our feature story: Westerly High's football team really didn't have a signature win on its mantle heading into Friday night's Division II contest with Barrington last week. Now, it does. Westerly used an opportunistic defense and the running of junior Zack Tuck to shut out the Eagles, 28-0, at Augeri Field, clinching a spot in the D-II playoffs. Barrington came into the game atop Division II-A with a 4-1 league mark. The Eagles were 5-1 overall. Westerly coach Stanley Dunbar said: "Barrington is a good team. When you watch them on film, they are probably the hardest-playing team I've seen," "They fly around and play with great effort. Our kids bounced back from last week's loss (27-20 to Classical). They played their hearts out today." Westerly's first three league wins came against teams that are a combined 4-10. Tuck scored touchdowns on runs of 3, 5 and 55 yards. He finished with 230 yards on 26 carries and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the year. It was his third 200-plus rushing performance of the season. He now has 1,047 yards with 13 rushing touchdowns. "It was a perfect night. We wanted it and we needed it," Tuck said. "We knew we could beat these guys. They are a hard-nosed football team. But we wanted to set the tone tonight for the rest of the season." Dunbar said it was the best win of the season for the Bulldogs. "I think we are getting better. Classical is a good football team and we played them tough and could have won the game," Dunbar said. "The boys just came out tonight, stepped it up and brought it home." The US military instills important values in all of its members. Values like honor, courage, and commitment ensure that troops are dedicated to the success of the mission, and to the survival and success of each other. Every successful member of our armed forces has accepted these values and several others. When faced with real combat situations, these seemingly academic concepts become critical to survival. Some individuals rise above others and embody the very spirit of the soldier, and frequently those Americans are responsible for saving missions and saving lives. When the actions of an individual are so courageous and so honorable, the nation has the option to award that soldier it's highest honor, The Medal of Honor. Today we salute a recipient of this highest honor, Staff Sergeant Ronald Shurer of the United States Army Green Berets. In 2008 Ssgt Shurer was the medic in a small unit of Green Berets dropped in remote northern Afghanistan for a mission. While climbing a mountain the unit fell under intense and unexpected fire from a very large force of about 200. During the fight Ssgt Shurer lowered injured soldiers back down the mountain with makeshift slings and secured their evacuation by helicopter. He then returned to the pinned down unit and fought by their side replacing some of the injured men, while continuing to treat injuries to others. He was even struck in the helmet by a bullet during the battle. Due largely to his actions, alongside his unit, No Americans were killed in this bloody 5-hour battle. Staff Sergeant Shurer who graduated from Rogers High School in Puyallup and earned a degree from Washington State University before joining the Army, continued his service to the nation by becoming a Secret Service Agent after he left the military. On Monday, October 1, 2018 Staff Sergeant Ronald Shurer was awarded the Medal of Honor. The Medal was presented by the President of the United States in a White House ceremony.Sadly, Ronald Shurer, The Soldier, Secret Service Agent, Husband, and Father of 2 passed away in May of this year from lung cancer that he had battled bravely for years. This nation can never do enough to honor a soldier like him. This is why today we Salute Staff Sergeant Ronald Shurer of The United States Army, Recipient of our nation's most distinguished award, The Medal of Honor.

ROGERS, Minn. — Where is this week’s episode of The Rink Live video podcast coming from? Jess Myers and Mick Hatten were at Rogers Activity Center, near Rogers High School. The high school is across the parking lot. The Royals boys hockey team opened its season with an 8-1 home win over Anoka on Nov. 21. The Rogers girls hockey team is off to a 3-1-1 start. The reporters discuss a good weekend for the University of Minnesota (5-6-3) men’s hockey team, a couple of close losses for the St. Cloud State men’s hockey team, the challenge for the Gophers as they host North Dakota (10-1-2) this week and some historical perspective on the Huskies’ 2-6-4 start. Oh and Hatten's brain flickers at a couple points. The Nebraska Omaha forward whose name eludes me is Austin Ortega, who had an NCAA Division I record 11 game-winning goals in 2014-15 and 23 career game-winners for the Mavericks. Ortega, who helped Nebraska Omaha to the Frozen Four in 2015, was an All-NCHC First Team selection as a senior in 2016-17 when he had 20 goals and 47 points. In his career, Ortega had 70 goals (second in program history) and 139 points (fourth) in 147 career games. He is playing this season for Eisbaren Berlin in the German league. All this, a look at some of this week’s top matchups in college hockey and more.

Check out our full shownotes page here, for all the info and links to the books we discuss. Joining us is Bethany Kauffman, Media Specialist and Book Club Advisor from Rogers High School. This is another one of those leadership competencies that may not seem important at first glance. But it is an important tool people can use to meet the needs of the communities they are serving. Everything we discuss here goes back to getting the job done, and flexibility is one of the tools you need for that! What do we mean by flexibility? For us it means the ability to change course when necessary to achieve your goals, and changing plans to be successful.
