In this Making Leaders podcast, we hear from Ed Spitler, Head of SATCOM at Artel and one of three inductees to the Space & Satellite Hall of Fame in 2024. For more than three decades, Ed Spitler has pursued a passionate commitment to support the American warfighter by supplying best-in-class satellite communications systems to power the success of the US Armed Forces. Upon completing his military service as a Cryptographic Telecommunications and Systems Specialist, Ed went to work for the US Department of Defense Contractor, rising from Senior Technical Engineer to Regional Program Manager, OPMAS-EUR, 5th Command, where he played a pivotal role in transitioning seven Defense Communications Sites (DCS) throughout Germany from analog to digital technology. In 2001, he joined Artel as Vice President of Managed Network Services, in which role he served as program director for more than eight critical DOD and Department of State programs and supported missions including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan. Leaving Artel in 2012, Ed went on to hold a series of leadership positions, including COO of Vizada, CEO of Astrium Services Government and President of Satcom Services Government Division at Airbus Defense and Space. By 2017, he was back at Artel as Head of Satcom, where he led the company into a multi-orbit future that delivered resilient GEO to LEO connectivity to the government. He led development and delivery of the SPACE FORCE Pathfinder 2 program, which embedded the Pathfinder 2 payload aboard Hispasat's Amazonas Nexus HTS. The goal was to provide dependable access to connectivity while saving money for Federal agencies compared with short-term satellite capacity leasing. The program produced savings of more than 60 percent over equivalent service.

Britton danced for Cincinnati Ballet and Les Ballets Trockadero before a back injury ended his performance career. His love for travel plus a little bit of relevant experience from high school led him to a sales position with Club Mediterranean. His aptitude as a leader in corporate settings quickly emerged - he became the top salesperson within 6 months! An ambitious restlessness then propelled him into systems and support roles, which took him laterally to more Fortune 500 corporations and upward into project management. In his current position at ADM, Britton is poised to make even more leaps up the management ladder leading multiple IT teams using Scrum methodology. He stays connected to dance in Cincinnati as a DANCEFIX instructor performing in drag as Brock Leah Spears (@Brockleahspears on Instagram). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/count9/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/count9/support

No Ounce Wasted  How do we keep innovating and diversifying as a small business? How do we bring staff along and build them up? How do we keep growing as a one-location shop? McCann's Local Meats continually finds new ways to connect with their community and keep their business authentic and successful. Even during Covid-19, they have developed a new meat vending machine (we have been dreaming of this for years). Kevin McCann began cutting at the Culinary Institute of America. "My first day of class with Tom Schneller I was hooked." He then worked for the The Hudson Valley Sausage company doing hog roasts, several hundred pounds of sausage each week, and deer processing during the season. After graduation he was hired as a Teaching Assistant Back in the Meat Room. As a production manager at DeBragga and Spitler, he learned the art of dry aging and understanding the wholesale side of butchery. After cooking for a few years, he got the opportunity to apprentice at Fleisher's. He found a co-op of farmers in Madison County, NY that were in the process of opening a butcher shop, but didn't have a butcher. Kevin created their entire fresh meat, deli, sausage, and further utilization programs, and they continue to grow and thrive to this day. Kevin and his wife Yeonmo opened McCann's Local Meats in Rochester, NY in 2015. They source our animals from within 60 miles of the shop. McCann's is also a restaurant and have a robust soup and sandwich menu, various prepared foods sold by the pound, and offer the option to choose anything from the fresh case to be cooked on site. kevin@mccannslocalmeats.com http://www.facebook.com/mccannmeat/ http://mccannslocalmeats.com ~ More About No Ounce Wasted ~  Profit margin perils, mental health crises, employee challenges. Being a butcher is so much more than cutting meat. No Ounce Wasted is a safe space for butchers to share their successes and woes, so that we can all learn and grow together. Meat it's whats for dinner! Kevin McCann has a deep infatuation with meat fabrication that started at the Culinary Institute of America. His first day of class with Tom Schneller got him hooked. After various jobs, including a time with DeBragga and Spitler where he learned what the best restaurants in NYC were ordering for their menus, his career got fully in motion during his apprenticeship at Fleisher's. Having a background in cooking and cutting really allowed Kevin the opportunity to appreciate the bigger picture while training. There was literally as much meat as he could possibly cut, and he was already formulating utilization ideas to complement the vast array of cuts they taught him to isolate. And by pure dumb luck, Kevin found a co-op of farmers in Madison County, NY that were in the process of opening a butcher shop but didn't have a butcher. He created their entire fresh meat, deli, sausage, and further utilization programs, and they continue to grow and thrive to this day. With that experience now in his belt, and with the confidence of seeing it work in a small city, Kevin and his wife Yeonmo opened McCann's Local Meats in Rochester, NY in 2015. They source their animals from within 60 miles of their shop where it's all grown hormone, preemptive antibiotic, and steroid free - 100% grass fed beef, pastured pork and poultry. McCann's also acts as a restaurant and they have a robust soup and sandwich menu, various prepared foods sold by the pound, and offer the option to choose anything from the fresh case to be cooked on site. The power of self-love and self-forgiveness on Kevin's journey He's also a member of the U.S. team for the 2020 World Butchers' Challenge taking place in Sacramento, CA! In this conversation, Kevin discusses his radical health transformation, how he overcame the addiction-filled lifestyle of the restaurant industry, and how he balances a terrific family with a terrific career running his own butcher shop. **Highlights of our conversation:**- 1:30 - Why is there a butcher on the show?- 2:47 - Why sourcing meat matters- 4:10 - Competing in the World Butchers' Challenge- 5:44 - What Kevin brings to the butcher business that very few do- 7:36 - Next level dishes at Kevin's restaurant- 10:42 - The differences within bone broth and its benefits- 15:55 - Kevin's major health and fitness transformation- 20:26 - Living a pain-free existence- 24:24 - Overcoming the culture and addictions associated with the restaurant industry- 34:45 - The beauty of getting sober- 36:45 - The power of self-love and self-forgiveness on Kevin's journey- 39:10 - What does it mean to be beautifully broken?- 39:38 - Advice for those looking to get off drugs and alcohol as a venting mechanism- 41:34 - Advice for aspiring restaurateurs **Connect with Kevin:** - Visit his website - http://www.mccannslocalmeats.com/- Follow on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mccannslocalmeats/- Connect on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mccannmeat/- Learn more about the World Butchers' Challenge - https://www.worldbutcherschallenge.com/ **Connect with me:** - Check out my website - https://freddiesetgo.com/- Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/freddiesetgo/- Read my Favs - https://freddiesetgo.com/freddies-favorites/- Sing For Your Seniors - https://http://singforyourseniors.org- Amp Coil - https://www.ampcoil.com **About me:** I'm Freddie Kimmel, a Functional Health Coach, Reiki Healer, Certified Personal Trainer, Gut Health Specialist, and proud cancer survivor.
