Pastoring and shepherding a church comes with both rewards and challenges. A recent Lifeway Research study shows that stress, discouragement, and loneliness are listed among the top mental challenges for pastors. Similarly, a recent Barna study shows that U.S. pastors, overall, are feeling lonelier and more isolated from others than in years past. While struggling with loneliness and burnout themselves, pastors are often the first ones people in their congregations turn to when they are struggling with mental health issues. What is attributing to these struggles? And how can we encourage pastors to prioritize their own mental health in order to be able to help their congregations?Joining us on today's episode is Mark Dance, director of pastoral wellness for Guidestone Financial Resources, and Kristen Kansiewicz, who serves as an assistant professor and program director of the graduate counseling program at Evangel University.

At the top of the show today, we introduce Dr. Mike Rakes -- President of Evangel University -- who discusses how he has handled the chaos that has gripped university campuses across the nation. I asked him multiple questions about how best for Americans to make good choices for their children regarding secondary education. When asked how this Christian University is tackling the toxic social environment pitfalls around the nation, he explained what we all should do. It's an interview full of wonderful information about the major issues we face today both domestically and worldwide. Democrats are struggling on multiple levels of how to handle the pending formal and legal process of formally making Joe Biden the Democrat presidential candidate. Believe it or not, Democrats have to jump through hoops to ensure that happens. (It's a "timing" issue) It was announced today that Israel, in their war with Hamas, has taken the southern Israeli city of Rapha. Rapha is known to be the largest haven for Hamas terrorists. Israel declared they would not stop this war until every Hamas terrorist is eliminated.
This week on Real Talk with Rachael I'm having a conversation with Dr. Robert Paul. Robert Paul is Vice President of the Focus on the Family Marriage Institute. He is both a marriage therapist and an accomplished speaker who presents regularly at professional conferences and enrichment events both nationally and internationally. He has co-authored six books, including “The DNA of Relationships,” with Drs. Gary and Greg Smalley, and “9 Lies That Will Destroy Your Marriage: And the truths that will save it and set it free,” with Dr. Greg Smalley. He is a former professor at Evangel University where he taught in both the biblical studies and psychology departments, specializing in Marriage and Family Counseling, Human Sexuality, and the integration of faith into all areas of life. Bob and his wife, Jenni, live in Springfield, Mo., have been married for over 43 years. They have four children and seven grandchildren. Key Points from Our Conversation: Addressing deep-seated desires and achieving relational success offers relief and freedom. Recognizing and breaking the reactive cycle in relationships can empower individuals to improve their dynamics by understanding and halting predictable conflict patterns. Group support can provide reassurance that marital challenges are universal and not unique. Faith and personal transformation, as highlighted by Robert's and his wife's journey, play a crucial role in sustaining relationships. Utilizing available resources for counseling and self-improvement, such as those mentioned in the episode, can be immensely helpful. Emotions are morally neutral and serve a purpose in signaling areas needing attention; understanding this helps in better managing them. The care cycle emphasizes the importance of balancing personal care with nurturing the relationship, leading to healthier interactions. Practical advice on nurturing oneself and the relationship, including suggestions for summer activities and self-care strategies. Recognizing the subtleties of negative thoughts and maintaining a 'no losers policy' promotes a healthier team dynamic in marriage. This week, we bring you a podcast episode from the Good Dads archive. Originally recorded in 2019, our guests, Brian and Drew, discuss the challenges and rewards of new parenthood. New dads will relate to big changes in sleep habits, working collaboratively with the mother of your child and more than a few dirty diaper horror stories. Our Guest: Drew Dilisio, LPC Drew Dilisio is the former director of counseling services at Good Dads. He is a graduate of Evangel University's Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, a husband and father. He is now a Behavioral Health Clinician at Jordan Valley Health Center in Springfield, MO. Our Guest: Brian Mattson Brian Mattson is the associate pastor at the Downtown Church in Springfield. A father of two now, Brian served on the Good Dads board until 2024. Show Notes (4:05) we do a nighttime routine ... we really try to get in a peaceful mood. And my wife will put on some lavender soothing lotion on her while she's singing to her, and we've just stuck to a schedule. (5:06) every book seems like it's different, with the recommendations and the best practices, so we would do one for a month with no results ... (and we'd say) "let's tweak this little thing," and then we'd do that for three weeks. (8:08) For someone who's only drinking milk, it's incredible what comes out the other side (in her diaper). I'd say that's pretty gross. (10:11) As you're changing the dirty diaper, she smiles at you—in the eye, she locks eyes, smiles — and proceeds to have another ... "elimination" as you're hurriedly trying to put on a clean diaper. The Good Dads Blog

