It's a big week in Black cinema as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit theaters Friday. But on the same day, another film dropped that may be just as powerful in its message about Black moviemaking. Is This Black Enough For You? pays homage to the decades of creativity that made the celebrated Marvel movie possible – and deeply influenced cinema as we know it. Host Brittany Luse sits down with Elvis Mitchell, the longtime film critic who directed the documentary. They dig into the ingenuity of Black filmmakers through the 1960s and '70s, the overlooked contributions of Blaxploitation films and the one Black classic that led to the demise of an era. Then, Brittany talks about a different kind of homage with Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle – the brains behind the sitcom South Side and the variety show send-up Sherman's Showcase. The comedy duo reveal why writing jokes around specific references can appeal to all kinds of audiences, and how parody can be a form of love. “Necessity,” said Bashir Salahuddin, about his path to screenwriting, as he and his writing partner Diallo Riddle were limited in which roles they were given, even in sketch comedy performances in LA. The duo felt like there had not been a “boisterous black sketch comedy show in LA” since Keenen Ivory Wayans' In Living Color (1990-1994). “We had goofy sketches, like Malcolm X doing stand-up and then we started doing some video and viral stuff. That was how David Alan Grier and Jimmy Fallon found us, and helped us get our WGA cards.” One of their first paychecks actually came from Bernie Mac. “I believe he gave us $750," said Riddle, “which at the time felt like we were millionaires. That buys a lot of wigs and make-up,” he added, as they put all of their money back into the business. Eventually, the writers landed jobs on shows like Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Maya Rudolph Show, Maya & Marty, The Last O.G., and Sherman's Showcase, with Co-Creator credits for the new sketch comedy show South Side. Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson returns to the pod for the first time since Mark 1 to talk about an equally old-timey take on a beloved character: HBO's dark take on Perry Mason before he became the gold standard of TV defense attorneys. Is this imagining of his life before Raymond Burr canonical? Did we need to see that level of post-violence gore? And does EVERY cell of this show's being hate the LAPD? (Not that we're complaining about that.) Then we went Around The Dial with Sherman's Showcase, Legendary, Taste The Nation, and Lenox Hill, and Richard announced Tara's upcoming Forcening before humming a few bars of "La Vie En Ro" in his Sopranos Canon presentation. It's crazy to think that at only 31 episodes in, Cello has been lucky enough to have another FE artist join me for a chat. Phonte and Zo! have worked together extensively over the years via The Foreign Exchange, and we dive deep into his new project(s) FourFront and their era-and-genre-hopping work on the new IFC series Sherman's Showcase. We chat a bit about how the guest list on this new record came together and we reminisce about how we both encountered 27 inches of snow back in Maryland 10 years ago. It's an interesting chat about how we got from that point to where he is now, which is making music for two decades and a legion of fans around the country. Ladies and gentlemen, Cello gives you multi-talented producer and instrumentalist Zo! In his words, he is TAHD. But READEH.

John couldn't make it last week for our Veronica Mars discussion, but he fired a baby's laser-beam eyes at Amazon's latest original, The Boys, which we all quite liked.
