I used to get nasty poison ivy as a kid. It would bubble up and itch like crazy. The worst case I ever got was on my face. My eyes were puffed nearly shut in the heat and humidity of July. It was torture. Thankfully, the doctor gave me a steroid to help heal it. You get the point. Now my son gets it bad. Last summer, he attended a survival action camp for Royal Rangers and in that camp learned something amazing. Jewelweed is a natural remedy for the poison ivy infection. The best part is that God placed the Jewelweed next to the Poison Ivy! The cure was with the poison. This is amazing and frustrating at the same time, as I never knew this and had to endure harsh Poison Ivy every summer. Napoleon Hill says this in "Think and Grow Rich". "Every adversity has with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit." The Poison Ivy is the adversity and the Jewelweed is the seed of an equal of greater benefit. COVID-19 has been the most recent and impactful adversity. What seeds have you discovered of equal of greater benefit? I've shared mine several times. I dug into the science on how to kill Coronavirus and in that research, I built my "9 Mistakes in Disinfecting" presentation to serve my community. This has already lead to cleaning business growth and actual dollars, many of which are recurring profits!

Jason was inspired by his parents to work hard and serve others. He was active in multiple activities throughout his youth to include Awana, Boy Scouting, Royal Rangers, Church, and wrestling. Jason recieved scholarships and offers to other colleges, but West Point and military service drew his attention. Jason struggled with some aspects of West Point at first, but his quiet deliberate strength and his ability to work with others helped him grow, face his challenges, and succeed. Jason branched Air Defense Artillery and posted at Fort Riley, Kansas with 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry. Jason would deploy with 1/1 ID to Ramadi and Habbaniya, Iraq in 2004-2005. Jason served as QRF in support of Marine and Army forces during a good portion of the deployment. When he redeployed Jason struggled to reintegrate. The ADA moved away from Bradley Linebackers and Jason was still feeling the psychological impacts of his time in Iraq. Jason was medically retired from the military and returned with his family to his hometown in Pennsylvania. Jason was able to turn the corner on his experiences in Iraq and move forward with his wife and family being active members of their community. This is his story. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joe-harrison0/support

I have told this story so many times to friends and on other podcasts over the past 6 years since I've heard it. The Country Preacher teaches a powerful model for decision-making that I have used in the toughest of decisions.  Are you familiar with a Venn Diagram or the overlapping circles? Look it up if you're not familiar. Picture 3 circles overlapping in a way where there are 3 areas where any 2 circles intersect and only 1 area where all 3 circles intersect. Here are the 3 circles the Country Preacher used: Desire - Do you want to do it? Whatever the decision is, do you want to do it. Are you excited about the potential of i t working out? Are you passionate about going that new direction? Open Door - Is the opportunity available right now? Or is the door closed right now?Peace - How do you feel in your spirit about this decision? Does it give you anxiety or total peace? If you have a scenario where you have the desire and the opportunity is open, but there is no peace, do not do it.If you have a scenario where you have the peace and the opportunity is open, but you don't want to do it, do not do it. If you have a scenario where you have the desire and the peace, but the door is closed, do not do it. In this case, pray through the closed door until it opens (if it ever does).Let's use an example of a difficult decision our family faced in 2017. Do we leave 16 years of family and business roots we've forged in Upstate New York and move back home to the Philly Area? And by the way, I heard this message in 2016 and used this decision-making process to make this vital decision. We had a deep desire to go back to our hometown and be with our family. We missed Sunday dinners after church with my Nana and Pop-Pop after 18 years of living in other states. We missed my younger siblings having babies of their own and spending time with them. Yes, we had desire. After much prayer and talking as a family, we felt total peace that this was the right time to go back home. The kids were excited about it. We were excited. Sure, it was stressful to think how it would all work out. But that wasn't up to us to make work. We could only take action on the desire and peace we had. Was there an open door? Flashback. We wanted to go back to Philly just about every year we were in New York. But there wasn't an open door. This time there was. We prayed hard and long about this part. We'd have to sell the cleaning business. I'd have to replace myself as a Royal Rangers leaders. We'd need to find somewhere to live. In October 2017, we got the desire and prayed. In November, we were offered a free place to live with our family of 7 for a year with Teresa's mom. In December 2017, I replaced myself as a Royal Rangers leader. And in January, I took Ian to Dallas to a Debbie Sardone event called Speed Cleaning. Ian decided that he wanted to buy the cleaning business. There was the last part of the door opening. This one was hard as we didn't get the answer right away. We had to take action. The open door came. We've been out of New York for over 4 years now and it seems like a dream that we were ever there.  We are so thankful to be back home. We got to spend Sundays with my Nana and Pop-Pop for 2 years before they both passed. We have been to birthday parties and beach days with my 3 nieces and 1 nephew. We have seen and rebuilt relationships with friends and family members that we haven't seen in years. I am back in a position of leadership with the Royal Rangers and the new cleaning business is growing! This decision has been blessed because we sought after God's Heart on the matter. We made sure there was intersection of desire, an open door, and peace.Read the rest of this article at the Smart Cleaning School website

