Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
2020 is nearing a close. And with it, the Crooked Table Podcast is almost finished with its ill-timed deep dive into the Harry Potter franchise. In 2010's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, the stakes have never been higher. We knew a fresh perspective was required to deliver the exciting, frank conversation this series of episodes needs. And so Lyndsey Cole joins the show to break down whether this penultimate Harry Potter adventure achieves the epic scope it aims for. We'll discuss which young star is actually the weakest of the three actors, how Deathly Hallows Part 1 emphasizes character over action, and what sequence is perhaps the best bit of filmmaking in the entire series. The ultimate battle of good and evil -- or at least the lead-up to it -- is afoot. So pull a chair up to the Table and join us for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. SYNOPSIS Without the guidance and protection of their professors, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) begin a mission to destroy the Horcruxes, the sources of Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes) immortality. Though they must rely on one another more than ever, dark forces threaten to tear them apart. Voldemort's Death Eaters have seized control of the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, and they are searching for Harry -- even as he and his friends prepare for the ultimate showdown. This week we're putting Sabiyha On Repeat!Sabiyha is a singer-songwriter, and has been called the next big thing in pop by Earmilk! With beautiful honest lyrics, that are coupled with her Guyanese heritage and the sounds of London from Choice FM and Channel U, we couldn't agree more! This week we speak all about Sabiyha’s songwriting process, and using lyrics and music as an outlet. We also speak a lot abut collaborating as Sabiyha works with her long time friend, producer, and collaborator, Drew Jodi - plus we discuss her new single ‘Do I Matter’, released just a few days before this episode! Plus, we talk about the the magic that is pop music, and how it’s changing from a cheesy manufactured sound to something that encompasses a lot of hard work and genre-defying moments. Each month this year, we're going to revisit an episode from the 260+ episodes in the AirGo Archives and bring that conversation back to the forefront. This month, we're revisiting one of the most impactful moments in modern social movement history–the encampment at Standing Rock in 2016. Kiss and a cohort of other Chicago folks brought supplies from Freedom Square in November, and had the privilege to spend a few days there. Upon their return, Kiss sat down with Kristiana Colon, who had been with him on the trip, to talk about the experience. Carl and Todd welcome a returning guest: Ismael Hernandez. He’s the executive director of the Freedom and Virtue Institute and author of Not Tragically Colored. Ismael joins in to discuss the current state of racial tension and politics in America. His experience growing up with Marxist ideals, and--later in life—joining a religious Marxist group gives Hernandez special insight into the topic. Although we uphold the dignity and sacredness of every human life and want to affirm that black lives matter, Ismael suggests that the movement known as “Black Lives Matter” (BLM) harbors some troubling beliefs. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
The end is drawing nearer as our ill-timed Harry Potter series trudges ahead. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince may opt for love-potion hijinks over grim flashbacks. But the movie still gives audiences a delightful turn by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent, potions galore, and a taste of the Harry-Dumbledore buddy movie we could have gotten instead. Kai Yaniz returns to the show after reading the books for the first time just a year ago. And she has some thoughts on how director David Yates adapts the source material. We'll cover Draco Malfoy's moral dilemma, Voldemort's dark past, and how Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince keys up the epic two-part conclusion to The Boy Who Lived's magical saga. SYNOPSIS As Death Eaters wreak havoc in the Muggle and Wizard worlds, Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for students. Though Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) suspects there are new dangers lurking within the castle walls, Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) is more intent than ever on preparing the young wizard for the final battle with Voldemort. Meanwhile, teenage hormones run rampant through Hogwarts, presenting a different sort of danger. Love may be in the air, but tragedy looms, and Hogwarts may never be the same again. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
The real-life political climate bleeds into the Wizarding World this week. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is very much a political commentary. So guest Amy Otero and I did our very best to stay focused on the movie at hand. As it turned out, neither of us realized just how relevant director David Yates' first Harry Potter movie would be. If Year Four represents Harry's loss of innocence, then this next film sees the boy wizard and his friend brave the dark and complex real world for the very first time. We'll talk about how Dumbledore's Army speaks to today's world, why Imelda Staunton's Dolores Umbridge is worse than Lord Voldemort, and what Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) brings to the group. So get ready to be inducted into a secret society of wizard revolutionaries because darkness is on the rise. It's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. SYNOPSIS Now in his fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) learns that many in the wizarding community do not know the truth of his encounter with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Fearing Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) is after his job Cornelius Fudge (Robert Hardy), minister of magic, appoints Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. But her teaching is deficient and her methods cruel. So Harry prepares a group of students to defend the school against a rising tide of evil. This episode, we return to Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for an in-depth chat about Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In many ways, Year Two feels like the end of an era for the franchise. Director Chris Columbus left after this point, taking the warm and fuzzies largely with him. And the late Richard Harris makes his final appearance as Albus Dumbledore. Teri Sears joins the show to help us unlock Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We'll address why the movie is perhaps too slavish to J.K. Rowling's novel, how it marks the series' first incremental steps into the dark, and which character is shockingly devoid of much-needed development. So brush up on your Parseltongue and tame that bloodthirsty beast if you can. Oh, and enjoy our in-depth discussion on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Next month, we're heading straight for Azkaban prison! SYNOPSIS The second installment of boy wizard Harry Potter's (Daniel Radcliffe) adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, based on the novel by JK Rowling. And because we can all use a bit of silliness right about now, the Crooked Table Podcast is setting aside the usual format for a timely jaunt into the world of magic and illusions. No democratizing the film criticism conversation this