Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, mainstream comedies were dominated by just one man: Judd Apatow. As a writer, director, and/or producer, Apatow was behind many of the biggest hits of the era, including classics such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Superbad, Bridesmaids, The Big Sick, and -- as we've previously discussed -- The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Now Kai Yaniz returns to discuss 2007's Knocked Up and its "sort-of sequel," 2012's This Is 40. Apatow wrote and directed both movies, which have a lot to say about parenthood, relationships, and how time affects them. We'll discuss whether these movies still hold up, weigh in on Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd's performances, and reveal our personal connection to them. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 60 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. visits the way-back machine to discuss two phenomena of his youth or, more specifically, the year 1987. As cult classic and perennial Halloween favorite The Monster Squad celebrates 30 years since its initial theatrical release, Disney XD launches its much-anticipated reboot of popular animated series DuckTales ("Woo-oo!"). It's as if 1987 is some kind of focal point, connecting the entertainment of the past to the present in some meaningful way. Or, at the very least, it's a good opportunity to create the most unlikely pairing ever to hit the Crooked Table Podcast. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 59 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. closes the book on the 2017 summer movie season with some arbitrary awards. The past few months have brought an interesting blend of franchise and original fare, with surprising standouts emerging on both sides. So, as The Dark Tower looms essentially as the last big tentpole of the season, let's review some of the films that had critics and audiences talking since May. With any luck, the rest of 2017 will offer just as much to break down and obsess over as the year to date. Considering that new films from Marvel, DC and Star Wars are among the most anticipated, it's looking likely that 2017 will keep up the momentum it has developed so far. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 58 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. finally catches up with the critically acclaimed new film from writer/director Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, James D'Arcy, Cillian Murphy, Harry Styles (yes, that Harry Styles) and Mark Rylance. With rich subject matter and his usual flair behind the camera, Nolan could be poised to add another classic to his already impressive resume following hits like Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Inception. But does Dunkirk live up to its pedigree or fail to deliver the experience longtime Nolan fans are expecting? In Episode 57 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. sifts through mountains of Judd Apatow-produced films to find the very best of the bunch in a new edition of Let's Talk About SIX. From The 40-Year-Old Virgin to Trainwreck, Apatow has directed some of the best comedies of the 2000s, but his producing credits reach even deeper than his directorial efforts. His latest, The Big Sick, is becoming one of the most talked-about films of the year, but does the Michael Showalter film, starring Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter and Ray Romano really live up to all the hype preceding its wide release? Let's take a closer look at this comedy/drama and break it down for ourselves   We're excited to hear your feedback as the show continues to evolve. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 56 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. and Freddy Yaniz catch up some popular recent releases, namely writer/director Edgar Wright's pseudo-action musical Baby Driver and Illumination Entertainment's latest Minion-fest Despicable Me 3. Then, it's on to the battle between humans and apes in the trilogy-capping War for the Planet of the Apes. Andy Serkis reprises his lead role as ape leader Caesar -- thanks to the miracle of motion-capture technology -- as the character faces a fearsome new adversary in The Colonel (Woody Harrelson). Of course, this marks the ninth entry in the long-running Planet of the Apes franchise, but director Matt Reeves' film truly marks a conclusion to the storyline that began in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes and continued in Reeves' own Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. But will this third installment in the rebooted series be its finest hour yet? War for the Planet of the Apes synopsis courtesy of 20th Century Fox: In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (Woody Harrelson).  After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind.  As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 55 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. welcomes Freddy Yaniz back to the show after a lengthy hiatus to talk (of course) the latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Listen in as they talk all things Spider-Man and celebrate the webslinger's full emergence as a central figure in the MCU with Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Jon Watts-directed film -- which sees Tom Holland return to the role of Peter Parker opposite Michael Keaton's The Vulture -- marks the sixth Spider-Man film in 15 years, but is it a return to form for the iconic hero after an extended period of subpar big-screen solo films? Spider-Man Homecoming synopsis courtesy of Sony Pictures: A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming.  Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 52 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. uncovers director Alex Kurtzman's new take on The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella. The film is, of course, intended to kick off Universal's monster-centric Dark Universe. We'll investigate whether The Mummy provides a solid foundation for what's to come as well as how it stacks up against the 1999 edition, which saw Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz bring the classic tale to the modern age. Also: Rob reviews A24's latest, director Trey Edward Shults' It Comes At Night starring Joel Edgerton, and discusses his thoughts on the latest news surrounding X-Men: Dark Phoenix. It's a jam-packed episode of the Crooked Table Podcast. So let's get to it before a certain Egyptian princess catches up with us. We're excited to hear your feedback as the show continues to evolve. As usual, the podcast does feature explicit language and, as such, is best considered NSFW. Synopsis for The Mummy, courtesy of Universal Pictures: Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy. Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television's Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV's American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), Marwan Kenzari (The Promise) and Oscar®winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator). The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on.  Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, and Sarah Bradshaw (Maleficent) produce alongside Kurtzman and Morgan. Yo ho, yo ho and all that... Film synopsis, courtesy of Disney: Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea—notably Jack. Jack's only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy.
