Safety Tools, and Players Are More Important Than The Game, with Sarah Lynne Bowman

Transcripts available at diceexploder.comSafety in RPGs and larp is a huge topic, one I've wanted to cover on Dice Exploder for a long time, but one I've avoided it because it feels hard to approach inside the “pick one mechanic” format of this show. Even more than most mechanics I cover on Dice Exploder, I feel like most safety mechanics are in conversation with each other in both logistical ways—how they compliment each other—but also in the philosophy behind their existence in the first place, how including these mechanics at the table is ideally a statement about how we'd like to treat each other both at the table and away from it. So today we're gonna name that underlying philosophy and call that our mechanic: “players are more important than the game” is something I hear in conversations around safety all the time, and that's this episode. To break it down, I'm joined by Sarah Lynne Bowman. She studies all this professionally, and she has so much to say and to share about how safety tools work in theory and in practice, how no tool can ever guarantee your safety (even if we should still definitely use them), and how building good communities around our games is at least as important to safer play as any individual tool. Finally, content warning in this episode for mention of sexual assault and emotional abuse in rpg communities. We don't get deep into any specifics, but they come up.Further ReadingYour Larp's Only As Safe As It's Play Culture by Troels Ken PedersenDice Exploder on accessibility in game designCreating a Culture of Trust through Safety and Calibration Larp Mechanics by Maury BrownLarp Design, the bookBibliography from Sarah Lynne BowmanKoljonen, Johanna. 2019. “Opt-out and Playstyle Calibration Mechanics.” In Larp Design: Creating Role-play Experiences, edited by Johanna Koljonen, Jaakko Stenros, Anne Serup Grove, Aina D. Today, we're immersing ourselves in the chaotic world of "Day of the Dead" (1985), the third chapter in George A. Romero's iconic zombie saga. Now, if you're expecting a highbrow cinematic masterpiece, well, you might want to adjust your expectations. This film is a rollercoaster ride through '80s zombie mayhem with an extra side of cheese. Picture this: the world has plunged into post-apocalyptic chaos, overrun by the undead. Our story revolves around a ragtag group of survivors who have sought refuge in an underground bunker. But don't expect a harmonious community down there. Dr. Sarah Bowman, portrayed by Lori Cardille, is doing her best to maintain some semblance of order, but it's easier said than done. Let's talk practical effects because, in the '80s, CGI was just a sci-fi dream. The mastermind behind the gruesome makeup and gallons of fake blood is none other than Tom Savini, the guru of gore. Limbs get torn apart, heads go rolling, and blood flows like a crimson river. Surprisingly, these practical effects have aged surprisingly well, given the film's age. But what sets "Day of the Dead" apart is its exploration of the human psyche under extreme pressure. Imagine being trapped in a bunker with people you can't stand, surrounded by hungry zombies. It's like a psychological experiment with the undead as the unwitting subjects. This film delves into themes of isolation, paranoia, and the struggle to maintain one's humanity when the world has gone to hell. It's like a psychological thriller with a generous serving of horror. Now, let's be real here. "Day of the Dead" won't win any awards for acting or complex plotting. The characters can be over-the-top, and their decisions sometimes defy logic. But you know what? It's all part of the charm. This movie fully embraces its '80s roots and revels in its quirks. If you're in the mood for an old-school zombie flick that's both gory and delightfully cheesy, "Day of the Dead" deserves a spot on your watchlist.

Welcome to the PRmoment Podcast.Today we're talking about PR degrees - or rather the lack of them! To confirm there are still a number of excellent PR degree courses available but there are far fewer PR undergraduate places in the UK than there were 10 years ago.On the show this week we look into the reasons behind this, asking whether it is a UK-centric trend and whether it's a decline that can be reversed.Over the past 5-10 years we've seen a massive reduction in the number of undergraduate PR degree places available and as a result, this has seen a big reduction in the number of PR degree graduates coming into PR.Before we start - just to flag, no one is suggesting that PR degrees should be the only way into PR - that would be ridiculous - but today we're going to look into the reasons why PR degrees in the UK are less popular than they were and whether this is a trend that can be turned around.Without pointing out the obvious, while PR degrees have become less popular, PR has grown significantly in the last 5-10 years and this has led to a significant increase in demand in the PR labour market. This increased demand for PR talent has outstripped supply, leading to a shortage of talent being the number one growth limiting factor for most PR firms and in-house teams. On the show to discuss this are Tasos Theofilou, principal academic in Public Relations at Bournemouth University, Dr Martina Topic, course leader, Public Relations with Journalism at Leeds Beckett University and Dr Sarah Bowman, senior lecturer, Organisational Communications at Northumbria UniversityBefore we start the PRmoment Awards 2023 are now open for entries - do check out the awards site PRmomentAwards.com for all the info you need. Thanks to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors, The PRCA.Here's a summary of what Tasos, Sarah, Martina and PRmoment founder Ben Smith discussed.3 mins Is it right to say that there are fewer PR degrees in the UK now than at any point in the last 15 years?“There are not many pure PR degrees around anymore but there are 232 courses from 59 Universities which have “PR” in the title.”4 mins What are the reasons behind the decreasing number of pure PR undergraduate courses?“I blame the increasing fees for the decrease in PR degrees”5 mins Many PR students didn't really know what PR was… that lack of awareness has become more of a problem now students have to pay for their course.6 mins “Schools are the ones that don't recognise PR…our employment rates are nearly 100% but you can't study (a subject) that you don't know is there.”10 mins For the merged degrees - what is the ratio between PR and the other elements of the course?12 mins Did UK PR try and kill the PR degree?“We experience a love and hate relationship with the (PR) industry sometimes”“In every field, you have people who have very strong opinions and they shout the loudest! But I wouldn't say the majority of the industry is against (PR) education, I don't think that's true ”“One thing that is missing from the industry is engagement with events for young people to come and learn - that is what PRSA in America is doing well.”

