Jennifer and Kevin Sluder share their journey from North Carolina to Los Angeles and how they built Sunshine Boy Productions into a growing independent film company. Kevin's early recognition as a screenwriter opened doors, but instead of waiting for projects to materialize, the couple chose to produce their own short films. Their first project ignited a passion for hands-on filmmaking and laid the foundation for their creative partnership. As their experience grew, so did their ambitions. Jennifer stepped into marketing and branding while Kevin transitioned into directing with Heartless, a Poe-inspired horror short now touring festivals. Their story highlights the importance of networking, strategic growth, and creating opportunities instead of waiting for them—offering a practical blueprint for filmmakers ready to take control of their own careers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Writer and director Morgan Cooper on turning a self-funded Bel-Air short into a series, building creative audacity before opportunity arrives, and staying resourceful across drafts, collaboration, and a children's picture book. You'll learn:Why “imperfect action” can be a practical antidote to creative paralysis, especially early in your craft. How he found a compelling dramatic lens by stripping away sitcom expectations and focusing on character archetypes and real-world stakes. What it can look like to invest commercial income back into self-initiated work to build a body of proof. Why “waiting for permission” often hides fear, and how starting anyway can change what's possible. Why the “angle” of your idea matters, and how recalibrating it can be the difference between a draft that stalls and a draft that lands. How identifying the “big question” of a story can give your scenes direction and your revisions momentum.Simple ways to keep the creative channel open using a notes app, project scrap bins, and a journaling method that functions like index cards. How collaboration becomes part of the craft when you treat writing as iterative perspective-building, not a solitary performance. What writing a picture book can teach about economy, structure, and building an arc inside tight page limits. How designing a kid-led mission around resourcefulness can create momentum and emotional payoff in short form.Resources & Links:

Happy Wednesday! Emma Steiger brought her short film “Wait To Tell Mother” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2025 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Screenplay – Short Film, as well as the Filmmakers Awards for Outstanding Short Film – Drama and Outstanding Director- Short Film – Drama. Considering Emma was the director, writer, co-lead actor and one of the producers on the film, and it is no surprise that their name appears on two of those awards! Emma was a delightful presence at the festival and even tolerated my overly paternal response to the film. If you cannot guess, “Wait To Tell Mother,” deals with family dynamics and someone like myself had to personally thank Emma at the festival for making such a wonderful film about a father's role. I do love all the mother-daughter stories at the festivals, but give me a lovingly portrayed father- daughter story and I melt. I hope you enjoy the interview! What happens when a screenwriter stops waiting for permission and makes the film herself? In this in-depth conversation, writer, filmmaker, and actress Clarissa Jacobson shares her remarkable journey from acting to screenwriting, and how creating her short film Lunch Ladies changed everything. From self-funding her first short to navigating festivals, building confidence, and finding her creative voice, Clarissa offers hard-earned wisdom for writers at every stage. Clarissa talks candidly about: Choosing screenwriting over acting and letting go of sunk costs Why making a short film can transform a writing career The brutal (and rewarding) realities of self-funding your work Lessons learned from eight years of promoting "Lunch Ladies" Comedy horror, collaboration, and trusting your intuition Finding the right creative partners & why writing together works Why writers gain more respect when they make something real This episode is a must-watch for screenwriters, indie filmmakers, and storytellers who feel stuck waiting for a break and are ready to bet on themselves instead.
This week we're unpacking the bizarre online conspiracy that Selena Gomez has been “cloned,” and why the theory says more about the internet than it does about her. We talk about the deeply rooted misogyny behind the panic whenever a woman's face changes, the fear of watching women age in real time, and the impossible standard that women must stay frozen, flawless, and familiar forever. At what point did natural evolution become suspicious? When I was trying to figure out more about Justin Arnold for the "5 Time Champion" episode, this here short really stuck out. The poster and the name say "watch me, bro". So, we watched it. Cause we like Justin. And now? We like this short film and are looking forward to doing another episode on "Whoopin'" whenever that comes out (probably after I wrote this, but before this episode comes out).Justin Arnold wrote, directed and starred in this. He's just a dude, spottin' a lady, and going for it. Does she wanna hear any of his nonsense? Probably not, but at least he seems sweet instead of gross. Katie Folger plays the lady he lasers in on. Welcome to The DMF — Discovering Meaning in Film and Acting. I'm Justin Younts, and in this episode we explore the evolving landscape of women in film — particularly in non-traditional and physically demanding roles — with filmmaker Jaze Bordeaux. In our conversation, Jaze shares his journey championing stories centered around women in combat sports and mixed martial arts — a concept that, when first pitched in 2016, was met with skepticism from distributors and industry decision-makers. At the time, many questioned whether audiences would support films featuring women in these kinds of physically intense, traditionally male-dominated roles.Despite the resistance, Jaze believed in the cultural and cinematic potential of these narratives and continued pushing forward. Today, the industry has shifted dramatically, with a growing wave of films highlighting women in combat sports and other unconventional spaces. We discuss:Women in non-traditional film rolesMixed martial arts films and combat sports cinemaIndustry skepticism vs audience demandProducing female-driven sports storiesIndependent film challenges during the pandemicFilm festival recognition and awards circuitsJaze also reflects on the success of his projects, which have earned over 30 awards — including honors at the prestigious Palladino D'Oro International Sports Film Festival. While accolades were never the goal, they stand as validation of the passion and perseverance behind these films. We also touch on the broader momentum building around stories like Queen of the Ring and Halle Berry's MMA-focused work, signaling a larger industry shift toward inclusive, boundary-breaking storytelling.Whether you're an actor, filmmaker, or film enthusiast, this episode highlights how persistence, vision, and advocacy can reshape what kinds of stories get told — and who gets to lead them.Join us as we explore the rise of women in combat sports cinema and the future of non-traditional roles in film.Check out these links:http://jazebordeaux.com/https://www.facebook.com/jazebordeaux/https://www.instagram.com/jazebordeaux/https://www.threads.net/@jazebordeauxhttps://www.tiktok.com/@jazebordeauxhttps://x.com/jazebordeaux00:00:00 - Introduction00:00:05 - Advocacy for Women in Non-traditional Roles00:00:44 - Initial Resistance to Women's Mixed Martial Arts00:01:50 - Market Reception and Success of Women's Mixed Martial Arts00:04:20 - Accolades and Awards for the Film00:07:40 - Experience at the Palladino Doro International Sports Film Festival00:13:09 - Discussion on Short Film 'Starry Eyed'00:15:08 - Character Development and Casting Decisions00:16:32 - Involvement of Film School Graduates00:17:35 - The Evolution of Storytelling and Directing00:18:42 - Supporting Other Filmmakers and Directors00:19:55 - Introduction to 'Let Go'00:24:52 - Success of 'EFC' and Future Projects00:26:06 - Introduction to 'Genesis'00:26:13 - The Concept and Evolution of 'Genesis'00:30:25 - Clarification on 'The Arrival' Reference00:31:09 - Vision for 'Genesis'00:31:17 - The Timelessness of 'Genesis'00:32:17 - Advice for Storytelling00:32:31 - Closing Remarks

