What if the teachings of Christ were at odds with the political movements some Christians support? In this thought-provoking episode of The Bad Roman Podcast, host Craig Harguess welcomes Stephen Sizer, a retired minister and expert on Christian Zionism, to explore this very question. Together, they unpack the complex history and theological misconceptions surrounding Christian Zionism, a movement that often uncritically backs policies in the Nation State of Israel. Key Topics: Defining Christian Zionism: Discover how this political movement, driven by Christians, predates Jewish Zionism and often contradicts Christ's teachings. Personal Journey: Reverend Sizer shares his transformation from a conservative evangelical to a critic of Christian Zionism, inspired by his deep dive into biblical history and geography. Biblical Interpretation: Challenge the common view of modern Israel as biblical Israel. Sizer argues that scripture defines Israel as a community of faith, not a nation-state. The Good Samaritan Parable: Gain a fresh perspective on this timeless story, emphasizing compassion for all, regardless of identity. Facing Criticism: Learn about the backlash Stephen has faced for his views and how it has only strengthened his resolve to challenge what he sees as the heresy of Christian Zionism. Notable Quotes: "Christian Zionism is a political form of what they see as love for Jewish people, philosemitism. But in reality, it's today a movement that uncritically endorses the worst excesses of the Israeli regime." - Stephen Sizer "The best defense is a good neighbor. But building walls and killing people in the surrounding nations is not the way to win friends. It's not the way to bring peace." - Stephen Sizer "The question is, are you going to stop or not? Not for one of ours or not even for one of theirs, but for a human being." - Stephen Sizer Join us for a compelling discussion that challenges conventional beliefs and encourages a more Christ-like approach to the Middle East and Israel's Occupation of Palestine. Many parents of neurodivergent kids end up homeschooling at some point or another, for a period of time — some by choice, some because the school environment stopped being the right fit for our kids. If homeschooling is something you've considered, have done, or are currently doing, you are going to love this episode. I'm joined by Maren Goerss and Angela Sizer, two former teachers turned homeschooling parents and advocates, the hosts of the Homeschool Unrefined podcast, and the authors of the new book Think Differently About Learning: A Homeschool Where Parents and Children Thrive. I loved this conversation where we explored homeschooling from many different angles, including considerations when homeschooling neurodivergent kids, the common barriers parents face, and why trusting the process and our children is crucial, yet challenging, in a homeschooling environment. We also talk about way viewing children as individuals worthy of respect and autonomy can revolutionize the learning experience, and how following our children's interests can lead to more meaningful and effective education. Angela Sizer earned her Master's in Teaching and taught in public schools for seven years. For a decade, she homeschooled her own children and loved watching them explore their passions and get excited about learning. These experiences strengthened Angela's commitment to respecting how children learn and highlighted the role neurodivergence and mental health play in the process. Maren Goerss has her Master's in Education and taught elementary school for eight years. As part of a neurodivergent family, Maren sees learning differences as superpowers and leans into their strengths. After being a homeschool parent for years, Maren has become an ADHD parent and life coach. Together, Angela and Maren created the podcast, Homeschool Unrefined, in 2016 to share their experience and knowledge as educators and homeschoolers while encouraging parents to notice how their children are always learning. Their podcast and book are a call to parents to reconsider their expectations of their children and themselves. They advocate for doing less, leaning into strengths, and enjoying the process.   Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Just as the US flag had many iterations before it, in 1960, finally became what we know today, the city flag of St. Louis went through several versions before it arrived, in 1964, at the current version. Just press play to hear the whole story. Click on search links to see if there are episodes with related content:  Andrew Wanko, Arts, Entertainment, and Culture, Politics and Government, Podcast Transcript: I'm Andrew Wanko, Public Historian of the Missouri Historical Society, and here's history on 88-one, KDHX. ——— If you've spent any time in St. Louis, you've surely spotted the red banner with a fleur-de-lis and river-like blue lines that announces the city to the world. But while you might presume St. Louis's flag has flown since the city's earliest days, it's actually a pretty recent addition to our civic symbols. Its barely older than the Gateway Arch, and wasn't the first flag the city had. ——— In 1915, a local civic group launched a contest to design a St. Louis flag, and south side artist Edward Krondl won over 80 other entrants. His design featured Art Hill's statue of St. Louis outlined in blue, with vivid orange and white stripes symbolizing prosperity, purity, and wealth. But when the St. Louis Board of Aldermen saw the color palette they grimaced, and in summer 1916 announced their own flag competition.  ———  The second winning city flag design again featured the statue of St. Louis, now over red white and blue stripes, with four stars symbolizing that St. Louis was the nation's 4th largest city in population. The 1916 city flag became St. Louis's first official one, but its weaknesses quickly showed. The design looked cluttered, the horseback figure of St. Louis was reduced to a blur when the flag was waving, and the stars became meaningless as St. Louis shifted in the population ranks.  ——— With St. Louis's bicentennial approaching in February 1964, Yale University heraldry expert Theodore Sizer came to the rescue. He presented the St. Louis city flag design that now stands beside civic landmarks, waves from front porches, and graces t-shirts and coffee mugs. Sizer's St. Louis flag embodies all five of the North American Vexillogical Association's “good flag design” principles – it's simple enough to draw from memory, has meaningful symbolism, uses limited colors, contains no lettering or seals, and doesn't copy from existing flags. ——— In 2004, the St. Louis flag was named among the top five U.S. city flags, and thousands of voters in a 2020 March Madness-style social media contest crowned St. Louis's flag the world's best.  ——— Here's history is a joint production of the Missouri Historical Society and KDHX. I'm Andrew Wanko and this is 88-one, KDHX, St. Louis. ———