This episode was inspired by my friend and upcoming guest on the Smart Cleaning School. Vincent Pugliese is a coach, speaker, author, and mastermind leader. I was at his Total Life Freedom Retreat in St. Augustine in February as I've mentioned in a few recent episodes. It was so helpful and inspiring to be around 20 other entrepreneurs from around the country with ranging backgrounds and experiences. Together, we brainstormed and helped each other solve many of our current challenges. I'll be diving into one major takeaway I got in an upcoming episode called, "Yeah, That's Fear". Stay tuned. I want to share a breakout session that Vincent lead that really stretched me. It's called Putting Someone Over. Vincent recounted the many people that have lent their reputation and credibility to him over the years to give him an advantage or opportunity that he wouldn't have received on his own. It's a phrase that comes from the WWF, where Vincent used to be involved as a press pass photographer. Vincent asked every one of us in the room after he gave credit to the amazing people that have put him over. "Who has put you over? " This is important. Our lives can get easily wrapped up in ourselves and our own goals. But what about those that helped you massively to get there? Have you thanked them?I want to take the rest of this podcast to personally thank the people in my life that have put me over. Nancy Marcinko - You encouraged a shy high school boy to pursue his creativity in art. You put me over in my confidence.Jim Claeys - You took on a young, naive Edison Engineer and showed me how to get things done. You put me over in project management. Joe Schirripa - You drove me all over the east coast to help us with our business and you mentored a young, immature man into a relationship with Jesus. You put me over in faith, family, and business mindset.Brett Hart - You offered us a cleaning opportunity and referred us to Coldwell Banker. You put me over in starting our cleaning career.Jil Denn - You mentored a new cleaning business owner to be an effective vendor for Coldwell Banker's 500 realtors. You put me over in cleaning business acumen.Vincent Pugliese - You have lent your credibility to introduce me to countless new friends at events and have helped me through difficult business decisions. You put me over in my Wealth of Connection.Dave Hallenbeck - You taught me everything I know in effective team leadership in the Royal Rangers. You put me over in servant leadership.Debbie Sardone - You encouraged me to go beyond my own cleaning business to help others that are struggling. You put me over as a cleaning coach. There are so many others I could thank. But that's not what this is about. We all have dozens of people that have helped us along the way. The 8 people that I just mentioned were integral at various points of my life in using their platform and reputation to lift me up to them. It's a special gift that these people have given me and I wanted to thank them publically. Who has put you over in your life and career? Have you thanked them? If not, why? You can stop this podcast now and let them know. Go for it! Thank them!

February 8th marks the anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts, one of America's most beloved youth organizations. For over a century, presidents, CEOs, astronauts, and athletes have begun their journeys as Scouts. But on this anniversary, the future of this storied organization is far from certain. The Wall Street Journal reports that since 2008, the Scouts have lost nearly a million members and now face lawsuits over the sexual abuse of children and cover-ups that also go back decades. With the Mormon church announcing in November that it plans to pull nearly half a million additional members out of the Boy Scouts, bankruptcy or even the end of the organization seems somewhat likely. Those of us who have watched this sad story unfold can't help but notice that the Scouts' quickening decline coincides with the group's decision to betray its founding values. In 2013, the Scouts began accepting openly gay members and then leaders. Shortly afterward, they opened their ranks to transgender members, and then—despite the organization's name—to girls. Families who might have turned to scouting to guide their young men into adulthood are left wondering: What do the Boy Scouts really have to offer? As one dad who grew up in Scouting told WORLD magazine, “I realized it wasn't the same organization...” The loss of the Scouts is just another blow in a culture already failing young men. So-called “deaths from despair”—drug overdoses, alcoholism, and suicides—are at a historic high, and young men have been the hardest hit. TIME magazine reports that as of 2017, the male suicide rate was three times higher than the female rate, and youth suicides are at their highest point in 20 years. Many of these are attributable to loneliness and a sense of alienation. More and more, young men especially feel that they don't belong and aren't welcome anywhere. It's a process that starts early, in subtle ways. More than ever before, schools cater to girls, slashing recess and P.E. time and requiring longer hours sitting at desks. Around 13 percent of boys are now diagnosed with ADHD, and a growing number of them are put on medication like Adderall and Ritalin. In our misguided, one-size-fits-all understanding of equality, there's almost nowhere boys can go to be with other boys. And, of course, the epidemic of fatherlessness is at the root of so much of the despair we see around us. In our one-size-fits all society, boys are not just struggling, they're falling into despair. We talk a lot about gender here on BreakPoint—how God's creation of human beings as male and female is good, beautiful, and life-giving. Often times, we're responding to stories about the transgender ideology, or same-sex marriage. But the plight of boys, including the fall of the Scouts, hits even closer to some of us—especially for those of us raising boys. That task is harder than ever before, but it's not impossible. Despite the failing institutions around us, alternatives exist for parents committed to raising their sons to be godly young men. Trail Life USA is an organization formed by ex-Scouting families and they're dedicated to Christian values. It's been profiled in WORLD magazine, and has a membership of around 26 thousand nationwide, many of whom describe it as the spiritual successor of the Boy Scouts. And there are other organizations too, often hosted by churches, like the Royal Rangers, the Royal Ambassadors, and the Troops of St. George. Many congregations also host custom-made programs tailored to connect boys with their dads, or boys without fathers to men who can mentor them. As sad as the Boy Scouts' decline is, parents of sons do have other options. And by God's grace, churches and parents who believe what the founders of the Scouts believed: that boys are real, that they have a unique and God-given calling that should be cultivated, will continue to offer these alternatives. After all, if the church doesn't, who will?
