Plans by World Energy GH2 to produce hydrogen in the Stephenville area are on hold. A statement from the company last week said, "The green ammonia market is not maturing at the rate expected." The company also says the market will dictate the timeline for its proposed project. That leaves the business community hoping that the company will continue with their plans for wind turbines, with other industries benefitting from the power. Debbie Brake-Patten is president of the Bay St. George Chamber of Commerce. She and Stephenville Mayor Tom Rose spoke with Radio-Canada's Patrick Butler.

A mismatch between suppliers and buyers is making it hard to grow the supply of low-carbon products like cement, steel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). If you want to produce a product like SAF, you want to find the cheapest place to do it — someplace where there's cheap, low-carbon hydrogen, for example. But the buyers who have the incentive and money to pay for those products might be halfway across the world. Or say you're a supplier of a low-carbon building material. Risk-averse contractors with tight margins may hesitate to pay a green premium — even if the final buyer of the building might be willing to pay extra to cut emissions. So how do you bridge the gap between the buyers and sellers of low-carbon products? In this episode, Shayle talks to Adam Klauber, vice president of sustainability and digital supply chain at World Energy, a low-carbon fuels company. They talk about book and claim, a system to separate the environmental attribute (avoided emissions) from the physical good (e.g. fuel). It's a system that developed in the power sector as renewable energy credits (RECs) and is now spreading to SAFs and other industries. Shayle and Adam cover topics like:  Book and claim versus other systems of tracking environmental attributes, such as mass-balance and physical chain-of-custody Lessons from the most mature book and claim systems, like RECs and SAF Key challenges like double counting the interoperability of digital registries and certification  Other industries where book and claim may develop like maritime, trucking, steel, cement, and chemicals Recommended resources Roundtable On Sustainable Biomaterials: RSB Book & Claim Manual World Economic Forum: The Clean Skies for Tomorrow Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificate (SAFc) Framework Sustainable Supply Chain Lab: Decarbonizing the Air Transportation Sector: New greenhousegas accounting and insetting guidelines for sustainable aviation fuel Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping: MaritimeBook & Claim RMI: Structuring Demand for Lower-Carbon Materials: An Initial Assessment of Book and Claim for the Steel and Concrete Sectors Catalyst: The complex path to market for low-carbon cement Catalyst is brought to you by EnergyHub. Despite frequent pronouncements that the world should stop using coal, it still consumes vast amounts of black rocks. According to the Energy Institute's Statistical Review of World Energy, coal's global primary energy consumption was about 15% above natural gas in 2022 and only 15% lower than crude oil.  Coal consumption has yet to decline. Instead, coal use has plateaued for the better part of the last decade.  Because of its carbon intensity and large consumption, Peter and Jackie describe coal as the “herd of elephants” in the room for meeting aggressive decarbonization and climate goals under the 2015 Paris Agreement. This week, our guest is Lara Dong, Senior Director, Global Coal Research, S&P Global Commodity Insights. Lara explains why coal demand has been resilient and what to expect in the future.  Here are some of the questions Peter and Jackie ask Lara: Is coal consumption expected to stay strong? Why is China still building new coal power plants?  How does this compare to clean electricity additions in China, including wind, solar, and hydro? Is there still ongoing new investment in coal mines to add supply?  Why was 2021 a pivotal year for Chinese energy policy?  How did the 2022 energy crisis impact China's and India's energy policy for coal? Do you think the IEA Net Zero scenario, which assumes a 90% drop in coal consumption by 2050, is likely?  If Canada were to increase its LNG exports to Asia, would this decrease coal consumption (and greenhouse gas emissions) in the region?

In the first half, numerologist Glynis McCants (ph. 877-686-2373) joined George to discuss the World Energy of the year 2024, an 8 year, as well as how world events are unfolding and why it's not too late to seize opportunities to create personal wealth or find love. McCants, an expert in how patterns of events unfold exactly according to the energy signature of specific numbers, explained the origins of the discipline she follows, noting that it originated with Pythagoras, is more than 2,500 years old, and is based on "the belief... that everything in this universe has vibration," and that through numerology you can understand those vibrations and how they interact with people and events. For instance, she said, in the case of love and relationships, numerology can help a person determine "who is compatible to you and who is a challenge."She also explained how energy can be changed with numerology by changing numbers. All numbers can be reduced to 1 through 9, and are determined by adding together each series of numbers until you get to the root number. So, for instance, 640 would be 6+4+0 which equals 10. Then 10 would be 1+0. The number 640, then, would be a "1" number. So, McCants explained, if you want to be left alone, having your address as a "1" number is fine. If you don't want to be alone, though, you can change it, she said. You can do that, she claimed, by adding a number to gain the vibration you are seeking, and then writing or inscribing that number somewhere out of sight inside your doorframe. According to McCants, this will change the energy of your home without having to change your physical address. Be careful what you change it to, though. The numbers expert said while a "5" house will always be interesting, there are dangers of addiction associated with that number, while a "6" home is good for family and stability. McCants also touched on the numbers associated with world leaders and politicians, including Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Robert Kennedy Jr., and Vladimir Putin, and what that predicted for them in the coming year before taking calls and giving readings based on the numbers associated with birthdates. For more, check out Glynis' online workshop on Saturday, April 6th on using affirmations and numerology for healing.-------------Journalist and researcher Alex Ansary has covered diverse subjects including the supernatural influence over human affairs, geopolitics, and World War 3, the Sun's effect on human consciousness, spiritual transformations, and other ideas regarding what we are really doing here on Earth. In the second half, he explained the impact of solar cycle 25 and how increased sunspots and geomagnetic storms correlate with more wars, conflicts, invasions, protests, and all-around civil unrest (view related material). Ansary began by noting how Galileo was one of the first to study solar cycles in the Western world but that the Chinese have been keeping records of sunspot counts for much longer. According to Ansary, the Russian researcher Alexander Chizhevsky used these records in the early 20th century to develop his theories of "heliobiology" or the study of the Sun's effect on biology, and was one of the first (at least in modern times), "to start looking at the Sun and the wars that were taking place when the Sun was active at that time." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