Intimidate—Isolate—Incriminate: the strategy employed to shut down debate regarding what is happening within the state of Israel and the territories it controls. The Christian Zionist movement is guilty of substituting the state of Israel for Christ as the object of worship. Suicide in Doctors  - A deeply moving and powerful YODPod episode. That is all we can say. Dr Elizabeth Sizer tragically died by suicide in 2016. She was a loving cousin to Dr Dan Gearon, our YOD CEO & Founder - and devoted sister to Kate, our inspirational podcast guest. You Okay, Doc? was created in loving memory of Dr Liz Sizer.Heartbreakingly, it is reported that a doctor takes their own life every 3 weeks in the UK - and that was before the pandemic. Our charity exists to try to ensure no doctor ever needs to feel like that again. Kate speaks so powerfully in this episode about her sister's mental health, the impact she feels that being a doctor had on that and what more could have been done. Reasons such as an inability to speak out, all-encompassing burnout  & learning to keep your emotions inside as 'part of the job' until it's too late - are uncomfortably familiar to us all.Hosted by our brilliant Founding Ambassador Dr Katrina - who too speaks so honestly about her she overcame her own struggles - in a way that you can't help but be inspired to feel empowered to do the same. The power of community for doctors is spoken about often in this episode - endorsing Prof. Greenberg's statement that resilience is built between individuals not within. You Okay, Doc? is so proud of the community it's creating where every doctor can always feel safe, supported and valued. Amongst the words of intense pain in this episode there is also hope - & a belief that we all have the power to make a change and be there for each other. YODPod Psychotherapist, Chris Cherry, expertly draws insights and conclusions from this conversation that we hope will help all that listen help themselves and those around.Thank you to all that took part in this deeply powerful and moving conversation. This podcast is sponsored by #FirstRespondersFirst. We are privileged and proud to partner with them to support doctors' mental health across the globe. ....................................If you like what you hear, please do give us a rating to help us reach as many people as possible. It is worth noting that this is a conversational piece and the opinions and views are of those in this discussion in its own context at that time of the recording. You Okay, Doc? is a charity supporting the mental health and wellbeing of doctors.  Throughout our podcasts, we discuss issues affecting physical, emotional and mental wellbeing that at times some may find upsetting, if you find yourself affected by these please seek professional help.As a charity, we need your help to keep going and develop to support and raise awareness of mental health for Doctors.  Please check out our website https://youokaydoc.org.uk/ and our Instagram page to find out more and stay up to date with us.  If you would like, you can also text donate to support the You Okay, Doc? charity by texting.  To donate £3 text 'DOCTOR' to 70331,  or to donate £5 text 'DOCTOR' to 70970.  Thank you for listening and we look forward to creating more content.   See you on the next YOD pod.

Sometimes we can get so caught up in our identity as mothers that we forget that we are first children of our Heavenly Father. No matter their age, we carry the weight of our children's happiness, safety and success which can oftentimes lead us into a place of fear and ultimately, weariness. Join me as I speak with author, Shay Sizer Mason, as she shares the story of her own battle with fear, how she learned to release control and ultimately rediscover her identity in Christ. We will discuss the different ways we can respond to fear, how to find strength to persevere through the most difficult of situations and why it is important to find our identity in Christ alone plus Shay's new book release, Rest for the Weary: Finding Freedom from Fear in the Heart of the Father. Grab your copy of Shay's new book wherever books are sold or visit her website: shaysmason.com Connect with Shay on Facebook @shay.mason and Instagram @shaysmason Check out my latest FREE resource at somercolbert.com/resources and connect with me on Facebook in the Ahavah Community Group and on Instagram @somercolbert SHOW NOTES: When fear comes in and we don't trust God to take control and we try to control everything ourselves, it goes into a very ugly place. Fear is a silent struggle. Do not struggle alone anymore! We end up being more hurtful to our kids and not caring for them in the way that we really want to and not being the mom we really want to be because we are so overwhelmed with our fear. If I had known that there really was a place where I could rest, that my heart could find rest back when I was struggling with this I think I would have responded to a lot of things differently. And there is this sense of grief, like “Lord, if I'd only known” but He's so good and He redeems all of those things and He restores what's been lost. I loved my son so fiercely that I was too fierce God has our children in His hands and we are stewards but we're not the ultimate say so, you know, God still directs their paths We can't punish ourselves for not knowing what we didn't know but we still do God doesn't make mistakes when He gives us children - those children are meant for us despite our shortcomings, despite our failures, despite our mess ups. I took an unhealthy heart desire and I transferred that into my parenting and thought, now I have to be the best parent, and that is not a good way to parent. It didn't take me long until I hit that wall where I'm like, I don't know who I am, I don't know what I'm doing, I'm not worth anything to anyone. I really had an identity crisis. It's a good thing to get to an identity crisis because that's where the Lord can start to come in and speak into some of those lies. I knew in my head that He loved me, I knew a lot of scripture, I crammed a lot of scripture into my head and I was waiting for it to drop to my heart. What we all really need is to allow our Heavenly Father to come in and provide the things that we lack. The comfort, the nurture, the things that allow us to know that we're safe. To know that we're loved. That we are precious daughters of a Father who loves us more than anything. It's that heart understanding of the depth of that love that really brings the healing. Ask God: Lord, where does my heart need to be touched?