week. And this week's special episode isn't even (exclusively) designed to be a tie-in to our just-launched Harry Potter series. Rather, the concept is directly inspired by a longtime friend and recurring guest of the show. The Famous Ashley Grant returns for a third (or fourth) time -- no one really knows -- to discuss her thoughts on the wackiest unofficial holiday, reveal why she prefers magic and illusions over pranks, and tease her latest project. Then we'll discuss some of the best movies featuring witches, wizards, magicians, and illusionists. Spoilers: The Boy Who Lived does get a special mention. So take your front row seat to a podcast episode the likes of which you've never seen, er, heard. And let us dazzle your ears with a fun, laid-back chat about April Fool's Day and all that it entails. Stay safe and sane out there, folks! We had a fantastic conversation with our friend and fellow podcaster, Rachel Nielson of the “3 in 30: Takeaways for Moms” podcast. Rachel has been a guest on our podcast (see Episode 055) and this time we were HER guests! We loved the conversation so much that we’re publishing here as a bonus episode. We share some insights from our own personal experiences with anxiety that we hope will be helpful, whether you personally relate … or perhaps the insights will help you understand those around you who might be faced with this kind of challenge. If you work on SEO with larger publishers, you know there are unique dynamics that make approaching search its own beast. Whether it's training writers, solving for Google News, optimizing for quick answers, or internal linking, these problems aren't straightforward to solve. In this episode we talk with CNN's Upasna Gautam on exactly these dynamics and dig into her history doing SEO for Mashable, PC Mag and other publications just like it. She shared about being prayerful in new situations and about how to advocate without labeling your child. Audra also believes in not being afraid to stop doing something that isn’t working for your child. Sometimes we don’t have all the answers for our children, she shared. We can just love them. Spiritual Help with Mental Health She has learned to rely on the Lord for help every step of the way. You’ll also hear how Audra’s journey mothering Lena has helped her be in tune with the Spirit and her own instincts. She said, “I think as mothers, we need to trust our gut. If we don’t feel like something is right for our child, we’re probably right.” We discuss how being in tune with the Spirit is work. Valerie Cuevas has maintained her focus on Jesus despite the many ups and downs she has experienced in her life. After being a pseudo-single mother with a husband going through medical residency, Valerie suddenly found herself facing her husband’s terminal illness and death. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, her second time battling the disease, just six months after her husband’s passing. Valerie is now remarried and blending a family of six children. She continues to see her role as a mother shifting and changing. Valerie tells how she has learned to embrace change and let go of expectations. She talks about how her focus on Jesus helped her as a single mother. Even though she couldn’t always pinpoint the ways He was helping her, she knew He was there. Valerie is real about the anger and frustration she felt towards God after her husband’s death. She is also candid about the way Christ continued to reach for her in her doubt and struggle. She discusses the many miracles she saw, especially after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Through all of the changes of motherhood, one thing has remained constant for Valerie–Jesus Christ has been there for her. In 2010, my guest, Erica Kiefer, and her husband experienced the death of their first child, Ty, who was only 4 1/2 months old, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. In the interview, Erica shares how she found healing and hope and turned to God despite the grief. Personal + Unique Communication with God Erica discusses how she used her talent for writing to feel healing and hope as well as the Spirit after Ty’s death. Her experience illustrates well God is a personal God. He can use our gifts and abilities to communicate with us in a unique way. At one point, Erica felt abandoned by God. She shared the surprising way God helped her through a friend and a Disney movie. She expresses how Heavenly Father can use anything to help us, even an animated Tarzan movie! How to be an Intuitive Friend Throughout the interview, Erica mentions “intuitive friends” who were there for her. We discussed what it means to be a nurturing friend to someone who is grieving. Erica noted how helpful friends brought her into their spiritual life. Healing Miracles We discuss how Erica found the courage to have another baby and how becoming a mother again (four times) was both healing and fearful at the same time. Erica talks about how her perspective on miracles has changed since losing her son. She said, “The miracle is just seeing that God lets you go through that journey and helps you to grow but also doesn’t let you do it without giving you the sustenance and the help along the way and so much love.” Hope When You’re Grieving the Loss of a Child Erica offers hope to others who are grieving. She knows life can never be the same after losing a child, but she has learned things do get better and healing is possible. “Healing comes in pieces.” It doesn’t happen all at once. Ultimately, Erica knows God does His part to help her in motherhood. She knows she can turn to Him and He is there. Arguably, the thing that has changed the most in the past five years in the SEO world is keyword research. If you aren't doing it correctly, your process is likely wildly inefficient if possibly not working at all. The go-to voice on keyword research in the SEO space is Nick Eubanks. Nick, founder of From the Future and co-founder of Traffic Think Tank, continually brings great insights on that side of things. That's why it made perfect sense to have him on Content and Conversation to talk the state of things, share a lot of great tools, and also dig into domain acquisition strategy, too. Enjoy the talk! In episode 67, I am excited to be interviewing my husband, Tim Trendler. We discuss how we have navigated spiritual differences throughout our 22 year marriage. You will learn quickly in this episode that Tim is definitely the fun-loving, outgoing partner in our marriage. I am more intense and a deep thinker. We aren’t perfect, but we have learned to help each other develop spiritually and respect our different approaches to gospel living. Looking back, I can see how our differences actually make us a great team. In the episode, Tim and I both share the spiritual promptings we experienced that led us to marriage. You’ll even find out why Tim didn’t talk to me for 3 weeks after we got engaged! We also talk about our two very different perspectives on teaching a lesson at church and why both approaches work. Tim discusses the positive side of having differences. He shares how our children have benefited by seeing two different approaches to spirituality. In addition, Tim gives his take on the best thing you can do when you differ with your spouse spiritually. Tim offers his answer to the final question I ask every guest and shares his perspective on how God has been his partner in fatherhood. I will admit it was harder than I thought to interview my spouse. My goal was for this episode to be more of a conversation than an interview, which means we got off track a few times and I had to do a lot of editing.