Reading an Environmental Impact Statement, or EIS, sounds simple enough. At heart, it's a document that explains what a proposed project might mean for the environment. Government often requires an EIS to be filed and reviewed before a project can go ahead. But in reality, the document can be long, complex, and full of technical language. A deadline is coming up for public comment on World Energy GH2's proposed wind project, but the company's EIS is thousands of pages long. People in St. George's and Corner Brook can get some advice on that at upcoming public presentations. Camille Ouellet-Dallaire is an assistant professor at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University.

Our guest on this week's episode is someone who over the past 25 years has played a pivotal role in the development and adoption of biofuels. He's a forward thinking leader who is committed to creating a better world. Joining Dan Ryan is President and CEO at World Energy, Gene Gebolys!Gene highlights the importance of achieving net zero, the value of being authentic, and the technology behind biofuels. Takeaways:  Hospitality is about welcoming others into your space and putting them at ease. In the context of sustainability, it is crucial to focus on decarbonizing sectors like aviation and help people travel with a lower carbon impact, aligning their actions with their values. Net zero is a critical concept in combating climate change, where the goal is to remove as much carbon as is emitted. Though offsets exist to absorb emitted carbon, their effectiveness and quality vary, calling for careful consideration in their implementation. Offsets have been widely abused, leading to a lack of confidence in them. However, the use of insets, which displace carbon emissions in the same sector, provides a high-quality alternative to offsets that can effectively reduce a sector's carbon footprint. Displacing fossil fuels with alternative energy sources may seem small in scale compared to the overall demand. However, it is crucial for leading brands to authentically uphold their net zero commitments and inspire other companies to join them. The importance of embracing innovation, energy efficiency, and sustainable living, lies in their ability to create a more thoughtful, connected, and sustainable future for all. To move forward, we must embrace a more community focused way of life. Approximately 9% of global carbon emissions are emitted during steel production. To address this, there is a growing need for increased efficiency and thoughtful design to reduce the creation and disposal of preventable waste. By using wind energy to break water into Oxygen and Hydrogen, wind energy can be stored in the form of “green hydrogen”. This allows for a renewable energy source like wind, to be bottled up and transported across the globe.  Quote of the Show:“If you're a corporate leader today, how can you be a corporate leader on everything but the biggest problem the species faces?” - Gene GebolysLinks: Twitter: https://twitter.com/GebolysGene  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/genegebolys/  Website: https://www.worldenergy.net/  Shout Outs: 05:47 - Google Flights: https://www.google.com/travel/flights 05:56 - United Airlines: https://www.united.com/en/us  06:31 - Hotel Marcel: https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/hvnsdup-hotel-marcel-new-haven/  11:53 - John Oliver's Carbon Offsets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p8zAbFKpW0  25:05 - Air Products: https://www.airproducts.com/  37:50 - The Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance: https://flysaba.org/  38:06 - Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/  38:07 - Deloitte: https://www2.deloitte.com/us/en.html  38:10 - Apple: https://www.apple.com/  38:15 - Bank of America: https://www.bankofamerica.com/  38:17 - JPMorgan Chase: https://www.jpmorganchase.com/  46:24 - Taniya Nayak 46:31 - Yellow Door Taqueria: https://www.yellowdoortaqueria.com/  Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

As 2023 nears, Nick goes back to 1984 for episode 84’s dedication—commemorating the seven-game NBA Finals series between the Boston Celtics and LA Lakers. The intense matchup marked the golden era of NBA basketball as the 1980s would feature classic rivalries, many of the sport’s greatest players, and iconic coaches. Nick crosses over from the hard court to America’s military, stressing the importance of focusing on the best military equipment, contractors, and systems. He calls out a new rule proposed by the Department of Defense and NASA that aims to require defense contractors to disclose their CO2 footprints, reduction plans, and their climate risks. Nick suggests our government is more concerned about our military’s carbon footprint than its efficacy, which is great for our enemies, as are all America’s climate policies. Such a strategy would’ve spelled loss for the Celtics and Lakers in 1984, and Nick fears it could spell loss for our military in an increasingly hostile world. Next up, Nick discusses BP considering ending the publication of its Statistical Review of World Energy. “Another symptom of how the energy space is being driven, more and more, by the mystic and not by the science,” says Nick. While some in the energy space yield to mysticism, CNX Resources is not. That’s why the company has recently launched its “Positive Energy Hub”—a new forum for energy related facts and resources. Nick proceeds to delve into CNX’s recently announced vision for the Appalachian region, aka “Appalachia First.” It’s a chaotic world when it comes to energy, but Appalachia should be ground zero for a better energy future. The CNX vision is a strategic roadmap, leveraging low-carbon-intensive natural gas to transform key sectors of America’s economy and workforce while also changing the world for the better. Why Appalachia? Nick says it all centers around location-location-location, including Appalachia’s workforce, existing infrastructure, and decades of energy supply. Nick concludes by looking at the motivators behind constructing the Appalachia First vision.