There is an animal cruelty controversy that is striking the largest dairy producer in Indiana and one of the largest in the country.  Video released by a group called Animal Recovery Mission showed cases of abuse and cruelty in the treatment of calves at Fair Oaks Farms.  There was also drug use by some employees caught on camera.  On one side of the issue is Richard Cuoto, founder of ARM who has been called the Batman of animal cruelty and on the other side, Mike McCloskey, founder of Fair Oaks Farms who runs Fair Oaks' Dairy Adventure which some have called the Disneyland of agricultural tourism.  Sarah Bowman, environmental reporter at the Indianapolis Star, joins us to break down this story. Next, we now have two cities on the books with laws decriminalizing magic mushrooms, Denver and Oakland.  There is an important distinction however, these laws just make it a lower priority for law enforcement, you can grow them and possess them, just not sell them.  However, some lawmakers see it going the way of cannabis into legalization. Join Taylor Ellwood of Magical Experiments and Azucena Alev, John Karaisik, and Dr. Sarah Bowman as they discuss role playing games and magic. We'll explore if RPG's can be a gateway to pop culture magic and what rpg's can teach us about magic and what magic can teach us about RPG's. We'll also discuss how to adapt RPG's to pop culture magic. Sarah Lynne Bowman, Ph.D., is a role-play studies scholar, participant-observation ethnographer, and game designer. She teaches as an adjunct professor for several institutions in English, Communication, and Humanities.  John's journey began when he gained interest in Chinese martial arts. His studies led him to Daoism - one of the most profound spiritual systems in existence. Daoism opened John up to the esoteric world, and he's never turned back since. He now practices a variety of rich spiritual systems, including Gnosticism, which he studies under a Gnostic bishop. Azucena Alev was born and raised in Austin, Texas, where she currently lives and works. After picking up the occult practices at a young age, she began reading the Tarot and then expanded to other methods of divination. Her knowledge of the divinatory arts, along with her collection of decks, has grown ever since.  In an effort to share her knowledge with others, she co-founded the Austin Spirituality Group, a free study group in the heart of Texas.  Get 10 Practical Magical Tools for Achieving Consistent Results

Staying connected to today's busy kids who are balancing school, sports and social schedules, is a challenge most parents face. Two Middle School moms have launched a website, www.kidsofftthecouch.com that gives parents great ideas for creating family time beyond soccer games and birthday parties. Sarah Bowman and Diane Shakin have spent years exploring the city with their kids, but what makes their ideas unique is that each of their adventures is inspired by a fantastic film. After screening “A Secret Garden”, they explored a real secret garden at The Descanso Gardens in Pasadena. After watching All The President's Men with their Sixth graders, they toured the Los Angeles Times' printing facility and learned how the paper arrives on our doorsteps each morning. Every week, Kids Off The Couch introduces families to a new film and adventure, but also provides plenty of details for parents to go beyond the basics. For example, the moms suggest conversation starters about each film: “Freaky Friday” is a perfect conduit for discussing body image with pre-teen girls and “Goal: The Dream Begins” opened the floodgates to a conversation with young boys about the ambition and opportunities available to immigrants in Los Angeles and the U.S. In addition, Kids Off The Couch offers up book lists that relate to each film contributed weekly by “The Center For Excellence in Education", Lucy Rafael.  If the adventure involves watching E.T. and visiting the planetarium, parents will find a well-edited selection of books on space - appropriate for kids in pre-school, elementary school and middle schoolers. While it may sound unusual to advocate getting on the couch to get kids to unplug, Sarah and Diane insist that film opens the door to culture and family discussions. After a long week, it's cozy to flop on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and watch a film that makes everyone happy. From husbands to grandparents, family film night has become a cherished part of these moms' family life. As the two moms are fond of saying, "sometimes you've got ON the couch with your kids - to get OFF the couch!" Since launching the site, they have written about nearly 100 film and adventure pairings they've road-tested with their families. Past adventures are listed in the Archives section of the site, and if parents sign-up, they'll receive a free, e-mail every week with a fresh idea to get kids off the couch and into their world.