When John the Baptist began his ministry, he proclaimed, “The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire” (Luke 3:9). The crowd responded by asking, “What should we do then?” John's answer? “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same” (3:10–11). We see a similar pattern in Acts 2, where Peter's messages about “the last days” results in a community that “sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need” (2:17,45). Why does Luke link eschatology and ethics in these two passages? Why does he emphasize sharing? And how should we apply this message today? Those are the questions I'm asking Dr. Joseph Lear in this episode of the Influence Podcast. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Dr. Joseph Lear is director of Theology and Global Church Ministries at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri, and pastor of Preaching and Theology at Resurrection Assembly of God in Iowa City, Iowa. What does worship look like in the life of a 21st century believer? How do we as leaders lead others into worship, in spirit and in truth? What are the contents of a corporate worship gathering? Is it all old stuff? Is it new stuff? So many nooks and crannies we can peek into today! LTS host Bridgette Tomlin brings back ministry wife and worship leader Kelly Woods to rediscover the art of worship.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Kelly Grizzle Woods was born and raised in Manassas, Virginia, in a close-knit, Christian family with her older sister, Jo Ann. They traveled in music ministry throughout her childhood and upon graduating high school, Kelly attended Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. She met Ron Woods in her sophomore year, married him in January of 1989 and together, they have pastored three church communities in Arkansas, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Her greatest joys are her three adult kids---Ryan, and his wife Danya, Lindsay, and her husband Wes, and Connor, and his wife Abbie. Kelly has served in music + worship ministries in each of the three churches where they've pastored and also enjoys sharing her testimony of God's faithfulness in her life wherever she goes. She's an introvert on some level who has grown somewhat comfortable with being in the spotlight but can quickly refuel in the bliss of solitude, traveling, a great meal, an occasional spa day and, most of all, time with Jesus. Norma Champion's career started in the 1950s, hosting a children's television show on KY3. After returning to school to finish her degree, she worked as a professor teaching broadcasting at Evangel University. In a twist to her career, she was elected to Springfield City Council in 1987, which launched a decadeslong run in politics, including as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives and Senate. There, she addressed issues relating to health care, family and children, and education. She's accumulated a long list of honors, but she says reflecting on her career now at 90 years old, it's the memories around the personal connections she's built that are the most significant. In this episode, Norma and I talk about how her faith influences her life, the impact of the death of her first husband and losing her vision, and what she still hopes to accomplish.

Today, Lauren Hanson, Functional Medicine Holistic RN, joins me on the podcast. She shares her family's incredible story of how they began their holistic journey. After her husband became seriously ill and having no answers after seeing multiple doctors across multiple states, a friend suggested essential oils. Lauren did some research and decided to give it a try and within a week or two her husband began seeing improvements and now, eight years later he is 90% better. Lauren became passionate about helping educate individuals about natural alternatives. Her passion grew into starting her own Functional Medicine Holistic practice. Holistic nursing focuses on looking at the client as a whole, working toward finding root cause, and not just symptom modification. Lauren has helped children with emotional dysregulation, cancer patients needing extra support, supporting women through menopause, and so much more. She is determined to help you find the answers you need to start moving forward on your journey. Please listen to Lauren's story, be inspired, and head to her website to find out more. After listening to this episode please share with whoever you think could benefit from hearing more about this amazing natural alternative to managing your health care. I became a registered nurse in 2007 graduating from Evangel University with my Bachelor of Science in Health Care and Cox College of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After graduation, I went to work in Columbia, MO on the Oncology unit where I also spent time working as a Supportive/Palliative Care RN for Boone Hospital. After 8.5 years, my husband and I, along with our growing family, moved near St. Louis, MO. It was then I decided I wanted to pursue a different type of nursing. While I loved bedside nursing, at the time I still had little ones at home. In 2013, my husband's health started to decline and the traditional western medicine did not provide answers nor solutions. It was then that I started researching about natural solutions and preventative health. Since that time, my curiosity became my passion. In the summer of 2021, I decided to combine my experience, education and passion in holistic nursing. I completed my certification in Holistic Nursing program from Pacific College of Health and Science in the Spring of 2022. In April of 2022, my dreams became reality when I opened my office for Hanson Holistic Health in Cottleville, MO. Healing the whole person is a process, but having someone there to listen, encourage and empower is so needed in healthcare today. I look forward to connecting and encouraging you on your path towards healing.

Story of failure: Losing my composure during competition (and cursing). My name is Jeni Hopkins and I was a coach for 24 years and have loved every minute of it. Yes, of course, there are a lot of highs and lows in coaching, but the rewards and the privilege of working with such outstanding student-athletes, assistant coaches, managers, athletic directors, athletic trainers, officials, table workers, and many more are what I valued the most. The intangibles and intricacies of sports deserve to be explored and a voice needs to be given to coaches, players, officials, and others that play such vital roles in the arena of sports. This is about giving that voice. I am also currently the Media Coordinator of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and have a lot of pride in the promotional mission and advocacy of that organization for coaches. I have been on their executive board for over 20 years. Check out our website at www.mobca.org.I am also a proud member, and president, of the board of directors of the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame. This is a non-profit organization that recognizes excellence in sports and in turn raises funds for youth sports. Our website is www.springfieldhof.com.Another adventure is that I am a color analyst for Mediacom and MSHSAA.tv and am thrilled to work with them during basketball season while getting a front row seat to the best basketball! I have also worked games, both play by play and color analyst, for Evangel University, Southwest Baptist University and Drury University. I also broadcast the Norm Stewart Classic on ESPN3 from Mizzou Arena. I love broadcasting basketball and have also enjoyed bringing volleyball and track and field to the air waves, too.I also am the founder and director of a basketball luncheon every two weeks, Court Talk, during basketball season. This luncheon promotes basketball in Springfield and includes all of the city high school and college coaches, plus Southwest Baptist and College of the Ozarks. For more information, click here.