This week we're unpacking what it really means to manage relationships as an adult because apparently no one warned us it would feel like a full-time job. We break down the Ashley Tisdale “toxic mom group” drama and how navigating friendships at different life stages can quietly shift power dynamics, expectations, and resentment. From there, we dive into the Brooklyn Beckham family drama and talk about the complicated process of becoming your own person outside of your family (especially when love and control start to blur). It's an honest conversation about boundaries, independence, and learning when to adjust relationships instead of abandoning them altogether.---Stream Hannah's album, PHASES!Watch Emily's Short Film, All We Were!Emily's TikTok ShopEmily's Substack: third martini thoughts---Emily's Captivation: Tell Me LiesHannah's Captivation: His & HersShop CLEARSTEM and 15% off with the code GALSGUIDE at checkout---Welcome to The Gal's Guide — a weekly dating and lifestyle podcast created to empower radical self-love and bold relationships. This week we officially close the book on Nicolas Cage and open the door to our next cinematic obsession: Tom Cruise. We talk about why he's the natural successor for our watch‑a‑thon, what makes him such a fascinating screen presence, and how we're tackling his filmography from the very beginning. We also dive into Stranger Things. The characters, the themes, and how the show evolved across four seasons - before taking a quick look back at our January watchlists to see what actually stuck with us.Plus, we debut our first ever Short Short Film Film Review, kicking things off with The Second Time Around (2025). And to start the Cruise journey properly, we revisit his blink‑and‑you‑miss‑it debut in Endless Love (1981).Movies, TV, short films, and the start of a brand‑new actor deep dive. We really cram it in this week.

This week's episode is a full pop culture catch-up, bouncing from awards season chaos to celebrity soft launches and New Year reality checks. We break down the Grammy nomination picks, Oscar noms, and why Sinners deserves Best Picture (no notes), plus unpack the absolute audacity of Wicked getting shut out. We spiral over Harry Styles' rumored new album (Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally), what his next tour could look like, and why it already has us emotionally budgeting. Speaking of budgeting, we also get real about saving money in the new year — while watching Timothée Chalamet finally make his love for Kylie Jenner public. Culture is moving fast, our opinions are strong, and yes, we're talking about all of it.---Stream Hannah's album, PHASES!Watch Emily's Short Film, All We Were!Emily's TikTok ShopEmily's Substack: third martini thoughts---Emily's Captivation: PoniesHannah's Captivation: SO CLOSE TO WHAT??? Happy Friday, Friends! Aaron Bennett brought his film “Jokers Wild” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in December, 2025 and took home the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Director of a Horror Short as well as the Grand Jury Award for Best Sound Design, Short Film for his sound designer Matt Broadfoot. I'm happy to say that this is Aaron's second appearance on the Discover Indie Film podcast, though this time he flew solo. Back in 2023 Aaron was part of the podcast for “Good Counsel,” a short film that he wrote for producer & actor Chandra Bond that was directed by David J. Levine and starred Chandra along with Janelle Jones and Matthew Keefe. Amusingly I had no idea that Aaron had been on before! I'm going to guess that my poor memory is not just due to my advancing age but also that it was a five person Zoom. If Aaron had been on the mic in person back in 2023 as he did for this podcast, I swear that I would have remembered.
