#TWIT80s. Talkin' about all the songs that peaked in popularity on the American pop music charts "This Week In The 80s", the 3rd week of May. I rank my favorite 80's K-Tel albums. The unsung heroes of "Bette Davis Eyes". Two different superstar duets that "haven't dated well". The theme to my 6th grade graduation. The debut of Van HAGAR! Janet Jackson goes top 10 for the 1st time. The colossal flop that was... "Hands Across America". U2 gets their hit. The 1st "hair metal" top 10? The New Jack Knockoff who got life in prison for arson! PLUS - the story of "Don't You (Forget About Me" - one of the most enduring classics of the 1980s. All that and so much more. Over 2 hours of incessant babbling about the 80s. Thanks for listening! Listen to my older episodes too. The goal is to talk about ALL the songs that ever hit the charts in the 80s. He's kind of a big deal.- More about how brains develop.- A twitter thread about Sarah's brain surgeon.- The kind of Amnesia in books and movies isn't real, but in case you were wondering, all about global amnesia and aphasia.- Jen & Sarah have seen the 80s version of Overboard 100 times, and the 2018 version no times.- Speaking of Pregneisa... on the podcast I Don't Even Own a Television, these two guys mostly read it to make fun of it, but then listen to just this snippet of Jeb Lund TOTALLY GETTING ROMANCE.- Kylie Scott does write about zombies, and threesomes, and rock stars, and getting with your Dad's best friend.- Jen did write about Lies as an example of an Unreliable Narrator, but she still enjoyed the book!- Jen couldn't locate the future/present/past thread on twitter, but this is a placeholder in case she ever does.- No one liked that Chris Pratt movie.- All about that incel bullshit.- The Silent Towns is a short story by Ray Bradbury in The Martian Chronicles---which Jen really liked for the most part! Try There will Come Soft Rains instead.- The Last Man on Earth is a TV show and While You Were Sleeping was a movie.- Jen likes the scummy, sexy white boy thing Matthew McConaughey has going on.- "Don't You Forget About Me" is the theme song to The Breakfast Club. No one had amnesia in the movie, they were just teenagers likely to be shitty to each other.- What's Fair Use?- Buy buttons from Kelly and shirts from Jordan.- Ashley from Southern California was blooded by The Duchess War by Courtney Milan- Next time on Fated Mates, we'll be reading Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 2018 46:43

“So” by Peter Gabriel Bruce is excited about this blockbuster hit album. After four solo albums without a name, the record company finally persuaded Peter Gabriel to name this fifth album. So is a synthesizer-heavy album influenced by world music. It shows Gabriel's experimental side, but it was a more approachable album than his other releases, and it was a huge hit in the mid-'80s both on radio and MTV. Gabriel went from a cult star to a mainstream star in the rock genre very quickly with this five-fold platinum album. There's really not a bad track on this album, and the majority of the songs received airplay. Join us as we have a BIG TIME with this SLEDGEHAMMER of an album! “In Your Eyes” This song leads off side two. Gabriel wanted to make it the last song, but the bass line is so strong that it needed to be near the front of the album to give the record stylus room to vibrate. This track became popular after the release of the movie "Say Anything." “Red Rain” Red Rain This track leads off the album. Gabriel wanted it to "crash at the front." Stewart Copeland (Police) does the symbol work at the front of this dark, melancholy song. “That Voice” This one qualifies as a deeper cut. Nice bass work by Tony Levin on this heavily layered exploration of conscience - the voices in your head. “Big Time” Emblematic of the yuppie culture of the ‘80's, this song satirizes the "bigger is better - greed is good” culture of the time. Stewart Copeland (of the Police) is on drums, while Tony Levin is fingering the bass and Jerry Marotta is playing the strings on the bass with drumsticks to give it the "slap bass" sound. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Danger Zone” - the theme from “Top Gun” by Kenny Loggins This tune was a hit from the mega-hit movie “Top Gun” featuring Tom Cruise. It’s actually a good soundtrack! STAFF PICKS: “I Wanna be a Cowboy” by Boys Don’t Cry Brian! Oh, Brian — I mean, Ted! Oh, Ted! Fighting off danger! This one hit deadpan comedy wonder could be heard in all the clubs in 1986. “All the Things She Said” by Simple Minds Rob shares the third single from Simple Minds’ seventh studio album, and it’s a great track. The B-side to the single is a live version of “Don't You Forget About Me,” their most famous song (but one that the lead singer hated). “Touch & Go” by Emerson, Lake, & Powell Wayne goes for ELP...but not Palmer in this case! Cozy Powell takes over percussion duties from Carl Palmer, who was unavailable to reform Emerson, Lake, & Palmer due to his work with the supergroup, Asia. The synthesizer melody is based on an English folk tune called “Lovely Joan.” “No One is to Blame” by Howard Jones Bruce closes out staff picks with this one. Jones originally put out this song on his “Dream Into Action” album. It became a hit after Phil Collins produced the re-recording, and added the drum work and backing vocals. This track appeared on Jones' third album entitled "One to One." LAUGH TRACK: “The Chicken Song” by Spitting Image This number one song in Britain was from a comedy TV show which used puppets designed to look like famous politicians and celebrities. This is where Genesis got their video for “Land of Confusion.” Check out the video.

The Breakfast Club was written, directed, and produced by John Hughes and starred Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy as the titular kids brought together by Saturday detention in fictional Shermer, Illinois. The film's spawned memes, quotable lines, and just last week became the subject of a retrospective look in a New Yorker essay by Molly Ringwald, entitled "What About 'The Breakfast Club'? Revisiting the movies of my youth in the age of #MeToo." The Breakfast Club's visuals are iconographic, with the film's poster being lifted by sources as varied as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 and Archie comics. However, what's endured most from the 1985 movie has been the soundtrack, and in particular, Simple Minds' Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit, "Don't You (Forget About Me)." The song -- written and composed by producer Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff -- would be Simple Minds' biggest hit, while also one of the few songs not written by the band's vocalist Jim Kerr or keyboardist Charlie Burchill. Forsey had several instrumentals featured on the soundtrack, along with songs by Wang Chung and '80s soundtrack staple E.G. Daily. It's an impressive array of '80s pop, but Simple Minds' song playing over the closing credits and and Judd Nelson's raised fist, will forever be linked with the film.

The 2012 hit film "Pitch Perfect," about dueling college a cappella groups is an "a-ca-terrible" combination of the movies "Dodgeball" and "Mean Girls," but instead of being funny, it is just a bunch of people lip-synching over-produced Auto-Tune vocals to songs we all rightly forgot about a while ago. This movie projectile vomits a slew of ignorant comments about rape victims, Asian-Americans, lesbians, Jews and deaf people. These are all played for laughs, but they forgot that laughs are usually the result of jokes, not just saying random inappropriate things. Anna Kendrick plays the literally too-cool-for-school Beca Mitchell, your typical angsty teen who loves to make mix tapes, and somehow believes this makes her a real musician. She dreams of moving to Los Angeles to work for a record label so she can then be a musician (which isn’t how that works), but has to first join an all-girls a cappella team for a year, or else her daddy won’t pay for her to move to LA. Skylar Astin (who looks exactly like Dane Cook) plays Jesse, Anna Kendrick’s love interest who sings for the girls’ rival a cappella group. He loves the movie "The Breakfast Club" and thinks Simple Mind's song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" is the best original score in film history, because he doesn’t know what constitutes a film score apparently. Rebel Wilson plays a girl who calls herself "Fat Amy" so "twiggy *******" won't call her that behind her back, because, ya know, body-shaming is wrong. She's a brash Australian who isn't funny at all. Oh, so is her character. Adam Devine plays Bumper Allen, the egotistical leader of the girls' rival a cappella group. He has a crush on "Fat Amy" and also enjoys throwing burritos. He ends up becoming a back-up singer for John Mayer, who needs one for some reason. Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins play the announcers for these boring a cappella events, unabashedly ripping off Fred Willard’s character in "Best in Show," but forgetting to be funny. Join us as we discuss DJs, how we would re-write this movie, and Osama bin Laden’s old a cappella days. Together, they pay ultimate homage in discussing:How to appreciate the full scope of emotion with the departure of a legendary player (3:30), understanding why the Blue Jays ruled out the return of a player that still has something left in the tank (10:01), how Bautista digested his team's desire to part company as expeditiously as possible (13:11), if there's something profoundly sad in how his career ended in Toronto (17:42), and how being rough around the edges and unorthodox as a player made a difference in his treatment by fans and front office alike (24:23).Tonight's episode was brought to you by: Cloudwifi (cloudwifi.ca). Here's more from amazon about Don't You Forget About Me:After earning rave reviews with her rock-and-roll memoir But Enough About Me, Jancee Dunn takes on fiction in this comically poignant debut, a perfect read for anyone who has ever looked back nostalgically and wondered what might have been. At thirty-eight, Lillian Curtis is content with her life. She enjoys her routine as a producer for a talk show in New York City starring showbiz veteran Vi (“short for vibrant”) Barbour, a spirited senior. Lillian’s relationship with her husband is pleasant if no longer exciting. Most nights she is more than happy to come home to her apartment and crawl into her pajamas. Then she’s hit with a piece of shocking news: Her husband wants a divorce. Blindsided, Lillian takes a leave of absence and moves back to her parents’ home in suburban New Jersey. Nestled in her childhood bedroom, where Duran Duran and Squeeze posters still cover the walls, she finds high school memories a healing salve to her troubles. She hurtles backward into her teen years, driving too fast, digging up mix tapes, and tentatively reconciling with Dawn, a childhood friend she once betrayed. Punctuating her stroll down memory lane is an invitation to the Bethel Memorial High School class of 1988 twenty-year reunion. It just might be Lillian’s chance to reconnect with her long-lost boyfriend, Christian Somers, who is expected to attend. Will it be just like heaven? Lillian discovers, as we all must, the pitfalls of glorifying the glory days, the mortification of failing as a thirtysomething adult, and the impossibility of fully recapturing the past. Don’t You Forget About Me is for anyone who looks back and wonders: What if?

"Screws fall out all the time. The world is an imperfect place" This week we join the brat pack in John Hughes' 1985 coming of age comedy drama The Breakfast Club. We discover that this movie is more than just daft haircuts and angry power chords as Paul, who loved The Breakfast Club as a teenager, finds watching it again all these years later a therapeutic experience and he finally accepts he WAS Brian.  Meanwhile, Rachael reveals she was a straight A student and Andy discusses his love/hate relationship with the movie. Later, Paul decides to dress up as Ally Sheedy, which worries a confused Andy who had a crush on the actress, and, as he unleashes his anger at the makeover of his beloved ("a lovely woman ruined"), Racheal takes a look at some other movie makeover scenes including Grease, She's All That, Pretty In Pink and Muriel's Wedding. Andy continues his hot & cold relationship with The Breakfast Club by discussinghis frustration at the ending, and looks at some other movies with disappointing denouements, including It's a Wonderful Life and the first two Superman movies.  And is that a chicken drumstick in Judd Nelson's hand at the end? We love a bit of movie trivia on Spoiler, and The Breakfast Club is a veritable trivia-fest, as we discover that Rick Moranis, John Cusack and Laura Dern were all in the frame for roles in the movie, that Simple Minds weren't the original choice to record "Don't You Forget About Me", and we even find out the make and model of Brian's pen. And we end this series with another of our fiercely fought music quizzes. This time, Andy tests Paul and Rachael's knowledge of 80s movie themes and raises the stakes with two specially made mix tapes as prizes: "The Best of the 80s" for the winner, and "The Worst of the 80s" for the loser, which they MUST promise to listen to in its entirety, despite it including "Daddy's Home" by Cliff Richard. This week's scale: The Breakfast Club or School of Rock
